OPERATORS
Dear Heating System Owner,
We would like to congratulate you on your new environmentally friendly heating system. With the purchase of this
high-quality product by Windhager, you have selected a system that provides more comfort and optimised fuel consump-
tion while utilising an environmentally friendly means of saving resources. Your boiler was manufactured under strict
ISO 9001-certified standards, was subjected to extensive tests and all the components are recyclable.
On the following pages we have provided specific information and important tips regarding system operation, unit
functions and cleaning. Familiarity with the information in this document will allow you to enjoy long-term operation
of the boiler. We wish you all the best with your Windhager boiler!

Operation of the boiler together with the InfoWINTouch display and operating unit is described in a se-
parate InfoWINTouch operating manual. Please pay close attention to these instructions. Familiarity with
the material in this document will allow you to enjoy long-term operation of the boiler. We wish you all the
best with your Windhager boiler.
1. General information
These instructions are aimed at both users of the unit and qualified contractors.
Note.
Read these instructions carefully before using the appliance and retain them for future reference.
Pass on the instructions to a new user if required.

1.5 Software
The software for the firing automates uses FreeRTOS. You can find the FreeRTOS source code as well as its licensing
terms on the website www.FreeRTOS.org.
1.6 Rating plate and serial number (barcode)
The rating plate and serial number (barcode) contain important specifications relating to the unit, such as its type,
factory number and year of manufacture. If you need a spare part or have to contact Windhager Customer Service or
your customer service partner due to a malfunction, please first make a note of this data from the rating plate. The
rating plate is located on the front of the equipment, behind the cladding door – Fig. 2.

2. Safety
The boiler together with its accessories complies with the latest state of the art as well as the relevant safety regu-
lations, and is operated with electric current (230/400 V AC). Improper installation or repair can pose the danger of
life-threatening electric shock. Installation is to be performed by appropriately qualified technicians only.
2.1 Manufacturer's obligations
Our products are manufactured in accordance with the essential requirements of the various applicable guidelines. They
therefore carry the label and are supplied with all the required documentation.
Technical details subject to change.
We as the manufacturer cannot be held liable in the following cases:
–Incorrect use of the boiler and fuel feed.
–Failure to perform proper maintenance on the boiler and fuel feed.
–Incorrect installation of the boiler and fuel feed.
2.2 Installer's obligations
The installer is the person responsible for installing the boiler. The installer must comply with the following instructions:
fRead and follow all instructions supplied with the boiler.
fCarry out installation in accordance with the applicable standards and specifications.
fExplain to the operator how the system works.
fMake the operator aware of his obligation to inspect and maintain the boiler and fuel feed.
fHand over all operating manuals to the operator.

2.3 Operator's obligations
To ensure that the system gives optimum service, the operator must follow these instructions:
fOnly adults who have received instruction from Windhager Customer Service or a customer service partner may
operate the system.
fThe operator must have read and understood the instructions contained in the documentation.
fInstallation and initial start-up must be performed by appropriately qualified technicians.
fMake sure the installer explains how the system works.
fPerform all the necessary checks and maintenance.
fKeep the instructions in good condition and store them near the boiler.
DANGER Injury
This boiler – including the fuel feed – is not intended for use by persons (including children) who have phy-
sical or mental disabilities or sensory impairments or who have no experience or knowledge of the correct
use of the boiler, unless supervised or trained by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be
supervised to ensure they do not play with the boiler.
2.4 General safety information
DANGER Injury
When performing cleaning or repair work, turn off the main switch!
For safety reasons, the main system switch must always be turned off and secured with a padlock to prevent
unauthorised start-up (Fig. 3) in the following situations: before performing cleaning or repair work; before
opening doors, cladding and covers concealing electrical and moving parts; and before entering the room
conveyor system area (which contains rotating parts).
If serious faults or defects occur during operation, you must shut down the system immediately via the main
switch of the heating system, secure it with a padlock to prevent switch-on and notify a qualified technician.

fIf you have to touch these parts, always de-energise the boiler first.

