GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheToltec100isahighperformanceVLF/TRdiscriminatorwhichfeaturesaTargetIdentifiercircuitwhichfeaturesa
TargetIdentifiercircuitwhichreadsthephaseangleofthetargetanddisplaystheprobableTargetIdentityonthefront
mountedmeter.TheToltecalsofeaturesameterreadingofCoinDepthwhenintheAllMetalmodeofoperation.
TheToltec100hastwobasicsearchmodes.1)NormalDiscriminatemode,and2)NotchDiscriminateModeand3)All
Metalmode.BoththeDiscriminatemodeisbasedonultraslowmotion,andrequiresthatjustaveryslightmotionbepresent
tooperateproperly.TheNormalDiscriminatemodeistobeusedwherepulltabsrenottooprevalent,andtheNotch
Discriminatemodeisintendedtobeusedtoeliminatethedetector'sresponsetounwantedpulltabswhenusedinareas
wheretherearenumerouspulltabs.
TheAllMetalmodeisnotmotionbased,andfurtherhasaswitchwhichcanprovideforautotuningofthismodefor
nuggethuntingorsimilaruses.A10turnGroundAdjustcontrolisusedtoprovideaccuratesetting.
AseparateoptionalBodyMountingkitisavailableforrapidlyconvertingthedetectortothebodymountconfiguration.The
detectorisfurnishedwithan81/2"concentricsearchcoil,butanyoftheTesorosearchcoilswilloperateproperly,exceptthat
thecoindepthreadingmaybeinerrorifusedwithothercoils.
Aswithanymetaldetector,thefamiliarityoftheusewiththeinstrumentwillhaveagreatdealtodowithhowsuccessful
theoperatoris.Werecommendthatyoureadandunderstandthismanualfully,andfamiliarizeyourselfwiththeinstrumentby
testingit,outdoorsovervarioustypesoftargetsbeforeattemptingtouseitinthefield.

ASSEMBLY
AssemblyoftheToltec100isverysimple,andrequiresnospecialtools.Theonlyassemblyrequiredistomountthe
searchcoiltotheendofthelowerstem,andinstallthelowerstemassemblytotheupperstem.
INSTALLINGSEARCHCOILANDLOWERSTEM
1. Depressthetwobuttonsontheupperendofthelowerstem,andslideitintotheupperstem.Pushthelowerstem
upsothatthebuttonsclickintothethirdsetofholesfromtheendoftheupperstem.Adjustforedesiredheightfollowing
assembly.
2. Insertthepoletipandwashersbetweenthemountingearsofthesearchcoil,afterremovingthescrewandthumb
nut.Aligntheholesinthepoletipwiththoseinthesearchcoilmountingears.
3. Adjustthecoilmountingscrewthroughthecoilandpoletip.Besuretheinternaltoothlockwasherisonthescrew
headside.Thescrewheadshouldbeonthesideofthesearchcoilwherethecablecomesout.
4. Installthethumbnutonthescrewandtightenbyhand.
5. Windthesearchcoilcablesnugglyaroundthepole.Installtheconnectorintheconnectormountedonthecontrol
housing,andtightenbyhand.
NOTEthatthesearchcoilcableshouldnotbeallowedtofloplooselyabovethesearchcoil,sincethewiresin
thecablearemetal,andmaycasefalsesignals.
ADJUSTMENT
Thesearchcoilangleandstemlengthshouldbeadjustedsothattheunitdoesnotbecomeuncomfortableortiringtohold
afterlongperiodsofuse.Thedetectorshouldrestinyourhandwitharmrelaxedallowingittoswingbackandforthwithout
havingtoliftwiththeelboworshoulder,whilekeepingthesearchcoilascloseaspossibletothegroundwithouttouching.The
stemlengthisadjustedbydepressingthespringbuttonsandextendingorshorteningthelowerstem,tilltheyclickintothe
holesthatgiveyouthemostcomfortablesetting.Thesearchcoilshouldbeaboutoneinchabovethegroundwhilestanding
erect.Adjusttheangleofthesearchcoil,sothatthecoilisparalleltotheground.Tightenthesearchcoilthumbnutbyhandso
thatthecoilwillmaintainthissetting.
Thearmrestontherearofthehandlecaneasilybemovedforwardbyremovingthescrewsandnuts,andreinstallingthe
assemblyintothemostforwardsetofholes.

CONTROLS
ThecontrolpaneloftheToltec100isrecesseddirectlybehindthespeakeronthetopofthedetector.Thisareaisthe
mostprotectedplaceforthecontrolswhenusingthedetectorineitherthepolemountofthebodymountconfigurations.
