Before starting to service an appliance, familiarize yourself with all

2.1 Safety Before Servicing the Appliance

Before disassembly, removal, or installation of any
component…
9Turn off electrical power by removing the power cord from
the electrical outlet or putting the circuit breaker in the OFF
position.
9Be sure the entire appliance has cooled to a safe
temperature (including filters and light bulbs), and grease has
solidified in grease trays.

Use only authorized replacement parts for this appliance. Use of
unauthorized substitutions may cause non-compliance with safety
standards set for home appliances, will void the warranty, and may
create safety hazards resulting in damage, bodily injury, or death.

Electrical hazards…
9Before servicing the appliance, remove electrical power by
either disconnecting the power cord from the wall receptacle
or by putting the circuit breaker in the OFF position.
9If tests must be conducted while the appliance is live, always
use a residual-current-operated circuit breaker. The
protective conductor connection must not exceed the
recommended values.
9When repairs are complete, perform a function test in
accordance with the appropriate regulations.
9Do not, under any circumstances, cut or remove the separate
ground wire or the third (ground) prong from the power cord
plug.
9Improper grounding or reverse polarization will cause
malfunction, which can damage the appliance and create an
electrical shock hazard. Make sure the circuit is properly
grounded and polarized in accordance with applicable local
codes and ordinances. Receptacle replacement shall be in

always rinse the cleaning/polishing materials with clear water and

3 GENERAL
The Thermador VCINxxJP and VCIBxxJP Professional Series Custom
Inserts are available in 36-, 48-, and 54-inch widths, and are designed
for installation with all professional-style cooktops and ranges. They
may be used with custom wall or island hood applications to create a
seamless look.
VCIBxxJP models include an integrated VTN1030C 1000 CFM blower
as well as a liner (LINER2xx) to protect the exterior base.
VCINxxJP models include a set of four trim pieces which can be used
in lieu of the optional LINER2xx accessory. For these models, a
blower must be purchased separately.
All models include dishwasher-safe grease trays and commercial-style
stainless steel baffle filters. Convenience features include a
10-minute delayed shutoff, a Clean Filter indicator light, and an Auto
function, which enables a sensor that recalculates the temperature
every 30 seconds and adjusts the blower speed accordingly.
Custom inserts are shipped with halogen lamps, a transition with
backdraft damper, and pig tail wire assembly for use when wiring a
remote blower.
3.1 Specifications

3.2 Blower Options for VCINxxJP Models*
The capacity of the hood is determined by the optional blower selected
and the ducting used.
Blower options include inline (mounted between kitchen and external
wall), remote (mounted on roof or external wall), or integrated
(mounted on hood). All blowers listed below are 120V AC and a 15
AMP circuit breaker is recommended. For VCIN60RP Use VTN1090R

NOTICE
The 16 or18 screws (#8A X 3/8 PH PN HD ZNC) used to attach
either the trim set or the LINER2xx to the custom insert are supplied
with the custom insert. The same screws are used for either
application, so if a LINER2xx is installed after the 4-piece trim set
was initially installed, save and reuse the screws when installing the
LINER2xx.

3.3 Accessories
Accessories include a stainless steel backsplash for the 36” and 48”
custom inserts (PAxxJBS), a stainless steel remote control panel
(VCI2REMKS), and a stainless steel custom hood liner (LINER2xx).
3.4 Data Plate
After removing the filter and spacer, on the right, the English and
French data plates reflecting model number and FD number will be
visible on the right side of the frame (see Figure 2). The Spanish
language data plate is located on the left side.
The first 4 positions of the FD number reflect the year/month the
product was built. FD numbers that begin with 92 were built in 2012,
93 = 2013, etc.
The first 4 digits of the FD number (9207) shown in Figure 3 indicate
the VCIN36JP/01 was built in July 2012.
3.5 Warranty
Find the complete product warranty statement in the Use and Care
Guide.
During the warranty period, BSH Home Appliances (BSH) will pay for
all repair labor and replacement parts found to be defective due to
materials and workmanship. Service must be performed by an
authorized service provider during normal working hours. BSH will
have no responsibility or liability for repairs or work performed by a
non-authorized servicer.