3. Sources of danger
3.1 Power failure (or if the fan is not running)
WARNING risk of deflagration!
Do not open the combustion chamber door or ash chamber door because of the increased risk of deflagration.
Following a power failure, a self-test is performed during combustion and then operation resumes automati-
cally.
3.2 Combustion air
Never seal openings that have been provided for letting air in and out!
The boiler room must be ventilated directly from the external environment. The openings and air ducts must be designed
to prevent the air flow rate from being detrimentally affected by the weather (leaves, snow drifts, etc.) in any way.
3.3 Entering the fuel storage room, storage container
All energy sources are subject to safety regulations which must be observed when working with fuels, heating systems
and storage rooms. This also applies to the storage of wood chips and pellets.
Pellet storage may only be entered in compliance with the safety measures – see section 3.3.1.
DANGER Injury
Keep children away from the fuel storage room
There is a risk of hollow dome-like spaces forming above the mixer, particularly in the case of wood chip fuel
stores. If children are allowed to play on the wood chip pile, it could collapse and they could become trapped,
or even get caught in the auger. The same applies to careless adults.
DANGER Risk of suffocation
Do not attempt to enter an unventilated storage room.
DANGER Injury
Please also follow the instructions on the pellet storage room safety notice!
Keeping the storage room locked
After the storage room is filled, odourless carbon monoxide (CO) may be produced and there may be insufficient oxygen
present. For this reason, do not enter the pellet storage room for 4 weeks after it has been filled. Only persons trained for
working in confined spaces may enter the storage room for the purpose of measuring gas levels before any work is carried
out. (See HSE bulletin number OPSTD 3-2012 entitled - Storage of wood pellets: Risk of death from carbon monoxide.

3.3.1 Safety measures in accordance with DIN EN ISO 20023
fThe pellet boiler must be switched off.
fSufficient ventilation must be ensured before entering the store.
fA supply of fresh air must be ensured during the time present in the store. The pellet storage must be ventilated for
at least 15 minutes before entering (e.g. by cross ventilation through the access door or hatch). The access opening
must remain open and ventilation must be maintained while persons are working in the pellet storage.
fPellet storage may only be entered when accompanied by a second person who remains outside the danger zone as
an additional safety precaution. The accompanying person should always be able to see or be in earshot of the per-
son in the store. This makes it easier to initiate a rescue in an emergency. In the event of an emergency, the second
person must get help and must NOT enter the pellet storage. Persons entering a pellet storage are to be familiar with
the dangers and safety measures.
Pellet storage with up to 15 t of pellets
After the storage room is filled, odourless carbon monoxide (CO) may be produced and there may be insufficient oxygen.
For this reason, do not enter the pellet storage room for 4 weeks after it has been filled, or only after measuring the gas
levels of the air in the storage room for CO in advance.
After the 4-week period, continuous natural ventilation of the pellet storage (ventilation cover/ventilation opening)
and cross ventilation 15 minutes before entry is in principle sufficient to achieve a CO exposure level of ≤60 ppm for
an exposure duration of 30 minutes.
Pellet storage with over 15 t of pellets and/or buried tank
Pellet storage may only be entered after measuring the gas levels of the air in the storage room for CO in advance. If
the CO concentration has not dropped to the prescribed threshold after 15 minutes of cross ventilation, a ventilator
(e.g. vacuum cleaner) is to be used.
While in the pellet storage, persons are to carry a personal CO detector set to an upper alarm threshold of 60 ppm at
all times. The lower alarm threshold should be set to 30 ppm if the detector provides such a function.
Entering the pellet storage for a short time (maximum 30 minutes) is only recommended if the CO concentration in the
pellet store is ≤60 ppm. At CO concentrations of >60 ppm, the storage room must be ventilated until the CO concent-
ration has fallen sufficiently..
Due to the airtight construction, high CO concentrations can occur in buried stores. Therefore, buried stores may only
be entered following sufficient ventilation and measurement of the CO concentration. A second person must be present
outside the store at all times. If national regulations for confined space operations exist, these must be observed;
otherwise, best practices for entering, exiting, and working in stores must be followed.

