Before you go: Prepare your brakes
for optimal performance
BRAKE BED-IN INSTRUCTIONS:
1Perform 20 light slowdowns from 45mph (70 km/h) to 20mph (30 km/h),
with 500metres distance in between each operation.
2Perform 10 medium slowdowns from 55mph (90 km/h) to 30 mph (50 km/h),
with 1,000metres between each operation.
3
Perform 10 hard slowdowns (without activating the ABS system) from
75mph (120 km/h) to 30 mph (50 km/h) , as close in distance as you can,
in order to get the brakes really hot.
4Finish by safely driving 6 miles (10 kilometres) without braking hard in order
to cool the brakes down.
For continued, maximised functionality, we recommend that you periodically
apply the brakes forcefully. The brakes are engineered to be used at a high
level and frequently, they will not be adversely affected by this activity.
The high-performance brakes of your S60/V60 Polestar are born on the racing circuit. For you to get access
to the full potential of the brakes, they first require special preparation. With brand-new brakes, as well as after
servicing the brakes, you need to “bed in” the brake discs and pads. This is a running-in procedure, where you
periodically heat the brakes to a high working temperature. The brakes will, of course, work properly without
bedding-in, but we recommend you to perform this procedure to maximise braking performance.

Manual. It focuses on what makes your S60/V60 Polestar
unique compared to a standard Volvo S60/V60.
Before driving, please read this booklet and keep it
with your regular Volvo Owner’s Manual.
The nature of the S60/V60 Polestar is more performance-
oriented than the standard Volvo S60/V60, and we at

the differences and enjoy what we have strived to create.

in this Owner’s Manual are not binding and may vary
between markets. Polestar reserves the right to make

DRIVER SETTINGS
The recommended setting for regular driving is with
the gear lever in Drive (D-mode) and Electronic Stability
Control (ESC) turned on. This will ensure maximum
comfort and safety and is the default setting.
For more inspired driving, move the gear lever to the Sport
(S-mode) that allows higher revs and faster gearshifts.
In S-mode you can also shift gears manually using either
the gear lever or the gearshift paddles.
Switching ESC to “ESC off” will allow the full Polestar
experience to be unleashed, but should only be done by
experienced drivers, in a safe and controlled environment.
With ESC off, the car will transmit the most power to
the ground through the rear wheels, and the feel of the car
will become more agile. This is the natural choice
for active driving on your favourite road.
See the chapter on stability control in the regular Volvo
Owner’s Manual for S60/V60 for more information,
and to learn more about the purpose and functionality
of this safety feature.
LAUNCH CONTROL
For impressive take-off performance, the Sport (S-mode)
of the gearbox gives you access to the car’s launch control.
It is important that the engine has reached proper
working temperature before the launch control function
isactivated.
To activate launch control, apply the brake pedal and
put the gear selector into S-mode. Next, switch the ESC
to “ESC off” (in “My Car” Menu). Continue to hold the
brake pedal firmly with your left foot, while also applying
pressure to the accelerator pedal with your right foot.
Asyou continue to press the accelerator all the way down,
the engine speed will settle just above 2,400rpm.
This procedure will allow the turbocharger to spool up and
build optimal boost pressure. Once it is safe to drive away,
quickly release the brake pedal for instant take-off.
FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS
It is highly recommended to always use the highest grade
of unleaded fuel available in order to maximise power
output and preserve fuel consumption. The minimum
recommended fuel grade is 98 RON.

EXHAUST SYSTEM
Your Polestar Volvo is equipped with an active exhaust
system. This means the exhaust system is equipped with
two internal valves, which, under certain driving conditions,
open to reduce exhaust back-pressure. The open valves
also result in a slightly louder exhaust note.
The active exhaust is controlled by the gear lever position.
In normal D-mode, the valves are closed most of the time
in order to maintain low noise output and to make the
journey as comfortable as possible. It is recommended
to drive the car in D-mode on public roads.
In D-mode the exhaust valves open when the vehicle speed
is above 75 mph (120 km/h) and the engine load is high.
In S-mode or Manual, both exhaust valves open to reduce
the exhaust back-pressure, allowing the engine to breathe
more freely for optimum performance. This mode is
recommended for active driving on a closed course.
In Park/Neutral, the valves will open during normal idling.
If the engine speed is increased slowly, the valves will
close. If the speed increases quickly, the valves will open.
In Reverse, the valves are always closed.