4 OPERATION
4.1 Control and Control Panel
The 120V /60Hz / 60A control board is populated by 6 push-buttons
(buttons 7and 8 have been removed from the board) and LEDs for the
control panel, and serves as a selector switch. The mode is selected
when a button is pressed. The control board then sends commands to
the relay board / power supply through the ribbon cable used for
communication.
The LED above each button will illuminate when that particular
function is activated.
4.1.1 AUTO Function
When the automatic blower function is enabled by pressing AUTO, the
function will control both the activation and speed of the fan based on
the temperature read by the heat sensor on the control board.
If the AUTO function is selected while the blower is already running,
(LO,MED,HI, or DELAY), the control will disable that function and
immediately initiate the automatic function.
When AUTO is enabled, the control will poll the temperature every 30
seconds and automatically adjust the blower speed accordingly.

< 86° F (30°C) Disabled
86° - 103° F (30 - 39°C) Low speed
104° - 121° F (40 - 49°C) Medium speed
122° - 166° F (50 - 74°C) High speed
4.1.2 DELAY Function
If the DELAY button is pressed when the blower is off, the fan will turn
on at the high speed setting for 10 minutes, then shut off.
If the blower is operating when the DELAY button is pressed, the fan
will run for 10 minutes at the currently selected speed, then shut off.
4.1.3 Clean Filter Reminder
After 40 hours of operation, the LED above the FILTERS button will
illuminate, indicating that the filters need to be cleaned.
Pressing the button for 3 seconds will reset the 40-hour period and
turn the LED off. The activated tone will occur after reset.
4.1.4 Heat Sensor
The control board includes an over-temperature sensor to protect the
hood from high temperatures which may damage components.
Over-Temperature Condition - The sensor is set to activate at 167º F
(75º C) and reset when temperature returns to 140º F (60º C).
When the over-temperature condition is activated, the ventilator will
turn on high, and the corresponding LED will blink at .5 second
intervals.
While the over-temperature condition is activated, the ventilator speed
and delay switches are not functional. Light controls will remain
operational. When the sensor cools and once again reaches 140º F

(60º C), the control will revert back to the operational state prior to the
over-temperature condition.
Over-Temperature Fault Condition - The circuit is equipped with an
alarm indicating that the over-temperature protection is not working
due to a damaged sensor. In the case of this extreme condition, all
speed-indicator LEDs will start blinking. All controls will still be
operational except the speed indicators.
4.2 Ventilator / Power Harness
The ventilator / power harness is wrapped in black sleeving. One end
is connected to the main relay/power board, and the other end has a
molex plug connector for the blower, as well as the L1 (black) and
neutral (white) power supply leads.
4.3 Main Relay Board / Power Supply
The 120V / 60Hz / 16A main relay board / power supply is connected
to high voltage. Relays on a printed circuit board beneath the housing
control the ventilator and lights. The relays react to input and
commands from the control board and activate the components in the
hood.
4.4 Lights
Halogen lamp assemblies include a receptacle, a G-9 120V 40W bulb,
and lens cover.
There are two settings - normal and dim - which are controlled by the
resistor(s).

NOTICE
The heat sensor is not field-replaceable; the control must be replaced
when the sensor malfunctions.

To replace a halogen bulb, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry
the lens cover off the lamp assembly. Remove the damaged bulb from
the receptacle. Wearing gloves or using a cloth, insert the new 120V
40W G-9 bulb into the receptacle.
CAUTION
4.5 Resistor
A 100-watt 68 ohm resistor operates the dimming function of the lights.
When selected, the brightness of the lamps is dimmed by
approximately 40%.
There is one resistor for every two halogen lamp assemblies installed.

