QuickStart
ThisUserGuidewill walkyouthroughthemigrationprocess,and provideanswers toquestionsyoumay
havebefore,duringand afterthetransfer.
Introduction
ZinstallHDD isoneoftheZinstall MigrationSuiteproducts.It providesthecapabilitytoupgradefrom
oneharddrivetoanother–migratingtheentiresystem(OS,applicationsoftware,settings,preferences
and data) withouttheneedofanyintermediatemedia.
ZinstallHDD supportsstreamlinedmigrationtothetarget harddrivewhichhas largercapacitythanthe
sourceharddrive.Thereisnoneedtoeitherpre-format orpre-partitionthenew target drivebeforethe
migration.Nomatterhowmanypartitionstheoriginal(source)harddrivehas,andwhat istheactual
sizeofeachpartitionandhowmuchspaceisactuallyoccupiedoneachpartition,Zinstall HDD will
handleall theformattingand partitioningtasks,automaticallyresizingthepartitionsproportionally.
ZinstallHDD usessophisticatedproprietarypatent-pendingalgorithmwhichallowsextra-fast copyingof
theentireharddrivecontent –whichshortensthetimerequiredforthemigration.

Upgrading yourharddrive:
Thisquickguideprovidestheoutlineofupgradinganexistingharddrivetoanew,largerharddrive
using“Zinstall HDD”.Thisisonlyaquickoverview -it isrecommendedtoreferto page8 fora
step-by-stepwalkthrough,and moredetailedexplanations.
1. Turnthecomputeroffand disconnect thepowercordfromtheoutlet.
2. Connect thenew harddrivetoyourcomputer.
3. Turnthecomputeron.
4. IfanInternet connectionisavailable,connect thecomputertotheInternettosimplifyproduct
activation.
5. Beforebeginning,makesureall antivirus/securitysuites/firewallsareuninstalled(orconfigured
toallowZinstalloperationand connections).

6. Install Zinstall HDD.Ifit was purchasedelectronically,downloadZinstallHDD fromthelinkyou
havereceivedintheLicenseInformationemail. IfpurchasedonaCD,install ZinstallHDD from
theCD.
7. Run Zinstall HDD onthecomputer.
8. Whenprompted,enteryourlicenseinformationand activatetheproduct.
9. Onceactivationissuccessful,thecomputerisnolongerrequiredtobeconnectedtothe
Internet.
10. ZinstallHDD willsearchforavailableTARGET harddrives.Oncefound,the“Go” buttonwill
becomeenabled.
11. Makesuretheselectedharddriveisindeedthenew harddriveyouintend touse(either
pre-formattedornot).
12. Press the"Go"buttonwhenready.
13. Whenthemigrationiscomplete,shut thecomputerdown,disconnect thepowercordfromthe
outlet and disconnecttheoldharddrive,toensurethecomputerwill boot fromthenew hard
drivethenext timeit isturnon.
14. Turnthecomputeron.

Preparing forMigration
Before YouBegin
Beforestartingthetransferprocess,it isstronglyrecommendedtoprepareyoursystem
accordingtothefollowingchecklist.Doingsowill ensurethemigrationissuccessfuland isnot
affectedbypossiblesystemissues.
Do thefollowingonyourcomputer:
1. Uninstall/disableall securitysoftware,antivirusorfirewalls.
2. Closeallrunningapplications.
3. It isrecommended–especiallyforoldermachines–toverifyfilesystemconsistencyon
thecomputerbyrunningthestandardWindowsCHKDSKutility.Forfurther
instructions,see page15.
4. IfoneoftheharddrivesisusingtheFAT32filesystem,itisrequiredtoconvertit toNTFSbefore
performingthemigration.Forfurtherinstructions,seepage15.
5. Makesurethereisat least 1GB free spaceoneachharddrive.
Anti-virus / Internetsecuritysoftware
Somereleasesofanti-virus/internet securitysoftwareproductslackaproperidentifying
mechanismand might mistakenlyconsiderZinstall tobeathreat.Zinstall codeisdigitally
signed,accordingtopolicy,byofficialworldwideCertificationAuthority; nevertheless,someof
theanti-virus/internet securitysoftwaremight automatically,and without askingtheuser,
prevent Zinstallfromnormalexecution.It isrecommendedtouninstall anti-virus/internet
securitysoftwarebeforeperformingthemigration.Alternatively,contact thevendorofthe
anti-virus/internet securitysoftware,inordertoget instructionsonhowtoadd Zinstall tothe
“whitelist”ofpermittedsoftware.

