1.0 Signal Words & Definitions
Throughout this manual there are several safety messages that must be read and
adhered to in order to prevent possible loss of equipment and/or personal injury and/or
loss of life. The three signal words are “Danger”, “Warning” and “Caution”. They are
used to indicate the severity of the hazard and are preceded by a safety alert symbol.
“Danger”
Denotes the most serious injury hazard and is used when
serious injury or death WILL result from misuse or failure to
follow the specific instructions set forth in this manual.
“Warning”
Denotes when serious injury or death MAY result from
misuse or failure to follow the specific instructions set forth

“Caution”

2.0 Introduction

the installation and/or operation and/or maintenance of the
product described herein. Without access to this information,
faulty installation, operation and/or maintenance may occur,
which could result in equipment damage, personal injury and

assembled will require the use of alternate methods.

2.1 Product Description
The PPD is a multi-pump drive that attaches to the engine similar to a power-take off and
distributes the power to one or two heads. Each head has the possibility to mount two pumps.
With a flange adapter, a Type D, 4-hole mount is available. On the engine side flange, there are
Type B, 2-hole, and Type C, 2- and 4-hole mounting pads.
The input is connected to the flywheel of the engine through an elastic coupling which is
connected to the main shaft and consequently to the gears. On the output shaft a flywheel is
available. Thus, any equipment with SAE sizes 0 through 3 meeting J617 and SAE 11.5”through
18” meeting J620 can be installed.
When ordering replacement parts, use the part numbers from the Bill of Material and drawing
supplied with the brake. The most current documents may be obtained by contacting WPT or
an authorized distributor. When ordering parts, provide the assembly number and serial number
for the unit found on the brass tag affixed to the front of the brake. See the example shown in
the figure immediately below.

4.0 Installation
Warning
Follow safety guidelines utilizing lockout tag out procedures
before and during all installation and maintenance procedures.
Warning
Ensure that proper rated lifting devices & procedures are
followed when installing, working, or maintaining unit. Failure to
do so may result in equipment damage, personal injury and even
death.
Caution
Even though the units are properly set before shipment from the
factory, they should be checked for proper endplay before being
put into operation. See Section 6.4 for detailed instructions on
setting endplay.
Warning
Use only the proper quantity and grade of fasteners shown in the
drawings. Failure to do so may result in fastener failure and/or a
reduction in unit torque.

4.1 Requirements for Proper Operation and Service Life
Flywheel and flywheel housing alignment inspection.
It is strongly recommended that dial indicator checks be made (as shown) prior to installation of the Pump
Drive, especially on new engines or when a previous Pump Drive failure
might indicate an alignment problem.
4.1.1 Check flywheel to housing face run out.
Mount the indicator base on the face of the flywheel and position the dial indicator tip
perpendicular to the flywheel housing mounting face. Rotate the flywheel 360 degrees while
holding pressure against the crankshaft thrust bearing. The total indicator reading should
not exceed:
SAE #3 Housing: 0.008 inches (0.20 mm)
SAE #2 Housing: 0.009 inches (0.23 mm)
SAE #1 Housing: 0.012 inches (0.30 mm)
SAE #0 Housing: 0.016 inches (0.41 mm)
4.1.2 Check flywheel housing bore run out.
Mount the indicator base on the face of the flywheel and position the dial indicator tip so its
movement is perpendicular to the pilot bore of the flywheel housing. Rotate the flywheel
360 degrees. The total indicator reading should not exceed:
SAE #3 Housing: 0.008 inches (0.20 mm)
SAE #2 Housing: 0.009 inches (0.23 mm)
SAE #1 Housing: 0.012 inches (0.30 mm)
SAE #0 Housing: 0.016 inches (0.41 mm)

