INTRODUCTION
Please read all the instructions carefully before using the thermometer
Thermofocus is exceptionally easy to use to take a body temperature
from a short distance. However, to avoid incorrect measurements, when
taking the fever limit yourself to use Thermofocus in the same circumstances
as conventional thermometers (Fig. 1 .
Use Thermofocus in a draught-free room at a constant temperature
between 16°C (60.8°F and 40°C (104°F .
Ensure that the subject has not recently been in a draughty place or one
in which the temperature is significantly different from that in which you
are using Thermofocus (Fig. 2 .
If the thermometer is taken from a room with a temperature different from
that in which it is being used, wait for 20/30 minutes to acclimatize the
device before using it. Be sure to also wait for the E.6 signal to disappear
from the display (this signal is not present in model 0700C .......
Do not use the thermometer on a perspiring forehead, as this may
affect the reading (Fig. 3 . A baby's temperature may, if necessary be
taken from his/her navel.
Thermofocus has been primarily designed to take a temperature from the
forehead. Therefore if the device is to be used on the navel, or other
areas, please read the appropriate chapter first.
The lens of the thermometer is the most delicate part of the device. It
consists of a small concave gold-plated mirror, which must be kept clean
and undamaged. The accuracy of the reading may be affected if the lens
is damaged or dirty.
Avoid handling the thermometer, particularly the tip, more than necessary
before taking a reading.
When taking a reading, it is important to hold the thermometer perpendicular
to the forehead of the subject, taking care to hold aside any hair to clear
an area of at least 2cm (3/4 inch around the light point.................
Do not use the thermometer in contact with the ear or any other surface
area of the body.
Keep the device away from water and heat, including direct sunlight.
Do not drop or knock the device, and do not use if damaged.
No harm can be caused should the aiming lights be accidentally
pointed in the eyes: the beams are absolutely harmless!.............

PREFACE
Congratulations! You have just bought the most modern and safest device
to measure body temperature.
Thermofocus is convenient and easy to use. Indeed, It is the first "non-contact"
medical thermometer. The device enables the temperature of adults and
children to be ta en without touching the s in, simply by moving the thermometer
close to the forehead at the distance indicated by the device. With Thermofocus
there is no need to place the thermometer in any part of your baby's body.
A sleeping baby will not be wo en when Thermofocus is used nor will it be
caused discomfort by the device if awa e.
HOW IT WORKS
Thermofocus receives infrared emissions from the body, and in particular
from the forehead. The forehead is the ideal part of the body from which to
ta e a temperature because it is supplied by the temporal artery, which
receives blood through the aorta and the carotid artery, guaranteeing a
considerable flow of blood. Moreover, the forehead is the only part of the
body close to the brain, which is not covered in hair.
The brain is the most important and delicate organ in the body, and the one
most liable to damage from excessive temperature. Furthermore, the head
is the first part of the body to modify its temperature in the case of a fever,
whether rising or falling.
At every measurement, Thermofocus carries out in a few hundredths of a
second, a sequence of readings from 200 (mod.0700C) to 300 (other models)
which are amplified and computed by its sophisticated microprocessor,
together with the value of the ambient temperature, until the correct temperature
is shown on the display.
It is important to be aware that no single "normal" temperature applies
to e eryone: each person has his/her own temperature, which changes
not only during the day, but also according to certain physical acti ities
undertaken by the subject (for example, if a baby has been crying).
Moreover, an individual's temperature may be different in different regions
of the body, and may be influenced by the ambient temperature and other
external factors, depending on how the temperature is being ta en.
Till now, all methods of measuring temperature involved a certain inconvenience
to the subject, which can be stressful to a mother see ing to now her baby's
temperature but concerned about hurting or causing distress...........
Because of the heat loss from parts of the body uncovered by clothing, the
normal temperature measured on a person's forehead is usually lower than
that of covered parts of the body.
- English ----13

14.FH8 (Convertito)-18 Fri Jan 09 16:18:59 2004 Pagina 1
Therefore, Thermofocus' internal software automatically adjusts the temperature
to provide a reading, which correlates approximately to the oral temperature.
With models 0800, 0900 and series 0 500, you can change the setting from
the oral temperature to the rectal. Please refer to the appropriate chapter.
The normal temperature taken from the forehead of a healthy person, using
Thermofocus, can vary between 35°C (95°F) and 37.5°C ( 00.4°F), but in
an adult, it can also be below 35°C (95°F).
It is useful to know the normal temperature of each member of the family
when in good health and at various times of day, in order to be able to
detect a potential fever.
Fill in the following, simple chart and use it for reference. If you decide to
consult a doctor, inform him/her of the type of measurement you have taken
and your normal temperature under healthy conditions.
CLEANING THE LENS:
It is important never to touch the lens with your fingers or with any other
object, as it is very delicate.
For this reason, we recommend that you always protect the thermometer by
replacing its protective cap when not in use. If the lens need cleaning, lightly
moisten a cotton bud with alcohol, and apply gently to the lens without
pressing. Make sure that you clean away from the direction of the sensor,
located at the bottom of the lens.
Avoid cleaning with any other objects or liquids, which could scratch or in any
way damage the lens. While cleaning, ensure that no liquid penetrates
between the lens and the sensor.
CLEANING THE BODY OF THE THERMOMETER:
Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with soapy water or alcohol.............
DO NOT U E the thermometer for at least 30 minutes after cleaning.

