Technician Notes
Warning
Only authorized technicians should attempt to repair this equipment. All trouble shooting and repair
procedures allow only module replacement. Because of the complexity of the individual boards and sub-
assemblies, no one should attempt to make repairs at the component level or make modifications to any
printed wiring board. Improper repairs can create a safety hazard.
To reduce the risk of personal injury from electric shock and hazardous energy levels, do not exceed the
level of repairs specified in these procedures.
Caution
The system is designed to be electrically grounded. To ensure proper operation, plug the AC power cord
into a properly grounded AC outlet only.
Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage static sensitive devices or micro circuitry. Proper packaging
and grounding techniques are required to prevent damage.
•Transport products in static safe containers such as conductive tubes, bags or boxes.
•Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at a static free work area.
•Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface as well as properly grounded tools and
equipment.
•Keep the area free of nonconductive materials such as ordinary plastic assembly aids and foam
packing.
•Ensure proper grounding before touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.
•Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
•Always place drives with printed circuit board (PCB) assembly-side down.

Rack Warnings
If you plan to rack mount the iSCSI RAID Storage, Fibre RAID Storage or the Expansion RAID Storage
System, please follow the rack manufacturer’s safety instructions. Install the enclosure only in a rack that
has been properly secured in an area with suitable environmental conditions.
Caution
Have someone assist you during physical installation.
Caution
To properly ventilate the system, you must provide at least 7.6 cm of clearance at the front and back of
the server.
Warning
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment, always ensure that the rack is adequately
stabilized prior to extending a component outside the rack. A rack may become unstable if more than one
component is extended. Extend only one at a time.
System Warnings
Warning
To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the hot-plug disk modules and other system
modules to cool before touching them.

Warning
To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment:
•Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature.
•Ensure the power cord is inserted into a grounded electrical outlet that is easily accessible at all
times.
•Unplug the power cord from the power supply module to shut off power to the equipment.
Caution
Protect the storage system from power fluctuations and temporary power interruptions with a regulating
uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This device protects the hardware from damage caused by power
surges and voltage spikes and keeps the system operational during a power failure.
Caution
The storage system must always be operated with all hot plug modules installed or slot covers in place to
ensure proper cooling.

1.0 Overview
1.1 Features
The second generation American Dynamics® iSCSI and Fibre RAID Storage
solutions are designed for high-performance recording devices. They are secure
and highly scalable storage solutions that provide SAN storage for virtually any
network and application.
The new Rack Mount models are available in a variety of configurations and
capacities. There are iSCSI RAID, 4Gb Fibre RAID, and Expansion models
which have been uniquely designed to utilize the same 3U chassis. These
storage solutions come standard with redundant power supplies and fans, and
nearly every component is hot-swappable, including sixteen lockable hot-swap
drives. Optional battery backup module is also available for the iSCSI and Fibre
RAID units.
American Dynamics® iSCSI and Fibre RAID Storage Solution can be configured
to numerous RAID level. These systems are the most cost-effective disk array
system with completely integrated high-performance and data-protection
capabilities which meet or exceed the highest industry standards.

RAID concepts
RAID is the abbreviation of Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The basic
idea of RAID is to combine multiple drives together to form one large logical
drive. This RAID drive obtains performance, capacity and reliability than a single
drive. The operating system detects the RAID drive as a single storage device.
1.2.1 RAID levels
There are different RAID levels with different degree of data protection, data
availability, and performance to host environment. The description of RAID
levels are on the following:
RAID 0 Disk striping. RAID 0 needs at least one hard drive.
RAID 1 Disk mirroring over two disks. RAID 1 needs at least two
hard drives.
N-way mirror Extension to RAID 1 level. It has N copies of the disk.
RAID 3 Striping with parity on the dedicated disk. RAID 3 needs at
least three hard drives.
RAID 5 Striping with interspersed parity over the member disks.
RAID 3 needs at least three hard drives.
RAID 6 2-dimensional parity protection over the member disks.
RAID 6 needs at least four hard drives.
RAID 0+1 Mirroring of the member RAID 0 volumes. RAID 0+1 needs
at least four hard drives.
RAID 10 Striping over the member RAID 1 volumes. RAID 10 needs
at least four hard drives.
RAID 30 Striping over the member RAID 3 volumes. RAID 30 needs
at least six hard drives.
RAID 50 Striping over the member RAID 5 volumes. RAID 50 needs
at least six hard drives.
RAID 60 Striping over the member RAID 6 volumes. RAID 60 needs
at least eight hard drives.
JBOD The abbreviation of “Just a Bunch Of Disks”. JBOD needs
at least one hard drive.
1.2.2 Volume relationship
The below graphic is the volume structure which is designed for the iSCSI
and Fibre RAID Storage Systems. It describes the relationship of RAID
components. One RG (RAID Group) consists of a set of VDs (Virtual Disks)
and owns one RAID level attribute. Each RG can be divided into several VDs.
The VDs in one RG share the same RAID level, but may have different
volume capacity. All VDs share the CV (Cache Volume) to execute the data
