The Turfco 86511 Riding Aerator Drop Seeder Attachment is for Turfco XT8 Riding Aerator
product number 85399.
Intended Use
86511 Drop Seeder Attachment
The Turfco 86511 Riding Aerator Drop Seeder Attachment ts all XT8 Riding Aerators.
Seeder is a drop spreader with gate controls up by the console. An electric motor turns an
agitator inside the hopper. Effective width of drop seeder is 30” wide, same as aeration width.
Hopper capacity is 2.5 cubic feet.
DO NOT ALTER the TURFCO XT8 Riding Aerator or the 86511 Riding Aerator Drop Seeder
Attachment in any manner other than specied to install the kit. Unauthorized alterations
may affect operation, performance, and may result in injury or death to the operator as well as
other individuals in the work area. Unauthorized alterations will void the warranty.
DO NOT USE the drop seeder attachment to spread anything other than seed. This includes
fertilizer, salt, etc. Spreading anything other than seed voids the warranty of BOTH the
seeder attachment and the XT8 Riding Aerator.

Safety on the job should always be a top priority. Training and experience are important factors in the safe operation
of tools and equipment. Be trained and familiar with the tools used to install the Auxiliary Control Kit. Work in a clean
dry work area. If using electrically powered equipment, check for proper grounding.

Installing Drop Seeder Attachment to an XT8 Riding Aerator
(See Figures 1 thru 9)
Step 1. Turn the engine ignition key to OFF. Disconnect both battery cables.
Step 2. (See Figure 2) Install hopper mount into receiver hitch
***REQUIRES TWO PEOPLE TO LIFT SEEDER
A. Slide hopper mount into receiver hitch
B. Install hitch pin to secure mount to aerator

Step 3. (See Figure 3) Tighten mounting latch
A. Turn latch rod to tighten latch to aerator frame
B. Verify that all the play in the receiver hitch has been removed after tightening latch
rod
Step 4. (See Figure 4) Remove two console carriage bolts
A. Remove and discard two console carriage bolts (7/16” socket)

Step 5. (See Figure 5) Install control mounting spacers
A. Install two ¼-20 X 2.5 bolts and spacers where carriage bolts were removed
B. Bolts go from the inside out (7/16” socket and wrench)
Step 6. (See Figure 6) Install controls to console
A. Attach controls mount to the two bolts and spacers
B. Install and tighten two wingnuts

Step 7. (See Figure 7) Install double spade connector to hour meter
A. Remove red wire from aerator harness from + terminal on hour meter
B. Install female portion of double spade connector to hour meter + terminal
C. Connect red wire from aerator harness on to one of the male spades on the double
spade connector

Step 8. (See Figure 8) Install battery harness
A. Attach ring terminals to battery. Red wire to +, black wire to -
B. Connect pink wire to double spade connector on hourmeter
C. Connect three pin connector to main wiring harness
Step 9. Test seeder
A. Reattach battery cables
B. Turn key to ON position
C. Move gate lever to ON, hopper gate should open, electric motor should turn
on to turn the agitator inside the hopper

Removing Seeder Attachment from Aerator
Before removing seeder attachment from aerator, turn ignition key to OFF position.
A. Unplug battery harness from controller
B. Remove wingnuts from controls mounting bracket, take off controls
C. Loosen mounting latch rod
D. Remove hitch pin and pull entire hopper assembly out of aerator receiver.
Clean seeder thoroughly for off season storage. Store seeder indoors and out of the elements.
Seeder Setup Before Operation
Calibrate for Gate Setting
Step 1. Determine operation speed
A. Measure off 88 feet
B. Drive aerator in same manner as you will be spreading seed
a. If spreading before/after aerating, drive with tines out of ground
b. If spreading while aerating, drive with tines in ground at aerating depth
C. Record the amount of time in seconds it takes to go the 88 feet
D. Take 60 divided by recorded time, this is your speed in miles per hour
(for example 12 seconds to travel 88 feet is 5 mph)

Step 2. Set rate dial setting
A. See Seed Application Chart on Page 9 for a starting point
Step 3. Remove lid and put under seeder to catch seed. Put enough seed in hopper for test
Step 4. With key in ON position, open seed gate lever for 1 minute then close (agitator should
be turning in hopper)
Step 5. Weigh the amount of seed caught in lid
Step 6. Calculate rate in lbs of seed per 1000 square feet
Rate = lbs caught in 1 min ÷ (mph X 0.22) = ___________________
Step 7. Compare Rate calculated above with the recommended application rate for the seed
on the seed bag. Adjust rate dial setting and re-calibrate until it matches recommended appli-
cation rate

Seeder Operation
A. Drop seeder has same effective width as the aerator.
B. Seed will start to drop as soon as the gate lever is pushed to open. Note the seed
will fall at the front of the aerator, whereas the aerator tines are at the rear of
the aerator, so plan accordingly when deciding when to open and close the gate
lever.
C. The electric motor turning the agitator inside the hopper will automatically turn on
and off with the gate lever open and close.
D. Drop seeder applies a constant amount, so if operator slows down the forward
speed a heavier application of seed will occur.

Calibration Instructions
1. Determine operation speed
- Measure 88 ft, drive aerator with tines in the ground at aerating depth
- Record time in seconds to travel 88 ft.
MPH = 60 ÷ recorded time in seconds
2. Based on chart above as a starting point, set rate dial to desired setting
3. Remove lid and put under seeder to catch seed
4. With key on, open seed gate lever for 1 minute then close (agitator in hopper should be turning)
5. Weigh amount of seed caught in lid
6. Calculate rate in lbs. of seed per 1000 square feet using the following equation:
Rate = lbs. caught in 1 minute ÷ MPH measured ÷ 0.22
7. Adjust rate dial setting if needed and re-calibrate until desired rate is achieved
*The above chart is for reference only, always calibrate to your specific
blend of seed to get an accurate application.

Rate Dial Setting (see Figure 9) To adjust application rate:
A. Gate lever in closed position
B. Loosen wingnut
C. Rotate dial (larger number larger opening)
D. Tighten wingnut

Motor Chain Tension Adjustment (see Figure 10) If agitator chain is loose/slipping:
A. Remove chain cover, 4 bolts (7/16” socket)
B. Loosen 4 nuts (1/2” socket)
C. Pull up on motor and tighten 4 nuts
D. Reinstall chain cover Figure 10

Gate Cleaning (see Figure 11) If gate is sticking open:
A. Empty hopper of seed
B. Loosen eyebolt to take all the tension off the spring (1/2” wrenches)
C. Remove 8 bolts and take off gate (5/16” socket)
D. Clean off top of gate and bottom of hopper
E. Reinstall gate and re-tension spring eyebolt
