VALVE INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS
!Thedesignofthepipingsystemmustprovideadequatepressureandtemperatureprotectiontoprevent
exceeding the limits of the valve.
!Flanged Piping Connections
CMake sure that the valve orientation is correct and install the valve in-line with the flanges. Make
sure that the piping flanges are properly positioned and spaced. Do not force the piping in order to
fit the valve. Do not use the flange bolting to pull the piping into the proper position.
CInstall the gaskets and the bolting, and torque per ANSI or API requirements.
CRe-torque the flange closure bolts after the first exposure to elevated temperature.
!Make sure that the valve cycles and operates correctly after installation.
VALVE OPERATION PRECAUTIONS
!Do not exceed the pressure/temperature limits of the valve.
!Do not lubricate the valve. Use of lubrication or sealants may void the warranty or cause pre-mature
failure of the valve.

VALVE MAINTENANCE PRECAUTIONS
!Do not loosen any fasteners or attempt to removal the valve from the line until all pressure is isolated
and released from the system, with valve halfway closed to release the body cavity pressure.
GENERAL OPERATING LOCATION PRECAUTIONS
!This manual covers equipment for use under the following atmospheric conditions:
CAn oxygen concentration not greater then 21 percent by volume
CA nominal barometric pressure of one atmosphere
!During and after operation, all of the valve components are hot. Touching hot components can cause
painful injury.
!Use only authorized replacement parts or hardware.
!Observe proper Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures when working on the valve and makesure that person-
nel protection equipment such as electrical grounds are installed.
!Make sure that all of the electrical wiring is properly terminated. Make sure that all of the wire terminals
are securely connected.
!Avoid hazardous voltage situations that can result from unsafe conditions such as, but not limited to
the following:
CImproper grounding
CHandling electrical leads or devices with wet hands or on wet ground
CDamaged electrical wire insulation
CImproper connection or re-connection of the power terminals.
CShort circuits to ground
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF HIGH PRESSURE COMPRESSED GAS SYSTEMS
!Protect all gas lines from damage or puncture. Do not operate the valve if a gas leak is detected – this
could indicate a loose or damaged high pressure fitting.
!Do not use flammable solvents for cleaning parts.
!Check for tools, rags, or loose parts left in the area before resuming operation.
!Do not attempt to remove the valve from the system without first isolating it from the line pressure and
venting all of the trapped internal pressure.

INTRODUCTION
1. Purpose of Manual
A. This technical manual contains instructions for operation and shop maintenance of the Gas
Vent Valve (valve). This manual is intended to provide information in sufficient detail to permit
proper fault isolation, maintenance, and repair of the equipment.
B. The valve operates as a component of a fuel metering system to control delivery of natural gas
to a gas turbine engine. Refer to Table 1 for system specifications/characteristics.
2. Revision Service
This manual will be revised as necessary to show the current information.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Description and Operation (See Figure 1)
A. Part Numbers C422425 and C422685
The Gas Vent Valve is a solenoid operated poppet shutoff valve. The valve is normally spring-
loaded to its open position. When the solenoid is energized, the solenoid plunger overcomes
the spring force to close the valve. Refer to Figure 2 for the electrical schematic diagram. Refer
to Table 2 for the characteristics and specifications.

The Gas Vent Valve is a solenoid operated poppet shutoff valve. The valve is normally spring-

The valve is equipped with a position indicating switch that is actuated by the solenoid plunger.
When the valve is in its closed position, the switch circuit is closed.

INSTALLATION
1. General
This section contains information on installation and interfacing of thegas vent valve. Refer toFigure
3 for key dimensions.
2. Inspection
Prior to installation, visually inspect the valve for shipping damage and general condition. Make sure
that there are no missing parts, loose fittings or fasteners, or any other obvious defects.

Make sure that the electrical power is off before removing the
terminal cover or touching the electrical wires.

3. Gas Inlet and Outlet Ports
The gas inlet and gas outlet connection ports are internally threaded 1/2-14 ports.
4. Electrical Wiring
A. To gain access to the terminal block, remove the screws and washers and the terminal cover.
B. The electrical wiring entry into the terminal housing must be accomplished using methods ap-
proved by the local certification agencies (i.e., Cenelec, CSA, FM, etc.). Connect the conduit
to the 1/2-14 NPT conduit/entry port for using a suitable conduit connector. Torque the conduit
connector to 450 to 500 pound-inches (51 to 56 Nm).
C. All customer field wiring conductors must be 18 AWG minimum.

D. Connectthefieldwiringforthesolenoid andposition indicatingswitch(whenapplicable)totheir
assigned terminals on the terminal block. Torque the wire terminal screws to 7 to 10 pound-
inches (0,8 to 1,1 Nm). Install an approved stopping block within 18 inches of the conduit entry
port.
E. Re-install the terminal cover with the screws and washers. Tighten the screws to 70 to 90
pound-inches (8 to 10 Nm).
F. Connect the grounding wire and torque the grounding terminal bolt to 35 to 40 pound-inches
(4 to 4,5 Nm).
5. Adjustments
No field adjustments are required.

FAULT ISOLATION
1. General
Make sure that the electrical power is off before removing the
terminal cover or touching the electrical wires.

This section contains specific checks required to fault isolate the gas vent valve during service. It is
assumed that the valve has been reported inoperative or has malfunctioned during operation.
2. Fault Isolation
A. Make sure that the electrical power is turned off and locked out.
B. Remove the screws and washers securing the terminal cover to the terminal housing, and re-
move the terminal cover.
C. Verify the electrical connections at the valve and the field wiring are correct. Refer to Figure 2
for the electrical schematic diagram.
D. Make sure that all of the wiring connections are secure and that there are no damaged wires.
E. If the wiring connections are all correct and secure, and the valve still will not operate, perform
isolation in accordance with the following paragraphs.
3. Solenoid Coil Resistance
A. Disconnect the wires connected to terminals 1 and 2.
B. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2. The resistance must
be 17 to 21 ohms.
C. If the resistance is not within the specified range, the solenoid coil is damaged. Replace the
valve. Return the failed valve to Whittaker Controls for repair.

4. Valve Position Indication Faults (Part Numbers C422425 and C422695 Only)
A. Disconnect the wires connected to terminals 3 and 4.
B. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals 3 and 4. There must be an open
circuit path when the valve is de-energized.
C. If the position indication circuit path is complete (continuity), the position indicating switch has
failed. Return the faulty valve to Whittaker Controls for failure analysis, overhaul and proper
testing to certification.
5. Operation
A. If no faults are found in the preceding paragraphs, reconnect the field power input wiring to
terminals 1 and 2.
B. Apply 24 VDC electrical power between terminals 1 and 2. The valve should actuate open or
closed, depending on whether it as a normally open or normally closed valve (refer to Table 1
or Figure 2). If possible, verify that the valve position and flow status are correct.
C. If operation is not normal, return the faulty valve to Whittaker Controls for failure analysis, over-
haul and proper testing to certification. If operation is correct, proceed with the following steps.
D. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals 3 and 4. There must be continuity
when the valve is energized.
E. If the position indication circuit path is open (no continuity), the position indicating switch has
failed. Return the faulty valve to Whittaker Controls for failure analysis, overhaul and proper
testing to certification.
F. Turn off and lock out the electrical power.
G. If no faults are found, the valve is operating correctly and may be returned to service.
H. If the valve is to be returned to service, re-install the terminal cover and secure it with the
screws and washers. Tighten the screws securely.
