INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
MODEL V896MSH WEATHERPROOF MAXIMUM SECURITY HOUSING
1. INTRODUCTION
The information in this instruction manual covers the instal-
lation, operation, and maintenance of model V896MSH
Weatherproof Maximum Security Housing.
This unit should be installed only by a qualified techni-
cian using approved materials and wiring practices in
accordance with national, state, and local electrical
codes. Failure to comply with these instructions may
result in personal injury and/or damage to the equip-
ment. Read these instructions through completely before
attempting installation.
The V896MSH housing provides a tamper-resistant means
of concealing a video camera on either a ceiling, wall, or
pole and is intended for use in high-risk areas where
surveillance equipment is vulnerable to physical damage
or criminal violence. The housing is designed for small
solid-state cameras with fixed-focal-length lenses.
The housing is constructed entirely of welded lo-gauge
steel and is protected by cast-iron-gray vinyl paint. It is
virtually impenetrable and completely closed and sealed
against moisture. A thermostatically-controlled heater and
defogger option (Model
V896MSH-H)
is available for
outdoor applications. The camera window is 3/8-inch-
thick (0.95 cm) Lexan
*.
A hinged bottom section (the
cover) is provided with a specially-keyed double-acting
lock for an uncomplicated but secure locking system.
The housing may be mounted directly to a solid ceiling,
or it may be mounted to a wall or pole using the V896MA
Mounting Adapter. The housing is designed with an
axially adjustable camera platform so that the camera
can be adjusted easily and the lens focused from below
the ceiling.
Provision is made for routing electrical connections,
including AC power lines and video cables, into the
housing. There are two holes in the top of the housing
for this purpose. Since the cables pass directly into the
ceiling or mounting adapter, they are not exposed at any
point to vandalism.
This product complies with European Community EMC
Directive
89/336.
The product was subjected to the
testing outlined in European Normalization Standard
EN 5008 l-l (Electromagnetic Compatibility
-
General
Emissions Standard Part 1: Residential, Commercial,
and Light Industry), and EN 50082-l (Electromagnetic

FASTENER NOTE:
In the following instructions,
where the manual indicates l/4-20 (UNC-standard)
bolts, screws, and nuts, metric M6 x 1.0 hardware
may be used. Where the manual indicates l/4-inch
lag bolts or other l/4-inch fasteners that must be
supplied by the installer, M6 equivalent fasteners
may be used. Wherever equipment must be mounted
to built-in threaded studs in the housing or wherever
the housing or its accessories have prethreaded
holes, the studs and holes will be threaded and tapped

weight and resist unauthorized attempts to dis-
lodge it.
If the housing is being mounted on the ceiling near a
wall, leave an appropriate amount of clear area imme-
diately behind the hinge end of the unit so that the
housing may be opened fully without striking the wall.
The base of the housing has two cable access holes and
four screw holes for ceiling mounting. A dimensional
drawing is provided (Figure 2) to assist in locating the
mounting and cable holes

Mounting Dimensions
1.
Use the housing as a template or use the dimensional
drawing (Figure 2) as a guide. Carefully mark the
position of the mounting screws by pressing a sharp
instrument or pen or pencil point to leave marks on
the ceiling.
2.
Draw circles on the ceiling where the cable access
holes are to be made. The cable access holes in the
ceiling may be slightly larger than the holes in the
housing, if desired.
WARNING: Whatever means are used to attach the
A
housing to the ceiling, it must be done very se-
curely. The housing and camera assembly weigh
about 30 lb (14 kg). Failure to fasten the housing
to the ceiling properly could result in the housing
falling and causing severe injury to someone
beneath it. Also, inadequate attachment may
make the housing vulnerable to vandalism.
3.
Attach the housing to the ceiling as follows:
a.
If the ceiling is concrete, drill appropriate-sized
holes in the ceiling with a masonry drill, and use
l/4-inch (min.) diameter lag bolts with concrete
anchors.
b.
If the ceiling is wood, use l/4-20 (min.) bolts,
nuts, flat washers, and lock washers.
c. If the housing is to be attached to wooden
beams, use l/4-inch (min.) lag bolts no shorter
than 2.5 inches (6.4 cm).
d.
If the housing is to be attached to steel beams
or steel plate, use 5/16-18 bolts, nuts, and lock
washers.
4.
Align the large rectangular rubber gasket with the
holes in the top of the housing and fasten the hous-
ing to the ceiling with the connectors indicated in
Step 3. Tighten the fasteners securely enough to
assure that moisture cannot get into the housing
through the mounting screw holes or the cable ac-
cess holes.

2.2 Power Connection
It is most convenient to complete the wiring of the
V896MSH-H Heater/Defogger option at this time, since
there is more room to work without the camera in place.
Cable connections to the camera are completed after its
installation. Refer to Instruction Manual X485 for in-
stallation instructions for the V896MSH-H Heater/De-
fogger option.
The camera requires a 24-VAC input line. The input
power to the camera must correspond to the TV scanning
system of the camera: EIA or EIA-NTSC cameras re-
quire 60 Hz. CCIR or CCIR-PAL require 50 Hz.
2.3 Installation of the Camera and Lens
The camera mount is attached to the fixed base of the
housing and consists of two components. One compo-
nent is pivoted to the housing and has two arms that
extend downward. The second component is a square-
U-shaped piece to which the camera is attached. Both
components share a generous range of adjustments to
allow precise positioning of the camera within the hous-
ing.
4.
5.
6.
Assemble and adjust the camera and lens as de-
scribed in the camera and lens manuals.
Fasten the camera securely to the square-U-shaped
camera bracket with a l/4-20 x 5/16-inch screw or
bolt.
8.
Close the cover again and check the monitor image.
If the camera is now correctly positioned, open the
cover and tighten the three (3) fasteners on the
camera mount assembly. If the position is not cor-
rect, repeat steps 6 through 8 until it is.
Connect the 24-VAC camera input power wires to
the 24-VAC power input connector on the back of
the camera. Connect a coaxial cable terminated with
a BNC connector to the VIDEO connector on the
camera. Connect the other end of the coaxial cable
to a monitor.
Position the camera at approximately the correct
angles and firm up, but do not tighten completely,
the camera mount assembly, screws, and nuts.
NOTE:
If
the camera has been moved as close to
the window as possible and an excessive amount of
the window border or the inside of the housing is still
visible, it may be necessary to install a lens with a
narrower angle of view on the camera. (A narrower
angle of view is indicated by a larger focal length
number. For instance, a lens with a &mm focal
length has a narrower angle of view than a 4.5mm
lens, and the 4.5-mm lens has a narrower angle of
view than a 3.6mm lens.)
Energize the camera by switching on the camera
input power. Energize the monitor. The camera can
now generate a video output.
9. Check all hardware for tightness, then close and
lock the cover.
Close the housing cover and check the image on the

whether the border of the housing window can be
seen on the monitor, and note what small adjust-
ments in up-down tilt or in horizontal swing may be
needed.
7.
Open the cover of the housing and allow it to hang
down on its hinges. Move the camera as determined
in Step 6 of this section. If the window border can
be seen on the monitor, move the camera forward.
3. MAINTENANCE
The V896MSH housing requires no maintenance other
than occasional cleaning of the Lexan window. The
window should be cleaned using a soft cloth and plain
soap and water. Do not use abrasive cleaners, which will
scratch the window surface. Do not use any solvent-type
cleaners. Never wipe the window when it is dry.