Any surface contamination, including the oil from fingertips, may
damage a halogen bulb.

5 DISASSEMBLY
5.1 Filters, Spacer Panels, Grease Trays
For models with more than 2 filters, remove center filter(s) first. Push
filter up, then pull out from the bottom. Repeat with remaining filter(s).
Spacer panels are removed in the same manner as filters; push up,
then pull out from the bottom.
Grease trays lift up and out.
5.2 Filter Top Trim
To detach the stainless steel filter top trim from the stainless
control/light panel, remove the filters, spacer panels, and grease trays,
then remove the 3 screws and washers which secure the filter top trim
panel.
5.3 Electronics
The electronics mounting panel supports the resistor and the main
relay board / power supply. The control module is mounted to the rear
of the control mounting assembly, which is attached to the stainless
steel control/light panel. The halogen lamp assemblies are also affixed
to the stainless control/light panel.
To access the resistor(s), relay board / power supply, control module,
or halogen lamp assemblies, first remove the filters, spacers, grease
trays, and filter top trim as described above.
Next, remove the 2 screws securing the junction box cover to the core
partition (see Figure 12), and disengage the junction box tabs from the
custom insert housing.

Remove the 4 side screws securing the core partition to brackets, and
4-6 screws securing the core partition to top mounting plate. (Filter
bracket will remain attached to core partition.)
5.3.1 Resistor(s) and Relay Board / Power Supply
The gold-colored resistors are attached to the electronics mounting
panel with 2 Phillips-head screws. To detach, disconnect the wire
harness and remove the screws.
The main relay board / power supply is secured to the mounting panel
with 1 screw on the side of the relay, and 4 plastic tabs on the relay
housing, which engage with 4 slots on the mounting panel.
To remove the power supply, first remove the screw, then press the
two leftmost tabs forward to release the module.
5.3.2 Control Module
The control is secured to 3 studs affixed to the control mounting plate
(which is taped to the control mounting panel) by 3 M4 hex nuts. To
remove the control, disconnect the communication harness, and
remove the 3 nuts.

NOTICE
When replacing the control module, buttons 7 and 8 must be
removed prior to installation. Instructions are provided with the part.

The control mounting panel assembly is secured to the stainless steel
control/light panel by 4 corner studs (which are permanently affixed to
the assembly) and 4 M5 nuts. Due to the offset position of the taped
mounting plate, this assembly is not serviceable at this time.
5.3.3 Halogen Lamp Assemblies
The halogen lamp assemblies are also affixed to the stainless steel
control/light panel.
The halogen lamp receptacles will snap out. Depress the clips on the
receptacle housing (using a flat blade screwdriver, if necessary), while
gently pushing the receptacle downward through the front of the
canopy as shown in Figure 18. Disconnect the wire harness.

6 TROUBLESHOOTING
The procedures below are recommended if the custom insert
malfunctions…
6.1 Self-test Program
Press the FAN and DELAY buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to
enable the test program, which activates the following sequence...
1. LEDs switch on simultaneously
2. LEDs switch off simultaneously
3. Blower runs at low speed with corresponding LED illuminated
4. Blower runs at medium speed with corresponding LED
illuminated
5. Blower runs at high speed with corresponding LED illuminated
6. Blower switches off
7. Light switch turns on at maximum power
8. Lights are dimmed
9. Lights turn off
10. Audible beep indicates that self-test is completed
6.2 Additional Troubleshooting Steps
If the blower or hood is malfunctioning, verify the following…
9Filters are sufficiently clean to allow air to flow freely
9Wire and plug connections are tight and correct
9Buttons on the control board are not sticking
9Audible switching noises can be heard from the main relay /
power supply
Using a voltmeter…
9Check for 120V coming into the unit at the power supply leads
9Check for 120V at each of the speed wires to chassis ground
