The chassis iscapableofworking inbothPALandSECAM. Thesound system iscapable of giving6watts
RMS outputintoa loadof 8ohms.
One 8 pagesimpleTELETEXT, TOPTEXT andFASTEXT isprovided.
The chassisisequippedwith 21-pinscart connectorswhich canaccept viascarttheSVHSformatfromVCRs soequipped.
2.SMALL SIGNAL PART WITH TDA884X
The TDA8840/8842/8844 combine allsmallsignalfunctions required for a colourTV receiver, except tuning.
2.1.Vision IFamplifier
The IF-amplifiercontains 3 AC-coupled control stages with a totalgaincontrol rangewhich ishigherthan 66dB.
The sensitivity of the circuitiscomparable with thatof modemIF-IC's. Thevideo signalisdemodulatedbymeansofa PLL
carrier regenerator. Thiscircuitcontains a frequency detector anda phase detector. TheAFC outputisobtainedbyusingthe
VCO control voltage ofthe PLL andcanbe readvia the PC-bus.Forfast search tuning systemsthewindow of
the AFC can beincreased with a factor 3.Thesettingisrealisedwith the AFW bit.
Depending on the typethe AGC-detector operates ontop-sync level(singlestandardversions) orontop syncand top
white-level
(multistandard versions).
The
demodulation

is
switched
via
the
rc-bus.
The AGC detector

isconnected externally.Thismainlybecause oftheflexibilityofthe application.Thetime-constantof the AGC system duringpositive

