A Compact Disc (CD) is a digital data medium which
requires a little care i ha dli g:
• The surface of a CD may o ly be
clea ed usi g a soft, dry cloth. Wipe
i straight li es from the ce tre
towards the edge.
• Never use petrol, pai t thi ers, disc
clea i g fluids or similar age ts.
• CDs must be ha dled with care to avoid major
damage to the surface. Severely scratched surfaces,
writi g o the discs, or sticki g labels o the discs
may result i a CD which ca o lo ger be read.
• CDs should ot be heated or be t. Choose a storage
site which fulfils these requireme ts.
DSP (Digital Sig al Processor)
The DVD 1230 R features a freely programmable sig al

sta dard modules.
DVD
DVD video exploits the latest state of
MPEG 2 data compressio tech ol-

The variable bit rate compressio of the DVD, with a
read speed of up to 9.8 Mbit per seco d, is capable of
recordi g eve the most complex images i their origi al
quality. The crystal-clear digital pictures have a
horizo tal resolutio of 720 pixels (poi ts) over more
tha 500 li es. This resolutio is twice as high as that of
the VHS system, is better tha that of LaserDisc, a d is
directly comparable to the resolutio of digital master
recordi gs made i recordi g studios.
DVDs are produced to meet either the PAL or NTSC
video orm. This multi- orm playback device is suitable
for reproduci g both types, a d plays them i the best
possible quality o your multi- orm TV set. Speech

Technical description
Oversampling
The audio data o CDs a d DVDs is stored at a
sampli g rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz - i.e. for each seco d of
music 44.100 or 48.000 sampled values are available for
each cha el. I the DVD 1230 R the audio data read
from the DVD or CD is „multiplied“ to a higher sampli g
rate (384 kHz) before it is co verted back i to a alogue
music sig als. This process delivers a very much better,
more fi ely graduated sig al to the co verter, which ca
the be co verted with correspo di gly higher precisio .
The raised sampli g rate is a calculati g process for
which there are ma y differe t mathematical methods. I
almost all digital audio devices which exploit the
adva tages of i creased digital sampli g rate a process
k ow as a FIR filter is employed for this purpose. At
we have bee carryi g out research for more tha
te years, aimed at improvi g the oversampli g process,
because the sta dard FIR method has o e drawback to
set agai st its i disputable adva tages: it adds small
pre- a d post-echoes to the music sig als. At we
have developed mathematical processes (k ow as
Bezier poly omial i terpolators) which do ot share this
disadva tage. For this reaso they should sou d better
a d more atural tha the usual sta dard process. Si ce
the calculati g procedure employed by us is co -
siderably more complex tha the sta dard method, the
DVD 1230 R features a high-performa ce digital sig al
processor (DSP) which carries out the over-sampli g
process with imme se precisio (56 bit) usi g special
algorithms developed by .
The freely programmable DSP which we use is capable
of carryi g out the oversampli g process usi g a y
method of calculatio . For this reaso we have im-
pleme ted two slightly modified Bezier processes
(filters 2 a d 4) i the DVD 1230 R i additio to the pure
Bezier process (filter 3), together with two varia ts of the
sta dard process („sta dard“ filter a d filter 1). For more
i formatio o the five differe t processes please refer to
the ext sectio . You ca switch betwee the differe t
algorithms usi g the FILTER butto , a d decide for your-
self which of the filters you prefer.
Standard FIR filter
The lo g FIR filter is the sta dard oversampli g process
i digital tech ology, offeri g extremely li ear freque cy
respo se, very high dampi g, li ear phase charac-
teristics a d co sta t group delays. The disadva tage is
the pre- a d post-echoes which are added to the sig al.
These „time ra ge errors“ te d to affect the music
sig al’s dy amics, precisio a d atural ess, a d
reduce spatial orie tatio .
Frequency response and transient characteristics of
the long FIR filter
Filter 1 (short FIR filter)
Shorte i g the filter (lower coefficie t) reduces the time
ra ge errors, albeit combi ed with a slight loss of
li earity i the freque cy ra ge a d dampi g per-
forma ce.
Frequency response and transient characteristics of
the short FIR filter
Filter 2 (Bezier i terpolator plus IIR filter)
I this process a ideal Bezier i terpolator is combi ed
with what is k ow as a IIR filter. This elimi ates the
problematic pre-echo of the FIR method. This process
produces highly „a alogue“ system characteristics, with
a sou d quality a d measured performa ce similar to
those of good a alogue disc players.
