GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheDeepSearchVIIisaTransmitterreceiver(TR)MetalDetector,operatingintheverylowfrequency(VLF)portionofthe
RFspectrum.Thedetectorutilizesthenaturalphenomenaofthephasedelayofalltargetstoprovidemineralfreeorground
compensatedresponseinthenormalmodeofoperation,ortoprovidediscriminatecapabilityinthediscriminatemode.
ThedesignoftheDeepSearchVIIwasimplementednotonlytoprovideexcellentsensitivity,buttoprovideaunitwhichis
easytouseforboththebeginnerandtheexperttreasurehunter.
Aswithanydetector,thefamiliarityoftheuserwiththeinstrumentwillhaveagreatdealtodowithhowsuccessfulthe
treasurehunteris.Werecommendthatyoureadandunderstandthismanualfullybeforeattemptingtousetheinstrumentin
thefield.
Besuretofilloutandmailyourwarrantyregistrationcardtovalidateyourwarranty.
ASSEMBLY
AssemblyoftheDeepSearchVIIisverysimple,andrequiresnospecialtools.Theonlyassemblyrequiredistomount
thesearchcoiltotheendofthelowerstemandinstallthelowerstemandlocknutassemblytotheupperstem.
1. Insertthepoletipbetweenthemountingearsofthesearchcoil,afterremovingthescrewandthumbnut.Alignthe
holesinthepoletipandthoseinthemountingears.
2. Insertthecoilmountingscrewthroughthecoilandpoletip.Besuretheinternaltoothlockwasherisonthescrew
headside.Thescrewheadshouldbeonthesideofthesearchcoilwherethecablecomesout.
3. Installthethumbnutonthescrewandtightenbyhand.
4. Theknurledlocknutisinstalledontheupperstemtoprotectthethreadsduringhandlingandshipment.Removethe
locknutandslideitontothelowerstemasshown.Besurethelockringisinsidethelocknutorbehindit,sothatitwill
bepushedintothelocknutwhenthelocknutisreinstalledonthethreads.
5. Insertthelowerstemintotheupperstem,pushthelocknutuptoengagethethreads,andtightenitfingertight.
6. Windthesearchcoilcablearoundthepole,andinstallthesearchcoilconnectorintotheconnectoronthefrontofthe
chassis.Tightentheconnectorfingertight.
ADJUSTMENT
Thesearchcoilangleandstemlengthshouldbeadjustedsothattheunitisnotuncomfortableortiringafterlongperiods
ofuse.Thestemlengthisadjustedbylooseningtheknurledlocknutandextendingorcollapsingthestemlengthuntiltheunit
canbeheldaboutaninchoffthegroundwhilestandingerect.Adjusttheangleofthesearchcoil,sothatthecoilisparallelto
theground.Tightenthesearchcoilthumbnutandstemlocknutbyhandtomaintainthissetting.
CONTROLS
ThefunctionofthefrontpanelcontrolsoftheDeepSearchVIIareasfollows,beginninginthelowerlefthandcorner,and
proceedinginaclockwisedirection.
1. ModeSwitch.Thisswitchisathreepositiontoggleswitchwhichselectsthebasicdetectoroperationmode.

A. BatteryTest. Thispositionisusedtochecktheconditionofthebatteries.Thebatterytestshouldbeperformedafterthedetectorhasbeenonforabout10minutes,andwitha
moderatetoheavyamountofsound.Ameterreadingof.6oraboveindicatesthebatterystrengthisadequateforproperoperation.Ifthemeterreadingisbelow.6,replacethebatteries.
B. AutoTune. Inthisposition,thedetectorwillhaveaveryslightamountofautomatictuning.Theautotuneisdesignedtohelpcompensateforslowlychangingambientconditionssuch
aschangesintheheightofthegrass,ortemperaturechanges.itisnotfastenoughtocauseanyproblemsduetoovershootfalsingontrashitems,andisrecommendedforalmostall
uses.
C. NormalTune. Inthisposition,theslowautotuneisdisconnected,sotheunitwillnottendtocorrectforchangingambientconditions.
2. DiscLevel.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetector'sresponsetounwantedmetallictrashwhenusedintheDiscriminatemode.Atthe
lowestsetting,"0",thedetectorwilleliminatemostironobjects,butwillstillrespondinapositivemannertolightfoil,bottlecaps,pulltabs
andothermostothermetallicitems.Astheknobsettingisincreased,responsetomoreofthesemetallictrashitemsisreversed,sothatthese
objectsgiveanegativeor"nulling"response.
