HEATING
1. CAUTION - WATER MUST BE FLOWING FROM SHOWERHEAD BEFORE IGNITING AND AT ALL TIMES WHEN HEATER IS ON. Heat OUTDOORS
only in well ventilated area. Turn propane tank gas valve to the “ON” or “OPEN” position. Ensure gas regulator is tight where connected to propane
tank and is not leaking gas.
2. On the X-40 control panel “Push in” the Propane Valve & turn left (so knob points down) while pushing in and holding the ignitor button for 5 seconds.
During ignition it is important to have ignitor depressed and sparking when gas valve is turned on. Keep hands, face, arms and clothing away from top and
bottom of X-40 shower during and after ignition. Always keep top of X-40 heater clear at all times.
3. Feel for HOT air rising from top X-40 heater. If still cool, DO NOT RE-IGNITE. Shut off Propane Valve, wait 1 minute and repeat step 2. If system still fails
to ignite, replace AA battery in ignitor by twisting ignitor cap off, (insert AA battery tip first) or place lit match in hole on side of heater while turning on gas
valve.
4. During heating periods you will see water dripping from bottom of heater - this is condensation and will occur every time the heater is on. Leaking will not
be present before igniting heater, but will occur when heater is on. Heater is NOT leaking, this drip is normal.
5.
CAUTION
- housing gets very hot when heating - keep clear at all times when heating. Do not operate unattended. Do NOT ignite or operate heater
without water flow - water must be freely flowing from showerhead whenever heater is on.
SHOWERING
1. To change water temperature adjust Propane Valve knob on X-40 control panel. Changes will take about 30 seconds to be noticed at showerhead. Do
NOT heat water over 100ºF. The shower hose is extra long so you can stand a safe distance away from the X-40 heater during showering periods. Never
have the shower hose so taut that it may kink or cause the X-40 heater to tip over. If water is not hot enough, turn gas valve to full on (knob points down) or
recirculate water as described on page 2. If water is too hot reduce gas flow by turning gas valve knob slowly to left.
2. If water pressure suddenly drops, immediately turn showerhead away from body, safely turn off heater and allow X-40 heater to cool. Inspect the hoses
for kinks and check pump. Ignite heater only AFTER proper water flow has been regained. Stay clear of initial water flow - it may be hot after re igniting.
3. Never turn off water flow when heater is on. Water must ALWAYS freely flow from showerhead when heater is on. Never use non factory showerhead or
shower hoses. NEVER restrict water flow when heater is on. Do not modify or change showerhead or shower hose in any way.
4. X-40 is now ready for showering - for added convenience see accessories including the zodi shower shelter and shower pole at www.zodi.com.
SHUTDOWN
1. To shutdown, turn off propane gas valve on the X-40 control panel (point and locks in left position) and allow water to continue flowing for 30 seconds.
2. Allow system to cool before handling or storing.
3. After system has cooled position X-40 in covered area to protect system from rain or snow.
4. Drain water from hoses and heating coil.
5. Turn propane valve on top of gas cylinder to “OFF” and remove X-40 regulator from propane tank between uses.
6. In cold environments purge hoses and coil with air to prevent freeze damage.
7. Remove gas cylinder prior to transport.
8. Retract legs and coil hoses before placing in storage bag. Use caution as to not kink shower hose or pump hose when placing in storage bag. Prevent
damage to storage bag and other gear by wrapping X-40 with towel and placing inside plastic bag before storing in gear bag.
CAUTION: Improper use can result in injury or death. Zodi LLC not responsible for improper use.

Low Water Pressure:
Low water pres
sure is usually d
ue to the
power supply
delivering less then 12 volts.
Other common low
water pressure problems include kinked
hoses, vapo
r locked
hoses
,
plugged pump
o
r the shower head being to high
above
pump
.
12 Volt Power:
Check that pump is connected to a good 12 volt
power source (battery or generator). Voltage below 12 volts will
cause the water flow to be reduced.
Kinked Hoses:
Check that pump hose and shower hose
are not kinked. Squeeze kinks from all hoses before use. Do not
use system with kinked hoses.