1. GROUNDADJUST.Thiscontrolisatenturndevice,andisusedtoadjustthedetectorsothatitdoesn'trespondto
thegroundmineralizationwhenthedetectorisusedintheallmetalmode.
2. SENSITIVITY.ThiscontrolisusedtosetthesensitivityintheDiscriminatemode.Thepresetmarkatapprox.'7'on
thecontrolwillusuallyprovidetheoptimumoperatingpowerforthedetector.Mostsituationswillallowtheuseofthe
detectoratevenhighersettings,andofcourseyouwillwanttosetthiscontrolashighaspossible,butatthemaximum
settingthedetectormaybecomeerraticandnoisy.Ifthedetectorseemstobegivingmanyfalsesignals,orbeepingtoo
much,turningthecontrolbackdowntothepresetorlesswillmakeitmuchmoreusable.
3. DISCLEVEL.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetector'sresponsetounwantedmetallictrash.Atthelowest
setting,thedetectorwilleliminatemostironobjects,butwillstillrespondinapositivemannertolightfoil,bottlecaps,
pulltabs,coinsandmostothermetallicitems.Astheknobsettingisincreasedintheclockwisedirection,responseto
moreofthesemetallictargetsisreversed,sothattheyarerejected.Everydetectorcanvarysomewhat,soit'sagood
ideatotrysomeofthecommoncoinsandjunkitemsonyourdetectortoseewheretheyarerejected.Thepresetmark
willbeidealwhenusingthedetector,sinceitwillstillallowyoutodetectnickelsandsmallgoldrings.
4. NORM/ATUOTUNINGSWITCH.ThiscontrolisusedtoadjusttheNotchfilterresponsetothedesiredtargetlevel
whenthedetectorisusedintheNotchDiscmode.Typicallythismodeisusedtorejecttheresponsetopulltabs,and
thepresetmarkshouldbeveryclosetoeliminatetheresponsetomosttabs.Rememberthatthenotchislikeawindow,
soifthecontrolissettoohightheeffectwillbeverysimilartowhathappensifit'ssettoolow.
5. TUNING.ThiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetectortothethresholdsoundintheAllMetalmode.Thisthreshold
sounddoesn'tappearwhentheisineitheroftheDiscriminatemodes.
6. DISCMODESWITCH.Thisswitchisusedtoturntheunitspoweroffandon,toselectthedesiredmodeof
Discriminationoperation,andtotesttheunitsbatteries.IntheNormalposition,theNotchfilterisnotused,andthe
detectoronlyresponsetothetargetsabovethesettingoftheDiscLevelControl.WhenintheNotchLevelsettingshould
alwaysbehigherthantheDiscLevelsetting.ThepresetmarksaregoodstartingplacesforNotchoperation.
7. ALLMETAL/DISCSWITCH.Thistoggleswitchisusedtoselectthedetector'sprimaryoperatingmode.Thismode
willbeselectedwhenevertheModeChange/Tuningswitchisnotdepressed.WhentheModeChange/Tuningswitchis
depressedandheld,thedetectortransferstotheoppositemode.TheMeterwillreadthetargetIDwhenthedetectorisin
theDiscmode,andwillreadCoinDepthwhenthedetectorisintheAllMetalmode.
8. MODECHANGE/TUNINGSWITCH.Depressingthisswitchandholdingitdown,causesthedetectortoswitchto
themodethatisnotselectedbytheON/OFFMODESWITCH.Whentheswitchisreleased,thedetectorreturnstothe
selectedprimarymode.
TUNING
ALLMETALMODETUNING
1. Setthecontrolsasfollows:AUTO/NORMSWITCHtoAUTO,ALLMETAL/DICSWITCHtoALLMETAL,DISCMODE
SIWTCHtoDISC.
2. TurntheTUNINGcontrolhighenoughtomakethethresholdsoundslightlylouderthanyouwouldnormallyuseit.
3. Lowerthesearchcoilfromabout1footabovethegroundtoabout1inchfromthegroundinareasonablyrapid
fashion.Noticeasthecoilapproachesthegroundwhathappenstothethresholdsound.
4. Ifthethresholdsoundincreases,turntheGROUNDADJUSTcontrolslightlycounterclockwise,andtryloweringthe
searchcoilagain.Ifthesounddecreasesasthecoilapproachestheground,turntheGROUNDADJUSTcontrolinthe
clockwisedirection,andtryloweringthesearchcoilagain.
5. KeepadjustingtheGROUNDADJUSTcontrolinaccordancewithstep4above,untilthereisverylittleornochange
inthethresholdsoundasthecoilisloweredtothegroundinareasonablyrapidmotion.
