Getting Started
Congratulations on your purchase of a VG191/VG191b color ViewPanel®.
Important! Save the original box and all packing material for future shipping needs.
OTE: The word “Windows” refers to Microsoft Windows 95, NT, 98, 2000 and
Me (Millennium).

Precautions
• Sit at least 18" from your ViewPanel.
•Avoid touching the screen. S in oils are
difficult to remove.
•ever remove the rear cover. Your
ViewPanel contains high-voltage parts. You
may be seriously injured if you touch them.
• Avoid exposing your ViewPanel to direct
sunlight or another heat source. Orient your
ViewPanel away from direct sunlight to
reduce glare.
• Always handle your ViewPanel with care
when moving it.
• Place your ViewPanel in a well-ventilated
area. Do not place anything on your
ViewPanel that prevents heat dissipation.
• Ensure the area around the ViewPanel is clean
and free of moisture.
• Do not place heavy objects on the ViewPanel,
video cable, or power cord.
• If smo e, abnormal noise, or strange odor is
present, immediately switch the ViewPanel
off and call your dealer or ViewSonic. It is
dangerous to continue using the ViewPanel.

Quick Installation
1 Connect power cord and AC/DC
adapter
Connect the power cord and AC/DC adapter
from the ViewPanel to a properly grounded
AC outlet.
2 Connect video cable
Ma e sure both the ViewPanel® and
computer are turned OFF.
• Remove the lower bac cover and lift up the
upper bac cover.
• Connect the video cable to the computer then
to the ViewPanel. Both analog and digital
ports are available on the bac of the
ViewPanel for your convenience.
Macintosh users: Models older than G3
require a Macintosh adapter. Attach the
adapter to the computer and plug the video
cable into the adapter.
To order a ViewSonic® Macintosh adapter,
contact ViewSonic ustomer Support.
3 Turn ON iewPanel and
computer
• Turn ON the ViewPanel, then turn ON the
computer. This sequence (ViewPanel
before computer) is important.
OTE: Windows 95, 98 or 2000 users may
receive a message as ing them to install the
INF file. This is on the CD.
4 Insert the iewSonic Wizard CD
into the computer’s CD drive.
(1) Insert the ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM
into your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
If your computer does not have a CD-ROM
drive, see “Customer Support.”
(2) Wait for the CD-ROM to auto-start.
OTE: If the CD-ROM does not auto-start:
double-clic on the CD-ROM icon in the
Windows Explorer, then double-clic on
viewsonic.exe.
(3) Follow the on-screen instructions.
5 Windows users: Set the timing
mode (resolution and refresh
rate)
Example: 1280 X 1024 @ 60 Hz.
For instructions on changing the resolution
and refresh rate, see the graphic card’s user
guide.
Installation is complete. Enjoy your new
ViewSonic ViewPanel.
To be best prepared for any future customer
service needs: print this user guide and write
the serial number in "For Your Records” on
page 2. (See bac of ViewPanel.)
You can register your product online at the
website for your region. See the Customer
Support table in this guide.
The ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM also
provides an opportunity for you to print the
registration form which you may mail or fax
to ViewSonic.

Landscape/Portrait Modes
The VG191/VG191b ViewPanel can operate in either Landscape or Portrait
mode. Follow the instructions that accompany the Perfect Portrait software.
To switch from Landscape (default) to Portrait mode, do the following:
1From the front, gently raise the ViewPanel to allow more clearance.
2Pull the bottom of the ViewPanel outward and away from the base.
3Manually rotate the VG191/VG191b cloc wise 90 degrees as shown above.
To Raise and Lower the display
You can easily raise and lower the display panel (the head) manually. As you
face the front of the display, ta e hold of each side of the head and pull up or
down. The panel should move easily.
ote: Before using the portrait
display mode, first install the Perfect
PortraitT software included with
your VG191/VG191b ViewPanel.
Perfect Portrait software is
compatible with most PCI and AGP
graphics (video) cards.

