1Overview
LaunchPad Interface is the way to go for those who want to accelerate the development of
Power Electronics applications for Texas Instrument family of DSPs.
Typhoon HIL emulates power stage of a PE device that includes power converters, electrical
machinery, filters, electrical grid, PV cells, passive elements, etc. with 1μs overall time
resolution.
In this way users can develop and immediately test their control applications without
worrying about safety measures required in the power laboratory environment.

3.1 Analog signal connector
This is a 96 pin DIN 41612/IEC receptacle connector that is directly pluggable into analog
connector of the Typhoon HIL emulators, followed by three rows of measurement terminals.
Table 1 shows how 20 analog signals (16 analog outputs and 4 analog inputs) from Typhoon
HIL emulator are connected to LaunchPad headers (LAUNCHXL-F28379D analog stage).
HIL Analog Outputs have a series 120Ω RZ1-RZ16 resistors that, together with protection
diodes (U2-U5), form a 0-3.3V referenced clamping circuit thus protecting the DSP ADC
stage from signal overvoltage and undervoltage.

* Depending on the position of RDACA or RDACB jumper resistors, HIL AO or HIL AI is
connected to the DSP analog pin. Defaults are HIL AO connected to DSP ADC. RDACA and
RDACB default positions are shown in Figure 3.2.

3.2 Digital signal connector
This is a 96 pin DIN 41612/IEC receptacle connector that is directly pluggable into digital
connector of the Typhoon HIL emulators, followed by three rows of measurement terminals.
Table 2 shows how 32 digital signals (16 outputs and 16 inputs) from Typhoon HIL emulator
are routed to the LaunchPad headers (LAUNCHXL-F28379D digital stage).
16 HIL digital outputs are level shifted from HIL’s 5V to DSP’s 3.3V over U1,
SN74LVCH16T245 level shifter. Level shifter outputs can be enabled/disabled by resistor
jumpers ROE1 (lower 8 outputs) and ROE2 (upper 8 outputs). All outputs are enabled by
default as shown in Figure 3.3.

3.3 LaunchPad headers
LaunchPad headers are a set of four 2x10 pin headers for TI LaunchPad boards, followed by
a set of four 2x10 pin measurement terminals. Some of the TI LaunchPad boards from
C2000 and Hercules series supported by LaunchPad Interface are:
LAUNCHXL-F28027F
LAUNCHXL-F28069M
LAUNCHXL-F28379D
LAUNCHXL2-TMS57012
LAUNCHXL2-RM46
LaunchPad Interface board is primarily designed for LAUNCHXL-F28379D while other
LaunchPad boards are supported as well, but it is advised to check the pinout first because
not all pins are available on all boards or they have different capabilities. Texas Instruments
LAUNCHXL-F28379D is shown in Figure 3.4.

3.4 Power supply
LaunchPad boards are powered from USB by default. With the LaunchPad Interface they can
be powered from HIL instead.
Proceed with caution. Study the schematic of the used LaunchPad board carefully before
making any changes. Before powering from HIL, disconnect and/or disable all USB power
supplies present on the LaunchPad board itself, regardless of the USB cable connection.
HIL 5V and 3.3V can be supplied to LaunchPad board by populating JH5V and JH3V3
jumpers. By default these jumpers are not populated. Some LaunchPad boards might
require both 5V and 3.3V power supplies while others might require only one of these power
supplies. LaunchPad HIL power supply jumpers are shown in Figure 3.5.
Figure 3.5 –LaunchPad HIL power supply jumpers
Green LEDs marked LP 5V and LP 3V3 are indicating 5V and 3.3V power supply on the
LaunchPad board, sourced from USB or HIL.
HIL digital output level shifter U1 is powered from LaunchPad board 5V and 3.3V, not HIL
5V and 3.3V.
