Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this digital camcorder. Everything you need to take quality digital photos and
videos is included with your digital camcorder.
Vivitar makes capturing those special moments as easy as possible.
Note:
Your digital camcorder requires an SD Memory card (up to 32GB) for normal use. SD Memory
cards are not included and need to be purchased separately.
Important: It is recommended to use a Class 4 SD Memory card or higher.
This camera is a plug and play device. You can download the pictures and videos captured by your
camera without the software by directly accessing the camera’s memory card from your computer.
It is recommended however that you install the Vivitar Experience Image Manager Software to
enjoy the full Vivitar experience.
Please read this manual carefully first in order to get the most out of your digital camcorder.

Preparing Your Camcorder
CHARGING THE BUILT-IN BATTERY
Important: Before charging the battery, make sure you are not near water and that your hands are dry.
In order to charge your built-in lithium battery:
1) Power off the camcorder.
2) Connect your camcorder with the provided USB/AV cable to the USB port of your computer or to
the provided AC Charger (and then to an electric socket) as shown above.
3) The red LED will light up indicating that your camcorder is in charging mode.
4) Allow the battery to charge for at least 3 hours before using the first time.
5) The charge light will turn off when the battery is fully charged.
Note:
The energy status of the power is displayed on LCD as shown below:
Full battery power Medium battery power Low battery power
A red battery icon will flash on the LCD when the battery power is insufficient. Shortly thereafter
your camcorder will power off.

INSTALLING THE SD MEMORY CARD
Important: Before installing the SD Memory card, make sure you are not near water and that your
hands are dry.
SD compatible memory card of up to 32GB must be installed in order to capture videos and photos.
It is recommended to use a Class 4 SD Memory card or higher.
To install the SD Memory Card:
1) Press the lever to open the SD Memory Card / USB Slot
Compartment cover.
2) Insert the SD memory card correctly in the direction as shown in the
illustration.
3) Press the memory card until you hear a “Click”sound.
Note:
After you insert an SD memory card, the SD card icon will appear on the top right of the LCD,
indicating that your SD memory card has been installed successfully. The media you capture will
now be stored on the card and not in the internal memory.
Before using the camcorder, be sure to format the card with the camcorder (see the Format section
further on in the manual for instruction on how to format the card).
Formatting will delete all data on the SD Memory Card.
Download all the media to your computer before you format the card.
Do not remove the SD Memory Card during formatting as this may damage the card and render it
unusable.
Images saved to the memory card are not lost when your camcorder’s power runs low or on
replacing the battery.
We strongly recommend downloading your photos and videos regularly to your computer.
Make sure that the card is not locked. Locked cards do not allow images to transfer to the card.

Press the POWER button to turn on the camcorder.

Initial Camcorder Setup
When powering the camcorder ON for the first time the camcorder will take you through the initial
setup.
SETTING THE CAMERA LANGUAGE
You will first be prompted to select a language for the camera. The Language selection menu will
appear. Select the language of your choice by pressing the UP and DOWN direction control buttons.
Then press the OK button to confirm the selection.
SETTING THE DATE AND TIME
The next step in the initial camera setup is to set the date and time on the camcorder.
Set the date and time as desired by pressing the RIGHT and LEFT direction control buttons to choose
the specific part of the date/time setting and then the UP and DOWN buttons to change and specify
each setting.
Once you have completed setting the time and date, press the OK button to confirm and move to the
next part of the camera setup.
SETTING THE VIVILINK DEFAULT OPTION
Once the date and time have been set, you will be asked to set the default ViviLink destination for
photos and videos taken with your camcorder.
The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder’s photos and videos
to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying software application.
1) First you will be asked to choose the default ViviLink social network for Photos. Use the UP and
DOWN buttons to highlight the desired default social network and press the OK button to confirm
the selection.
2) Next you will be asked to choose the default ViviLink social network for Videos. Use the UP and
DOWN buttons to highlight the desired default social network and press the OK button to confirm
the selection.
Congratulations! Your camcorder is now ready to use.

Using the Camcorder Underwater
Your Vivitar DVR 850HD is specially designed to be used to capture high quality photos and videos
underwater.
Before using your camcorder underwater you will need to make sure that the USB cover is sealed
tightly. If the USB cover is not closed properly, water will enter the USB port or SD card slot and
this will irreversibly damage your camera.
The camcorder is water resistant to a depth of 10 feet / 3 meters. Do not dive with your camera
beyond this depth.
OPENING THE USB COVER
In order to charge the battery or insert the SD card into the camcorder, make sure you are away from
water and your hands are dry. Turn and hold the camcorder so that the bottom section is facing up.
Hold the main body of the camcorder firmly with one hand and use the index finger of the other hand to
press and pull the small USB cover lever down to the end as indicated in diagram (A) and (B). You
might need to exert some force before hearing a “click”. The USB cover will be released and will
open slowly (C). Gently open the USB cover with your finger.

Note:
When opening the USB cover, please ensure that your hands are dry.
When opening the USB cover, do not hold the LCD screen side as excessive force may destroy
the screen joint.
In order to assure water resistance, do not attempt to remove or rip off the Rubber Seal inside the
USB cover.

