1.0 InTroduCTIon
The VICAM Vertu
™
lateral flow reader is designed to analyze VICAM lateral flow strip tests.
The optical detector moves along the strip test, records data and converts the data to a toxin
concentration through a lot-specific calibration curve.

3.0 runnIng a TesT
2.0 EQUIPMENT SET-UP
2.2 Connections
Power, barcode scanner and printer (if available).
1. Attach the power cord to the reader and plug in the power cord.
2. Do not use the charger if you have put ordinary batteries in the reader.
It is designed to use only NiMH batteries!
3. Attach the barcode scanner to the reader at either of the IO ports.
4. If available, attach the printer to the reader at either of the IO ports.
2.0 equIpmenT seT-up
3.0 RUNNING A TEST
3.1 Power on the Reader
To power on the Vertu reader, press the center enter key (~1 second). The reader will start
by performing self-checks. Once self checks are complete, the “Scan Test” screen will appear.
3.2 Measure
The cursor will automatically select “Measure”. If the barcode scanner is connected, it will
be activated by beeping 3 times.
3.3 Scan (Verify Test/Lot #)
If the displayed test/lot number does not match the one you are testing, scan the barcode
supplied in your kit.
Hold barcode scanner, press the yellow button and aim the laser beam point to the barcode
of the test you are running. The scanner will beep once after the test/lot information is taken
in, the information about lot and matrix on display will be changed.
3.4 Develop the Test
Follow the instructions for developing the type of V-test (Afla-V, DON-V etc.) you are running.
If instructions specify developing the test inside the reader, proceed to step 3.5; otherwise,
develop the test on the bench, insert as in step 3.5 and read as in step 3.6.
3.5 Insert the Test Strip
Open the drawer on the right hand side of the reader. Place a strip test into the drawer with
the sample well to the left (see diagram on page 5). Push the drawer back into the reader
and wait for the specified development time* (use a timer).
*Each VICAM test method has a specified development time. Please refer to the instruction manual to confirm
the appropriate wait time.
3.6 Read Results
After the test development time is complete, press the center enter key and the test result
will be displayed on the screen in 3-4 seconds.
3.7 Proceed to Next Test
To run another sample, move the cursor to the “NT” and press the center enter key. If you are
running the same lot and the same sample type, simply press the center enter key for measure-

ment after the cassette has developed for the specified development time (refer to the instruction
manual to confirm the appropriate wait time) and has been placed in the drawer.
3.8 Switch Test/Lot #
To switch to a different test kit lot number, different toxin test kit (for example Afla-V rather
than DON-V) or different sample (for example corn rather than peanuts), scan the new barcode
as listed in step 3.3.
4.0 POWER OFF THE READER
To power off the Vertu reader, press and hold the center enter key until you hear it beep 3
times. The reader will then shut down. The default setting for shut down time is 60 minutes.
5.0. OTHER FEATURES
5.1 Main menu
To access the main menu of the Vertu reader, move the cursor to the “X” by using the arrows
on keypad, then press the center enter key. The main menu consists of: SCAN, MEMORY,
INFO, and SETUP.
5.2 SCAN
If selected, pressing the center enter key will open the “Scan Test” page.
5.3 MEMORY
If selected, pressing the center enter key will open the “Results” page. There are two pages for
results, press the down arrow key to scroll to the next page. The first page shows how many results
are stored, how many tests are run, and the date/time of the test. The second page displays the test
type, lot # and the result.
When “Result No.” is selected, press the left or right arrow key to scroll forward and backward
through the stored tests.
To print result, move the cursor to ‘P’ and press the center enter key. To delete a result, move
the cursor to ‘D’ and press the center enter key. To delete ALL results, go to page 3 of the
setup menu, select ‘delete all results’, and press the center enter key. Move the cursor to
‘yes’ and press the center enter key again.
5.4 INFO
If selected, pressing the center enter key will open the “Info page”. On this page, the VICAM
address and main phone number are listed.
5.5 SETUP
If selected, pressing the center enter key will open the “Setup” page.
There are 3 pages for setup, press the right arrow key to go to the next page. The first page
displays the date, time, time format and shutdown time. The second page shows the backlight,
ext. reader and keyboard signal. The third page displays the check calibration, add dummy
method, delete current method, and delete all results; the first 3 functions on this page are
designed to be used only by the manufacturer.
The default settings are: North America format; the reader will shut down after 60 minutes if left
idle; the backlight and the keyboard signal are on all the time when the reader power is on.
To change the time format or time, simply move the cursor and press the center enter key.
Press the up arrow for an increase and press the down arrow for a decrease.
6.0 CHARGING THE BATTERY
To charge the batteries, the reader must be turned on.
* Batteries are nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. DO NOT use anything other than (NiMH) batteries.
