CAUTION
This equipment employs a visible Class 1 (7 milliwatts) laser beam.
Laser radiation may be present when the drive operates without panels
or covers installed. Use of controls or adjustments, or performance of
procedures other than those specified herein, may result in eye dam-
age. Avoid looking directly in to the laser beam path or any reflection
of it. Laser light of this intensity can cause serious eye damage. If your
SuperDisk Drive does not work, never open the Drive. Drives will be
opened by authorized service personnel only.

Setting Up the VST SuperDisk Software
Before using your new VST SuperDisk for PowerBook, it is necessary to
install driver software to allow the drive to interact properly with your
PowerBook. The Tools software adds functionality to the drive while
extending its features and making it easier to use. Follow the instructions
below to ensure that the software installs properly.
Note: You will need to restart your PowerBook during the
installation process, so be sure to quit all open
applications and save all files.
1. Insert the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive into the expansion bay of your
PowerBook.
2. Insert the VST SuperDisk Drive Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Double click on the SuperDisk Installer and follow the directions.
4. Restart your PowerBook.
5. For PowerBooks with only one available expansion bay, remove the
CD from the CD-ROM drive and then remove the CD-ROM drive.
6. Insert the VST SuperDisk Drive into the expansion bay.
7. Insert a SuperDisk or floppy diskette into the drive. The diskette
icon should appear on your Desktop within a few seconds.

Installing the VST SuperDisk Drive
for PowerBook G3 Series
Before using your new VST SuperDisk Drive for the PowerBook, it is neces-
sary to install driver software to allow the drive to function properly with
your computer. (See “Setting Up the VST SuperDisk Software” on the
previous page.)
It is important that your PowerBook is turned off when you insert the
SuperDisk Drive into the expansion bay for the first time. After software
installation, the drive is hot-swappable (the drive can be removed and
inserted without shutting down) on the PowerBook G3 Series.
You will need to restart your computer during installation, so be sure
to quit all open applications and save your files.
1. With the power off,
remove the floppy
or CD drive.
By gently pulling
the eject lever
toward you
(see drawing
on the right).
2. Remove the floppy or CD drive
from the expansion bay.
3. Gently slide the SuperDisk
Drive into the bay until it
snaps into place.
The SuperDisk Drive for the PowerBook G3 Series fits into either the right
or left expansion bay. Two drives (CD, floppy, SuperDisk or Zip) may be
used simultaneously in conjunction with an AC power adapter.

The VST SuperDisk drive lets you save or copy files to a SuperDisk diskette
or floppy diskette in the same manner that you use to save or copy files to
other storage media. After inserting the diskette into the drive, simply drag
your file to the diskette icon. (Details about using diskettes are found in the
next section.)
Some SuperDisk drive features are shown in the following figure and
described after the figure.
•Disk Eject Button —The disk eject button is disabled during normal
operation on Mac OS computers.
•Emergency Eject Hole — provided for ejecting a diskette when you
lose power to your system. See “Emergency Diskette Ejection” for
details about when and how to use this feature.
• SuperDisk Busy LED — check the status of the SuperDisk drive by
looking at the state of SuperDisk Busy LED. The LED flashes under
the following conditions:
- While data is being transferred to or from the diskette
-While a diskette is being inserted into the drive or removed.
During diskette removal, the SuperDisk Busy LED blinks as the
SuperDisk drive spins down. The drive takes a few seconds to
eject the diskette.
Diskette Insertion and Removal
Once the SuperDisk Drive is inserted into the expansion bay, insert or
remove a diskette as follows.
•Insert a diskette — Hold the diskette label side up and gently insert it
into the drive. The mechanism engages and looks for the disk when
the disk is fully inserted
•When you insert a SuperDisk diskette, the green busy light will flash

momentarily and go out. (If the light continues to blink slowly, gently
push the disk eject button to eject the SuperDisk diskette, then reinsert
it.)
• To eject the disk during normal operation, select the SuperDisk diskette
icon and use Put Away from the File menu ( Y on your keyboard ) or
drag the SuperDisk diskette icon to the Trash icon. The green busy
light blinks as the drive “spins down” and then ejects the disk.
•The SuperDisk drive will automatically eject the disk when you shut
down your PowerBook. Store all your SuperDisk diskettes in the
protective case when not in use.
Emergency Diskette Ejection
The PowerBook must be powered on to remove a diskette from the drive
under normal circumstances. If you lose power to your system, you must
remove a diskette in the following manner.
1. Locate the Emergency Eject hole.
2. Carefully push a fully straightened paper clip
into the hole.
Caution: Use extreme caution when employ-
ing this method. Excessive force or a bent paper
clip may damage the SuperDisk drive.
Only use the emergency disk ejection procedure
when the computer is without power. Do not try to forcibly remove a
diskette from the drive. If the diskette does not eject immediately, repeat
the emergency eject procedure.
SuperDisk Diskette Tips
This section offers valuable tips to ensure that you get the most from your
VST SuperDisk drive. Adhering to these tips will help your drive run without
problems.
•Never force a diskette into or out of the drive.
•Return the diskette to its case when it is not in use.
• Avoid exposing diskettes or the drive to direct sunlight, high tempera-
tures, moisture, and magnetic fields.
Caution: NEVER use ordinary 3.5” head cleaning diskettes in the
SuperDisk drive. Doing so will damage the drive.
If any of the tips listed here are unclear, or if you have additional questions
about the SuperDisk proper use and care, please contact the VST Technical
Support Department at (978) 635-8282.