As this is a water resistance camcorder, you may feel that the door is very tight and difficult to open.
This is normal. Just follow the above instructions, and make sure to pull the USB cover lever to the
end of the slot.
CLOSING THE USB COVER
After charging and correctly inserting the SD card, make sure the Rubber Seal is clean and no dirt is
sticking to it before closing. Close the SD card cover door by gently moving it upwards with your finger.
To assure that the cover is closed properly, firmly press down on the section of the USB cover
appearing with four lines under the small USB cover lever as shown in diagram (A) below. You will
hear a “click” as it locks into place.

Note:
Check that the small USB cover lever clicks back into place and is in line with the mark line
appearing on the side of the lever as shown in (B).
Make sure the water resistant USB cover is closed properly before using the camcorder
underwater. If a gap appears reopen and close the USB cover as explained above.

Camcorder Maintenance
MAINTENANCE AND CARE
1) Before using the camcorder underwater make sure you know how the camcorder works.
Reading through the Camera Manual will help you get to know your camcorder.
2) Insert the SD card and charge the battery away from water and with dry hands before going
underwater.
3) Make sure the water resistant USB cover is closed properly before going underwater with your
camcorder.
4) Do not open the USB cover while underwater.
5) Use the camcorder as you normally would to capture photos and videos.
6) The digital camcorder is a delicate device. Please handle your camcorder with care to avoid
damaging it.
7) Do not expose your camcorder to heat sources.
8) If the camcorder cannot be used correctly, please use a thin stick or rod and insert it into the reset
hole to reset the camcorder. The stick cannot be too sharp in order not to destroy the silicon inside
the reset hole.
DRYING OUT YOUR CAMCORDER AFTER USING UNDERWATER
After capturing images underwater it is normal that some water will enter the body (but not USB cover
if closed properly) of the camcorder. This will not damage the camcorder or the images captured.
Once out of the water, dry the camera with a dry towel. Any water in the camcorder will eventually dry
out by itself. Turn and rest the camcorder top down on a dry and flat surface as shown in the diagram
below. This will allow the water to drain. This may take up to 3-4 hours to dry by itself.

Note:
Do not shake the camera to throw the water off.
Do not open the USB cover until the camera is totally dry.
Turn the camera around in all directions and notice if there are still signs of water before opening
the USB cover.
If you use the camcorder in sea (salt) water, please rinse the camcorder with fresh clean water as
soon as you can afterwards. Sea water has a high salt content, as well as small particles of sand
and this may damage the camcorder.
Warning:
If any water enters the USB cover, this will damage the camcorder.
If there is a little water on the edge of the USB cover when the door is opened, dry it carefully with a
soft cloth before opening.
Do not let the water get inside the USB port or SD Memory card slot.
Do not attempt to open the camcorder casing, tamper or dismantle the camcorder.

Main Camcorder Modes
Your camera has different modes for the various camera functions.
You can switch modes by pressing the MODE buttons on your camcorder after the camcorder has
been powered ON.
VIDEO CAPTURE MODE
Use this mode to capture videos with your digital camera.
This is the default mode when the camera is powered ON.
To take a video, aim your camera as desired and press the DV Mode/Shutter button to
start the record. A red recording indicator will appear on the LCD screen while the recording
is in progress. To stop the recording, press the DV Mode/Shutter button again. The video
will be automatically saved to the camcorder’s SD memory card.
To access the various menus for the Video Capture mode, press the OK/MENU button
while in the Video Capture mode.
PHOTO CAPTURE MODE
Use this mode to capture pictures with your camcorder.
After turning on your camcorder, press the DC Mode/Shutter button to open the Photo
Capture mode.
To take a picture, aim your camcorder as desired and press the DC Mode/Shutter button.
The picture will be automatically saved to your camera’s SD memory card.
To access the various menus for the Photo Capture mode, press the OK/MENU button
while in the Photo Capture mode.
PLAYBACK MODE (PHOTOS & VIDEOS)
Use this mode to view and manage the photos and videos on your camera.
After turning on your camera, press the Playback button to open the Playback mode for
photos and videos. You can scroll through the photos and videos that you’ve previously
taken to view, edit or delete them as desired.
To access the various menus for the Playback mode for photos and videos, press the
OK/MENU button while in the Playback mode.

To be able to download photos and videos to your WINDOWS OS OR MACINTOSH OS computer
using the Vivitar Experience Image Manager Software, you will need the following minimum

Powering ON/OFF Your Digital Camcorder
Make sure the batteries have been inserted properly into your digital camcorder.
If your camcorder uses a rechargeable lithium battery, make sure the battery is fully charged.
Make sure an SDHC card has been inserted into your camcorder.
(SDHC card up to 32GB - SD Card not included).
It is recommended to use an SDHC Class 4 SD card or higher.
POWERING THE CAMCORDER ON
Flip open the LCD Panel on the side of the camcorder.
The Camcorder will automatically power on.
Alternatively, press the Power button to turn your camcorder ON.
The camcorder will be in Video Capture mode to start.
POWERING THE CAMCORDER OFF
To camcorder will automatically power off when the LCD Panel is returned to the side of the
camcorder.
Alternatively, while the camcorder is on, you can press the Power button at any point to turn your
camcorder OFF. You will see a “Goodbye” splash screen and then the camcorder powers off
completely.
POWER SAVING –AUTO OFF
Your digital video camera also has an Auto Power Off feature that will automatically turn off your
camcorder after a specific period of time that your camcorder is left idle. The Auto Power Off settings
can be set from the Auto Power Off settings menu.

