Strange as it sounds, creating the V50 sportswagon started
with some rather unexpected matchmaking. Unlikely couples
such as athletics and aesthetics, functionality and form and
subtlety and power were introduced and with more than
a little encouragement, these relationships blossomed into

beautiful application of unconventional wisdom.

Let’s start by blowing away a myth. Bigger cars don’t
necessarily mean bigger environmental impact. On the
contrary, by applying new ideas and smart thinking in the
design phase, quite the opposite can be achieved.
During development, the Volvo V50 DRIVe spent
hundreds of hours in our state-of-the-art wind tunnel.
The physical results are a new grille, lowered chassis and
wheels that compliment an already superb sportswagon.
The environmental benefits of this aerodynamic fine tuning
will be revealed in time. As will the advantages of an engine
that delivers 240 Nm of torque while satisfying itself with
a mere 3.9 litres of fuel per 100 km and producing a miserly
104 g of CO2/km. Small margins we admit, but a clear step in
the right direction and a sign of our continuing commitment
to build cars that perform today with tomorrow in mind.

There is only one seating position in a Volvo V50 sportswagon
– comfortable. In the same way, every item of equipment
has one common characteristic – intelligence. Attention to
detail and quality of materials characterises this interior.
The inlays and centre console are crafted from real wood,
for example. The cabin on the V50 sportswagon is an

achieve this? By only thinking of one thing when we

Intelligent engine design
starts with ditching the
rear view mirror.
The Volvo V50 engine programme embodies our commitment
to deliver power with consideration. Choose from petrol, diesel
or renewable bioethanol, four or five cylinders and a range of
engines from 100 hp to a muscular 230 hp.
In its class, the Flexifuel engine is among one of the
worlds kindest when it comes to sustainable construction
and emissions while our new five-cylinder D4 powertrain
combines a Euro 5 emission certification with a beefy
400 Nm torque and ReGen technology, a feature that
recharges the battery as soon as the accelerator pedal
is released. Forward thinking engines in every way and
metaphorically speaking, the result of ditching the
rear view mirror – for everyone’s sake.

It’s hard not to smile when you’re experiencing the ride in

Fast responding after a cold star t, Vol vo’s advanced
emission control eliminates between 95 a nd 99% of
carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from
petrol engine exhaust ga ses. The Volvo turb odiesels
feature a par ticulate filter that re moves about 95% of
the particles from the diesel exhaust gases.
Maximised fuel efficiency with diesel.
Volvo’s advanced common-rail turbodiesel technology ensures
superior fuel economy and low CO2emissions – from t he
109 hp DRIVe Start /Stop to the new 177 hp D4.
104 g CO2 per km.
Our latest eco-progress, the Volvo V50 DRIVe Start/Stop,
satisfies itself with only 3.9 litres fuel per 100 km – for minimum

Our journey towards a better environment started already in the early 70’s. Then
we were among the first carmakers to acknowledge the environmental downside
of cars and to do something about it. Since then we are constantly innovating to
reduce the environmental impact of the cars and how we make them.
Today’s biggest challenge is, of course, to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that
cause climate change. Today we offer one of the premium segments strongest ranges
of low CO2alternatives: the Volvo DRIVe variants. Utilising innovative powertrain

lightweight materials, the DRIVe range is an important step towards zero emissions.

Running on E85 bioethanol in a Volvo Flexifuel (2.0F), you can
significantly cut your greenhouse gas emissions. B ecause
bioethanol is a renewable fuel, the c arbon dioxide emissions
from co mbustion is already part of the ecosystem and won’t
contribute to greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

All our upholsteries and interior textiles are tested for

Can cheating the wind be good for it? We think so. Design and drivetrain modifications significantly reduce
air-resistance and minimise CO2emissions. For example, a special front grille, spoilers, wheel deflectors,
aerodynamic wheels (15"or 16"Libra) and a lowered chassis help reduce drag. And Volvo’s state-of-the-ar t
240 Nm common rail turbodiesel Star t/Stop technology, brake energy regeneration, heightened gear
ratios, optimised electro-hydraulic power steering, newly-developed transmission oil (that reduces internal
resistance), and energy-saving tyres – all help lower CO2emissions significantly.