If you change the point of measurement on the forehead, you ill obtain
different results.
The area from hich the temperature is taken has a radius of about 2 cm
(3/4 inch) around the point of light. It is very important to ensure that this
area is not obstructed by hair or clothing and does not include eyes or
eyebro s.
For this reason, it is important that the t o aiming lights are directed
to ards the middle of the forehead (bet een the nose and the hairline)
and that the thermometer is held perpendicular to the forehead.
Do not use the thermometer on a perspiring forehead.
Avoid taking the subject's temperature in a draughty location and ait
for several minutes before taking a measurement if the subject:
has alked (fig. 4);
has been in a draughty room or a place here the temperature is
significantly different from that in hich the thermometer is being
used;
has recently had a cold sponge or cold compress on the forehead;
has recently been earing a hat or a scarf;
has been exposed to any activity hich may affect the normal
temperature of the head such as bathing, sho ering, shampooing,
hair drying, etc.;
In the cases outlined above, ait a fe minutes for the temperature on
the forehead to stabilize. Alternatively, in the case of babies, the temperature
may be taken from the navel.
Oils or cosmetics on the forehead may give a lo er temperature reading
than the actual one, hile hair obstructing the forehead may cause a
slightly higher reading.
Do not use the device near large electromagnetic fields.
Failing to follow these guidelines may result in excessively high or
low readings which are in no way attributable to a faulty device.
Use of Thermofocus should not replace consultation ith a doctor.
There is no need for concern if the aiming lights are pointed into
the eyes: the beams are absolutely harmless!
16 - English -
If you need to take your own temperature, you can either use a mirror, or easily show
a child of ten years or older how to use Thermofocus.
Thermofocus never touches the body so there is no need for e pensive disposable
lens covers.

TAKING THE TEMPERATURE FROM THE NAVEL
WARNING: Taking the temperature rom the navel is recommended only
or small children.
Proceed as follows:
Models 0800, 0900, series 01500
Push the +++ button to activate the thermometer.
Remove the protective cap by turning it slightly.
With your free hand raise the baby's clothes to clear an area of
approximately 3 cm 1.2 inch) around the navel.
Press the +++ button again to activate the aiming lights and hold it down;
the display will show the symbol +++ .
Position the thermometer perpendicular to the navel until the two beams
of the aiming lights converge right on the navel.
Release the +++ button and hold the device steady until the light begins
to flash.
Read the temperature on the display.
- English ----17
The value which appears corresponds exactly to the navel's temperature,
and is also comparable to the underarm's.
However, certain factors may affect this reading, such as the clothes being
worn, the shape of the navel, digestive activity, or the thickness of the adipose
tissue.
Therefore it is recommended that readings be taken when the baby is well
and at different times during the day, noting the results on the table above
and taking them as a reference when future readings are taken...............
Deviations from these reference values indicate a fever. The greater the
deviation, the higher the fever. Remember to take the reading under the same
conditions as the reference temperature: at the same time of day, at the same
time before or after a meal, wearing the same type of clothes and at the same
ambient temperature.
If a baby is restless, crying or has a perspiring forehead, or if it proves difficult
to take a temperature from the forehead, the reading can be taken from the
belly, just on the navel. It is very important to carry this out while the baby
is normally dressed. Simply lift his/her clothes immediately before taking the
temperature, in order to avoid heat loss from the belly.

18 - English -
Models 0700
Proceed in the same way as for the other models, but use the +++ button
instead of the +++ button.
The display will show an unusually high value, which is necessarily incorrect,
since the belly is usually covered and therefore not subject to any dissipation
of heat, unlike the forehead. You must deduct from this value the figure
indicated on the label on the back of the product, in order to get a temperature
which is comparable to the oral temperature.
E ample: Value read on the display = 38 °C (100.4°F); figure indicated on
the label = -1.5 °C (-2,7°F); therefore the oral temperature is appro imately
36.5 °C (97.7°F). This deduction must be performed for all readings
except when taking the temperature from the forehead.

OTHER MEASUREMENTS
Thermofocus can also be used to take other temperatures, using the same
method as for the navel (remembering to deduct the figure indicated on the
label for 0700 models):
the underarm temperature, by raising clothes strictly for the time needed
to take a reading (this method is not reliable if the armpits have not been
depilated);
the temperature of rooms, by pointing the device at a wall or piece of
furniture;
a babys bottle temperature as well as baby food or bathwater temperature,
in the same way as when measuring a rooms temperature, (2. above).
In the last two cases, take the temperature quickly so that condensation
does not form on the lens, and wait 30 minutes before taking any further
readings.

Display does not switch on:
batteries are flat or have been incorrectly inserted; replace the batteries
immediately or reinsert them correctly.
Two bright points of light are visible on the subject's forehead:.............
the distance from the device to the forehead is incorrect; move the thermometer
closer or further away until you see a single bright point of light.............
The point of light is hard to see:
there is too much light in the room or the batteries are running low; position
yourself to cast a shadow over the subject, or change the batteries.
The lens is damaged:
send the device to the manufacturer for assistance.
Water has penetrated the thermometer:
return immediately to the manufacturer for repair.
The temperature shown on the thermometer appears too low:..............
chec that the device has been used correctly (see "WARNINGS' section
of this handboo );
chec that the thermometer is held correctly perpendicular to the forehead,
as shown in figure 7;
chec that the lens is not dirty or damaged; if so, clean as indicated in the
appropriate section of this handboo or send for repair.
The temperature shown on the thermometer appears too high:..........
chec that the device has been used correctly (see "WARNINGS' section