NOTE:ThegroundadjustcanbeaccomplishedwiththeNORM/AUTOswitchintheNORMposition,buttheMode
Change/Tuningswitchmustbedepressedmomentarilywiththecoilintheairtoretunethedetectortothresholdbefore
loweringthecoiltotheground.
6. Retunethethresholdbacktoanormaloperatinglevel.TheToltecisnowreadytouseintheAllMetalmode.
DISCRIMINATEMODETUNING
TuningtheToltec100foruseintheDiscriminatemoderequiresthatthedetectorbeproperlytunedintheALLMETAL
modefirst,sincetheALLMETALsignalisusedinthecircuitrythatderivestheIDandtheDiscriminatesignals.Alsothe
settingofthethresholdsignalsestablishestheminimumsoundfordeeptargets,soturningthissettingupwillgreatly
enhancethesoundfordeeptargets,althoughthedetectormaybecomeerratic,whileadjustingthethresholdtoolowwill
causealossofdepth.
AftertheALLMETALmodeprocedureisaccomplished,theonlyadditionaltuningforoperationistosettheDISCmode
switchtotheproperdesiredmode,andtoadjusttheDISCandNOTCHlevelstotheirdesiredsettings.SettheSENSITIVITY
controlatpresetpointorhigher.RememberthattheNotchLevelsettingshouldalwaysbesethigherthantheDiscLevel.
SELECTINGTHEPROPERMODEOFOPERATION
TheToltec100offersthreebasicmodesofoperation,theAllMetalmode,theNormalDiscmode,andtheNotchDisc
mode.IftheGroundAdjustcontrolhasbeenadjustedcorrectly,allmodesaremineralfree.TheAllMetalmodeisnotbased
onmotionofthesearchcoil,andutilizesaThresholdtone.Thismodeofferstheabilitytopinpointwithoutmotion,andprovides
exactgroundcancelingwhilealsoprovidingaCoinDepthreading.ThetwoDiscmodesarebothbasedonveryslightmotion
ofthesearchcoil,andbothofthesearecompletelysilentinoperation.
The81/2"concentricsearchcoilfurnishedasstandardischosentoprovidethemaximumefficiencywhenthedetectoris
usedforcoinhunting.Thiscoilsizewillyieldthebestcompromisewhenthedetectorisusedforthispurpose.Anyofthe
concentricorwidescancoilsmadebyTesoroasofthiswritingwillworkontheToltec100,andcangreatlyincreasethe
abilitiesofthedetector.
Whencoinshooting,werecommendthatyoudonotusetheNotchDiscmodeunlesstheareayouarehuntingisvirtually
litteredwithpulltabs.UsingthemeterIDtoavoiddiggingtabsisgenerallythebestway,iftheareaiscleanenough.Youwill
probablynoticesomeslightincreaseindepthifyouuseonlytheNormDiscmode.Notethattheareaonthemeternoted
"PULLTABS"issomewhatnarrow,andsomeindividualtabsmayfalljustbeloworabovethisrange.Alsonotethatbrokenor
benttabscanfalloutsidethemarkedrange.Generally,mosttabsthatfalloutsidetherangeonthemeterwillbebelowthe
range,andwillbeverysmallorbrokentabs.
NuggethuntingrequiresthatyouusetheAllMetalmodesincetheresponsetosmallgoldtargetsissoclosetoiron.
Autotuningisalsogenerallyrecommendedbymanynuggethunters,butnotnecessary.Sincenuggethuntingisusually
doneinareasthathavemanyhotrocks,blacksand,andotherheavyminerals,itmaybenecessarytochangetheGround
Adjustasconditionschange.AlsoaWideScancoilwillbelessaffectedbytheminerals.
FIELDUSE
Thedetectorshouldbeheldinapositionthatiscomfortableforyou.Swingthedetectorfromsidetosideinaboutathree
footarc,overlappingsucceedingstrokeswell.Thismotioniscalleda“sweep.”TheToltec100wasdesignedtogetmaximum
depthwithoutthefranticpacerequiredofearliermotiondetectors,sogoatapacethatiscomfortableforyou.Aneasypace
ispreferred.Infact,tryingtohunttoofastinDiscriminatemayevencausealossofdepthinheavilymineralizedlocations.
Itwouldbehelpfultoburysomecoinsandtrashmetaljunkitemsinanareathatyouknowisclearofothermetal
objects,andthentrytheunitinitsvariousmodes.ChecktheareainAllMetalModefirsttobesureitsclearoftrashthen
burythetargetsatleastafootapart,andfrom2to6inchesdeeptostart.Makeamapofthetestbedtobesureyouknow
whateachtargetisandhowdeepitis.Practiceonthesetargetstofamiliarizeyourselfwithyourdetector’stargetresponse.