Upgrading toanewharddriveusing Zinstall HDD
Theinstructionsbelowexplainhowtoupgradefromanexistingharddrivetoanew,larger
harddriveusing“Zinstall HDD”.
1. Turnthecomputerwhichcontainstheexistingharddriveoff and detachitspowercordfrom
theoutlet
2. Connect thenew harddrivetoyourcomputer
a. It shouldbeconnectedinternallyas asecond harddrive
b. Alternatively,it canbeconnectedusinganexternalenclosure/adapter.Inthiscase,the
afterthemigrationiscomplete,oldharddrivewill bereplacedbythenew one.This
optionisespeciallyusefulwhenupgradingalaptopharddrive.
3. Plugthepowercordbackintotheoutlet andturnthecomputeron
4. Put Zinstall HDD onthecomputer
a. IfZinstallHDD was purchasedelectronically,downloadthesoftwareusingthe
linkfromtheZinstallHDD LicenseInformationemailreceivedafterpurchasing.
b. IfZinstallHDD was obtainedas apackagedCD,theninstall thesoftwarefrom
theCD
5. Run Zinstall HDD
6. InordertoactivateZinstall HDD,youwill beaskedtoentertheregisteredserial
numberand email,as providedbyyouwhentheproduct was purchasedelectronically
overtheInternet.
a. WhenZinstallHDD ispurchasedelectronicallyovertheInternet,theserial
numberisobtainedfromtheLicenseInformationemail,whichissent from
ZinstallSupport uponpurchase.
b. WhenZinstallHDD ispurchasedas apackagedCD,theserialnumberisprinted
onastickerontheCDpackage.
7. Performproduct activationusingyourserialnumber
a. Youneedtosupplytheserialnumberwhenpromptedbythesoftware.

b. It isveryimportant toprovideacorrect email address,otherwiseyoumight
experiencedifficultiesinreceivingsupport –Zinstall Support Systemrecognizes
licensedusers byemailaddress.
8. Entertheserialnumberand emailaddress
a. Ifared“X”appears totherightoftheserialnumber,thismeansthat theserial
numberhas beenaccidentallymistyped.Double-checkall ofthecharacters,
and correctthetypo.
b. Whenyousee agreencheckmark appears totherightoftheserialnumber,
thismeansit has beentypedcorrectly.
9. Press the“Activate”button.An“Activationinprogress”messagewill appear:
a. IfthecomputerisconnectedtotheInternet,theactivationwill beperformed
automaticallyovertheInternet.
b. IfthecomputercannotbeconnectedtotheInternet,theactivationcanbe
performedusinganyotherInternet connection(“offlineactivation”).Ifthisis
yourcase,see page14,WebActivation belowforfurtherinstructions.

10. Afterasuccessfulactivation,thefollowingmessagewillappear:
11. ThecomputerisnolongerrequiredtobeconnectedtotheInternet

c. The“Advanced” buttonallowsalsocontent typefilteringinordertoexclude
certainfiletypesfromthemigration.
14. Press the"Go"buttontostartthemigrationwhenready.

15. Duringthemigrationprocess ZinstallHDD showshowmigrationstagesadvance:

17. Youdonothavetoremainsittingnear thecomputer–theentireprocess maytake
quiteawhile(sometimes,manyhours arerequired).Thisdependsonseveralfactors,
suchas theconditionoftheharddrives,connectiontype(internalorexternal),
connectionspeed,processingpowerofthecomputerand,ofcourse,theamountof
datatobetransferred.

