SECTION 1
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this manual is to describe the proper installation and operation of the Wegener
Communications®Diamond DX™Messaging Unit.
1.2 UNIT DESCRIPTION
The Wegener Diamond DX unit is a satellite-delivered messaging system whose function is to
store advertising material, or ‘spots,’ during nonuse hours, schedule them, and play them back
during the normal music program. Most of these functions are performed by the network uplink,
but some local recording and playback may be accomplished, if desired.
1.2.1 System Function
Refer to Figure 2-1. A satellite downlink carrier is received by a Wegener Satellite Audio
Receiver (e.g. Wegener 1916 Receiver). The receiver’s output is an audio channel and a control
stream. Within this control stream are embedded instructions to the Diamond DX™to record
advertisement spots and then schedule them for playback. In addition, it supplies updates for the
on-board real-time clock.
Most of the time, the unit passes the audio input straight through to its output. However, during
non-business hours, the audio may contain several advertisement spots. These are stored to a
PCMCIA memory card. Later, per its schedule during business hours, these advertisements are
inserted into the audio output. In addition, local advertisements or announcements may be
recorded using a microphone input and, under network control, scheduled to play back at specific
times. These may also be played back under local control.
1.3 YEAR 2000 COMPLIANCE STATEMENT
Muzak recognizes concerns for the effect of date interpretation beyond year 1999. The two-digit
year date format commonly used in the world’s computer systems was avoided in favor of the
four-digit format for Muzak’s Satellite Addressable Control System. All Muzak satellite
receivers include no date logic and therefore will not be affected. The Diamond DX messaging
unit does in fact operate within date limits, but has been designed to follow the four-digit
standard. Therefore, they also will be unaffected by the date interpretation issues.