Thiswillalsohelpyoulearnthepropersweeprateforbestoperation.
InALLMETALmodeoperation,keepthedetectortunedsothatthereisaslightthresholdbuzzingofsound.Thisiseasy
todobecausegroundmineralsdonotaffecttheAllMetalmodeifproperlyadjusted.Regardlessofwhichmodeyouareusing
trytokeepthecoilheightconstantandclosetotheground.Mostpeopletendtoraisethecoilattheendofasweep,much
likeapendulum,especiallyiftheyarehurrying.Trytoavoidthis,asanyincreaseinheightwillcauseacorrespondinglossof
depth.
Inareaswithwellkeptlawns,theeasiestwaytomaintainaconstantsearchcoilheightistoallowthecoiltorestonthe
grassasyousweepfromsidetoside.Inroughandrockyareasitisbestnotto“scrub”thecoilontheground,astherocks
willactlikeabrasives,andwearawaythecoilhousing.Shouldwearthroughoccur,itwillusuallydestroythesearchcoil
beyondrepair,soitisalwaysbesttokeepascuffcoveronthecoil,theyareavailablefromyourdealer.Sweepthecoilas
closetothegroundaspossiblewithouttouching.Hittingthegroundorrocksmaycauseafalsesignalmuchlikeadesired
targetwould.Thehigheryouholdandsweepthecoilabovethegroundthelessdepthyou'llbeabletoobtain.
WhenoperatingintheDiscriminateMode,some“falsesignals”maybecausedbyheavyconcentrationsoftrashmetal
objects,byverylargetrashitems,orbyelectricalinterference.Thesesignalswillsounddifferentthangoodtargetsignals
becausetheyaregenerallyshort,choppysounds.Attheendofyoursweep,asyouthereversethecoildirection,the
detectorismostsusceptibletotrashinducednoise.Therearetwowaystotellwhetherthesesoundsaregooddeepsignals
ortrash“noise.”Thefirstisbyrepeatability.Trashinducednoiseswillnotberegularasyousweepthecoiloverthesuspected
targetseveraltimes,whereasagoodtargetresponsewillberepeatableattheexactspotwitheachsweep.Thesecond
methodistoswitchtoAllMetalModeandcheckthetargetresponsesound.Iftheresponseisweak,itmaywellbeadeep,
goodtarget;butiftheresponseisverystrong,itisprobablytrash.Notethatacoinclosetothesurfacecangiveadouble
beepsound,butitisregularandrepeatable.Raisingthecoilaninchortwowillrestorethesinglebeeponsurfacetargets.
Ifthereisanydoubtwhetheratargetisgoodornot,DIGIT.Forthissamereason,intheDiscriminateMode,itisbest
nottouseahigherDISCLEVELsettingthannecessary.NickelsandmostsmallerringsarerejectedwhentheDISCLEVEL
issettorejectpulltabsonanymetaldetectorthatisaTRDiscriminatorliketheToltec100.Ifyoudon’tdiganyjunkatall,
youaresurelypassingupalotofgoodfindsaswell.SettheDISCLEVELonlyhighenoughtosuittheconditionswhereyou
aresearching.
WhenusingtheTargetIDfeaturesinverytrashyareas,itwillprobablybenecessarytoreducethesweeplengthtojusta
fewinchesasyoupassdirectlyoverthetarget.SincetheToltecdiscriminatorisbasedonveryslowmotion,alongsweepin
atrashyareawilljustreadallthecombinedsignalsratherthanjustthedesiredtarget.
PINPOINTING
ThesweepspeedoftheToltec100isslowenoughtoallowpinpointingintheDISCRIMINATEmode,butwillrequirea
littlemorepractice.Movethecoilslowlyfromsidetosideandthenfromfronttobackoverthetarget.Raisingthecoilslightly
andslowingthesweepdirectlyoverthetargetwillnarrowdownthedetectionareaenoughthatit'seasytotellwherethecoil
centerisattheinstantofsound.
ToPinpointinNormalmodedoesnotrequireanymotion,somaybeeasierformostpeople.Topinpointatargetthat
doesn'tsaturatetheaudio,justmovethecoilforwardandback,andsidetosideuntilyougetthestrongestsound.Thetarget
willbedirectlybelowthecoilcenter.Iftheaudiosaturatesoveralargearea,simplypushthetuningbuttonmomentarilyover
theareatodetunethedetector.Thiswillnarrowitsfieldofresponsetoallowyoutoonceagainseektheareaofstrongest
response.Itmaybenecessarytoretunemorethanoncewiththistechnique.Thecoindepthmeterisalsoagoodpinpointing
tool,sinceitdoesn'tsaturateundernormalconditions.SimplyswitchtoNormaltothesideofthetarget,movethecoilover
thetarget,andmoveituntilyougetthemostforwarddeflectionofthemeter.Thiswillnotonlytellyouyourtargetcenter,but
depthalsoifyoudidnottuneoveratarget.
