What is the LearningCheck App?
The LearningCheck™ App for the TI-83 Plus lets you:
•view assignments, including text and images.
•record answers to assignments on your TI-83 Plus.
•create and use electronic response forms.
Educators can also use the LearningCheck App to assess student
work; students can use the LearningCheck App for
self-assessment.
The LearningCheck App can be used as a standalone App on a
TI-83 Plus or with the TI-Navigator™ classroom network (version
1.0 or higher).

The LearningCheck™ App has built-in help for each type of
question. With a question displayed, select MENU and then select
HELP to display a help screen.
The instructions in this guidebook are only for this application. If

Starting and uitting the Application
Starting the Application
1. Press Œto display the list of applications on your
TI-83 Plus.
2. Select
LearnChk.The application’s information screen is
displayed.
3. Press any key to continue. The ASSIGNMENT LIST screen is
displayed.
Quitting the Application
From the ASSIGNMENT LIST screen, select MENU (press o)and
then select EXIT APP,or press y 5.

Navigating
Selecting Menu Items
You can select menu items in the following ways.
•Press †or }to highlight the menu item, and then press
Íto select it.
•Press the number key that corresponds to the menu item.
Using On-Screen Options
Each screen displays one or more options along the bottom of the
screen. To select an option, press the graphing key directly below
the option.

Using the TI Keyboard
To do this …
Select menu items Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight a
menu item, and then press Enter to select it.

If the menu item is numbered, type the number
that corresponds to it.
Quit the application ¥Q
Select on-screen
options ¥plus the number that corresponds to the
graphing key directly below the option:

You can also press the Tab key on the keyboard
to select the TAB on-screen option.

Distributing Assignments to a TI-83 Plus
•Use TI Connect™ software and a TI-GRAPH LINK™ cable to
distribute assignments from a computer to a TI-83 Plus.
•Use a TI-GRAPH LINK unit-to-unit cable to distribute
assignments from one TI-83 Plus to another.
•Use the TI-Navigator™ classroom network (version 1.0 or
higher) to distribute assignments to all devices that are
connected to the wireless hubs.

Completing an Assignment
Overview
When you start the LearningCheck™ App, the ASSIGNMENT LIST
screen displays the titles of the assignments, in alphabetical
order, that are currently installed on the TI-83 Plus.
After you select an assignment and enter your user information,
the Item List displays the title of each item in the assignment. You
select the first item in the list, and then navigate through the
assignment, answering questions or reading explanatory items, as
required by the instructions.

An answer file is automatically created for each assignment and
is associated with your username. Your responses to items in the
assignment are stored in this application variable (AppVar) file.
The AppVar name is the same as the assignment AppVar name,
except that it begins with the letter U.
Example: Your assignment, Real Numbers and Operations, has
the file name REALNUM.8xk. The answer file name is
UREALNUM.8xk.
Note •Another AppVar, NavPlay, is created when you complete an
assignment. NavPlay stores information about your progress
through the assignment so that you can exit the assignment
and then return to the same location within the assignment the
next time you access it.
•If you delete NavPlay, this information is lost, and you will
return to the beginning of the assignment the next time you
access it. Deleting NavPlay does not affect the answer file.

Opening and avigating through an Assignment
1. Start the LearningCheck™ App. The ASSIGNMENT LIST screen
displays the titles of the assignments that are currently
installed on the TI-83 Plus.
Tip Select INFO on the ASSIGNMENT LIST screen to display
information about the assignment, such as the AppVar name
(*.8xv), number of items, and any other info that the assignment
creator supplied.
2. Move the cursor to an assignment and press Í.The
ASSIGNMENT SIGN IN dialog box is displayed.

3. Type your username and then press Íto display the Item
List screen for the assignment.
Note •The username can be 3 – 32 characters long, and can only
contain letters, numbers, and spaces.
•Entering a username is like writing your name on your
assignment. Be sure to remember your username so that you
can return to your assignment later, if necessary.
4. Move the cursor to the first item that you want to view, and
then press Í.

5. Answer the question or read the explanatory item. See the
following section for detailed instructions on how to answer
various types of questions.
Tip •Selecting NEXT to skip a question. You can return to it later.
•Press yand select NEXT to go to the previous question.
6. Use the following options to continue navigating through the
assignment.
•To display the next item, select NEXT,or press y ~.
•To check your answer,select CHK.This option may not be
available, depending on the purpose of the assignment.
The CHK option is not available on response forms.
•To display the previous item, select MENU and then select
PREVIOUS ITEM,or press y |.
•To return to the Item List screen, select MENU and then
select ITEM LIST,or press y z.
•To get help on how to navigate within a question, select
MENU and then select HELP.
•To pause the application, select MENU and then select
PAUSE APP.

•To return to the ASSIGNMENT LIST screen, select MENU and
then select ASSIGNMENT LIST.
When you have reached the end of the assignment, the Item List
screen is displayed.

Answering Multiple-Choice Questions
Response choices for multiple-choice questions are displayed
either in a list following the question or on an image. Some
multiple-choice questions allow you to select only one response
option; others allow you to select more than one.
Option buttons indicate that you
can only select one response
option.
Check boxes indicate that you can
select more than one response
option.

•Select TAB to move the cursor to a response option, and then
press ¸to select it.
Tip When the response options are on an image:
•Select PIC or TXT to toggle between the image (PIC) and the
question text (TXT).
•Select TAB to move the cursor from one response option to
another.
•Press yand then select TAB to move the cursor backwards
through the response options.
•To deselect a response option, move the cursor to the
selected response, and then press ¸.
Tip If only one response choice is allowed, you can simply select
another response option to change your answer; you do not
have to deselect the current response choice.

Answering Fill-in-the-Blank Questions
Some fill-in-the-blank questions require you to type an answer.
Others require you to choose an answer from a drop-down list of
choices.
1. If necessary, select TAB to move the cursor to the blank that
you want to complete.
2. Press ¸to select the blank. A blinking cursor appears at
the beginning of the selected blank.

3. Type your answer or select an answer from the drop-down
list.
Tip Press ‘to clear the answer field.
Text answer required:
Selection from the drop-down list required:
Numeric answer required:
Type your answer in the blank with the blinking cursor.
Alpha-lock is automatically turned on when a text
answer is required.
Select your answer from the list of answer
Type your answer in the blank with the blinking
cursor. Not all key presses are accepted, because a
numeric answer is required. If you press a key that
isn’t accepted, that key is ignored.
Alpha-lock is turned off when a numeric answer is
required.

Answering Open-Response Questions
Open-response questions are followed by a large field in which
you type your answer. The length of your answer is limited only by
the amount of available memory in the TI-83 Plus.
When the characters you type reach the end of a line, they wrap
to the next line. As you reach the bottom of the field, previous
lines scroll off the top of the field.
1. Press }or †to scroll through the question text.
2. Select 8ANS to move the cursor to the answer field, and then
type your answer.