modulationisratherlongtoavoidvisiblevariationsofthesignalamplitude,lo improvemespeed01meAUUsystem a circuithas
beenincludedwhichdetects whether the AGC detector isactivated every frame period.Whenduring3 frame periodsnoactionis
detected the speed of the system isincreased.Forsignalswithoutpeakwhite informationthesystem switches automaticallyto a
gated black level AGC. Becausea blacklevelclamppulseisrequired(orthiswayofoperationthecircuitwillonlyswitchto blacklevel
AGC inthe internal mode.
The circuits contain a videoidentificationcircuitwhichisindependentofthesynchronisationcircuit. Therefore searchtuningis
possiblewhen thedisplaysection of the receiver isused asa monitor.Theidentoutputissuppliedto the tuningsystem via
the PC-bus. The video identcircuitcanbemadelesssensitivebymeansofthe STMbit.Thismodecanbeusedduringsearchtuning
to avoid that the tuning system willstop atvery weak inputsignals.
2.2.Video Switches
Thecircuits havetwo CVBS inputs(internalandexternalCVBS) andY/C input.When theY/C inputisnotrequiredtheY inputcanbe
used asthird CVBS input. The selection ofthevarioussources ismadeviathePC-bus.ThecircuithasoneCVBS output.
2.3.SoundCircuit
The sound band passandtrapfilters have to beconnected externally.Thefiltered intercarriersignalisfed to a limitercircuit
andisdemodulated bymeans ofa PLLdemodulator.ThisPLLcircuittunesitselfautomatically to theincomingcarrier signal
so that noadjustmentisrequired.
Thevolume iscontrolled via the PC-bus. Thedeemphasiscapacitor hasto beconnected externally.Thenon-controlled audio
signal can beobtainedfromthispin. The FMdemodulator can bemutedvia the PC-bus.Thisfunction canbeusedto switch-off
thesound duringa channel changeso that highoutput peaksareprevented. The TDA8840/8842containanautomaticvolume
levelling(AVL) circuit which automaticallystabilisestheaudiooutputsignalto a certain levelwhich canbeset bythe viewer bymeans
of the volume control. Thisfunction prevents bigaudiooutputfluctuations dueto variationsofthe modulationdepthof the transmitter.
The AVL function can beactivated viathePC-bus.
2.4.Synchronisation circuit
Thesync seperator ispreceded bya controlledamplifierwhichadjuststhe syncpulseamplitudeto a fixedlevel.Thesepulsesarefed
to the slicing stage which isoperating at50% ofthe amplitude. The separated syncpulsesare fed to the first phasedetector andto the
coincidence detector. Thiscoincidence detector isused to detect whether the lineoscillatorissynchronisedandcanalsobeusedfor
transmitter identification. The first PLL has a very highstaticalsteepnessso thatthe phaseofthe pictureisindependentofthe line
frequency.
The horizontal outputsignalisgenerated bymeansofanoscillatorwhich isrunningattwicethelinefrequency.Itsfrequencyisdivided
by2 to lockthe first control loop to the incomingsignal.Thetime-constant ofthe loopcanbeforced bythe PC-bus(fast orslow).
Ifrequired the 1Ccan select the time-constant dependingonthe noisecontent oftheincomingvideo signal.
Toprotect the horizontal outputtransistor, thehorizontaldriveisimmediately switched off when a power-on-reset isdetected.
The drive signalisswitched-on againwhen the normalswitch-on procedure isfollowed.
Viathe PC-bus, adjustments can bemadeofthehorizontalandverticalgeometry. The vertical sawtooth generator drives the
vertical output drive circuit which has a differential outputcurrent. FortheEWdrivea single ended currentoutputisavailable.
When the horizontal scanisreduced to display4 : 3 picturesona 16: 9 picturetubeanaccuratevideoblankingcan beswitchedon
to obtain well defined edges onthe screen.
Overvoltage conditionscan bedetected viatheEHTtrackingpin.WhenanovervoKageconditionisdetectedthehorizontaloutput
drive signalwillbeswitched-off viathe slow stop procedure butitisalsopossiblethatthe driveisnot switched-off andthatjust a
protection indicationisgiveninthePC-busoutputbyte.ThechoiceismadeviatheinputbitPRO.
2.5.Chroma and Luminance processing
The circuits contain a chroma bandpass andtrapcircuit.Thefilters arerealisedbymeansofgyratorcircuitsandtheyare
automatically calibratedby comparing the tuningfrequency withtheX-tal frequency ofthe decoder.
The luminancedelay lineand the delay forthe peaking circuitare alsorealisedbymeansof gyrator circuits.
Thecentre frequency of the chroma bandpassfilterisswitchableviathePC-bussothattheperformance canbeoptimisedfor
"front-end" signalsandexternal CVBS signals.
DuringSECAM reception thecentrefrequencyofthechromatrapisreducedtogeta bettersuppressionoftheSECAM
carrier frequencies.
2.6.Colour Decoder
Thedecoder contains analignment-free X-tal oscillator,a killercircuitandtwo colourdifferencedemodulators.The90°phaseshiftfor
the reference signalismadeinternally.
The1Ccontains anautomatic colour limiting(ACL) circuitwhichprevents thatoversaturationoccurswhen signalswith a high
chroma-to-burst ratio are received. TheACL circuitisdesigned suchthatitonly reducesthe chromasignalandnottheburstsignal.
Thishas the advantage that the colour sensitivity isnotaffected by thisfunction.
Thebase-band delay lineisintegratedinthe PAL/SECAM 1C's.
Thedemodulated colour difference signals are internallysuppliedtothedelayline.Thematrixedsignalsareexternallyavailable.
Thecolour difference matrix switches automatically between
PAL/SECAM andNTSC,however,itisalsopossibleto fixthe matrixinthePALstandard.
Which colour standardthe1Ccan decodedepends ontheexternal X-tals. TheX-tal to beconnectedto pin34musthavea frequency
of3.5MHz(NTSC-M, PAL-M orPAL-N) andpin35 canhandleX-tals witha frequency of 4.4and3.5MHz. Topreventcalibration
problemsofthe horizontaloscillator the externalswitchingbetweenthe 2 X-tals shouldbecarriedoutwhen theoscillator isforced to
pin35.Fora reliablecalibration of the horizontal oscillatoritisvery importantthatthe X-tal indicationbits(XA andXB) arenot
corrupted. For this reason the X-tal bitscanberead intheoutputbytessothatthesoftware canchecktheW-bustransmission.
2.7.RGB output circuit andblack-current stabilisation
Thecolour-difference signalsare matrixedwith theluminance signalto obtaintheRGB-signals.TheTDA884Xdevicehasonelinear
RGB input.ThisRGB signalcanbecontrolledoncontrast andbrightness.
The outputsignalhasanamplitudeofabout2 volts black-to-whiteatnominalinputsignalsandnominalsettingsofthecontrols.
Toincrease the flexibility ofthe1Citispossibleto insertOSD and/orteletext signalsdirectlyatthe RGB outputs.
This insertionmode iscontrolled viathe insertioninput(pin26intheS-DIP56- andpin38 intheQFP-64level).Thisblankingaction
atthe RGB outputs hassome delay whichmustbecompansated externally.
Toobtain anaccurate biasingofthe picturetubea "ContinuousCathodeCalibration"circuithasbeendeveloped.
Thisfunction isrealised bymeansofa 2-pointblacklevelstabilisationcircuit.
When the TV receiver isswitched-on, the RGB outputsignalsareblankedandtheblack currentloopwilltry to set the rightpicture
tubebiaslevels.ViatheAST bita choicecanbemadebetweenautomaticstart-upora start-upviathem-processor.