4. Permitted types of fuel –Important information!
Small-scale combustion systems up to approx. 100kW require a defined fuel quality that is as consistent as possible to
ensure trouble-free operation and permanently clean combustion.
4.1 Wood chips
CAUTION Material losses
Wood chips as approved fuel only for PuroWIN Type PW 24/30/40/49/60/72/83/99/103 – see rating plate
item 1.6 for type.
Since 2014, the classification of wood chips has been defined internationally according to ISO EN 17225-4. This ISO
standard also supersedes ÖNORM M 7133 (e.g.: "G30" and "G50") and EN 14961-4. The following data has been speci-
fied in the standard:
•The size classes
•The max. fine fraction
•The permissible coarse fraction
•The max. particle length and max. cross-sectional area
Because of the many producers and different types of wood, wood chip is a raw material which comes in many different
forms. The PuroWIN is approved for wood chips that conform to EN ISO 17225-4, classes P16S and P31S plus A1
and A2. For ideal system operation, wood chips with a water content of 20–30% should be used. The effects of any
deviations from this guideline should be taken into account.

Demolition wood and chemically treated wood (e.g. glue, paint, impregnating agents, grown wood treated
with de-icing salt, etc.) are not covered by this international standard.
The use of these fuels can lead to malfunctions and boiler corrosion.
The applicable laws only permit the use of untreated wood without foreign substances for heating purposes.
Short rotation coppice or fuels from crops such as: miscanthus, poplar and willow have a very high potas-
sium content and an ash content of between 3–6%.
The combustion of waste is not permitted.

4.2 Additional information regarding fuel
a) The amount of ash depends on the fuel!
Wood chips with a low proportion of bark have an ash content of approx. 0.5%.
Wood chips from short-rotation coppice, such as miscanthus and poplar, have an ash content of 3–6%.
Bark, fine fraction, small branches and needles increase the ash content.
In addition, impurities (soil in the bark, sand, stones, etc.) in the fuel can reduce the ash melting point, resulting in the
ash sintering. This solid ash residue is referred to as slag.
A high ash content and the formation of slag prevent the system from operating efficiently, as they result in shorter
maintenance intervals for the boiler.
b) Wet wood chips!
Simple to identify using the "hand test"
•If the wood chips are dry to touch, the water content will be below 25%
•If the wood chips feel wet, the water content will be over 35%
A water content above 30% has a highly detrimental effect on the wood chips’ suitability for storage. It results in increa-
sed self-heating (risk of fire) and the wood chips also start to mould (health hazard, allergies) and decompose (decay
= energy loss).
c) Dry wood chips!
When the tree is felled, it has a water content of approx. 50%.
With air-dried wood chips, a water content of 20–30% is achieved in practice.
If the wood is dried for a very long period of time, the lowest values are approx. 15%.
The combustion process has been designed for this range.
If the wood chips are also "industrially dried", values below 10% can also be achieved. In such cases, the boiler tends
to "pulsate" when combustion starts. The combustion state only normalises again in the "Modulation" operating phase.
d) Old wood!
In the case of old wood, it is important to consider the wood’s current energy content and to ensure that it is free from
pollutants.
If the wood is already rotten or has been chemically treated, it must not be used. If the wood chips are dark brown, very
light and already brittle, they no longer have any energy and are deemed to be "compost".

