2.Device description
This chapter will describe the device. The device is pointed out with features present in §2.4.
Classifications of the device are listed in §2.7.
2.1. INTENDED USE AND USERS
The device is intended to be used for the cooling of X-ray and E-beam tubes in industrial applications.
The device is intended to be used in stationary applications in a fixed position and industrial environment
like:
- Non-destructive testing applications
- Laboratory and research environments
- Therapeutic x-ray equipment for radiotherapy treatments or sterilization packaging material by
irradiation
- Industrial machine cooling
The limitations of use are specified in §9.
The intended user of the device is defined as the operator of an X-ray or E-beam system. The operator
shall be qualified and/or trained to operate the X-ray or E-beam system.
2.2. Description of the device
The THERMICA WATER TO AIR COOLER is operated by the generator and consists of a minimum flow
switch, level switch and a temperature controller which will generate a monitoring signal to the generator
once the minimum system requirements are not met.
In addition, the device can be configurated with an Air filter.
The device provides 2 MOP:
- between the electronics and the outside of the housing
- between the electronics and the operator controls
- between motor and fan and other components and encasing
The device is suitable for installation in stationary X-ray systems.
For configuration and usage see §5 and §6.

2.3. Principle of operation
The Water to Air cooler transports the heated water/glycol fluid from the X-ray or E-beam tube to the heat
exchanger from the cooler. The liquid flow transport is generated by the pump integrated in the cooler.
The minimum flow needed to cool the X-ray or E-beam tube is monitored by the flow switch. The fluid
transported from the tube to the cooler will heat up the heat exchanger which is cooled by convection to
air. The air flow needed for the convection is provided by a temperature-controlled fan.

2.6. Restriction on use
The device is intended for indoor use only.
The cooler is suitable for CONTINUOUS OPERATION. The DUTY CYCLE is defined as 100%.
The cooling capacity is dependent on the ambient air temperature, installed altitude and possible
blockage of the air entrance filter due to air pollution.
The volume flow which the pump can displace is dependent on the pressure drop which is generated in
the X-ray tube, connections, and hoses. The specifications and limitations are listed in §9.
