About Caller Identification (Caller ID)
This product has a Caller ID with Call Waiting feature that works with service from your
local phone service provider.
Caller ID with Call Waiting lets you see who’s calling before you answer the phone, even
when you’re on another call.
You may need to change your phone service to use this feature. Contact your phone
service provider if:
• You have both Caller ID and Call Waiting, but as separate services (you may need
combined service)
• You have only Caller ID service, or only Call Waiting service
• You don’t subscribe to any Caller ID or Call Waiting services.
You can use this product with regular Caller ID service, and you can use this product’s
other features without subscribing to either Caller ID or combined Caller ID with Call Waiting
service.
There are fees for Caller ID services, and they may not be available in all areas.
This product can provide information only if both you and the caller are in areas offering
Caller ID service, and if both telephone companies use compatible equipment.

Before You Begin

Connecting Power to Base Unit
Choose a location for the Base
near an electrical outlet and a
telephone jack.
This phone requires a modular

Charge the Battery Pack
The Handset should be charged initially for 12 hours. Afterwards, a maintenance charge
of at least 10 hours is sufficient. Maximum talk time on a full charge is approximately 5
hours. Maximum standby time is 5 days. Look for the charging bull animation on the
Handset as it charges.

Setup
Check for Dial Tone
After the batteries are charged, connect the modular telephone cord between a live
phonejackandthejacklocatedonthebottomoftheBaseUnit. PickuptheHandsetand
pressPHONE. You shouldhear adial tone.
Tone/Pulse Selection
Your gz 2434 is preset fortone dialing. See“Telephone Operation”for details.

Removable Face Plate and Base Plate
Yourgz 2434 comeswith additional Handsetand Base Plates ofvarious colors. Youcan
interchangethese platesto suit yourpersonal tastesand roomdecor.
Handset Face Plate
Carefullyremove theHandset faceplate by prying up from the notch at thebottom ofthe
plate. Re-attach bysnapping theupper portionoftheplateintopositionfirst,then snapping
thelowerportion into position.
BasePlate
Carefully remove the Base plate by prying up from the notches located at the bottom
front and back edge of the plate. Align the new Base plate, making sure the antenna
passes through the appropriate slot. Secure the plate by snapping it into position.

Handset Ringer Style/Battery Save
You can select from four traditional Handset ringer styles, six popular pre-programmed
melodies,sevenuserprogrammablemelodies,orturntheringeroffandextendthebatterylife.
1Makesure theHandset isoff.
2PressPROG to enter programmingmode.
3Press until the screen displays RINGER: and the current setting.
4Press SELECT.Thecurrentsetting blinks,and youwillhear a sample of the ring.
5Press or toselect thedesired option .Youwill hear asampleof each ring.
6Press SELECT to choose the displayed ringer setting. Then the Handset will

Set Date and Time
You can edit the dateand the timebychoosing the“DATE/TIME”mode.
1. Make sure the Handset is off.
2. Press PROG to enter programming mode.
3. Press until the screen displays DATE/TIME.
4. Press SELECT. The current month blinks.
5. Use or to adjust the month, then press SELECT.
6. Repeat step 5to adjust the day, hour, minute and AM or PM.
7. You’ll hear a long beep to confirm your settings.
NOTE: You can choose to set the time manually, or you can allow it to be set automatically
with incoming Caller ID information.
Set the Dial Mode (Preset to TONE)
Ifyouhavetouchtone service, the phoneisreadytouse as soon asthebatteryischarged.
Ifyou havedial pulse(rotary) service, you’ll need to change the dial mode.

is Voice Messaging systems, providing alerts on both the Handset and Base Unit when

Whena caller leavesamessage in your voicemailbox, theMESSAGE light on the Base

Aftercallingyourvoicemailservice and listening toallnewmessages,the indicators will be
turnedoff withina fewseconds after you complete your call.
Youcanretrieveyour voicemail messages fromanytelephone. Ifthe indicators remain on
afterall newmessages have been reviewed, youcan turnthem offmanually:

dialing during a call by pressing */Tone .This is useful if you need to send touch tone
signals for access to telephone banking or long-distance services.