4.1.3 Check flywheel face run out.
Mount the indicator base on the flywheel housing and position the dial indicator tip so its
movement is perpendicular to the face of the flywheel. Position the indicator tip near the
drive ring mounting bolt circle diameter. Rotate the flywheel 360 degrees while holding
pressure against the crankshaft thrust bearing. The total indicator reading should not exceed:
11” Clutch: 0.007 inches (0.18 mm)
14” Clutch: 0.009 inches (0.23 mm)
18” Clutch: 0.011 inches (0.28 mm)
4.1.4 Check flywheel pilot bore run out.
Mount the indicator base on the flywheel housing and position the dial indicator tip so its
movement is perpendicular to the face of the pilot ring inner diameter on the flywheel.
Rotate the flywheel 360 degrees. The total indicator reading should not exceed:

4.2 Installing the Unit
4.2.1 Mount driving ring of the elastic coupling on the flywheel.
NOTE
Before mounting the PPD onto the engine, it is important to
check that flywheel is within SAE tolerances (see 4.1).
Following the provided technical specifications is recommended
for increased product life and safe operation.

vibration analysis. Especially
when the driven machine is
equipped with an additional
elastic coupling.
NOTICE: Thermal dissipation of the PPD is designed for an ambient temperature of 122°F [50°C]
max. Ambient temperature should be measured at a distance about 7.9-11.8 inch [20-30 cm]. For
ambient temperatures above 122°F [50°C], oil temperatures must be monitored. Design of engine
enclosure must be well vented.

4.2.2 Locate a dial indicator as per Fig. 1 and set it to zero to detect an eventual flywheel
housing deflection.
4.2.3 Mount the PPD on the flywheel housing of the engine keeping in mind to align the teeth
of the elastic coupling in the respective teeth of the driving ring.
To align the PPD housing and flywheel housing, use three threaded rods with adequate lengths,
mounted 120° apart on the flywheel housing.
To perform this operation, lift the assembly. In cases where the group includes a power take-off or
hydraulic coupling, support the assembly adequately to ease alignment.
4.2.4 Carefully release the lifting force and properly shim as shown on Fig. 1 in order keep the
dial indicator at zero. If indicator changes after bolts are tightened, re-shim until indicator
remains at zero.

4.2.5 Mount the pumps on the heads, inserting the respective adapters for type B or C. For type
B, a reducing ring with respective O-rings are required. For type D (non-engine side only)
an adapter flange is required to be mounted to the head. Utilize pump manufacturers
recommended grease on both internal and external splines of the adapter
CAUTION
The PPD is supplied without oil.
4.2.6 Fill the unit by removing the breather (vent) plug located near the top center of the pump
drive. Please refer to the Maintenance section on how to properly check the oil level.
CAUTION
ATTENTION: DO NOT OVERFILL.
Excess oil level will cause overheating and foaming.
The approximate oil level volume is 9.25 gallons (35 liters). See approved oils list.
4.2.7 Read pumps and other installed devices maintenance manual to assure proper
lubrication.
4.2.8 Follow a run-in cycle of 15 minutes with the engine at idling speed to ensure correct
lubrication of internal components. Check units to ensure that no oil leaks are present.
CAUTION
4.2.9 After mounting of the pump drive, it is important to verify the pump drive has adequate
shaft end play with a dial indicator, check it in two or three different points in order to
read a mean value. The PPD endplay requirement is between 0.012-0.020 in [0.3-0.5mm]

CAUTION
4.2.10 Thrust applied to any pump drive shaft will cause rapid failure. Every effort should be
taken to prevent axial thrust on all pump drive shafts.
4.2.11 If installing a product which utilizes a pilot bearing to the main output of the pump drive,
it is important to relieve the bearings of any axial force added during installation.

CAUTION
4.2.12 Strike the output end of clutch shaft with a soft face hammer (brass) to relieve bearing
preloading caused by installation, see sketch below (appearance in some models vary).
CAUTION
4.2.13 Torsional vibrations must be managed with proper coupling selection, regardless of its
position in the drivetrain. When not properly dealt with, torsional vibrations can cause
major damage to the machine. Before installing a PPD, contact the equipment
manufacture or WPT to verify the proper analysis has been completed.

