Solar Powered Chemical Injecon Pump
Installaon, Operaon, and Maintenance Instrucons
The model 4000 Chemical Injecon Pump is designed to inject low to medium volumes of chemical into high pressure lines. Depending on
the motor and plunger conguraon, these pumps are capable of pumping against up to 6000 PSI or up to 130 gallons/day. Due to the
varying nature of applicaons, proper sizing is essenal for each solar powered applicaon to ensure pump performance. Timberline
Manufacturing and it’s associated representaves are available to assist with any quesons or pump sizing. Variables you will need to know
to ensure proper sizing are:

These systems are typically sold including a pump unit, solar panels, solar panel mounng hardware and pipe, solar power voltage
regulator, pump controller, and baery/controller enclosure. Baeries are generally supplied by the end user aer a sizing
recommendaon by Timberline Manufacturing or their associated representaves, but are available upon request.

INSTALLATION
This product should only be installed by a qualied person familiar with its operaon and associated hazards. The Naonal
Electrical Code (NEC), local electrical and safety codes, and when applicable, the Occupaonal Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
should be observed to reduce hazards to personnel and property. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING.
MOUNTING DIMENSIONS
1. The pump unit should be mounted on a at and level surface. The chemical supply level must be at least 6”
above the sucon check valve at startup.
2. Verify that the arrow on the end of the pump body is poinng straight upward and sucon check valve is
facing downwards for 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” plunger bodies (Shown to the right).
For 3/16” plunger bodies, verify bleed screw is poinng directly upwards and sucon check valve is
facing downwards.
3. Install the pump unit onto a rm base through the use of 1/4” mounng hardware using the six holes
provided in the Baseplate. Mounng hole locaons are shown above.
4. Typical installaons include the following:
A rate gauge or drum gauge to accurately set the injecon rate
Isolaon valves on the sucon and discharge lines
Line check on the chemical discharge line (i.e., Timberline model 24SV-6 check valve)
A lter/strainer on the uid sucon line to prevent trash from embedding in the seat O-rings
5. Install sucon and discharge line tubing and ngs per manufacturer’s recommendaons. Timberline
recommends using 3/8” tubing minimum for sucon and discharge lines. Sucon/Discharge connecons 1/4”

LEAK HAZARD—PUMP MAY GENERATE PRESSURES IN EXCESS OF 10,000 PSI IN THE EVENT OF DEAD-HEAD OR
BLOCKAGE. A PRESSURE SAFETY VALVE SHOULD BE INSTALLED IN ALL APPLICATIONS ON THE PUMP DISCHARGE
LINE WITH RELIEF VALVE OUTLET PIPED BACK TO THE CHEMICAL SUPPLY TO PREVENT OVERPRESSURE OF
DOWNSTREAM EQUIPMENT.

OF SYSTEM FITNESS FOR PURPOSE OR USE IS SOLELY THE CUSTOMER’S RESPONSIBILITY.
Before installing any photovoltaic system, contact local authories to determine the necessary permits and installaon/
inspecon permits.
1. Inspect for any damage to the solar panel and/or mounng hardware before proceeding.
2. Locate the Solar Panel Mounng Pole (Item 4). Install and secure pipe stand for mounng the photovoltaic module(s).

THE MOUNTING METHOD USED TO SUPPORT THE MODULE AND BATTERY ENCLOSURE (IF A METAL ENCLOSURE
IS USED) SHOULD BE WIND RATED AND APPROVED TO THE LOCAL AND CIVIL CODES PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
3. Aach the horizontal support assembly (Item 2c) to the unistrut which is pre-
aached to the solar panel with the provided unistrut clamps as shown in the
illustraon to the right.
4. Mount the solar panel(s) and horizontal support assembly to the pipe stand
using the adjustment tee ng (image on next page).
5. Mount the baery enclosure onto the pipe stand with U-bolts provided in the
baery enclosure pole mounng kit (Item 7, metal enclosure only).
Cauon
NEVER EXPOSE THE MODULE TO ARTIFICIALLY CONCENTRATED SUNLIGHT.
UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS A PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE MAY EXPERIENCE CONDITIONS THAT PRODUCE
MORE CURRENT AND/OR VOLTAGE THAN REPORTED AT STANDARD TEST CONDITIONS. ACCORDINGLY, THE
VALUES OF ISC AND VOC MARKED ON UL LISTED MODULES SHOULD BE MULTIPLIED BY A FACTOR OF 1.25
WHEN DETERMINING THE COMPONENT VOLTAGE RATINGS, CONDUCTOR CAPACITIES, FUSE SIZES AND SIZE
OF CONTROLS CONNECTED TO THE MODULE OUTPUT. REFER TO SECTION 690-8 OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC
CODE FOR AN ADDITIONAL MULTIPLYING FACTOR OF 1.25 WHICH MAY BE APPLICABLE.
INSTALL CABLE WITH APPROPRIATE HARDWARE IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPLICABLE ELECTRICAL CODES.
GROUNDING IS ACHIEVED BY SECUREMENT TO THE ARRAY FRAME. THE ARRAY FRAME SHALL BE GROUNDED
IN ACCORDANCE WITH NEC ARITCLE 250.

