•Alwayswearsubstantial,slip-resistantfootwear.Do
notoperatecuttingunitswhilewearingsandals,tennis
shoes,sneakers,orshorts.Also,donotwearloose-tting
clothingwhichcouldgetcaughtinmovingparts.Always
wearlongpants.Wearingsafetyglasses,safetyshoes,
andahelmetisadvisableandrequiredbysomelocal
ordinancesandinsuranceregulations.
•Removealldebrisorotherobjectsthatmightbepicked
upandthrownbythereelbladesofthecuttingunit.Keep
allbystandersawayfromtheworkingarea.
•Ifthecuttingbladesstrikeasolidobjectortheunit
vibratesabnormally,stopandshuttheengineoff.Check
thecuttingunitfordamagedparts.Repairanydamage
beforestartingandoperatingthecuttingunit.
•Lowerthecuttingunitstothegroundandremovethekey
fromtheignitionswitchwheneveryouleavethemachine
unattended.
•Besurethatthecuttingunitsareinsafeoperating
conditionbykeepingnuts,bolts,andscrewstight.
•Removethekeyfromtheswitchtopreventaccidental
startingoftheenginewhenservicing,adjusting,orstoring
themachine.
•Performonlythosemaintenanceinstructionsdescribedin
thismanual.Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorassistance
isdesired,contactanAuthorizedToroDistributor.

Afterthecuttingunitisremovedfromthebox,inspectthe
following:
1.Checkeachendofthereelforgrease.
Note:Greaseshouldbevisiblyevidentintheinternal
splinesofthereelshaft.
2.Ensurethatallnutsandboltsaresecurelytightened.
3.Makesurethatthesuspensionofthecarrierframe
operatesfreelyanddoesnotbindwhenmovedback
andforth.

Procedure
Wheneverthecuttingunithastobetippedtoexposethe
bedknife/reel,propuptherearofthecuttingunitwiththe
kickstand(suppliedwiththetractionunit)tomakesurethat
thenutsonthebackendofthebedbaradjustingscrewsare
notrestingontheworksurface(Figure3).

Procedure
Undermostconditions,youcanattainthebestdispersion
whentherearshieldisclosed(frontdischarge).When
conditionsareheavyorwet,youcanopentherearshield.
Toopentherearshield(Figure4),loosentheboltsecuring
theshieldtotheleftsideplate,rotatetheshieldtotheopen
position,andtightenthebolt.

roller,whichhelpsreducegrainandspongyturfbystanding
upthegrassbeforecutting.AscraperforthefrontWiehle
rollerisincludedinthekit.
FullFrontRoller:Producesamorepronouncedstriping
(repeatedcuttinginthesamedirection/path).Theeffective
heightofcutisraisedandthequalityofthecutisreduced.
GrassBasketKit:Aseriesofclippingcollectionbaskets
attachedtothefrontofthecuttingunitstocollectgrass
clippings.
GroomerKit:Rotatingbladesassembledbehindthefront
rollerwhichprovidethebestmethodforreducinggrainand
spongyturfbystandingupthegrassbeforecutting.The
groomeralsoknocksoffanydewfordecreasedstickiness
andclumping.Thiskitopensupthecanopyforbetter
grass-clippingintegration,andliftsgrassforaclean,crispcut.
Theoveralldesignimprovesthequalityofcutforhealthier
turfgrasswhileimprovingtheaftercutappearance.
HighHOCKit:Newfrontrollerbracketsandadditional
spacersfortherearrollerallowsthecuttingunittoachieve
heightsofcutabove2.5cm(1inch).Thenewfrontroller
bracketsalsomovesthefrontrolleroutfarthertoimprove
after-cutappearanceattheseheightsofcut.
LongRearRoller:Helpsreduceoverlapmarksand
mismatchbetweencuttingunitsforwarm-seasongrasses
(Bermuda,Zoysia,Paspalum).
RearLiftCylinderKit:Collarsassembledontherear
cutting-unitlift-armcylinderstolimittheheightofthecutting
units.Thisincreasestheareaforthereargrassbaskets.
RearRollerBrushKit:Ahigh-speed,high-contactbrush
thatkeepstherearrollerfreeofgrassanddebris,which
maintainsaconsistentheightofcutandpreventsclumping.
Thisleadstoabetterafter-cutappearance.
RollerRebuildKit:Includesallthebearings,bearingnuts,
innerseals,andoutersealsrequiredtorebuildaroller.
RollerRebuildToolKit:Includesallthetoolsand
installationinstructionsrequiredtorebuildarollerwiththe
rollerrebuildkit.
Scrapers(Wiehle,Shoulder,Rearroller,FullFront
Roller):Fixedscrapersforalloptionalrollersareavailable
forreducinggrassbuilduponrollerswhichcanaffect
height-of-cutsettings.
ShoulderRoller:Helpsreduceoverlapmarksfor