4.3 Coupling Replacement
Instructions for replacing an input coupling.
4.3.1 Please refer to the equipment manual for proper steps on how to remove peripheral
items such as belts, guards, etc.
4.3.2 Remove the Power Pump Drive (PPD) assembly from the machine and place on flat,
sturdy work surface.
4.3.3 The PTO, if equipped, does not need to be removed from the PPD. The entire PTO and
PPD assembly may be removed as one.

4.3.4 Remove drive ring coupling from engine flywheel.
4.3.5 Remove the hex head cap screws (Item 4 & 5) from the input splined hub and drive plate.
•Input splined hub will be reused to mount replacement coupling.
4.3.6 Remove SRC input coupling from PPD.
•Use the bolts from step 4.3.5 as jack bolts to assist in removal of hub.
NOTE: Replace old bolts with new bolts when install new coupling.
4.3.7 Assemble the input coupling (items 2 & 3).
4.3.8 Tighten bolts to:
•SRC: Torque the twelve (12) hex head cap screw (item 4), securing the hub and coupling.
Torque 155 lbf•ft. [210 Nm]

4.3.9 Attached new drive ring to the engine flywheel using new hardware.
•Refer to torque chart in the back of the instructions or torque to engine manufactures
recommended setting.
4.3.10 Attach the new coupling to In-put splined hub using the twelve (12) provided hex head cap
screws (item 4).
•Apply 242 Loctite or equal to bolts and tighten evenly in 3 stages securing the hub and
coupling.

4.3.11 Install hardware PPD onto engine ensuring coupling aligns with drive ring.
•Refer to torque chart at the end of the instructions or torque to engine
manufactures recommendation.
4.3.12 Reinstall peripheral items such as belts, guards, etc. per equipment manual.

5.0 Disassembly
Warning

5.1 Remove PTO from Pump Drive
5.1.1 Remove drive shaft or belts from PTO output shaft.
5.1.2 Remove the mounting bolts attaching the PTO to the flywheel housing, remove those
located near the top last. The PTO should separate from the flywheel housing. If the
PTO does not separate, gently pry the flanges apart until the housing is removed from
the engine flywheel housing pilot diameter.
5.2 Remove all Auxiliary Attachments.
5.2.1 Disconnect all hoses from auxiliary pumps/motors.
5.2.2 Remove the mounting bolts from the auxiliary unit to the pump pad, remove those
located near the top last.
5.3 Remove Pump Drive for Disassembly
5.3.1 After all auxiliary attachments have been removed and the PTO has been removed
proceed with the following steps.
5.3.2 Disconnect and remove all hardware from pump drive and engine.
5.3.3 Drain all oil from pump drive by removing drain plug from bottom of unit.
5.3.4 If unit has not been moved to secure clean area do so now.

5.4 Disassembly Main Shaft
5.4.1 Remove “Y” side output flywheel by removing SHCS from center.
5.4.2 Remove hardware holding flange adapter.
5.4.3 Remove hardware to remove bearing carrier.
5.4.4 Remove output main bearing.
5.4.5 On “Z” side remove hardware to remove shaft retainer.
5.4.6 After shaft retainer is removed coupling maybe removed.
5.4.7 Remove hardware to remove input housing.
5.4.8 The main shaft may be removed from the output side.
5.4.9 You must separate the main sprocket from input bearing before either may be
removed from housing.
5.5 Disassembly Intermediate Shaft Driving
5.5.1 Remove “Y” side output intermediate hardware to remove cover.
5.5.2 With input housing removed remove spacer.
5.5.3 Once spacer is removed you may remove bearing.
5.5.4 With bearing removed you may pull intermediate shaft out freeing up output bearing.
5.6 Disassembly Intermediate Shaft Driven
5.6.1 From “Z” input side remove retaining hardware running through shaft.
5.6.2 Pull shaft out from housing on input side.
5.6.3 With head or head cover removed you may remove sprocket and bearing through head
opening to disassembly further.
5.6.4 Remove hardware holding retainer plate from each side if sprocket.