Vapor Lock:
If pump is workin
he hoses are not kinked, and
water is still not spraying from the shower head, your system is
vapor locked. Vapor lock can be released by applying suction to
the shower head while pump is on and submerged in water
(Heater must be off).
Plugged Pump:
Occasionally the pump will get plugged with
debris in the water - remove pump cap and clean out input area.
Shower Head Height:
The shower hose is 16 feet long for con-
venience around camp. For best water flow keep shower head 6
feet or less above pump. To increase water flow reduce elevation
between showerhead and pump.
Gear Bag as Water Container:
If using padded gear bag as
a water container, it is necessary to first position plastic bag
inside gear bag to hold water. Position pump inside plastic bag
with suction end of pump away from plastic bag to prevent
pump from attracting loose plastic bag around suction end of
pump, which may restrict water flow.
Low Water Temperature:
Several factors contribute to cool
water temperatures. The most common is a low or empty
propane tank. For best performance use a full propane tank
stored at room temperature. High water flow or wind also reduce
water temperatures.
Check Propane Source:
The X-40 is designed t
o operate with
a full propane tank stored at room temperature. If propane source
is low or if the propane temperature is very cold, the X-40 heater
will not heat as hot as normal and it may be needed to recirculate
water.
Wind & Altitude:
The X-40 is designed to
operate in low wind
conditions and below 5,000 feet.
F
or best performance, safely
shield X-40 from wind. Above 5,000 the X-40 may not heat as hot
as normal and it may be needed to recirculate water.
Re-circulate Water:
The X-40 is able to
instantly
provide hot
water regardless of how cold the
water so
urce is, but sometimes
recirculating the water is helpful. T
o recirculate water, place the

showerhead and pump in a water co
ntainer with 5 - 20 gallons
o
f water. Turn on the pump and
the
n the heater.
In just a few
minutes the water spraying from the shower head will be a com-
fortable temperature. By recirculating the water you are able to
still enjoy hot water with a cold or near empty propane tank or at
higher altitudes. Do not heat water over 100° or injury may result.
Follow directions found on page 4.
Condensation:
The water dripping from the bottom of the Hot
Tap during use is normal and will occur every time heater is on.
W
ater must be flowing from X-40 showerhead before igniting propane burner.
Water must always be flowing from X-40 showerhead when propane burner is on.
If water flow drops or water temperature increases, immediately point showerhead away from body and safely turn off
heater until water pressure is regained.
CAUTION
- water may be hot when water pressure is regained - keep clear of
showerhead until desired water temperature is obtained.
Do not heat water over 100°F.
System is not designed to heat water for human consumption.
Do not use indoors. The X-40 heater, like all propane systems emits deadly carbon monoxide fumes when operating.
Designed for outdoor use only. Improper use can result in injury or death.
Allow X-40 heater to completely cool before handling or storing & transport. Turn off gas valve on propane tank & discon-
nect regulator from propane tank between uses.
For best performance, shield system from wind and use propane tanks stored at room temperature.
In cold climates remove pump from water source and purge hoses with air after each use.
(To prevent damage to heating coil from freezing.)
Do not heat in confined areas. Heat only outside in well ventilated areas. Do not operate near any combustible sources.
Position propane tank clear of all heat sources. Do not store items on top of X-40. Keep clear of top and bottom covers
and housing during ignition and operation. Housing is HOT, do not touch.
Adjust water temperature with gas control knob located on front of X-40 near bottom of panel. If water is too hot reduce
gas flow using propane valve. If water is not hot enough, increase gas flow using propane valve on front of X-40 or recy-
cle water as defined on page 2. If using optional Garden Hose Adapter adjust water flow to 1 gallon or less per minute.
Water flows above 1 gallon per minute may result in lower then desired water temperatures.
If ignitor fails replace AA battery (tip end inserts first). If battery fails in field, place lit match through manual ignition hole
on back of system then turn on gas valve.
If using padded gear bag as a water container, it is necessary to first position plastic bag inside gear bag to hold water.
Position pump inside plastic bag with suction end of pump away from plastic bag to prevent pump from attracting loose
plastic bag around suction end of
pump, which may restrict water flow.