4.3 Pellets
CAUTION Material losses
Pellets as approved fuel only for PuroWIN pellet boiler type PWPE 60/75/90/100 – see rating plate item
1.6 for type.
Quality of pellets must be in accordance with EN ISO 17225-2 A1:
The quality of the pellets is an important factor in achieving optimum operation of the heating system.
When buying pellets, make sure that they meet the quality standards of EN ISO 17225-2 A1. Only source pellets from
manufacturers with EN-Plus certification (or DIN-Plus or UZ38), as they are required to perform ongoing internal quality
control.
Diameter: 6 mm; length: 10 – 40 mm; max. 1% up to 45 mm
Make your pellet supplier aware of these quality requirements before ordering and seek confirmation upon delivery.
Consequences of quality fluctuations:
Pellets are 100 % unprocessed wood, so minor fluctuations in fuel quality are normal and reflect the natural origins of
the material. These quality fluctuations affect the level of contamination, the ash content and therefore the cleaning
intervals.
A reduction in cleaning intervals due to fluctuations in pellet quality cannot be remedied as part of a repair under war-
ranty.
5. Filling the fuel storage room – STORAGE ROOM WITH MIXER

5.1 IMPORTANT general information about filling
–Only fill the store with the type of fuel permitted under Section 4. A mixture of wood chips/pellets is not permitted.
–Before filling the fuel store, visually inspect the conveyor system for any signs of damage or foreign bodies.
–The fuel store should always be filled well before the mixer inside the fuel store becomes visible. The fuel storage
room can then be filled up to the maximum permissible filling height (see Section 5.2).
–If the mixer is already visible, the mixer must be made to rotate during filling so that the fuel storage room can be
filled up to the maximum permissible filling height (see Section 5.2) without damaging the mixer. Alternatively, you
can fill the fuel storage room up to a maximum filling height of 1metre without making the mixer rotate. After that,
you can use the "Fill storage room" function (see PuroWIN InfoWINTouch operating manual) to put the boiler and
mixer into operation so that the mixer starts rotating. You must wait for the display to indicate that the "Fill stora-
ge room" process has been "Released" before you continue filling the store up to the maximum permissible filling
height (see Section 5.2).

Note!
Pneumatic feed: The display can only indicate that the "Fill storage room" process has been "Released" if the
integral fuel hopper is empty. Consequently, the integral fuel hopper must be emptied first so that the fuel
feed can be activated and the mixer can start rotating.
–The fuel store has to be filled slowly. Using a tipper lorry to drop large quantities of fuel onto the mixer abruptly can
damage the mixer.
5.2 Maximum filling height in the fuel store
Wood chips:
For wood chips, the maximum filling height is 5 m. This corresponds to the maximum permissible load on the mixer in
the fuel store.
In the case of wood shavings, the filling height also depends on the size of the fuel store to ensure that bridge formation
is prevented.
The following formula applies:
Length + width of fuel store / 2 = filling height
For example: (4 m + 3 m) / 2 = 3.5 m; as a result, the maximum permissible filling height is 3.5 metres.
If the result exceeds 5 m, the maximum limit of 5 m still applies.
5.3 Initial filling for start-up
Observe the following instructions when filling from the fuel store for the first time!
Throughout the storage room, the fuel must be evenly applied and distributed below the level of the compound spring.
This creates an artificial sloping floor and prevents blockages at the mixer – Fig. 5.
CAUTION Material losses
For initial start-up, the floor-mounted mixer may only be filled with a small quantity of fuel so that it is roug-
hly 10 to 20cm deep above the rotary plate. This enables optimum checking of the fuel feed to ensure it is
functioning correctly.

5.5 Open (pressureless) fuel store, PuroWIN with direct auger or
pneumatic feed
When filling the fuel store, always start from the centre of the mixer. This gets the compound springs into the optimum
transport position as quickly as possible.
CAUTION Material losses
Never drive on or over the mixer.
5.5.1 Filling a partially empty storage room
If the mixer is still completely covered by fuel, the storage room can be filled up to the maximum permissible filling
height without making the mixer rotate (see Section 5.2). If the mixer is visible, the filling process must be carried out
as described in Section 5.5.2.

