Automatic Realtime Control
WELCOME TO LINEAR ACOUSTIC ARC!
Congratulations on your purchase of ARC, the Automatic Realtime Control for television broadcast
loudness control. We know that you’re anxious to get started, so this quick start guide (QSG) will take you
from ‘out of the box’ to ‘up and running’ as quickly as possible, taking you through the steps to prepare
the ARC to process audio using an HD/SD-SDI (up to 3G) source.
REAR CONNECTORS
Plug each of the ARC’s two power supplies into two different AC power circuits.
Plug an Ethernet cable from your network into the Control Ethernet port on the back of ARC.
Connect your SDI source to the ARC SDI input on the rear panel, and the ARC SDI Output to your desired
destination.
See Figure 1.

NETWORK SETUP
CONFIGURING NETWORK CONTROL
When the unit is ready the ARC display will light up as shown in Figure 2 below.

To the right of the display there are 4 navigation buttons and an OK button.
Press the right button until the IP Configuration (Control) edit screen is visible as shown in Figure 3, below.

1. Press the OK button to highlight the Edit selection.
2. Press OK again to highlight “use DHCP”
3. Press the Right button to highlight Yes
4. Use the Down button to change the selection to No
5. Press the Left button and the Static IP settings will light up
a. Press Down to go to Address:
b. Press Right to move to the first digit in the IP address
c. Use the Up/Down buttons to change the selection
d. Press Right or Left to select another digit to edit.
e. When finished editing the address field, press Right or Left to return to Address
f. Press Down to navigate to the Netmask and Gateway fields
6. Repeat the above steps to edit the Netmask and Gateway
a. The gateway may be set to 000.000.000.000 if no gateway is required
7. After the Gateway is set press Left to highlight gateway and Down to highlight Update
8. Press OK when Update is highlighted to save the new IP information

CONNECTING TO ARC USING A BROWSER
The user interface to the ARC uses an HTML 5 web browser on any platform. Firefox and Chrome are both
recommended. Using any PC on the same network and subnet as ARC, enter the ARC IP address. For this
example, enter 192.168.1.5. as shown below. Enter the default password “1234” and Log In. See Figure 4.

Once logged in, select System. Enter a Unit Name and Location for this individual ARC. See Figure 5.

CONFIGURING I/O
Select I/O, then select Reference Clock and select SDI. The Reference Clock indicator will show SDI as the
primary source, and a green light ARC is locked to the SDI clock. A secondary sync source can be selected
if desired. The internal clock is selected in the example. See Figure 6.

Next select the Processor Inputs in the Program 1 and Program 2 drop downs. Any of the 8 SDI pairs may
be selected. The dropdown selections also include 8 x AES67 input pairs or the AES-3 input from the rear
panel. Here we will select SDI In 1/2 and SDI In 3/4 as the Program 1 and 2 input sources.

Select SDI and then under SDI Out-Routing, use the dropdown menu to select where the processed
Program 1 and Program 2 will be embedded in the outgoing SDI stream. See Figure 7.

The SDI Output dropdown is shown in Figure 8. The output embedding router allows you to select the 2 x
processed outputs as well as any of the SDI input pairs, the AES-3 input or any of 8 x AES67 pairs to be
embedded. This provides the ability to shuffle SDI audio pairs as well as embed other audio sources into
the SDI output.

The latency of processed audio through the ARC is 30.7 ms. Selecting Delays under I/O allows you to set
the delay of the video and passthrough audio sources equal to the audio latency.

SELECTING A LOUDNESS CONTROL PRESET
Select Program 1. If there is an SDI program source you will see both input and output meters working.
Under APTO Loudness Control select Load and Factory Profiles. There are profiles (presets) for several
national loudness standards and several general programming types as well.

The factory preset “EBU R128 Adaptive” is selected in Figure 10. This is an excellent starting point for
broadcasters that want compliance with EBU R128 loudness recommendations.
Please note that the name of Program 1 can be customized at the top of the page to reflect a channel
name, call letters, or any other “friendly” name that makes it easier for users to recognize it.
CONCLUSION
The steps presented have taken ARC from the carton to an EBU R128-compliant loudness controller for
two embedded SDI stereo programs. Though we have used SDI in this example, setup for AES-3 or AES67
I/O is similar. This completes this Quick Start Guide.