6.0 Assembly
6.1 Prepare and Install Main Shaft Assembly
6.1.1 Press the main shafts output seal into the main shafts output bearing carrier. Press until
flush with the front face.
6.1.2 Install the large main shaft bearing’s outer race with rollers into the main shaft’s output
bearing carrier.
6.1.3 Mount the output shaft flange to the output shaft, tighten bolts. Do not apply Loctite or
install O-ring at this time.
6.1.4 Heat (170°F ± 20°F)/demagnetize and install the inner race of the bearing and install it on
the output shaft until firmly against the output shaft flange.
***DIRECTION IS CRITICAL, SEE DRAWING FOR REFERENCE***.
6.1.5 Let the shaft and bearing cool, then proceed to the next step.
6.1.6 Remove the output shaft flange.
6.1.7 Drive dowel pins into output end of main shaft.
6.1.8 Insert the main shaft with bearing race into the bearing carrier. See drawing for
orientation.
6.1.9 Lay the main shaft output flange face down onto the table.
6.1.10 Apply thin film of grease to O-ring and install it into the output flange.
6.1.11 Orient the shaft such that the bearing carrier and output end of the shaft are pointing
down.
6.1.12 Lower the bearing carrier and bearing’s outer race with rollers onto the output flange.
6.1.13 Carefully lower the main shaft assembly thru the bearing and onto the output shaft
flange while aligning dowels. Use a soft faced mallet to drive the output shaft flange
onto the dowels, as necessary.
6.1.14 Carefully turn the assembly over, keeping the output flange seated against the shaft.
6.1.15 Install SHSC bolts with Loctite 271 or equal.
NOTE: The Loctite must be applied to the bolt and inside the threaded hole. Follow Table in back of
manual for proper torque.
6.1.16 Install the key for the main gear into the output shaft.

6.1.17 Heat (170°F ± 20°F)/demagnetize and install main shaft gear onto main shaft. Make sure
it is firmly seated against the bearing with a press.
6.1.18 Let the assembly cool, then proceed to the next step.
6.1.19 Heat (170°F ± 20°F)/demagnetize and install the inner race for the main shafts input
bearing, onto the main gear.
NOTE: DIRECTION IS CRITICAL, See drawing for reference.
6.1.20 Let the assembly cool, then proceed to the next step.
6.1.21 Lay the pump drive housing on a table with the output side facing up. It should be
elevated by approximately 4 inches.
6.1.22 Apply a thin film of Loctite 518 or equal onto the face of the housing where the main
shafts bearing carrier will rest. The Loctite must go around and between all holes.
6.1.23 In the area of the oil ports in the output housing/main shaft area, be sure there is not an
excessive amount of sealant as it can block oil ports.
6.1.24 Lower the main shaft assembly into the main housing.
NOTE: Be sure to align the oil ports in the bearing carrier with the oil ports in the main housing.
6.1.25 Install bolts with cam-lock washers to mount the bearing carrier to the housing. Follow
Table in back of manual for proper torque.
6.1.26 Wipe excess sealant.
6.1.27 Roll the pump drive housing over. The input end of the main shaft should now be facing
up.
6.1.28 Install the Outer bearing race with rollers onto the inner race on the input side of the
main shaft.
6.1.29 Cover the exposed bearing to prevent dust and debris from contaminating the bearing.
6.2 Prepare and Install Intermediate Shaft Assembly
6.2.1 Install the complete bearing into the lower housing c-bore. See drawing for
orientation of the inner race.
6.2.2 Install the retaining ring onto the intermediate gear shaft.
6.2.3 Heat (220°F ± 20°F)/demagnetize intermediate gear. At the same time, heat the
previously installed bearing with a torch to 150°F-200°F.
6.2.4 Insert intermediate gear through the side of the housing and place it into position
inside the gearbox.