3. Tuning.Thiscontrolisusedtotunethedetectortoitsmostsensitivesetting,regardlessofwhichmodeisused.Sincethetargetresponse
ofaTRdetectorisanincreaseinsoundlevel,theidealsettingformaximumdepthissothatthedetectorisjustbeginningtomakesound.
This"threshold"settingshouldbemaintainedatalltimes,asoperatingthedetectorcompletelysilentmeansadeeptargetmayhave
insufficientresponsetodrivethedetectoroutofthequietregionandinto"threshold".
4. Sensitivity.Thiscontroladjuststhedetector'ssensitivitytogroundeffectsduetomineralization,aswellasitssensitivitytometallic
targets.Inthenormalmodeofoperation,thedetectorwillignoreeffectsofmineralizationifitisproperlyadjusted,sothedetectorcanbe
operatedinmaximumsensitivityinalmostanygroundinthemode.Inthediscriminatemode,thegroundeffectsarenotignored,sothe
detectormayperformbetterinheavilymineralizedgroundatreducedsensitivity.
5. GroundAdjust.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetectorsothatitdoesnotrespondtothemineralizationintheground,whenusedin
normalmode.
6. ON/OFFVolume.Thiscontroladjuststheamplitudeoftheaudiosignal,aswellascontrollingthepowertotheunit.Whenusingthe
internalspeaker,thevolumecontrolshouldbeatitsmaximumclockwisesettingformaximumdepth.Whenusingheadphones,theinternal
speakerisdisconnected,andthevolumecontrolshouldbesetformaximumcomfortablevolume.
7. ModeControl/TuningSwitch.Thistoggleswitchislocatedintheendofthehandlewhereitmaybeoperatedwiththethumbandfirst
fingerofthehandholdingthedetector.Whentheswitchispusheddown,thedetectorwillselecttheDiscriminateModeofoperationand
tuneitself.Whentheswitchispulledup,thedetectorwillselecttheNormalmodeofoperation,andtuneitself.Therearearrowssilk
screenedonthefrontpaneltohelpremindyouwhichwaytopushtheswitch.ThearrowpointingdownnexttotheDiscLevelcontrol,means
thatDiscriminatemodeisselectedwhentheswitchispusheddown.ThearrowpointingupnexttotheGroundAdjustcontrolmeansthatthe
Normalmodeisselectedwhentheswitchispulledup.
TUNING
A. NormalModeTuning.
1. TurnON/OFFVolumecontrolfullyclockwise.
2. TurntheGroundAdjustcontroltoabout6.Setthesensitivitycontroltomid range(pointerstraightup).
3. HoldtheModeControl/TuningSwitchup.
4. TurnTuningcontrolasrequiredtogetamoderateaudiosoundandameterreadingofabout.4.
5. Holdthecoilabout2feetabovetheground,andreleasetheModeControl/TuningSwitch.
6. Lowerthesearchcoiltowithinaninchoftheground,andobservemeterreadingchangeandaudiochangeasthecoilislowered.
7. Ifthemeterreadingandthesoundincrease,turntheGroundAdjustcontroldownslightly(counterclockwise).Ifthemeterreadingandthesounddecrease,turntheGroundAdjust
controlupslightly(clockwise).
8. Raisethecoilbacktoabouttwofeetabovetheground,andmomentarilypulltheModeControl/TuningSwitchuptore establishthetuningthreshold.
9. Repeatsteps6,7,&8asrequired,untilthereisalmostnochangeinthemeterreadingandthesoundasthecoilisloweredtotheground.NOTE: Thegroundmustbefreeofall
metallicitemswherethecoilislowered.IftheGroundAdjustcontrolisturnedcompletelycounterclockwiseandthedetectorstillgiveanincreaseasthecoilislowered,atargetisunder
thecoil.Movetoanotherspotandrepeatthetuningprocedure.
10. PulltheModeControl/TuningSwitchup,andturntheTuningcontroldowntogetjustafaintaudiobuzz.
ThedetectorisnowreadytouseintheNormalmodeofoperation.OncethedetectorisGroundCompensated,rememberthenumbersettingontheGroundadjustcontrol,anduseitasa
startingpointnexttime.
B. DiscriminateTuning.
1. TurntheOn/OffVolumecontrolfullyclockwise.SettheSensitivitycontroltomid range(pointerstraightup).SettheDiscLevelcontrolto3.