Changing Camcorder Mode
Your camcorder has three main modes:
1) DV (Digital Video) Video Capture Mode - Use this mode to capture videos with your camcorder.
2) DC (Digital Camera) Photo Capture Mode - Use this mode to capture photos with your
camcorder.
3) Playback Mode - Use this mode to view the photos and videos you have already taken with your
camcorder.
When the camcorder is first powered ON, the DV (Video) Capture Mode will be active.
The icons that appear on the LCD screen are the best default settings so that you can begin to capture
and enjoy clear quality photos.
To change the active camcorder mode, make sure the camcorder is powered ON.
Press the DC Mode button to select the DC (Photo) mode.
Press the Playback Button on the inside wall of the DVR to open the Playback mode.
When in Video Capture Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display.
When in Photo Capture Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display.
When in Playback Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display.

Navigating the Menus
Each camcorder mode has a set of menus specific to that mode.
1) Press the OK (MENU/SET) button to open the menus for the current mode.
2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT direction control button to scroll between the various menus for the
current mode.
3) Press the UP or DOWN direction control button to highlight the desired menu selection.
4) Press the OK (MENU/SET) button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option.
5) If the selection can be remembered by the camcorder, a selection icon will appear to the right of
the selected menu option. Changes made to these options will remain as is until you decide to
change them again at a later time.
6) Some menu options are single-use functions that are not remembered by the camcorder and do
not display this icon when selected.
7) At any time you can press the DV/DC MODE button to exit the menus and return to the previous
mode.
Camcorder Features: Flash LED Lights, ViviLink
LED FLASH LIGHT FEATURE
To increase the lighting in dark situations while capturing videos and photos, use the 2 LED Flash
Lights on the front of the camcorder below the lens.
LED ON:
Press the RIGHT button to activate the LED Lights.
LED OFF:
Press the RIGHT button again to deactivate the LED Lights.

VIVILINK FEATURE
The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder’s photos and videos
to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying Vivitar Experience™Image Manager
application. A ViviLink destination can be assigned to a photo or video in Capture mode prior to
capturing your image or in Playback Mode.
Video or Photo Capture Mode:
Press the LEFT Quick Function Button to open the ViviLink options. Select a ViviLink option and press
OK to save your selection and return to Capture mode. Your selected ViviLink destination appears as
an icon on the LCD screen and your camcorder is now ready to capture your video or photo with the
selected ViviLink destination.
Note: The ViviLink feature is deactivated by default and needs to be activated prior to capturing each
video or photo. If you have selected a ViviLink destination during the initial camcorder setup, your
destination is automatically selected upon opening the ViviLink menu.
Playback Mode:
A ViviLink destination can be added to a captured image or changed by accessing the ViviLink menu
in Playback Mode. Simply select an image, press the OK (MENU/SET) button and select the ViviLink
menu. Select the ViviLink destination and press the OK button. The selected ViviLink destination icon
appears on the LCD.

Video Capture Mode
The Video Capture Mode allows you to capture videos with your digital camcorder.
When the camcorder is first powered ON, it will be in Video Capture Mode.
TAKING A VIDEO
1) While in Video Capture Mode use the LCD display to direct your digital camcorder at the scene you
would like to capture.
2) You can magnify your subject up to 4 times using the digital zoom while capturing your photos and
recording your videos.
Press the UP (Zoom In) or DOWN (Zoom Out) button to zoom in and out.
The following Digital Zoom Indicator appears on the right side of the LCD screen:
The zoom indicating bar moves up when you Zoom In and moves down when you Zoom Out. The
current zoom magnification appears below the Digital Zoom Indicator as you zoom.
3) Press the DV/Shutter button to start the video capture.
4) A red, blinking icon appears at the top of the LCD screen indicating that the recording is in progress.
On the top right of the LCD screen, the recording time appears, indicating the amount of elapsed
time as the video is being captured.
5) To stop the video recording, press the DV/Shutter button again.
6) The video is automatically saved to the camcorder’s SD Memory card.
TAKING A VIDEO WITH THE FLIP SCREEN
You can also capture your videos using the Flip Screen to quickly and easily include yourself in the
video.
1) Simply flip open the LCD panel and then twist downward until it flips and turns 180.
2) Hold the camera facing towards you at arm’s length (30~45cm).
3) Make sure you can see yourself within the scene on the LCD screen.
4) Look at the lens, and then press the DV/Shutter button to begin recording.
It’s as easy as twist and shoot!