SOLAR PANEL POSITIONING
The solar panel should be posioned to achieve maximum solar exposure. Proper adjustment of the mounng assembly is
crical to proper performance of the assembly.
1. Rotaon: Loosen the rotaon set screw on the adjustment tee (shown below) and posion the panel so that it is facing
true south (for northern hemisphere installaons) or true north (for southern hemisphere installaons), then re-ghten
the set screw. True south (or north) is dened as the posion halfway between sunrise and sunset. Determine the
halfway point between sunrise and sunset for a given day, and face the solar panel(s) in that direcon. True south varies
slightly from magnec south as shown on a compass.
2. Tilt: The opmum lt angle for the panel (measured from the horizontal) is determined by the site latude. See the table
below for recommendaons. Loosen the lt set screw on the adjustment tee and using either a smart phone app or
protractor and plumb-bob, adjust the lt angle of the panel unl the angle the panel makes with the horizontal matches
the recommended lt angle. Re-ghten the set screws.

Recommended Tilt Angles
These numbers are based on a xed angle to provide the most energy year round. Increasing the lt angle during winter
months may increase solar panel output, however leaving panels at a winter lt angle will signicantly reduce output during
summer months. Contact the manufacturer for more informaon.
Example: For a Houston, TX installaon (Latude 29.8°), lt angle is 27.3° (29.8° - 2.5° = 27.3°).

INSTALLATION
WIRING
1. Insert baeries into the baery/control enclosure and ensure that baeries are wired in parallel using the provided baery jumper
cables. An example of parallel wiring is shown below.
2. Locate the posive (red) and negave (black) baery wires which are pre wired into the controller and ASC. These wires are terminated
with #10 ring lugs for connecng the baeries.
3. Connect the baery wires to the baery ensuring that posive and negave terminals receive the corresponding wire color.
4. Cover the solar panel(s) as completely as possible, i.e., with a blanket or cardboard, to minimize power generaon while performing
wiring steps below.
5. Each solar panel should include 3. of aached wire with quick connect adapters pre-installed. Addionally, the baery/control
enclosure should include 12 . of aached wire with corresponding quick connect adapters.
6. Connect the solar panel cables by plugging in the aached MC4 connectors. The connectors should snap into place to prevent
accidental removal.
7. For dual panel systems, branch connectors are provided for wiring the panels in parallel. An example is shown below when wiring
mulple panels.
8. Run the pump motor wire through the supplied cord grip and into the control enclosure. The pump motor wire is terminated with
male/female bullets for easy connecon. Tighten the cord grip.

MAINTENANCE
PUMP
Lubricate sha and bearings with mul purpose grease. Alternavely, lubricate by lling the pump housing with hydraulic oil. Add or
replace lubricant quarterly, as a minimum. Use lubricant suitable for climate where the pump is installed.
Monitor plunger packing for leaks. Packing may need to be ghtened 24-72 hours aer installaon to account for the inial break-in
period. Replace packing if necessary.
Cauon OVER-TIGHTENING PACKING MAY CAUSE EXCESSIVE FRICTION ON PLUNGER RESULTING IN INCREASED POWER
CONSUMPTION AND DEGRADED SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
Monitor drivesha and pushrod bushings for wear. Replace if necessary.
SOLAR PANELS
Repeated deep discharge cycles may permanently damage the baeries. Proper sizing is essenal to ensure baery life. Replacement
may be necessary aer an extended period of me or repeated deep discharges.
BATTERIES
Periodically clean the solar panel to ensure opmum performance. Use a mild soap with warm water and a clean so towel to remove
dust, bird droppings, etc.