Installation of Wall Mount (Optional)
To obtain a wall-mounting it, contact ViewSonic or your local dealer. Refer to
the instructions that come with the base mounting it. To convert your
ViewPanel from a des -mounted to a wall-mounted display, do the following:
1Disconnect Power.
2Lay the ViewPanel face down on
a towel or blan et.
3Pull the bac plate away from the
head of the ViewPanel. Let the
plate hang on the nec of the
ViewPanel as shown on the left.
Notice the four screws.
4Remove the four screws from the
bac plate.
5Attach the mounting brac et
from the VESA compatible wall-
mounting it (100 mm x 100 mm
distance).
6Attach the ViewPanel to the wall,
following the instructions in the
wall-mounting it.

Using the iewPanel
Setting the Timing Mode
Setting the timing mode is important for maximizing the quality of the screen
image and minimizing eye strain. The timing mode consists of the resolution
(example 1280 x 1024) and refresh rate (or vertical frequency--example 60
Hz). After setting the timing mode, use the OnView® controls to adjust the
screen image.
For the best picture quality set your ViewPanel: ESA®
1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz
To set the Timing Mode:
1Set the resolution: Right-clic on the Windows® des top > Properties >
Settings > set the resolution.
2Set the refresh rate: See your graphic card's user guide for instructions.
WAR I G: Do not set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the
maximum refresh rate of 75Hz; doing so may result in permanent damage to
your ViewPanel.
OSD and Power Button Lock Modes
OSD Lock This mode loc s all current control settings and prevents access to
the control menus until this mode is unloc ed.
• To loc all OSD menus, press and hold both the [1] button and the ▲ (up-
arrow) button for 10 seconds. While in this mode, when any button is pushed,
OSD Locked will display for a few seconds.
• To unloc the OSD menus, press and hold both the [1] button and the ▲ (up-
arrow) button for 10 seconds.
Power Button Lock This mode loc s the power of the ViewPanel in the ON
position.
• To loc the power of the ViewPanel ON, press and hold both the [1] button
and the ▼ (down-arrow) button for 10 seconds. While in this mode, when the
power button is pushed, Power Button Locked will display for a few seconds.
• NOTE: After a power failure, whether or not the Power Button Loc mode
was active, your ViewPanel’s power will automatically turn on when power is
restored.
• To unloc this mode, press and hold both the [1] button and the ▼ (down
arrow) again for 10 seconds.

Adjusting the Screen Image
Use the buttons on the front control panel to display and adjust the OnView®
controls which display on the screen. The OnView controls are explained at the
top of the next page and are defined in “Main Menu Controls” on page 10.

Do the following to adjust the screen image:
1To display the Main Menu, press button [1].
2To highlight a control you want to adjust, press ▲ or ▼ to scroll up or down
the Main Menu.
3To select the highlighted control, press button [2]. A control screen appears
li e the one shown below for the selected control.
4To adjust the selected control, press the up ▲ or down ▼ buttons on the Front
Control Panel of the monitor.
5To save the adjustments and exit the menu, press button [1] twice.
The following tips may help you optimize your display:
• Adjust your computer's graphic card so that it outputs a video signal 1280 x
1024 @ 60Hz to the VG191/VG191b. (Loo for instructions on “changing
the refresh rate” in your graphic card's user guide.)
• If necessary, ma e small adjustments using H POSITION and V POSITION
until the screen image is completely visible. (The blac border around the
edge of the screen should barely touch the illuminated “active area” of the
ViewPanel®.)
• Adjust FINE TUNE so that the screen image loo s focused, crisp, and sharp.
OTE: Auto Image Adjust and Manual Image adjust are inactive for digital mode.
OTE: All OnView menus and adjustment screens disappear automatically
after about 15 seconds. This time period is adjustable through the Setup menu
and the OSD timeout control described on page 13.
