KeyB isprovidedforvehiclesequipped
with a lockableglovecompartment.
TagC givesthekeynumber.
For your protection against theft:
•Recordthekeynumberandkeepitina
safe place,suchasyourwallet.Donotkeep
itinthevehicle.
•Ifyoushouldlosea key,provideyour Vol-
kswagendealer with thekeynumberto
obtaina duplicatekey.
Inadditiontotheplastictag,theremayalso
bea metaltagsnowingpartofthevehicle
identificationnumber.Thistagisnolonger
requiredafterthevehiclehasbeendeliv-
ered.
Note
Thesyncromodelhasa separatekeyforthe
lockabletankcap.
A chime willsoundwhenyouopenthe
driver'sdoor with thekey left intheignition
lock.Thisisyourremindertoremovethe
keyandlockthedoors.
WARNING
•Donot leave children unattended in
the vehicle especially with accessto
vehicle keys.Unsuperviseduseofthe
keys can result in starting ofthe engine
anduseof vehicle systemssuchas
power windows etc.Unsuperviseduse
of these systemscan result inserious
personal injury.
•Donot remove key from steering
lock while youare driving orasthe
vehicle is rolling toa stop.The steering
column will lock when you remove the
key,andyou will notbe able to steer the
vehicle.

CENTRAL LOCKINGSYSTEM*
The centrallockingsystemlocksorun-
locks doorsandrearlidsimultaneously.It
is actuatedfromthedriver'sand passen-
ger's door.
•Tolockandunlockfromtheoutside,
turn keyinlockofdriver'sandpassenger's
door.
•Tolockandunlockfromtheinside,raise
ordepresslockingknobonwindowsillof
driver'sandpassenger'sdoor.
When youunlockthe driver's andpas-
senger'sdoor with thekey from the out-
sideor raise thelockingknobs from the
inside, wait until both lockingknobsare
raised before youopenoneofthedoors.
When thecentrallockingsystemisac-
tuated,bothlockingknobsonwindowsills
should movesimultaneously.Ifoneknob
does notmovewhenlockingdoors,open
that particulardoorandcloseitproperly.
Sliding doorandrearlidcanbelockedand
unlocked individually with thekey;manual
lockoperationwilloverridethepowerlock
system.
WARNING
•Lockingdoors from theinsidecan
help prevent inadvertent dooropening
during an accident and generally while
the vehicle isin motion. Lockeddoors
canalso prevent unwanted entry from
theoutside.
Lockeddoorscan, however, also delay
assistanceto vehicle occupantsand
rescue from the outside inthe event of
an accident or other emergency.
•Donot leave children insidethe
vehicle without supervision.Iflocking
knob in driver's andpassenger'sdoor
isdepressed, both doors will belocked
automatically. Inan emergency it
would beimpossibletoopenthedoors
from outside without thekey.
Rear lid
•Withthekeyslotinhorizontalposition
(a),thelidcanbelockedandunlockedby
thecentrallockingsystem.
•Withkeyslotinverticalposition(b),the
rearlidremainslockedwhenactuatingthe
centrallockingsystem.
Iftherearlidisclosed with lockslotinver-
ticalposition,theluggagecompartment
can onlybeopened with themasterkey:
•Insertkeyinlockslot.
•Turnkeyallthewaytothe right (c)and
holdinthisposition.
• Press lockcylinderinandraiselid.
•Removekey.

Front doors
To lock,unlockandopendoorsfromthe
outside
•Lockandunlockthe front doorsby
turningthekeytothe right or left.
•Openthedoorsbysqueezingthetrig-
gerintheouterdoorhandle.
•Thepassenger'sdoorcanbelocked
without a key.Firstdepressthelocking
knob,thenclosethedoor.
•Thedriver's doorcanonlybelocked
fromtheoutside with thekey.Thisprecau-
tion wastakentopreventlockingthe
driver'sdoorwhilethekeyisstillinsidethe
vehicle.
To lock,unlockandopendoorsfromthe
inside
•Tolockdoors depressthelockingknob.
WARNING
Lockingdoors from the inside can help
