Emprise 7000 Installation and Service Guide 6
Emprise 7000 System Components
The Emprise system includes the following components:
• The Intelligent CONtrol platform (ICON)
• Two system controllers
• Up to 64 Intelligent Storage Elements (ISE)
• One or more host-side Fibre Channel switches for connecting servers to the Emprise
7000 (see http://support.xiotech.com for a list of supported switches)
• Emprise 7000 Storage Fabric (Fibre Channel switches for interconnection of the Emprise
7000 controllers and ISE)
• Emprise 7000 Management Network (Ethernet switches for private Ethernet network)
Emprise 7000 System Packaging
The Emprise system is shipped in at least 5 separate containers:
• The ICON system ships in a large packing box.
• Each system controller ships in a large packing box.
• Each Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) ships in a large packing box.
• A small accessory carton contains the fiber cables and any other items necessary for
installing and operating the Emprise system. Note that the Category 5 (CAT-5) Ethernet
cables are not supplied for iSCSI systems.
When you receive the system, visually inspect the exterior of all packaging. If you see any
damage, contact Xiotech Customer Support at 1.800.734.4716 immediately and they will advise
you of the appropriate action. Use anti-static precautions before removing any of the package
contents. Inspect the system components for damage. If any discrepancy or damage is apparent,
contact Xiotech Customer Support immediately.
Note:
Because the Emprise system components are large and heavy, use a cart to
move the units as close as possible to the location of the rack while they are
still in the packing boxes.
Caution:
If the components have been removed from the packaging, use a grounded
cart.

Emprise 7000 Installation and Service Guide 7
Choosing a Location
Use the following guidelines for choosing a proper location for the Emprise system:
• For optimum air flow and access to system components, choose a location that provides
a minimum of three feet of clearance in the front and the back of the Emprise system.
• Locate the system in a secure and low traveled area where it will not be bumped.
• Keep the Emprise system in a clean, dust-free, and smoke-free environment.
• Provide a climate-controlled environment for the Emprise system. The system will
operate at temperatures from 50-95°F (10-35°C), with relative humidity from 20-80
percent.
• Make sure the location has the proper AC outlet as described in “Power Considerations”
on page 9.
Best Practice:
To ensure that the internal heat build up is properly dissipated into the room
environment, air flow should not be restricted. Do not block any air vents and
make sure the system is a minimum of one meter from walls or partitions. Air
flows through an Emprise system from front to rear.
Caution:
Installing Emprise components in a rack without sufficient air flow can be
unsafe. Install equipment in the rack in such a way that forced air cooling the
equipment does not compromise safety.
Caution:
Install the Emprise system in a location with restricted access to prevent data
loss and/or equipment damage caused by tampering.

Emprise 7000 Installation and Service Guide 8
Installation Requirements
All components of an Emprise system are designed to be installed in a standard 19-inch rack.
Compare the packing slip with your order to verify that all of the components you ordered have
arrived before you begin the installation.
To install the Emprise components, you need the following information:
• Completed Emprise 7000 Site Survey
• Emprise 7000 Configuration Guide (http://support.xiotech.com)
• Dimensional Storage Cluster (DSC) ID, which is located on the license CD
• Network configuration, including the following:
– Gateway address
– DNS
– Time server
–Netmask
– IP addresses for each system controller and ICON
You also need the following equipment, provided by Xiotech:
• Cables (Ethernet and fiber)
• Power cords
• An ICON system serial cable (a tan 9-pin null modem serial cable)
• A system controller serial cable (a tan 9-pin null modem serial cable)
• Screws (#6, #8, #10, 1/4’’)
• A wrist grounding strap
• A fiber cleaning kit
And you need the following equipment of your own:
• A laptop running a terminal emulator
• A Phillips screwdriver (#2 and #3)
• A 11/32 wrench or socket
Note:
You must be a trained Xiotech engineer to install components of an Emprise
system. Contact Xiotech Customer Support at 1.800.734.4716 to schedule an
installation at your location.
Caution:
To reduce the risk of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), wear a grounded wrist
strap while performing these procedures. Put on the anti-static wrist strap and
attach it to a grounded surface such as the exposed metal surface of the
chassis or the rack enclosure. Keep the wrist strap on for the remainder of this
procedure.

Emprise 7000 Installation and Service Guide 9
Power Considerations
Power outlets must be located within 5 feet of an Emprise system and must be easily accessible.
Make sure that each outlet that you use for connecting an Emprise system is an electrically
grounded, isolated circuit.
Using a UPS
While not required, Xiotech strongly recommends the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply
(UPS) for an Emprise 7000 system. Use a UPS that shuts down all server connections before it
shuts down the Emprise system. When server connections are shut down first, all server I/O will
be flushed to disk. Failing to use such a UPS may result in data loss, due to the implementation
of multiple levels of I/O queueing in Emprise.
The Emprise system componentsmust connect to two Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for power
distribution. The PDUs should connect to separate, dedicated power circuits with a UPS at each
end, creating an environment where any single component should not lose power. Losing an
individual component such as an ISE may cause rebuilds. Using separate circuits for redundant
power reduces the occurrence of such rebuilds.
Best Practice:
Xiotech recommends that you connect the Emprise system components to
your corporate uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. Connect each
Power Distribution Unit (PDU) to a separate circuit. Always power down system
controllers before powering down the ISE.
Caution:
If you are using a UPS with automated shutdown, program it to shut down the
servers before terminating power to the Emprise system.
Caution:
Each Emprise component should be connected to a power source with a fuse
or circuit breaker that is greater than the rating of the component. The power
source must also comply with national wiring standards. You must use PDUs
with the Emprise system.
Warning:
When connecting equipment to the supply circuit, check equipment nameplate
ratings to avoid overloading circuits. Overloading circuits may cause damage to
over-current protection devices and supply wiring.
Note:
The loss of an ISE or DataPac is not recognized as a failure unless there is I/O
to the device; therefore, if the servers are no longer sending I/O, and an ISE
loses power before the rest of the Emprise system fails, the ISE will not be
considered failed, and no rebuilds will be initiated. In addition, during the
power-on sequence, a warning will display if any components are missing.

Emprise 7000 Installation and Service Guide 10
Power Implementation
The Emprise 7000 system controllers and ISE have two power supplies. Xiotech requires the
components of an Emprise storage platform to be plugged into two power distribution units (PDU)
on two separate circuits. You can purchase PDUs directly from Xiotech or through an
independent vendor. Xiotech sells the APC PDU for your convenience.
The United States (US) PDU provides 30A (two circuits with 15A). The derated usage value of
the 15A circuit is 12A (80% of rating). The Outside United States (OUS) PDU provides 20A on
one circuit, or 16A (80% of rating). To verify that the components on a circuit do not add up to
more than the derated value for the PDU you are using, refer to the following table.
The following table lists the operating current for the components of an Emprise storage platform.