Itispossibleto havethe sameinputconnected to several outputs.
5.AMDEMODULATORTDA9830
TheTDA9830 isdesignedfor AM-sound demodulationusedinL andL"standard.

SoundIFInput:
The soundIFamplifierconsists ofthreeAC-coupled differentialamplifierstages eachwithapproximately20dBgain.
At the output ofeach stageisa multiplierfor gaincontrolling. The overallcontrolrangeisapproximately-6to +60dBandthe
frequency response(-3dB)oftheIFamplifierisapproximately6 to 70MHz.Thesteepnessofgaincontrol isapproximately10mV/dB.
IFAGC:
The automaticgaincontrolvoltageto maintaintheAM demodulatoroutputsignalataconstantlevelisgeneratedbya mean
leveldetector.The AGC-detector charges anddischargesthe capacitoratpin3 controlledbythe outputsignalofthe
AM-demodulator compared to aninternalreference voltage.Themaximumcharge/dischargecurrentisapproximately 5 mA.
AM-demodulator
The IFamplifier outputsignalisfed to a limitingamplifier(twostages)andto a multipliercircuit.
However the limiteroutputsignal(whichisnotanymore AM modulated)isalsofed to the multiplier, which providesAM
demodulation(inphase demodulation).After lowpassfiltering(fg@ 400kHz)for carrierrejectionandbuffering,
the demodulator outputsignalispresent atpin6.
Audio Switch
This circuit isanoperationalamplifierwith three inputstagesandinternalfeedbacknetworkdetermininggain(OdB)and
frequency response (fg @ 700kHz).Two oftheinputstagesare connected to pin7 andpin9,the thirdinputstageto an
internalreference voltage.Controlledbythe switchingpins10and12,oneofthethreeinputstages canbeactivatedanda
choice madebetween two different AFsignalsormutestate. The selected signalispresent atpin8.Thedecouplingcapacitors
atthe inputpinsareneeded, because the internallygeneratedbiasvoltagefor theinputstages mustnotbeinfluenced
bytheapplicationinorderto avoidOC-plopincaseofswitching.
ReferenceCircuit:
This circurt-isa bandgapstabiliserincombinationwitha voltage regulationamplifier, whichprovidesaninternalreference voltage
ofabout 3.6V nearly independent from supplyvoltage andtemperature. Thisreference voltageisfiltered bythe capacitorat
pin4 inorder to reducenoise. Itisused asa reference to generateallimportantvoltages andcurrentsof the circuit.
Forapplication in12Vpower supply concepts, there isaninternalvoltage dividerincombinationwitha Darlingtontransistorin
order to reduce the supplyvoltage for all1Cfunctionblockstoapproximately6V.
6.DIGITAL TV SOUND PROCESSOR TDA9875
The TDA9875 isa single-chipDigitalTV SoundProcessor.
Supported standards are M,B/G,D/K,I andL.
Description ofthe demodulator and decoder section:
SIFInput:
Two inputpins are provided, SIF1 e.g.forterrestrial TV andSIF2e.g.for a satellitetuner.Theselected signalispassedthrough an
AGC circuitandthendigitizedbyan8-bitADC operatingat24.576MHz.
AGC:
The gainofthe AGC amplifieriscontrolledfrom the ADC outputbymeansofa digitalcontrolloopemployinghysteresis.
The AGC has a fast attack behaviour to prevent ADC overloadsand slowdecaybehaviourAGC oscillations.
For AM demodulationAGC mustbeswitched off.
Mixer
The digitized inputsignal isfedto the mixers, which mixoneorbothinputsoundcarriersdownto zeroIF.A 24-bitcontrolword for
eachcarrier sets the required frequency.
FMand AM Demodulation
An FMorAM inputsignal isfed viaa band-limitingfilterto a demodulatorthatcanbeusedfor eitherFMorAM demodulation.
Apart fromthe standard (fixed) de-emphasis characteristic, anadaptivede-emphasisisavailableforencodedsatelliteprograms.
Astereo decoder recovers theleftandrightsignalchannels from the demodulatedsoundcarriers.
FMIdentification:
The identification oftheFMsound modeisperformed byAM synchronousdemodulationofthepilotsignalandnarrow-banddetection
of the identification frequencies. The resultisavailableviathe TC-businterface.
NICAM Demodulation:
The NICAM signal istransmitted ina DQPSK code ata bitrateof 728 kbit/s.The NICAMdemodulatorperforms DQPSK
demodulationandfeeds the resultingbitstream andclocksignalontotheNICAM decoderand, for evaluationpurposes,to PCLK
(pin1)and NICAM (pin2).
NICAMDecoder:
The device performs alldecodingfunctionsinaccordancewiththe"EBUNICAM728specification".After lockingto theframe
alignmentword, the data isdescrambledbyapplying thedefinedpseudo-randombinarysequence;the device willthensynchronise
to the periodicframe flagbitCO.
Thestatus of the NICAM decoder can bereadoutfrom the NICAM statusregister bytheuser.TheOSB bitindicatesthatthe
decoder haslocked to the NICAM data. The VDSP bitindicates thatthe decoderhaslockedtotheNICAMdataandthatthe

