ments and the following safety instructions in these operating instruc-
tions when performing any tasks on the OCD6000-F62.
Before the OCD6000-F62 is placed in service, this instruction manual
must be read carefully.
Maintenance and mounting tasks must only be performed when there
is no electrical power flowing in the device.

2 Product description
The OCD6000-F62-R4-V15 static scanner is used for direction-selective measuring
of the distance to a retroreflector up to a maximum distance of six meters. The sensor
does not contain any movable mechanical parts.
It is designed specially for distance monitoring and collision protection for overhead
electrical conveyors and travel paths. Direction-selective distance monitoring is achie-
ved by masking and unmasking various measurement directions. It allows for stable
behaviour even during curved travel.

Construction and function
The horizontal measurement range is approximately +/- 40° with seven different seg-
ments.
The angle resolution within the measurement range is achieved by seven switching
transmitter diode pairs whose directions of measurement differ by 12°.
The transmitter diodes can be switched in eight predefined patterns that are referred
to as transmission patterns (see page 13, Command set). The detection range active
at any given time is derived from these patterns.
The receiver consists of a photo-diode array and has a fixed detection range of ap-
proximately +/- 40° horizontally and +/- 6° vertically. There is no angle resolution in
the vertical direction.
Figure 2.2: Measurement range segmentation
The device has a half-duplex-capable RS485 interface. Using this interface, the de-
vice is capable of controlling with a defined command set and reading measured va-
lues.
The device measures the distance between the sensor and retroreflector at a selec-
ted angle segment. The distance measurement is performed based on the principle
of phase correlation.
The transmitter selection is made by control command and direction parameters
using the RS 485 interface.

4 Detection range (schematic)
Type OFR-800/200 is recommended as a reflector. Unless indicated otherwise, the
detection range information refers to this reflector layout.
Figure 4.1: Detection range (schematic)
4.1 Geometrical arrangement
The following configuration may be considered as a possible way to reduce the de-
tection range:
Figure 4.2: Geometric layout
The following should apply in accordance
with figure 4.2:
•αMAX = Limit detection angle
•βMAX = Limiting angle of the retroreflector
in reference to the perpendicular of the
incident beam
Because of the large angle of divergence, using multiple sensors in a
single system at the same time may result in interference between the
devices, which may result in turn in incorrect measurement results.
It may be important in such cases to provide for appropriate optical
shielding!

4.2 Practically achievable limit distances
The maximum detection range of 4900 mm is reached it the horizontal angle
α= 0 ° and the tilt angle β= 0 °.
When the OCD6000-F62 static scanner is used in electro-suspension webs, experi-
ence shows that this condition in particular is not always met. Depending on the curve
radii designed into the system, the following non-ideal conditions may arise:
• The reflector array is screwed out to the optimal alignment, i.e. the angle ß≠0°. This
results in a deterioration of the return beam properties of the reflector array itself
and reduces the projected surface of the reflectors.
• The optimally effective direction segments are not activated in the sensor, so that
the reflector array us moved out of the active measurement range.
These two circumstances may cause a reduction in the limit detection range.
(1): for pattern 85h. One column, the middle one, is active.
(2): for pattern 83h or 84h. The two outer columns are active.
(3): for pattern 82h. The three middle columns are active.
All information above refers to an ambient temperature of 20 °C.
The specified distance error is not exceeded at the detection ranges indicated.
All values indicated here refer to deliveries in CW18/03 or later

5 Serial communication
5.1 Transmission frame
The sensor is equipped with a half-duplex-capable RS-485 interface. It is therefore
bus-capable, but works essentially as a slave, i.e. it must be "accessed" by a higher-
level control system that is working in master mode to be able to send results. The
following protocol has been implemented:
• 8-bit data + 1-bit address selection + 1 start/stop bit; at 62,500 baud.
• If the ninth bit (address selection) was set, the slave recognizes that this byte is in
fact an address (ID). It compares this address with its own and if the two are iden-
tical, responds immediately after the frame end of the master is detected.. The ninth
bit is always reset when data is transferred.
The structure of the transfer frame is as follows:
General:
Request (from the master):
Response (from the OCD6000-F62-...):
where:
• xxx_Id = address or sender (1 byte)
• Length = number of characters sent, including frame (1 byte)
• Command = control command (1 byte)
• Parameter = 0 ... n, depending on the command (0 ... n Byte), nmax = 48
• Checksum = test sums by "Exclusive OR" of all characters set (1 byte)
Alternative mode:19200 Baud/8/N/1-PC-compatible (not bus-capable)
In the case of a transmission error (incorrect check sum or missing slave response)
the same command should be repeated.
The master request (= command) and the slave response are each transferred in the
frame described above. Values that are expected back from the slave are included in
the respective parameters that are sent back -->
The slave (OCD6000-F62-...) always returns the currently measured distance as the
last parameter byte (coding as in the command <C>, i. e. value * 2.5 cm). It generally
recognizes the following possibilities for the response:

5.2 Command set
Control commands that have been implemented are described below. All commands
that change the configuration of the sensor are stored in non-volatile memory (EE-
PROM). However, this does not apply to commands with the marking (**)! Continuous
measurement is not interrupted by communication. After the end of the command,
new states are written during ongoing operation as long as the new states are not de-
fined to interrupt operation (for example "RESET").
The following table contains a description of the individual control commands:

6.1 Mounting:
The sensor should be fastened onto the vehicle using the mounting holes on the fa-
stening plate. The reflector should be fastened onto the following vehicle, also in a sui-
table manner.
The installation location for both units should be selected so that a clear field of vision
from the sensor to the reflector is always guaranteed in normal operation. This will eli-
minate interruptions in operation.
M12 connectors are used to connect the operating voltage and the interface.

The reflector must be correctly oriented to achieve maximum detection ranges. The
orientation can be determined using hexagonal honeycomb grids for reflector foil

be seen in the following illustration, show the relative orientation to the sensor.

6.5 Switch on
After the operating voltage has been turned on, the sensor requires at least a warm-
up phase of approximately 5 minutes to achieve the specified accuracy of measure-
ment.
The sensor can be operated either in PC mode or in Standard mode. The switchover
is performed automatically by the sensor:
• If the sensor is connected to a PC with the corresponding software before it is tur-
ned on, the sensor remains in PC mode and returns the measured values to the
PC. A pre-condition is that the PC must send a valid command within about 0.8 se-
conds of when the sensor is turned on. If the sensor does not detect any PC within
approximately 0.8 after it is turned on, it switches automatically into the basic set-
ting, Standard mode.
• If the sensor is connected to the machine control system, it will automatically switch
into the basic setting BUS mode after 0.8 s. The sensor then uses the command
Get Distance 'C' to transmit the results of the measurement to the machine control
system.