Operating Range
This cordless telephone operates within the maximum power allowed by the Federal
CommunicationsCommission (FCC). Evenso, this Handsetand Base cancommunicate
overonlya certain distance—which can varywiththe locations oftheBase and Handset,
theweather, and theconstruction ofyour home oroffice. Forbest performance, keepthe
Baseantennafully upright.
If you receive a call while you are out of range, the Handset might not ring — or if it
does ring,the call mightnot connect whenyou press PHONE . Movecloser to the Base,
then press PHONE toanswer the call.
If you move out of range during a phone conversation, you might hear noise or
interference. Toimprove reception,move closerto the Base.
If you move out of range without pressing OFF, your phone will be left “off the hook.”

long. Entries are stored alphabetically. For consistency with Caller ID entries, you may

Caller ID Operation
About Call History
This phone assigns each incoming call a number from 1 to 90. The most recent call will
havethehighest number. Whenthememory is full,theoldest call informationisdeleted to
makeroomfor new incomingcallinformation.
Foreachcall that comesin,the screen displaysthefollowing information betweenthefirst
andsecond rings:
• Yourcaller’s name(15 lettersare sent by your telephone company).
• Thecaller’s area codeand telephone number.
• Thetime and dateof thecall.
• The repeat Tag ( *) in the upper right corner, indicating the party has called more
than once.
Note: When repeat Caller ID (CID) data arrives, the time and date information will
overwrite the old information, and is displayed during CID review.
Note:Press OFF at any time to exit call history.
Review Call History
Thescreen displayscall informationfor about 15 seconds after it has been received.
1 Press (CID) to view call history.
2 Use or to scroll through records in call history.
Delete Records from Call History
Delete a Specific Call
1 Locate the record you want to delete from call history.

you’restoring with the number. Use tobackspace andmakecorrections; use
toadvance andadd aspace.
4. PressSELECTtomovetothenext row. Use tobackspace and makecorrections
onthenumber.
5. PressSELECT toconfirm, then followthe steps 7 – 11in “Store a Number /Name
in the Directory”, onpages 10 and 11.

2. Press SELECT. The screen displays <Take Off>, or the name of the
first composed melody, if you’ve already composed a tune in this location.
3. Use and to scroll to other melody locations. The first 5 Composer
slots have examples of self-programmed melodies. The remaining 2 slots
are empty. You can replace the first five slots with your own, self-composed
melodies.
4. Once you’ve chosen a location, press SELECT.
5. Use the keypad to compose your own creation. The maximum number of
notes (including rests) is 99.

You can adjust the characteristics of the ‘note’ you’ve just selected by entering the following
digits: 8Shortens the duration of the note (or rest).
9Lengthens the note.
0Inserts a rest (pause) of the same duration of the previous note.
*Sets the octave for new notes.
#Makes the note a sharp.
Deletes the last note or rest you entered.
For example, ‘ Happy Birthday ’ would be composed by pressing the sequence:

6. Press SELECT after you have finished composing your tune. Your choices
are now OPT (Option), PLAY,SAV (save), and DEL (Delete).
7. Using and , choose one of the 4 selections.
Choosing OPT (Option) allows you adjust the Tempo and the Instrument used to play your
tune. Tempo ranges from slowest (80) to fastest (225), with the default setting at 140.
Using or , select a tempo, then press SELECT.
Choosing INSTRUMENT, you have a choice of the following:

Choose the PLAY option to hear approximately 1 minute of your composition. Press OFF

composition. Using the keypad, give your composition a name. You can use a maximum
of 8 characters.
Delete a ComposedTune
1 Withthe HandsetOff, pressPROG.
2 Using or , scroll until the screen displays COMPOSER.
3 Press SELECT, then use or to select the desired MELODY: .
4 Press SELECT. Thescreen willdisplayLOADING...followed by thefinal
‘note’ sequences of your composition. The number at the bottom of the
screen represents the difference between the total number of notes and
rests,and 99(the maximumfor anycomposed tune).
5 Press SELECT. Using or , scroll until DEL is flashing.
6 PressSELECT. You’ll hearaconfirmation beep. The composedtunehas
been deleted, withthe name beingreplaced by {EMPTY _ }. Youcan
now compose anew tune inthe empty location.
You can also convert a favorite tune from any MIDI file into code
for entering on the gz 2434 , using the www.vtechphones.com
website. See the enclosed insert for details.
Ringer Options