The internalflash diodesprotectthe amplifiers againstflashover inthepicturetube.
Theonly protections requiredatthe cathode outputsarea flash resistorand a sparkgap.
TheTDA6107Qhas aninternalthermalprotection circuitwhich givesa decreaseoftheslew rateathightemperatures.
Furthermore,the deviceneedsonlyone powersupplyvoltage(Vdd).
Incontrastto previous types ofDMOSvideoamplifiers, allthe external resistors(Rf, RiandRa) areintegrated, sothe gainisfixed
andsaves 9 resistors.
Furthermore,thereference voltage isintegrated,itsaves a resistordivideranda decouplingcapacitor.So,thereplacement
valueofthe TDA6107Q isvery high.
The TDA6107Qisprovidedwith a blackcurrent datapin.SinceTDA884X isusedasdrivedevice,noadjustmentsarerequired

TheY/CVBS inputisfirst clampedand thenfed to the delay-lineandcombfiltersection viaa lowpasspre-filter
Thisfiltercan bebypassed viathe external LPF-on pin.Thispinisinternallypulledup,to putthefilterdefault on.The Y/CVBs
inputisalsofed tothe sync seperator, where horizontalandvertical reference pulses are made.
Bypassmodecan beforced viaBYP (pin3).FSC (pin1)isthesubcarrierinputwhichisconnected to thecolour decoder.
InputFSCSW pinindicates iffsc or2*fsc isused.
The Sys1,2pins(20,23)indicatewhich system standard isprocessed.Sys2isinternallypulledup,Sys1 isinternallypulleddown.
Therefore when the Sys1,2inputsare left open, automatically PAL 4.43MHzisforced.
