Troubleshooting and Repair
If your VFF5 Visual Fault Finder does not power ON properly, check
batteries for weak or discharged condition and proper polarity installa-
tion. Otherwise, contact Wavetek centers listed below or your local

WARRANTY
The VFF5 Visual Fault Finder is warranted against any defects of mate-
rial or workmanship within a period of one (1) year following the date
of purchase of the VFF5 by the original purchaser or user.
Any instrument claimed to be defective during the warranty period
should be returned with proof of purchase to an authorized Wavetek
Corporation service center or to the local Wavetek dealer or distributor
where the instrument was purchased.
Any implied warranties arising out of the sale of a Wavetek instrument,
including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and
fitness for a particular purpose, are limited in duration to the above stat-
ed one (1) year period. Wavetek shall not be liable for loss of use of
the instrument or other incidental or consequential damages, expens-
es, or economical loss or for any claim or claims for such damage,
expenses, or economical loss.
Some states do not allow limitations on how long implied warranties
last or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential dam-
ages, so the above limitations may not apply to you.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have
other rights which vary from state to state..

The VFF5 Visual Fault Finder is a light source used to locate breaks and mis-
connections in fiber optic cables. The operator simply looks at the length of cable
and where light is seen there is a break. The VFF5 is equipped with a high power,
670nm visible laser diode which operates either in Continuous (CW) or Modulated
(MOD, 1Hz) mode. A Red LED on the outer case echoes the operation mode selec-
ted. The VFF5 is packaged in a pocket-sized, rugged metal housing and is battery
powered.
Das VFF5 Fehlersuchgerät ist eine Lichtquelle mit welcher Brüche und schlechte
Verbindungen in Lichtwellenleitern aufgespürt werden können. Bei angeschlosse-
nem Gerät betrachten Sie einfach eine Kabellänge – wo Sie Licht sehen, is ein
Kabelbruch. Das VFF5 ist mit einer Hochleistungs-, 670nm Laserdiode ausgerüstet,
welche entweder in kontinuierlicher (CW) or modulierter (MOD, 1Hz) Betriebsart
betrieben wird. Eine rote LED, welche am Gehäuse angebracht ist, leuchtet im
Gleichtakt mit der Laserdiode. Das VFF5 ist batteriebetrieben und in einem kompak-
ten, strapazierfähigen Metallgehäuse untergebracht.
El localizador de fallos VFF5, es una fuente le luz usada para localizar rupturas y
malas conexiones en cables de fibra óptica. El operador simplemente mira a lo largo
del cable y en el punto donde se vea luz, será donde se lacalice el fallo. El VFF5, está
equipado con un diodo de alta potencia, trabajando en la frecuencia de la luz visible
(670nmts.), pudiendo eperar de dos formas: Modo Continuo (CW) ó Modo
Modulado (MOD 1 Hz). Un diodo LED en la carcasa exterior, indicará el modo selec-
cionado. El VFF5, está fabricado en el interior de una carcasa metálica de tamaño
bolsillo de alta resistencia y operando por medio de milas alcalinas.
Le détecteur de pannes VFF5 est une source lumineuse servant à détecter des rup-
tures ou des connections défectueuses dans les câbles optiques. L’utilisateur obser-
ve une longueur de câble, et là ou il détecte de la lumière se trouve la rupture. Le
VFF5 est équipé d’une diode laser haute puissance de 370nm qui fontionne en mode
continu (CW) ou en mode modulé (MOD, 1Hz). Une LED rouge montée dans le boî-
tier réflète le mode de fonctionnement. Le VFF5 est contenu dans un boîtier com-
pacte en métal et est alimenté par pile.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Caution : Never stare into the ST receptacle or the fiber when the VFF5
unit is operating. Output optical power may be hazardous and may
cause permanent damage to the eyes.
Never insert anything into the ST receptacle on the top- end of the VFF5
as damage can result to the output port component and lens.
This instrument is EN 55022:1994 (EN50082-2:1995) certified for
operation in Single Mode & Multi-Mode optical fiber installations.

Vorsicht: Bei eingeschaltetem VFF5, NIE in den ST Verbinder oder
Lichtfaser schauen. Das Laserlicht ist potentiell gefährlich und kann
permanenten Schaden am Auge verursachen.
Nie irgendwelchen Gegenstand in den ST Verbinder einbringen da
dadurch Schaden am Ausgangsschaltkreis und an der Linse entstehen
könnte.
Dieses Gerät ist EN 55022:1994 (EN50082-2:1995) zertifiziert zur
Anwendung mit Single Mode & Multi-Mode Lichtwellenleitern.
E • Avisos y Precauciones
Cuidado: Nunca debe mirar dentro del receptáculo ST o dentro de la
fibra óptica cuando la unidad VFF5 esté operando. La potentia de sali-
da de dicha unidad óptica podria dañar de forma permanente la visión.
No inserte en ningún caso, ningún tipo de objecto en el receptáculo ST
al final de la unidad VFF5, ya que podria dañar alguna de las lentes o
componentes del puerto.
Este instrumento está certificado para poder trabajar en instalaciones
de fibra óptica bajo la normativa EN 55022:1994 (EN50082-2:1995).
F • Avertissements et Précautions
Attention: Ne jamais regarder dans le connecteur ST ou la fibre
optique quand le VFF5 est allumé. La sortie optique peut être dange-
reuse et occasionner des dégâts permanents à l’oeil.
N’insérez jamais un objet dans le réceptacle ST du VFF5 car vous ris-
queriez d’endommager le circuit de sortie et la lentille.
Cet instrument est certifié EN 55022:1994 (EN50082-2:1995) pour uti-

Unpacking
Package includes: VFF5 Visual Fault Finder with dust cap attached;
Protective storage carry pouch; Operating instructions; Two 1.5V AA
alkaline batteries; Lanyard
Battery installation: Turn unit off. Unscrew the end cap at the bot-
tom of the VFF5 and remove any used batteries. Insert the batteries into
the battery compartment such that the negative end (-) is toward the top
and positive end (+) toward end cap. Re-screw the end cap on to the
unit to hold the batteries.

