Singalong Kit Assembly
Thank you for purchasing the Singalong Kit to accompany the McRoboFace “emoticon”. This kit will
allow you to build the breadboard to work with Robin ewman’s project from this link
ote that we have used different components from the project shown in the link above, but the
circuit is the same and easier to assemble.
Step 1 – Check you Have All Components
•400-point Breadboard
•1m Audio lead (white)
•Audio splitter lead (black)
•Strip of 10 dupont cables, 30cm
•Red jumper wire
•Black jumper wire
•Audio cable to breadboard connector PCBA
•12mm Tact switch
•10K breadboard-friendly trim pot
•10K resistor (Bands are Brown, Black, Orange)
•2 x 47uF capacitors
Step 2 – Plug in the Audio Connector PCBA
Singalong Kit Assembly
1. Check you have the breadboard oriented correctly with row 1 at the left as shown in photo
2. Plug in the audio connector to d4, d5, d6 and f4, f5, f6
Step – Make a 1cm Jumper Wire
•Cut a 24mm piece of Black wire
•Strip 7mm of each and bend over as shown above
•You will now have a 10mm insulated wire, with 7mm bare wire on each end
Step 4 – Connect Audio Ground to Breadboard
•Push the black jumper into hole j4 and the Ground strip as shown above
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 5 – Form First Capacitor
•It is important to get the correct polarity for these capacitors. For this one, leave the
negative lead straight and bend the positive lead
•The positive lead should be 0.3” (8mm) from the negative lead
Step 6 – Plug in First Capacitor
•Plug negative into i5 and positive into i8
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 7 – Form Second Capacitor
•So that the two capacitors fit together, we bend the negative lead on this one and leave the
positive lead straight
•The separation of the leads should be 0.2” (5mm)
Step 8 – Plug in Second Capacitor
•Plug negative into g6 and positive into g8
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 9 – Fit 10K trimPot
•Orient the trimpot as shown and fit the centre pin into g13 (photo shows h13, but use g13)
•The other two legs fit in h12 and h14
Step 10 – Add Power and Ground Links to Trimpot
•Cut, strip and bend jumper wires as before
•Use Red wire for positive and make 0.1” (2.5mm) shorter
•Connect Red from Positive breadboard rail to hole j12
•Connect Black from egative breadboard rail to hole j14
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 11 – Form the 10K Resistor
•Cut and bend resistor leads as shown above
•Leads should be 0.5” (12.5mm) apart and 7mm long
Step 12 – Fit the Resistor
•Fit the resistor in holes f8 and f13
•It doesn’t matter which way round the resistor is fitted
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 1 – Fit the Tact Switch and connect to Ground
•Take care not to bend the pins on the switch
•Push into holes d20, d22, g20, g22
•Cut, strip and bend another piece of black jumper wire
•Connect jumper from breadboard Ground rail to hole j22 (or i22 or h22)
Step 14 – Plug in McRoboFace
•Connect to holes a11, a12, a13, a14 as shown
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 15 – Wire in McRoboFace
•Split the strip of 10 jumper wires as follows:
oBrown, Red, Orange
oBlack, White, Grey
oViolet, Blue, Green
•You should have a single Yellow wire left (this is not needed)
•Using the Brown, Red and Orange wires, connect as shown above:
oBrown (Ground) to c14
oOrange (Din) to c12
oRed (Vcc) to c11
Singalong Kit Assembly
Step 16 – Wire in Audio Output and Switch Output
•Use the Green, Blue and Violet wires to connect the Audio:
oGreen to breadboard egative rail
oBlue to breadboard Positive rail
oBrown to hole j8
•For the switch, use the Black, White and Grey wires:
oBlack to breadboard egative rail
oWhite to breadboard Positive rail
oGrey to hole j20
•You will now have 3 sets of GVS (Ground, Volts, Signal) leads to connect:
oBrown, Red, Orange: connect to output to drive the McRoboFace
oGreen, Blue, Violet: connect to analog input for reacting to the audio
oBlack, White, Grey: connect to digital input for reading the state of the switch. Will
require an internal pullup resistor
•If using a Raspberry Pi with Picon Zero then connect as shown below
