4. Set the LEVEL switch to position 3. This setting should be
acceptable for most telephones. (See Figure 4)
5. If you are using an older type 2500 telephone that has a
carbon microphone, set the LEVEL switch to position 4.
6. Set the VOICE/MODEM switch to VOICE position.
Do not use speakerphone mode if your telephone has this
feature.
1. Pick up the telephone handset and listen for dial tone.
2. The telephone handset must be left off hook for the length of
the data/fax transmission. Hanging up the handset will
terminate your call.
3. As soon as dial tone is heard, set the VOICE/MODEM switch
to MODEM position. This will disable the telephone handset.
4. Use your computer to initiate the modem dialing string. Ex-
cessive delay in completing steps 3 and 4 may result in loss
of dial tone.
5. If there is difficulty with the making or maintaining the modem
connection, set the LEVEL to position 2and repeat steps 1
through 4 listed above.
6. If there is still difficulty, try setting the LEVEL to position 1
and repeat steps 1 through 4 listed above.
∗The MPA-100A does not permit the reception of incoming
data or fax calls.
You can connect your computer’s modem to any telephone
having a modular handset jack.
1. Plug your data/fax modem telephone line cord into the MPA-
100A MODEM jack. (See Figure 3)
2. Remove the handset cord from the telephone handset jack
and plug into the MPA-100A HANDSET jack.

Unpack the unit and check to make sure you have all the items
that come with your MPA-100A.
1. MPA-100A unit.
2. Mono-audio cord with a 1/8inch plug at each end.
3. 120VAC to 18VDC power adapter.
During modem operation, the MPA-100A requires using either
the supplied 18VDC power adapter or two 9 volt batteries. The
power adapter can be used with or without the batteries in-
stalled.
1. If you are installing batteries, remove the battery compart-
ment cover located on the bottom of the unit. (See Figure 2)
2. Press against the latch and lift the cover upwards.
3. Follow the battery installation instructions located inside the
battery compartment.
4. Install two 1604A or equivalent 9 volt alkaline type batteries.
Use fresh batteries to assure optimum battery life.
5. Observe correct battery polarity when installing the batteries.
6. Press the BATTERY TEST button. The BATTERY TEST in-
dicator will light confirming the batteries are installed
correctly. (See Figure 1)
7. If the BATTERY TEST indicator does not light, either the
batteries are installed incorrectly, or at least one battery is
discharged.
Battery Installation
8. The MPA-100A draws power from the batteries only when
you are actually using the modem on line. Depending on the
modem, battery life should exceed 30 hours.
9. Re-install the battery cover.

7. As the batteries become depleted, it may become necessary
to set the LEVEL switch to the next higher position.
8. When you are finished, hang up the handset. Set the VOICE/
MODEM switch to the VOICE position for normal telephone
operation.
Some digital telephones may not support auto dialing from your
modem. If this is the case, you will have to dial the number
using the telephone keypad. Use the following procedure to dial
data/fax calls manually.
1. If your data modem communications program is set to wait
for dial tone before dialing, the ATDT dialing command must
be changed to AT X3 DT. This will instruct your modem to
dial without waiting for dial tone. Check your modem and
communications program instruction manuals for further
information on this subject.
2. The above change to the modem dialing command line
(initialization string) allows you to dial your call using the
telephone keypad. After completing dialing, you must press
the enter key on your computer keyboard to allow the
modem to go off hook.
3. If your modem looks for dial tone, and your data communi-
cations software does not allow you to modify this para-
meter, you can still dial the telephone number manually. Let
the modem dial the number as it would normally. When the
modem finishes dialing, use the telephone keypad to dial the
number.
Telephone conversations may be recorded by connecting a
tape recorder (not supplied) to the MPA-100A.
1. When recording from the telephone, the AC power adapter
or batteries are not required.
2. Telephone conversations can only be recorded from the
telephone that you are using.
3. The tape recorder must have an 1/8inch diameter external
microphone input jack.
4. Plug one end of the supplied mono-audio cord into the MPA-
100A REC jack. (See Figures 4, 5, and 6)
Figure 4
Mono-Audio Cord
5. Plug the remaining end the mono-audio cord into the tape
recorder MIC jack.
6. To start recording, press the tape recorder RECORD button.
To stop recording, press the tape recorder STOP button.
7. If you are using a voice operated cassette tape recorder, set
it to Voice Activated record mode.
8. When you pick up the telephone handset, the tape recorder
will start automatically and will stop shortly after you hang up.

Additional Information
Your MPA-100A has been designed to give years of trouble free
service. To assure its longevity, please read the following instruct-
ions.

wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that
can corrode electronic circuits.

damage to circuitry, or the plastic case, which may result in
causing it to malfunction.
4. Do not use any type of chemical or any abrasive powder to
clean the cabinet. Use only mild detergents on a soft, damp
cloth.
5. In the case of trouble with the MPA-100, do not attempt to repair
it yourself. It is the responsibility of users requiring service to
report the need for service to our Service Department. They will