POLESTAR DYNAMIC DRIVING FEATURES
The engine and transmission software have been
calibrated by Polestar in order to provide optimal
performance under various driving conditions.
It is recommended to drive the car in D-mode for regular
driving when comfort and optimal fuel consumption are
the primary concerns. When in S-mode, the car has
been tuned for more spirited driving or when driving on
a racingcircuit.
In S-mode, the gearbox attempts to ensure the engine
speed is kept at 2,000–3,000rpm whenever the car
maintains a constant speed. In this condition, the car
responds quickly to driver input on the accelerator pedal.
When cornering, the selected gear will be held, unless
a gear change is absolutely necessary to maintain
proper engine speeds. This function is intended to avoid
upsetting the balance of the car during cornering.
The Manual mode has been calibrated to allow the driver
more control, and to closely resemble a fully manual
gearbox. The shift quality has been improved by Polestar
to provide quicker and more direct gear changes.
It is important to know that while in Manual mode, the car
will NOT upshift automatically when it hits the rev limiter.
The only time you can get automatic shifts in Manual mode
is between 1st and 2nd gear, or if the engine speed gets
so low there is a risk of stalling. The transmission will then
downshift as required.
AWD (all-wheel drive) tuning is calibrated to allow for more
power to be transmitted to the rear wheels when switched
to “ESC off” mode than the standard Volvo S60/V60.

TYRES AND TYRE PRESSURE
The high performance summer tyres fitted on your
S60/V60 Polestar are carefully selected by Polestar’s
engineering team and are optimised for maximum dry and
wet performance on normal roads. The tyres also feature
cavity insulation foam to reduce road noise. The standard
summer tyres are primarily designed for normal road use
and are not recommended for race track driving.
Since the car is equipped with large front brakes, it is
important to use the correct wheels. Use only 19" or 20"
Polestar wheels.
Performance tyres with a load index of 95, and speed
category symbol at least W, are also highly recommended.
Please note: The tyre sealing kit is not recommended for
the standard summer tires with cavity noise damping.
The spare tyre, if supplied, does not fit the front axle as a
result of the large front brakes. If you get a flat tyre on the
front wheels, you must first place the spare tyre on one of
the rear wheels before fitting the rear wheel to the front
in order to clear the frontbrakes.

BRAKES
The S60/V60 Polestar is equipped with a high-perform-
ance brake system developed in cooperation with Brembo.
It consists of six-piston front brake calipers and larger
371mm slotted and ventilated brake discs.
Before driving, we strongly recommend you to “bed in”
the brake discs and pads in order to maximise braking
performance. How this running-in procedure is performed,
see page 2.
It is recommended that you always use a Volvo authorised
workshop for any type of brake service or maintenance.
Always drive the car after washing it, allowing you to
slowly bring the brake discs up to temperature before
parking. This will prevent rust accumulation on the discs
and potential contamination of the brake pads.

POLESTAR SUSPENSION
The S60/V60 Polestar is equipped with manually
adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers. While further
adjustability is possible, each vehicle will be delivered
pre-adjusted with optimal settings suitable for spirited
street driving.
Any changes made to your suspension settings should
only be conducted by an experienced professional.
Before making any changes to the shock absorbers,
contact your Polestar approved Volvo Car dealership.
Suspension upgrades:

• Upgraded rear tie-blades

Although the adjustment is done in a couple of minutes,
Polestar recommends owners have this done at their
local Volvo Car dealer.