5.5.2 Filling the storage room when it is empty or when the mixer is visible
If the storage room is empty or the mixer is visible, the mixer must be made to rotate during filling so that the fuel
storage room can be filled up to the maximum permissible filling height (see Section 5.2) without damaging the mixer.
Fill the fuel storage room slowly.
CAUTION Material losses
If an empty storage room is filled without making the mixer rotate, the mixer may be damaged. No warranty
claims will be accepted for damage attributable to incorrect filling!
PuroWIN with direct auger
Alternatively, you can fill the fuel storage room up to a maximum filling height of 1metre without making the mixer
rotate. After that, you can use the "Fill storage room" function (see PuroWIN InfoWINTouch operating manual) to put
the boiler and mixer into operation so that the mixer starts rotating. You must wait for the display to indicate that the
"Fill storage room" process has been "Released" before you continue filling the store up to the maximum permissible
filling height (see Section 5.2).

5.6 Closed fuel store, filled via filling/return air pipe, PuroWIN with
direct auger
During filling/extraction, negative pressure is created in the storage room and this can cause flue gas discharge from
the boiler or burn-back.
DANGER Injury
To prevent negative pressure from being generated in the boiler, the maintenance cover on the transfer block
of the room conveyor system must be opened when blowing in the fuel (Fig.17) and left open throughout the
entire filling process.

5.6.1 Filling a partially empty storage room
Once the maintenance cover on the transfer block has been opened, the boiler enters burnout mode, i.e. the boiler is
not in operation and the feed is switched off.
If the mixer is still completely covered by wood chips, the storage room can be filled up to the maximum permissible
filling height without making the mixer rotate (see Section 5.2). If the mixer is visible, the filling process must be carried
out as described in Section 5.6.2.

5.6.2 Filling the storage room when it is empty or when the mixer is visible
Once the maintenance cover on the transfer block has been opened, the boiler enters burnout mode, i.e. the boiler is
not in operation and the feed (mixer) is switched off.
The fuel store may only be filled up to a maximum filling height of 1 metre without making the mixer rotate.
Before you fill the store up to the maximum permissible filling height from the initial height of 1 metre (see Section
5.2), you must make the settings for blowing in the fuel. Make sure you close the maintenance cover again and use the
"Fill storage room" function (see PuroWIN InfoWINTouch operating manual) to put the boiler and mixer into operation
so that the mixer starts rotating. You must wait for the display to indicate that the "Fill storage room" process has been
"Released" before you reopen the maintenance cover (which is mandatory) and continue the filling process by blowing
in fuel up to the maximum permissible filling height (see Section 5.2). Then close the maintenance cover again and clear
the alarm message on the boiler display.

Before filling the pellet storage room or storage container, check the following
DANGER Risk of suffocation
The storage room/storage container may only be entered in compliance with the safety measures. Entering
unventilated storage rooms (particularly buried tanks) requires more stringent measures – see section 3.3.1
Safety measures in accordance with DIN EN ISO 20023 on side 9.
DANGER Risk of explosion
If you are using electrical cleaning devices (industrial vacuum cleaners), the following explosion protection
requirements must be met (primarily relating to explosion protection inside the cleaning devices):
fthere must be no internal ignition sources;
fand protection class IP 54 in accordance with IEC 60529 must be demonstrated.
fWhether the storage room is free of foreign bodies > remove foreign bodies.
fWhether a lot of dust has settled on the floor over time > remove dust.
Please note: A layer of dust on top of the pellets is normal because the dust that is present migrates to the surface
when the pellets gush out during removal.
fWhether pellets have swelled up against the wall if the storage room is not fully dry > remove pellets.

Fuel delivery should be performed in accordance with EN-Plus standard with the delivery driver adequately
trained to deliver biomass wood pellets.