MakingAdjustments
AdjustingtheBedknifetotheReel
Usethisproceduretosetthebedknifetothereelandtocheck
theconditionofthereelandbedknifeandtheirinteraction.
Aftercompletingthisprocedure,alwaystestthecutting
unitperformanceunderyoureldconditions.Youmay
needtomakefurtheradjustmentstoobtainoptimalcutting
performance.
Important:Donotovertightenthebedknifetothereel
oryouwilldamageit.
•Afterbacklappingthecuttingunitorgrindingthereel,you
mayneedtomowwiththecuttingunitforafewminutes
andthenperformthisproceduretoadjustthebedknifeto
thereelasthereelandbedknifeadjusttoeachother.
•Youmayneedadditionaladjustmentsiftheturfis
extremelydenseoryourcuttingheightisverylow.
Youwillneedthefollowingtoolstocompletethisprocedure:
•Shim(0.002inch)
•Cuttingperformancepaper
1.Positionthecuttingunitonaat,levelworksurface.
2.Turnthebedbaradjustingscrewscounterclockwiseto
ensurethatthebedbardoesnotcontactthereel(Figure
8).

bedbaradjuster2clicksandremovetheshim.
Note:Adjusting1sideofthecuttingunitaffectsthe
otherside;the2clickswillprovideclearanceforwhen
theothersideisadjusted.
Note:Ifstartingwithalargegap,bothsidesshould
initiallybedrawncloserbyalternatelytighteningthe
rightandleftsides.
7.Slowlyrotatethereelsothatthesamebladethatyou
checkedontherightsideiscrossingthebedknife
approximately25mm(1inch)infromtheendofthe
bedknifeontheleftsideofthecuttingunit.
8.Turntheleftbedbaradjusterclockwiseuntiltheshim
canbeslidthroughthereeltobedknifegapwithlight
drag.
9.Returntotherightsideandadjustasnecessarytoget
lightdragontheshimbetweenthesamebladeand
bedknife.
10.Repeatsteps8and9untiltheshimcanbeslidthrough
bothgapswithslightdrag,butoneclickinonboth
sidespreventstheshimfrompassingthroughonboth
sides.
Note:Thebedknifeisnowparalleltothereel.
Note:Thisprocedureshouldnotbeneededondaily
adjustments,butshouldbedoneaftergrindingor
disassembly.

11.Fromthisposition(1clickinandshimnotpassing
through)turnthebedbaradjustersclockwise2clicks
each.
Note:Eachclickturnedmovesthebedknife0.018
mm(0.0007inch).Donotovertightentheadjusting
screws.
12.Testthecuttingperformancebyinsertingalongstripof
Torocuttingperformancepaperbetweenthereeland
thebedknife,perpendiculartothebedknife(Figure10).
Slowlyrotatethereelforward;itshouldcutthepaper.

Thebenchsetheightofcutistheheightatwhichthetop
edgeofthebedknifeissetaboveaatlevelsurfacethat
contactsthebottomofboththefrontandrearroller.
EffectiveHeight-of-Cut
Thisistheactualheightthatthegrasshasbeencut.Fora
givenbenchsetheight-of-cut,theactualheightofcutwill
varydependingonthetypeofgrass,timeofyear,turf,and
soilconditions.Thecuttingunitsetup(aggressivenessofcut,
rollers,bedknives,attachmentsinstalled,turfcompensation
settings,etc.)willalsoaffecttheeffectiveheightofcut.Check
theeffectiveheight-of-cutusingtheTurfEvaluator(Model
04399)regularlytodeterminethedesiredbenchsetheight
ofcut.
AggressivenessofCut
Aggressivenessofcuthasasignicantimpactonthe
performanceofthecuttingunit.Aggressivenessofcutrefers
totheangleofthebedkniferelativetotheground(Figure13).
Thebestcuttingunitsetupisdependentonyourturf
conditionsanddesiredresults.Experiencewiththecutting
unitonyourturfwilldeterminethebestsettingtouse.
Aggressivenessofcutmaybeadjustedthroughoutthecutting
seasontoallowforvariousturfconditions.
Ingeneral,lesstonormalaggressivesettingsaremore
appropriateforwarm-seasongrasses(Bermuda,paspalum,
zoysia)whilecool-seasongrasses(bent,bluegrass,rye)may
requirenormaltomoreaggressivesetups.Moreaggressive
setupscutmoregrassoffbyallowingthespinningreeltopull
moregrassupintothebedknife.

Thenumberofrearspacersdeterminestheaggressiveness
ofcutforthecuttingunit.Foragivenheightofcut,adding
spacersbelowtheside-platemountingangeincreasesthe
aggressivenessofthecuttingunit.Allcuttingunitsona
givenmachinemustbesettothesameaggressivenessofcut
(numberofrearspacers,PartNo.106-3925);otherwise,the
after-cutappearancecouldbenegativelyaffected(Figure13).