2. HoldtheModeControl/TuningSwitchdownandadjusttheTuningcontroltogetaslightaudiosoundfromthespeakerorheadset.
3. Holdthesearchcoilabout1to2inchesabovetheground.MomentarilydepresstheTuningpushbuttonswitchtoestablishthetuningthreshold.
4. Raiseandlowerthesearchcoilslightly,andnotethetuningchanges.Ifaslightupwardmovementcausesafullscalemeterdeflectionandmaximumaudio,thegroundisheavily
mineralized,andmayrequirealowersensitivitysetting.Ifthedetectorcantolerateanupwardmovementofseveralinchesbeforepeggingthemeterandaudio,thegroundislightly
mineralizedandtheSensitivityknobcanprobablybeadjustedhigher.
5. AdjusttheSensitivitycontroltothehighestsettingthatwillallowyoutosweepthedetectorfromsidetosideandstillmaintainthethreshold.Attemptingtooperatethedetectorin
DiscriminateModeatmaximumsensitivityinheavilymineralizedgroundwillalmostalwaysresultinalossofperformance.
FIELDUSE
Thedetectorshouldbeheldinapositionthatiscomfortableforyou.Swingthedetectorfromsidetosideinaboutathreefootarc.TheDeep
SearchVIIdoesnotneedtobehurried,sogoatapacethatdoesn'twearyouout.
SincethecombinedModeControl/TuningSwitchallowsthedetectortobeoperatedwithjustonehand,itisveryeasytosearchinNormal
Modeuntilatargetisfound,thenswitchtoDiscriminatetocheckwhetheritisagoodtargetorjunk.
Keepthedetectortunedsothatitisjustbeginningtobuzz.InNormalModethedetectorignorestheground,ifproperlyadjusted,sothisis
easytodo.InDiscriminate,thegroundwillaffectthedetector,soyoushouldsweepthedetectorataconstantheightabovetheground(about1
inch).Irregularitiesintheground,aswellasinyoursweepheightwillcausevariationsinthetuning.Thesechangeswillusuallybemuchslower
thantheabruptsignalcausedbythecoilpassingoveragoodtarget.Alittlepracticewithacoinburiedabout1inchwillenableyoutopickout
thetargetsoundreadily,ascomparedtothebackgroundvariations.TurningtheSensitivitydownwillmakeiteasiertomaintainthreshold.Always
operateinDiscriminatewiththeSensitivitycontrolsetonlyashighaswillallowyoutooperateintheunitatthreshold.
Inareaswithwellkeptlawns,theeasiestwaytomaintainaconstantsearchcoilheightistoallowthecoiltorestonthegrassasyousweep
fromsidetoside.Inroughandrockyareasitisbestnotto“scrub” thecoilontheground,astherockswillactlikeabrasives,andwearawaythecoil
bottom.
Topinpointorlocateatargetwhichdoesn'tpegthemeterandaudio,simplymovethecoilaroundtofindthepointwheretheloudestaudio
andhighestmeterreadingisgiven.Thetargetwillberightbelowthecenterofthecoil.Ifthetargetresponseissostrongitpegsthemeterand
audio,simplypushthetuningbuttonmomentarilyoverthestrongestsignal.Thiswilltuneoutmostoftheresponsetothetargetandthedetector
willgototallyquietifitismovedawayfromthetarget.Itmaybenecessarytoretuneacoupleoftimestoalmosttotallytuneoutthetarget,but
youwilleventuallyarriveatatuninglevelthatwillnotsaturateorpegthemeterandaudiowhenyouaredirectlyoverthetarget.
IntheDiscriminateMode,thetuningwillhavetoberesetanytimethattheDiscLevelischanged.Thismerelyrequiresthatyoumomentarily
depressthepushbuttontuningswitch.Bybeingfamiliarwithyourdetectorandwheretypicaljunkitemsarerejectedcansaveyoumuchneedless
digging.
Onethingtoremember,though,isthatinDiscriminateMode,itisbestnottouseanyhigherDiscriminateLevelsettingthannecessary.
NickelsandmostsmallringsarerejectedwhentheDISCLEVELissettorejectpulltabsonallTRDiscriminators.Ifyoudon'tdiganyjunkatall,
youaresurelypassingupalotofothergoodfindstoo.SettheDISCLEVELonlyhighenoughtosuittheconditionswhereyouaresearching.