RECOMMENDEDRECOVERYMETHODS
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
TheToltec100isprovidedwithamanualbatterytestfeaturessothatyoucanalwaysbesurethatyouaregettingtop
performancefromit.Thebatteriesshouldbecheckedafterthedetectorhasbeenonforabout10minutes,andthen
periodicallyasyouareusingitforlongperiods.ToactivatetheBatteryTest,simplyturntheDiscModeswitchtotheBatt
Testposition.Theremainingstrengthofthebatteriesisdisplayedonthemeter.Whenthemeterreadsintheredareamarked
REPLACEBATTS,it'stimefornewbatteries.
Toreplacebatteries,justpullonbothofthenylatchfastenersonthebatterydooratthelowerrearoftheunit.Theentire
doorwillpopoff.Removethetwobatterypacksoneatatimebydisconnectingtheclipleads,andremovethebatteriesfrom
thepack.Replacethebatteries,observingthepolarityindicatorsonboththebatterypackandbatteries.Replacethepackin
thedetectorandfastenthecliplead,takingcaretoensurethattheclipleadsfittightonthebatterypack.Whenbothpacks
havebeenchanged,replacethebatterydoorbyputtingitinplaceanddepressingbothnylatchfastenerstolockthemin
place.
Shouldyoudesiretodoso,rechargeableNickelCadmiumbatteriescanbesubstitutedforthestandardAApenlight
cells.IndividualAAsizecellsarereadilyavailableatmostelectronicstores,aswellasthechargersforthem,andtheycan
beinsertedintothestandardholdersusedintheToltec.Theinitialbatterytestreadingwillbelowerthannormal,butwillnot
dropasfastwithuse,untilthebatteriesarecompletelydischarged.
GENERALCAREANDUSE
Ifthedetectoristobestoredforalongperiodoftime,itisbesttoremovethebatterypackfromthedetector.Thiswill
preventinternaldamagetothedetectorifthebatteriesshouldleak.
Thesearchcoiliswaterproofandmaybesubmergedineitherfreshorsaltwater.Cautionshouldbeexercisedtoprevent
waterfromenteringthechassis,whereitcoulddamagetheelectroniccircuitry.Afterthecoilisusedinsaltwater,thecoil
andlowerstemassemblyshouldberinsedwellwithfreshwatertopreventcorrosionofthemetalparts.Whenusedinthe
bodymountconfiguration,youshouldnotallowthecableconnectorstobesubmerged.Severalwaterproofadaptersare
availablethroughyourdealerwhichwillallowyoutowaterprooftheconnectionbetweenthesearchcoilandextendercable
connectors.
Thereareseveralgoodbookstohelpthebeginnerlearnhowtousethedetector,wheretosearchandhowtorecovera
targetwithoutdamagingtheenvironment.Agoodcoinshootercanrecoveralotoffindsandleavethearealookingasthough
hehadneverbeenthere.Aboveall,alwaysfillyourholeswhenyouhaverecoveredthetarget.
TESOROMetalDetectorsaresoldthroughindependentdealers,whoarealmostalwaystreasurehuntersthemselves.
Theycanprovideyouwithyoumuchneededinformationabouthowtouseyourdetector,howtoprobe,pluganddiginyour
locale,andanswermostofyourquestionsabouttreasurehuntingingeneral.
Theuseofearphoneswillbenefityouintwoways.Mostearphoneswillveryeffectivelyblockoutmostoftheambient
noise,suchastrafficnoiseandwindnoise,whichwillenableyoutobetterhearthefaintersignalscausedbythedeeper
targets.Obviously,theolder,morevaluablecoinswillprobablybedeeperthantheoneswhichwerelostlastweek,soyou
shouldtakeadvantageofanythingthatwillhelpyouheartheweakersignals.Secondly,usingearphoneswillgreatlyextend
thebatterylife,sinceittakesmuchlesspowertooperatethem.TheDiabloisnotequippedwithavolumecontrol,butdoes
havealimitingcircuitintheearphonejack.Iflessvolumeisdesiredwithearphones,youmaywanttouseearphoneswitha
builtinvolumecontrol.Anygood8or16ohmsetwith1/4inchstereojackwilldo.