Your gz 2434 Handset is equipped with a 2.5mm Headset Jack for use with an
optional accessory Headset for hands-free operation. If you choose to use the
Headsetoption,youmustobtainanoptionalaccessoryHeadset,whichiscompatible
with the gz 2434.
To purchase a Headset, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511.
Once you have a compatible 2.5mm Headset, locate the Headset Jack on the gz 2434
Handset. Connect the plug on the Headset cord to the jack (under a small rubber
flag) on the cordless Handset. The plug should fit securely. Do not force the
connection.
NOTE :
Whenever a compatible Headset is
connectedtothecordlessHandset,the
microphone on the Handset will be
muted. This is done to limit the effect
of background noise.
Belt Clip
The gz 2434 is also equipped with a
detachablebeltclip.Alignthepinsonthe
insideedge of theclip withthe notches
on the sides of the Handset. The belt
clipshouldsnapsecurelyintoplace.Do
not force the connection.

If the phone doesn’t work at all, check these items first:
• Makesure the AC adapter isplugged intoan outlet notcontrolled bya wall switch.
• Makesurethetelephonelinecordispluggedfirmlyintothebase unit and the modular
jack.
• Makesure the Base antenna isfully upright.
• If the Handset does not beep when you press PHONE, the battery might need
charging.
• Makesure the battery pack is installed correctly.
• Ifyouhave dial pulse(rotary) service onyourphone line, makesurethe dialmodeis
setto dial pulse(see TelephoneOperation).
• Microwave appliances may cause interference with this phone. If you experience
interference,move away from the microwave
If the above suggestions don’t solve the problem, try re-initializing the Handset
and Base:
1Disconnectthe powerto the Base.
2Removethe Handsetbattery pack.
3Waitafew minutes.
4Connectthe power to the Base.
5Insertthe Handsetbattery pack.
6Putthe Handset inthe Base tore-initialize.
If you hear a two-beep signal when you try to use the handset:
• Youmight beout ofrange. Move closer to the Base and try again.
• If moving closer to the Base doesn’t help, try following the directions above for
re-initializingtheHandset and Base.
If the phone does not ring when you receive a call:
• Makesure theHandset ringeris on.
• Makesurethetelephonelinecord is connectedfirmlytotheBaseandthetelephonejack.
• MakesuretheACadapterispluggedfirmlyintoanoutletnotcontrolledbyawallswitch.
• Youmight betoo farfrom the Base; move closer.
• You might have too many extension phones on your telephone line to allow all
of themto ring.Tryunplugging someof them.
If you hear noise or interference when using the phone:
• Makesure the Base antenna isfully upright.
• Youmay beout ofrange. Move closer to the Base.
• Pressandrelease CHAN tochange to anotherofthe 30channelsavailable. If noise
isexceptionally loud, movecloser tothe Base beforechanging channels.
• Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the Base can sometimes
causeinterference.Try moving theappliance orthe Base to another outlet.
• Usingthe Handset nearhousehold appliances (microwaves,computers, television,
stereos,etc.) can sometimescause interference. Moveaway from applianceswhile
usingthe Handset.

If you hear other calls while using your phone:
• Press CHAN to changeto anotherchannel.

hearothercalls,the problem is probablyinyourwiring or local service.Callyourlocal

If you lose a call after changing channels:
Youwereprobablyalmostoutofrange.MoveclosertotheBasebeforechangingchannels.
Beforeplacing anothercall, setthe Handset in the Base for at least 15seconds.
Ifyouareunable to operate special telephone services or other equipmentrequiring
touch tone signals:
If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, follow the directions under “Temporary Tone
Dialing”inthe TELEPHONE OPERATIONsectionof this manual.
Ifthe MESSAGElight on the basedoes not go off evenafter you’ve listened tovoice

1 Press PROG.
2 Press until the screen displays MESSAGES WAITING .
3 Press SELECT. The screen displays LIGHT OFF?YES .
4 PressSELECT again to turnoff the MESSAGE lighton Base.
