Installing the Grille
The
grille's
THIELlogo
can
be
rotated
so
it will read
correctly
flom either
ahorizontal
orverrical position.
Tochange
the
logo's
orientation,remove
itbypushing
itfrorn
behind.
rotate
theloso
tothedesired
position.
and
push
it backinto
the
grille
fiom the front.
The
SCS
grilles
have
8round
metallicdiscs
attached
tothe
bacl whichfit intocorresponding
ma_eneric
openings
onthe
cabinet's
baffle.Alignthesediscswith
thebafl1eopenings
tosecure
the
grille.
Speaker Placement
The
SCSsarespecially
designed
togive
a
high
level
ofperfbrmance
fiom avariety
of room locations
and
positions,
so
placement
isnon-critical.
They
can
be
placed
on
bookshelves.
mounted
towalls.
and
positioned
horizontalty
orvertically,
while
still
providing
a
de-qreeof realistic
musical
reproduction
not
usuallyobtainable
withunusual
ordifficult
placement
conditions.
Connecting the Speakers
The
SCS'sinputterminals
arelocated
at
therearof thecabinet.The
SCS
uses5-way
binding
posts
which
accept
several
types
of speakercable
termination
(spade
lugs.
banana
plugs.
etc.).Regardless
ofthetype
of terminationyou
use.ntake
sure
allconnections
arc tigltt.
It is
essentialforproperperfbrmance
that
bothspeakers
bewiredinthe
same
polarity.
The
speaker's
input
terminals
are
color
codedtofacilitate
this.Thewire
connected
tothered
terminal
ofeach
speakershould
beconnected
to
therespective
positive
outputtenninals
ofthe
amplifier.The
speakersshould
beconnected
tothe
arnplifierwith
high
quality
speaker
cable
toensureminimalloss
ofpower
and
proper
controlbythearnplifier.If thespeakers
arebeing
connected
toavacuum
tube
amplifierwithvarious
impedance
taps,
the
4 ohmtapwill probablyprovicle
thebestresults.
If theamplifierhas
aspeakerfuse
orif afuseis
usedin-linewith
the
speakers,we
recommend
avalue
of 2amps
ofthe
normal
blow-type.
Althoughfuses
of-fer
some
protection.

donotnecessarilyprotect
thespeaker
fiom alltypes
of
overload
andalsointroduce
audibledegradation
ofthe
signal.

Sinceit is
very
accurate,it will reveal
sources
ofdistortion
generated
elsewhercinthesystern.For
example.
distortion

recordings

electronicswill bereproduced

cableswill significantly
etfect

perfbrmance

Wall Mounting
The SCSis mountable,
eithervertically or horizontally, to flat surfaces
suchaswalls.Mounting screwsandrubber
bump-onsare
providedfor this type installation.Therearetwo openingson therearof thecabinet
for wall mounting.With
thecabinet positioned
vertically, thevertical mount openingisjust above
theinput panel.In this vertical position,the
horizontalmount openingis to thesideof theinput panel.
1)Positionthemounting screwon thewall 3 inches
abovewhereyou want thecenter
of thespeakerto be.This will be5
inchesbelow thetop of thespeakerif it is beingmounted
vertically, andll lqinchesif mounted
horizontally. Because
each
speakerweighsover23pounds,
it isnecessary
to secure
thescrewto awall stud,framing or otherstructure
thatcansafely
supportthis amountof weight. The2t

providedis intended
for normal walls with l
lz inchdry wall; if you have
different construction
you will need
alongerscrew.Install themounting screwso that3lqinchof thescrewremainsabovethe
mounting surface.
2) Removetherubberbump-onsfrom the sheetandplaceonebump-onnear
eachcorneron therearof thecabinet.The
bump-onswill keepthecabinetawayfrom themounting surfaceto prevent
unwanted
vibrationsor rattles.They alsoadd
spaceneededto run speakercables.
3) Connectthespeakercables
to theinput panelon therearof thespeaker
(see
connectioninsffuctions)beforemounting.
4) Locatetheproperopening(for horizontalor vertical) on therearof thecabinetandplace
thelargepart of theopening
overthescrewhead,
pushingthe speakeragainst
thewall until thebump-onsmakecontact
with thewall. (It is importantthat
theproper3
h inchof screwlengthremains
beyondthemounting surfaceto ensurea securemount.) Thenpull thespeaker
down until it is tight against
thewall.
5) Testthesecurityof themounting. It shouldnot bepossible
to movethespeaker
awayfrom thewall. If you can,the
speakershouldbepushed
down moreover themounting screw.
To removethespeakerfrom thewall it is importantthatthespeakerfirst belifted approximately1lz
inchbefore it is
pulled from thewall. If you pull thespeakervery hardwithout first lifting it, damagemay result.
Cabinet Finish Care
THIEL
wood cabinets
possess
ahigh quality lacquerfinish thatis both beautiful anddurable.However, anywood finish can
bedamagedby excessivemoisture,dryness,
or direct sunlight.When cleaning
your speakers,avoidusingoils, waxesor
polishes
thatcontainsilicone,suchasPledge
or Johnson's.We recommend
usingEndust.If you owna glossblack lacquer
speaker,
pleaserefer to theinstructionsincludedwith itsspecialcabinetcarekit.
The grilles canbecleanedof dustby usinganupholsteryattachment
of avacuumcleaner.