18. IMPORTANT: Do nottouchthecomputers until yousee themigrationiscompleted!
Eveniftheprogress bar doesnot advanceforalongtime,orthecomputer’sdisplay
becomesblack–thisdoesnot meanthecomputerisstuck.Ifthescreenonthe
computerbecomesblack,movethemousetoturnitbackonandsee theprogress.
19. Just bepatient andwait fortheentiremigrationprocess tobecompleted:

WhentheAdvancedbuttonispressed,Zinstall providesseveraladvancedconfigurationoptions
fortweakingand customizingthemigrationprocess.
Filtering outcertaincontenttypes
Severaltypesoffilescanbeexcludedfromthemigration-thismayshortenthemigration
process.Toexcludeacertainfiletype,justchecktheappropriatecheckboxnear theunneeded
filetypecategory:
Choosing migrationsourceandtarget
Thisoptionallowschoosingmigrationsourceand target amongseveralavailablecomputerharddrives,
whenthecomputerhas severaldifferent harddrivepartitionsand/orharddrives.Choosewhichhard
drivesand volumestomigrateonthesourcesystem,and choosethedestinationdriveas aTARGET.

WebActivation
IfacomputerisnotconnectedtotheInternet,Zinstall willbeunabletoactivateitself
automatically.Inthiscase,Zinstallwillprompt youtoperformaWebActivationmanually.
1. OnanycomputerwithanInternetconnection,openabrowser(forexample,Internet
Explorer)
2. Goto www.zinstall.com/activation -It doesn’tmatterwhichcomputeryouuseforthis

ToperformaWindowsCHKDSKharddriveconsistencycheck,and fixpossibleerrors,dothe

1. OpenStartMenu,then"MyComputer"
2. Right clickonyourharddrive,select "Properties"
3. Gotothe"Tools" tab
4. Inthe"ErrorChecking" box,clickon"CheckNow"
5. Makesurebothoptionsarechecked: "Automaticallyfixfilesystemerrors" and "Scan
forand attempt recoveryofbadsectors"
6. ClickStart
7. Ifyouarepromptedtoreboot,accept.
Ifyouhaveseveralharddrives,youneedrun CHKDSKforeachofthem.
ConvertingaFAT32 drivetoNTFSfilesystem

Thismessagecodeappears whenanessentialstandardWindowscomponent iseither
malfunctioningorcorrupted.Althoughsuchmalfunctioning/corruptedcomponent isnot
part ofZinstall software,it needstobefixedinordertoallowproperexecutionofZinstall
withintheWindowsinstallation.Whenthismessageisshown,it alsoincludesdetailed
informationabout thenameofthemalfunctioningcomponent and afailurecodewhich
canbeusedfortroubleshooting.
Troubleshooting:
1. IftheproblemiscausedbyMicrosoftWindowsManagement Instrumentationservice
(WMI)–i.e.Microsoft componentmalfunction–it shouldbefixedbyutilizing

VolumeShadowcopyService(VSS)isaWindowscomponent that allowscreatinga
snapshot ofavolumeinordertocopyit inaconsistentmanner.Formoredetails,see
VolumeShadowCopyServiceOverview.
ZinstallusesVSS onthesourcecomputerinordertocreateaconsistentcopyofall its
disks.IncaseofaVSS problem,Zinstall canstill performthemigration,but thismaycause
issuesinlaterstagesofthemigration,iffilesystemand/orregistryactivityhappenson
thesourcecomputerduringthemigration.
IfZinstallshowsawarningabout VSS,eithercloseall applicationsonthesourcecomputer
inordertolowerthechancesofproblemslateron,orresolvetheVSS problembefore
proceedingwiththemigrationprocess,accordingtothefollowingguide.

Additional notes
TARGETharddriveshouldbelarger thantheSOURCE harddrive
Toallowasuccessfulmigration,makesurethat theTARGET harddriveislargerthantheSOURCE hard
drive.Transferfromalargerharddrivetoasmallerharddriveisnot supported.
Ifyouneedtotransferfromalargerharddrivetoasmallerharddrive(forexample,upgradetoanSSD
drive),considerusingZinstall SSDedition.
Zinstall disappearsafter showing theinitial “Loading…”screen
Thistypeofbehaviormeansthat athird-partyapplicationispreventingZinstall fromrunning. Thisis
usuallycausedbysecuritysoftwarewhichisnotconfiguredcorrectly,andsimplyterminatesZinstall
without evenaskingtheuser.