6.2.5 Using a soft-faced mallet, drive the intermediate shaft into the intermediate and
bearing. Be sure the gear is seated firmly against the retaining ring.
6.2.6 Let the assembly cool.
6.2.7 Heat (170°F ± 20°F)/demagnetize and install the inner race onto the upward facing
end of the intermediate shaft.
6.2.8 Let the assembly cool.
6.2.9 Insert the outer bearing race with rollers into the housing and onto the inner bearing
race.
6.2.10 Insert intermediate shaft spacer.
6.2.11 Cover the exposed bearing to prevent dust and debris from contaminating the
bearing.
6.2.12 Repeat this section in entirety a second time for the second intermediate gear shaft.
6.3 Prepare and Install the Drive Gear Assembly
6.3.1 Assemble gear, end caps, HHCS, cam-lock washers and outer bearing race with
rollers. Follow Table in back of manual for proper torque.
6.3.2 Install the O-ring into the pump drive housings c-bore where the small end of the
shaft will sit once installed.
6.3.3 Lubricate and install the O-ring into the groove in the shaft.
6.3.4 Install the bearing spacer.
6.3.5 Install small separable piece of the bearings inner race. See drawing for orientation.
6.3.6 Install the inner race into the bearing. See drawing for orientation.
6.3.7 Place the gear/bearing assembly into position through the side of the housing.
6.3.8 Align the holes in the center of the parts to prepare for shaft installation.
6.3.9 Install a M12x1.5x200mm SHCS with the head cut off into the tapped hole as an
alignment tool.
6.3.10 Install the shaft. It can be driven in with a soft faced mallet.
6.3.11 Once driven completely in, the shaft shoulder will be in full contact with the bearing.
6.3.12 Remove the alignment rod. Install the HHCS with cam-lock washer. Follow Table in
back of manual for proper torque.
6.3.13 Repeat this section in entirety 4x times total.

6.4 Install Input Housing and Set the Axial Endplay.
6.4.1 Press the seal into the input housing. Press until flush with the machined face.
6.4.2 Make sure the output housing (y-side) is face down on a flat surface.
6.4.3 Install bearing spacer / oil baffle:
6.4.4 Install the Shims.
6.4.5 Install the input bellhousing without use of sealant.
NOTE: Align notch near the seal with oil ports on the input housing.
NOTE: The bolt pattern should only permit this to be installed in one orientation.
6.4.6 Tighten bolts with washers. Applying final torque is not required during this step.
6.4.7 Install the shaft end retaining cap as a temporary fixture.
6.4.8 Lay wooden blocks inside the housing as shown in the picture below.
6.4.9 Install a dial indicator with the base on the inside of the housing and the tip on the
top of the shaft.
6.4.10 Using pry bars, with one on either side, lift and lower the shaft to determine the
endplay.
6.4.11 The endplay should be within the following criteria: between 0.012-0.020 in [0.3-
0.5mm].
6.4.12 If the measured endplay is within the recorded specification, skip to step 6.16. If not,
proceed to the next step.
6.4.13 Remove the input bellhousing.
6.4.14 Remove or add shims, as necessary.
6.4.15 Repeat steps in this section from the beginning. When the endplay requirement has
been met, proceed to the next step.
6.4.16 Remove the input bellhousing.
6.4.17 Apply Loctite 518 between and around each hole on the input housing.
6.4.18 Install the input bellhousing with bolts and washers and torque bolts.
6.4.19 Follow Table in back of manual for proper torque.
6.4.20 Repeat endplay measurement as prior. The endplay should be within specification as
the thickness of the sealant is the only difference. If not within endplay, repeat steps
in this section from the beginning, but with sealant.