Einsetzen der Batterien: Gerät ausschalten. Endstück des VFF5
abschrauben (und eventuell verbrauchte Batterien entfernen). Batterien
so einbringen, daß die negative (-) Seite nach oben und die positive
Seite (+) nach unten (Endstück) zeigt. Endstück wieder anschrauben.

Instalación de la bateria: Apague la unidad, desenrosque la tapa
posterior y retire las pilas usadas. Inserte las pilas nuevas de forma que
el polo negativo (-), esté orientado hacia la parte anterior del instru-
mento y el polo positivo (+), lo esté hacia la correa. Vuelva a enroscar
la tapa posterior.
F • Désemballage: L’emballage contient le détecteur de pannes
VFF5 avec capuchon attaché, une pochette de protection, les instruc-
tions d’utilisation, deux piles alcaline AA 1,5V et une boucle de sus-
pension.
Installation des piles: Eteignez l’appareil. Dévissez la pièce de fer-
meture à l’extrémité arrière du VFF5 (et enlevez éventuellement les piles
usées). Insérez les piles dans le compartiment de façon à ce que le côté
négatif (-) soit du côté avant et le côté positif (+) du côté arrière.
Revissez la pièce de fermeture.
Operation
Open the ST type dust cap by pressing and rotating the cap counter
clockwise. Insert the fiber ST connector into the VFF5 ST receptacle
and rotate the fiber connector clockwise to fasten it. Slide the On/OFF
button on the unit to either the ON (Continuous) or the ON
(Modulated, Pulsed) mode. In the ON position, the Red LED indicator
will light on or blink respective to the mode selected. If the LED does
not light, check or replace the batteries.
D • Anwendung: Typ ST Schutzdeckel abheben durch andrücken und
im Gegenuhrzeigersinn drehen. Den ST Verbinder des Licht-
wellenleiters in die ST Buchse des VFF5 einbringen und, zum
Verriegeln, im Uhrzeigersinn drehen. Ein/Aus (On/OFF) Schalter auf
ON (kontinuierlich) oder ON (moduliert) stellen. Die rote
LED leuchtet kontinuierlich oder unterbrochen, je nach gewählter
Betriebsart. Bei Nicht-Aufleuchten der LED, Batterien prüfen und even-
tuell ersetzen.

de iluminación (CW) ON ó (MOD) ON . El diodo LED lucirá
de forma permanente o parpadeará según el modo elejido. Si el diodo
no luce, compruebe o cambie las pilas.
F • Utilisation: Ouvrez le couvercle de type ST en pressant et en tour-
nant dans le sens inverse aux aiguilles d’une montre. Insérez le connec-
teur de type ST du câble optique dans le borne ST du VFF5 et tournez
dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre pour le bloquer. Glissez l’inter-
rupteur ON/OFF ou bien sur ON (mode continu), ou bien sur
ON (mode modulé). Dans le mode ON, la LED rouge s’allume en
continu ou clignotte, selon le mode sélectionné. Si la LED ne s’allume
pas, vérifiez et remplacez les piles.
Cleaning
Under normal use, no maintenance is required. Periodic cleaning the
ST connector can be done with a swab and isopropyl alcohol. Gently
wipe the swab on the ferrule face, then, blow dry with air. Never insert
anything into the ST receptacle on the front end of the VFF5 as damage
will result to the output port component or lens.
To protect the optical output port and keep the lens clean always replace
the dust cap when finished using.
D • Reinigung: Bei normaler Betriebsart ist keine Wartung des
Gerätes benötigt. Der ST Verbinder kann periodisch mit einem weichen
Tuch und Isopropyleen Alkohol gereinigt werden. Die Linse vorsichtig
wischen und mit warmer Luft trocknen. Keinen Gegenstand in den
Verbinder einbringen, da dadurch Schaden entstehen könnte.
Um den optischen Ausgang und die Linse zu schützen und sauber zu
halten, nach Gebrauch immer den Schutzdeckel anbringen.
E • Limpieza: Bajo un uso normal, no se necesita mantenimiento
pudiendo limpiar el aparato, mediante un paño suave, mojado en alco-
hol isopropilico. Páselo suavemente por la cara de la férrula y elimine
cualquier resto, soplando aire limpio. Nunca realice esta operación
insertando un objeto (ver precauciones). Para protejer la salida del
puerto óptico y las lentes anexas, ponga siempre la tapa protectora, tan
pronto haya acabado de usar el instrumento.
F • Nettoyage: Avec une utilisation normale, aucun entretien n’est
requis. Le connecteur ST peut être nettoyé périodiquement avec un
tissu doux et de l’alcool isopropylène. Frottez la lentille délicatement et
séchez avec de l’air chaud. N’insérez jamais un objet dans le réceptacle
ST car vous risqueriez d’endommager le circuit de sortie et la lentille.
Afin de protéger le circuit de sortie et de garder la lentille propre,
replacez toujours le couvercle après utilistion.