Atlowersettingsofsensitivity,thedetectorcanusuallybeswitchedfromNormalModetoDiscriminateModeorviceversawithoutaffecting
thetuning.AtmaximumsensitivitysomesmalleffectmaybeencounteredwhenswitchingfromNormaltoDiscriminate,soifthethresholdsound
doesgoawayorgetstooloudwhenswitchingModes,simplydepresstheTuningButtonmomentarily.
Forrelichuntingorforcoinshootinginareasthatarefreeoftrash,theNormalModeofoperationwillnormallygivebestresults,sincethe
detectoriseasytousewithmaximumsensitivity.ItmaybedesirabletooperatewithreducedsensitivityintheNormalModeattimes,however.For
example,topreventhavingtodiglarge,deepholesinawellkeptparklawn.
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
TheDeepSearchVIIisequippedwithaninternalbatterycheckcircuitsoyoucanalwaysknowyou'regettingtopperformancefromyour
detector.Thebatteriesshouldbetestedafterthedetectorhasbeenoperatedforabouttenminutes,andwhilethedetectorismakingaloudnoise,
sothebatteriesareproperlyloaded.Toforcetheaudioon,simplyholdthesearchcoilnearalargemetalobjectwhilecheckingthebatteries,or
depressthetuningbuttonandturntheTuningcontrolfullyclockwise.
Ifthemeterreadslessthan.6,thebatteriesshouldbereplacedtoensurebestperformance.
Tochangethebatteries,depressthechromebuttonsoneachsideofthedetector,andslidethebatterycoveroffthebackofthechassis.The
batteriesarecontainedinaplasticholderjustbehindthecover.
Removethebatterypackfromthedetector,andthenremovethebatteriesfromthepack.Replacethenewpenlightbatteriesintothepack,
observingthepolarityindicatorsthatareembossedineachbatterycompartmentofthebatterypack.
Replacethepackintotheholder,andreplacethebatterycoverbydepressingthechromebuttonsasthecoverisslidbackintothechassis.
GENERALCAREANDUSE
Ifthedetectoristobestoredforalongperiodoftime,itisbesttoremovethebatterypackfromthedetector.Thiswillpreventinternal
damagetothedetectorifthebatteriesshouldleak.
Thesearchcoiliswaterproofandmaybesubmergedineitherfreshorsaltwater.Cautionshouldbeexercisedtopreventwaterfromentering
thechassis,whereitcoulddamagetheelectroniccircuitry,orfromenteringtheupperstem,whereitcoulddamagethepushbuttonorleakinto
thechassis.Afterthecoilisusedinsaltwater,thecoilandlowerstemassemblyshouldberinsedwellwithfreshwatertopreventcorrosionofthe
metalparts.
Thereareseveralgoodbookstohelpthebeginnerlearnhowtousethedetector,wheretosearchandhowtorecoveratargetwithout
damagingtheenvironment.Agoodcoinshootercanrecoveralotoffindsandleavethearealookingasthoughhehadneverbeenthere.Above
all,alwaysfillyourholeswhenyouhaverecoveredthetarget.
TESOROMetalDetectorsaresoldthroughindependentdealers,whoarealmostalwaystreasurehuntersthemselves.Theycanprovideyou
withyoumuchneededinformationabouthowtouseyourdetector,howtoprobe,pluganddiginyourlocale,andanswermostofyourquestions
abouttreasurehuntingingeneral.
Theuseofearphoneswillbenefityouintwoways.Mostearphoneswillveryeffectivelyblockoutmostoftheambientnoise,suchastraffic
noiseandwindnoise,whichwillenableyoutobetterhearthefaintersignalscausedbythedeepertargets.Obviously,theolder,morevaluable
coinswillprobablybedeeperthantheoneswhichwerelostlastweek,soyoushouldtakeadvantageofanythingthatwillhelpyouheartheweaker
signals.Secondly,usingearphoneswillgreatlyextendthebatterylife,sinceittakesmuchlesspowertooperatethem.TheDeepSearchVIIisnot
equippedwithavolumecontrol,butdoeshavealimitingcircuitintheearphonejack.Iflessvolumeisdesiredwithearphones,youmaywantto
useearphoneswithabuiltinvolumecontrol.Anygood8or16ohmsetwith1/4inchstereojackwilldo.
The7"coplanarsearchcoilfurnishedwiththeDeepSearchVIIisoptimizedforcoinshootinginareaswithamoderatetohighamountof
trash.Inareaswithrelativelylittletrashmetallicitemsthe81/2"WideScancoilwillprovidegooddepthoncoins,andofcourseitshouldbeused
forrelichunting,asitwillgivebetterdepthforlargerobjects.
