Maintenance
Inspections during heating season
ATTENTION OWNER:
You have purchased a heating boiler of top quality –
Congratulations!
In order to ensure that the boiler continues to operate at its
peak performance, safety and efficiency, observe and follow
the recommendations for maintenance, inspection and service
routine. Early detection of problems and their immediate repair
will usually result in less damage, lower repair cost and
continued safe operation.
Frequently:
– Check pressure gage for correct system (water) pressure.
Check for water on the floor from the discharge pipe of
the pressure relief valve or any other pipe, pipe joint,
valve or air vent.
– Check for moisture, water, or appearance of rust on the
flue gas pipes, their joints as well as vent dampers, or
side well vent terminals (if so equipped). Check for debris
which could obstruct the flow of flue gases.
– Ensure that nothing is obstructing the flow of combustion
and ventilation air and no chemicals, garbage, gasoline,
combustible materials, flammable vapors and liquids are
stored (not even temporarily) in the vicinity of the boiler.
A service/inspection of the boiler and the system is
recommended once a year. Maintenance, service and
cleaning is specified in the Installation/Service Manual.
Before heating season starts, both the boiler and burner
should be serviced by a qualified service agency. Service
contracts may be established through gas suppliers or other
licensed contractors in your area.
All ECD boilers are equipped with two manual reset safety
switches to provide safety shut-off means in the case of
1) flame roll-out caused by a completely blocked flueway or
plugged heat exchanger and
2) complete blockage of the vent or chimney caused by
debris, animals, or accidental coverage of the chimney rain
cap by building materials, ice, or other material.
The blocked vent switch is located in the draft hood assembly
at the front of the boiler. The flame roll-out switch is located
near the igniter close to the burner at the front of the unit.
In the event that either the flame roll-out or the blocked vent
switch activates and shuts down the boiler:
1. Do not attempt to reset the control. Call a qualified
service agency to locate the source of the problem. To
determine which device has activated, press the reset
button on the manual reset devices one at a time and
observe which one causes the ignition system to
operate.
2. If the blocked vent switch has activated, the service
technician must inspect the entire vent system. If the
flame roll-out switch has been activated then the
service technician must inspect the flueways in the
boiler and clean if necessary. Details for cleaning the
boiler flueways are to be found in the Installation/Service
Manual for the Vitogas 050, ECD boiler.
