SHOCK WARNING
The LDS5 operates from AC voltages, which are potentially harmful and could
cause serious injury. Turn the LDS5 power switch OFF and unplug the AC line
BEFORE attempting to perform any line voltage changes or connecting or
disconnecting any external equipment.

Ø11 mm CPS Laser Diode Mounting Kit Chapter 3: System Description
Rev B, June 1, 2018 Page 3
Chapter 3 System Description
The CPS11K(-EC) laser Kit is a complete CPS laser diode module mounting
system, consisting of the mounting hardware and a DC power supply. The
CPS11K(-EC) is designed for experimenters and system designers and includes
everything needed to start experimenting with Thorlabs CPS series laser diode
modules.
The laser diode modules are mounted in a Thorlabs KM100T mount, using the
included AD11F adapter, which provides convenient mounting and alignment of
the laser beam. Since the KM100T is a kinematic mount, beam stability is assured.
Included Mounting Hardware
Mount: KM100T Ø1" Kinematic Mount
Post: TR3 (-EC Version: TR75/M)
Post Holder: PH3 (-EC Version: PH75/M)
Base: BA2 ( /M Version: BA2/M)
Laser Adapters: AD11F
Hex Key: 1/16" (-EC Version: 1.5 mm) Hex Wrench
Power Supply
Power Supply LDS5 (-EC Version: LDS5-EC)
Warning
To change the line voltage on the power supply, locate the line select switch
below the power input connector. Select the appropriate line voltage by
adjusting the switch to either ‘115’ or ‘230’, depending on region.
Caution
The LDS5 Power Supply does not give access to change fuses.

Page 4 TTN107503-D01
Chapter 4 Setup and Operation
4.1. Setup
1. Unpack the contents of the kit.
2. Insert a Laser Module into the AD11F and tighten setscrews with a 1/16"
(1.5 mm) hex key (included) or ball driver.
Note: The knurled knob used for focus adjustment on the focus adjustable
laser modules is too large for the mounting adapter bore. This knob can be
unthreaded to mount the diode module in the same manner as the collimated
versions. Please make sure to loosen the setscrews locking the knob in place
using a 0.9 mm hex wrench before unthreading; not doing so can damage the
threading. Alternatively, the module can be mounted by sliding the phono plug
and cord through the adapter first.
3. Verify that the line voltage setting on the LDS5 Power Supply indicates
the correct operating AC voltage (115 VAC or 230 VAC). Refer to Section
5.1.1, page 5 if the voltage selection needs to be changed.
4. Plug the laser module power cable into the DC cable of the LDS5.
5. Attach the AC line cord to the LDS5 power supply and plug into an AC
outlet.
6. Turn on the power supply.
7. Follow laser safety precautions.
4.2. Operating and Handling Precautions
Before connecting the laser diode to the supply circuit, make sure that there are
no transients that could make the laser diode output exceed the maximum rating
for radiant flux or forward current. Current transients should be carefully avoided
since they may destroy the laser or substantially decrease the laser diode lifetime.
The following precautions should be taken to avoid failure of the device:
Workers and workbenches should be grounded to a common stable earth
at all times when working with laser diodes.
All equipment, including power supplies, soldering irons, etc. must be
grounded to a common stable earth.
Power supplies should be well regulated and free of transients.
Maximum soldering temperature is 250 °C for a maximum of 5 seconds.
Never connect or disconnect any components or external equipment,
such as voltmeters, to or from the device circuit while the power is on.
Mechanical clamping should take place along the cylinder without any
mechanical deformation of the housing (advised maximum force: 20 N).
Do not look into an operating laser diode through a microscope!

Ø11 mm CPS Laser Diode Mounting Kit Chapter 5: Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Rev B, June 1, 2018 Page 5
Chapter 5 Maintenance and Troubleshooting
5.1. Maintenance of the LDS5 Power Supply
5.1.1. Setting the LDS5 AC Line Voltage
The operating AC voltage is indicated by the value shown in the small gray window
located below the AC receptacle. The CPS11K systems are shipped with the
operating AC voltage set to 120 VAC, while the CPS11K-EC Metric versions are
shipped with the operating AC voltage set to 230 VAC. If this needs to be changed,
follow the instructions below:
1. Make sure the LDS5 is turned off, and remove the AC line cord.
2. Slide the voltage selector (located underneath the AC input receptacle)
to the appropriate line voltage (115V or 230V), using a small screwdriver.
3. Verify the correct voltage is shown through the window; if not, repeat the
above steps.
5.2. Troubleshooting
The CPS11K(-EC) is a robust system which should provide many hours of reliable
service. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the system. If there appears to
be a problem with the unit, please contact your local Thorlabs’ Technical Support
Office and a technician will be happy to assist you.

Ø11 mm CPS Laser Diode Mounting Kit Chapter 8: Regulatory
Page 8 TTN107503-D01
Chapter 8 Regulatory
As required by the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive)
of the European Community and the corresponding national laws, Thorlabs offers
all end users in the EC the possibility to return “end of life” units without incurring
disposal charges.
This offer is valid for Thorlabs electrical and electronic equipment:
Sold after August 13, 2005
Marked correspondingly with the crossed out
“wheelie bin” logo (see right)
Sold to a company or institute within the EC
Currently owned by a company or institute
within the EC
Still complete, not disassembled and not
contaminated
As the WEEE directive applies to self contained
operational electrical and electronic products, this end of
life take back service does not refer to other Thorlabs products, such as:
Pure OEM products, that means assemblies to be built into a unit by the
user (e.g. OEM laser driver cards)
Components
Mechanics and optics
Left over parts of units disassembled by the user (PCB’s, housings etc.).
If you wish to return a Thorlabs unit for waste recovery, please contact Thorlabs or
your nearest dealer for further information.
Waste Treatment is Your Own Responsibility
If you do not return an “end of life” unit to Thorlabs, you must hand it to a company
specialized in waste recovery. Do not dispose of the unit in a litter bin or at a public
waste disposal site.
Ecological Background
It is well known that WEEE pollutes the environment by releasing toxic products
during decomposition. The aim of the European RoHS directive is to reduce the
content of toxic substances in electronic products in the future.
The intent of the WEEE directive is to enforce the recycling of WEEE. A controlled
recycling of end of life products will thereby avoid negative impacts on the
environment.
