•Gas Supplier: The Natural Gas or Propane Utility or service which supplies gas for utilization by the gas burning
applianceswithin this application. The gassupplier typically has responsibility forthe inspection and code approvalof
gas piping up to and including the Natural Gas meter or Propane storage tank of a building. Many gas suppliers also
offerservice and inspectionof appliances withinthe building.

PREPARINGFOR THE INSTALLATION
1. Read the “General Safety” section, page3 of this manual first and
thenthe entire manual carefully. Ifyou don’tfollowthesafety rules,
thewater heater will not operate properly. It could causeDEATH,
SERIOUSBODILYINJURYAND/ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.
Thismanual containsinstructions fortheinstallation, operation,and
maintenanceofthegas-firedwaterheater. Italsocontainswarnings
throughout the manual that you must read and be aware of. All
warningsand allinstructions areessentialto theproperoperation of
thewater heater and your safety. Sincewe cannot put everything
on the first few pages, READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE
ATTEMPTINGTOINSTALLOROPERATETHEWATERHEATER.
2. The installation must conform with these instructions and the local
code authority having jurisdiction. In the absence of local codes,
installations shall comply with the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI

Water (Potable) Heating and Space Heating: All models are
consideredsuitableforwater (potable) heating and space heating.
HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:
Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to
a temperature which will satisfy space heating, clothes washing,
dishwashing, and other sanitizing needs canscald and permanently
injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to be
permanently injured by hot water than others. These include the
elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/mentally handicapped. If
anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these groups
or if there is a local code requiring a certain temperature water at
thehotwatertap,thenyoumust take special precautions. In addition
to using the lowest possible temperature setting that satisfies your
hot water needs, a means such as a *Mixing Valve, shall be used at
the hot water taps used by these people or at the water heater.
Mixing valves are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores.
Consult a qualified installer or service agency. Follow mixing valve
manufacturer’s instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
“Temperature Regulation” section in this manual, see Figures 15
and 16.

FACTSTO CONSIDERABOUT THE LOCATION
Carefullychoose anindoorlocation for thenewwater heater, because
the placement is a very important consideration for the safety of the
occupants in the building and for the most economical use of the
appliance. This water heater is not for use in manufactured
(mobile) homes or outdoor installation.
Whetherreplacing an old water heaterorputtingthe water heater in a
newlocation,thefollowingcritical points must be observed:
1. Select a location indoors as close as practical to the gas vent or
chimneyto which the water heater vent isgoingto be connected,
andas centralized with the water piping systemaspossible.
2. Selected location must provide adequate clearancesforservicing
andproperoperation of the water heater.
Installationofthe waterheater mustbeaccomplishedinsuchamanner
thatifthetankoranyconnectionsshouldleak,theflowwillnotcause
damagetothe structure. Forthis reason,it isnotadvisabletoinstallthe
waterheater in anatticor upper floor. Whensuch locationscannotbe
avoided,asuitabledrainpanshouldbeinstalledunderthe waterheater.
Drain pans are available at your local hardware store. Such a drain
pan must have a minimum length and width of at least 2” (51 mm)
greater than the water heater dimensions and must be piped to an
adequatedrain. The panmustnotrestrictcombustionairflow.
Water heater life depends upon water quality, water pressure and the
environmentinwhich the water heater is installed. Water heaters are
sometimesinstalled in locationswhereleakage may resultinproperty
damage,even with the use of adrain panpiped to a drain.However,
unanticipateddamage canbe reducedorprevented byaleak detector
or water shut-off device used in conjunction with a piped drain pan.
Thesedevices are available from someplumbingsupplywholesalers
andretailers,and detect and react to leakage in variousways:
• Sensorsmounted in the drain pan that triggeran alarm or turn off
theincomingwatertothewater heater when leakage is detected.
• Sensorsmountedinthedrainpanthatturnoff the water supply to
theentirehome when water is detected in the drain pan.
• Water supply shut-off devices that activate based on the water
pressure differential between the cold water and hot water pipes
connectedto the water heater.
• Devicesthat will turn offthegas supply to agaswaterheater while
atthesame time shutting offitswater supply.

INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS
(VAPORS)ARELIKELYTOBEPRESENTORSTORED(GARAGES,
STORAGEAND UTILITYAREAS, ETC.):Flammableliquids(suchas
gasoline,solvents, propane [LPorbutane, etc.] andothersubstances
suchasadhesives, etc.) emit flammable vapors which can be ignited
byagaswaterheater’spilotlightormainburner. Theresultingflashback
and fire can cause death or serious burns to anyone in the area, as
well as property damage. If installation in such areas is your only
option,thentheinstallationmustbeaccomplishedin awaythatthepilot
flame and main burner flame are elevated from the floor at least 18
inches.While this mayreducethe chances of flammablevapors,from
a floor spill being ignited, gasoline and other flammable substances
shouldnever be stored orusedin the same room orareacontaining a
gas water heater or other open flame or spark producing appliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents from other
areasofthe structure to the appliance.
Also, the water heater must be located and/or protected so it is not
subjectto physical damage byamovingvehicle.
Thiswaterheater mustnot beinstalled directlyon carpeting. Carpeting
must be protected by metal or wood panel beneath the appliance
extendingbeyond the full width and depth of the appliance by at least
3” (76.2mm)in anydirection,oriftheapplianceisinstalledin analcove
orcloset,theentirefloormust becovered bythepanel. Failuretoheed
thiswarning may result in afire hazard.

Minimum clearances between the water heater and combustible
constructionare 0 inch at the sides and rear,4”(102mm) at the front,
and 6” (153 mm) from the vent pipe. Clearance from the top of the
jacketis 12” (305 mm) on most models. Note thatalesserdimension
maybeallowed onsome models,refertothelabelattachedadjacentto
thegascontrol valve on the water heater,see Figure 3.

Agaswaterheatercannotoperate properlywithout thecorrect amount
ofairforcombustion. Do notinstallinaconfined areasuchasacloset,
unless you provide air as shown in the “Locating The New Water
Heater”section. Never obstruct the flow of ventilation air. If you have
anydoubtsor questionsatall, callyour gassupplier. Failuretoprovide
the proper amount of combustion air can result in a fire or explosion
andcause death, serious bodily injury,or property damage.

Ifthiswater heaterwill beusedinbeautyshops,barbershops,cleaning
establishments,or self-servicelaundrieswith dry cleaningequipment,
it is imperative that the water heater or water heaters be installed so
thatcombustion and ventilationairbe taken fromoutsidetheseareas.
Propellants of aerosol sprays and volatile compounds, (cleaners,
chlorinebased chemicals,refrigerants,etc.) in additiontobeing highly
flammableinmany cases, will also change to corrosivehydrochloric
acid when exposed to the combustion products of the water heater.
Theresultscanbe hazardous, and also cause product failure.
INSULATION BLANKETS
Insulationblankets are available to thegeneralpublicfor external use
ongas water heaters but are not necessary withtheseproducts. The
purpose of an insulation blanket is to reduce the standby heat loss
encountered with storage tank heaters. Your water heater meets or
exceedsthe EPACTstandards withrespecttoinsulation and standby
lossrequirements,making an insulationblanketunnecessary.
Should you choose to apply an insulation blanket to this heater, you
should follow these instructions (For identification of components
mentioned below, see Figure 1). Failure to follow these instructions
can restrict the air flow required for proper combustion, potentially
resultingin fire, asphyxiation, serious personal injury or death.
•Do not apply insulation to the top of the water heater, as this will
interfere with safe operation of the draft hood.
•Donot cover the outer door, thermostator temperature &pressure
reliefvalve.
•Do not allow insulation to come within 2" (50.8 mm) of the floor to
preventblockageofcombustion air flow to the burner.
•Do not cover the instruction manual. Keep it on the side of the
water heater or nearby for future reference.
•Doobtainnewwarningandinstructionlabelsfromthe manufacturer
forplacement on the blanket directly overtheexistinglabels.
•Do inspect the insulation blanket frequently to make certain it
doesnotsag,thereby obstructing combustion air flow.
COMBUSTIONAIRAND VENTILATION FOR
APPLIANCESLOCATED INUNCONFINED SPACES
UNCONFINED SPACE is space whose volume is not less than
50cubic feet per 1,000 Btu per hour (4.8 m3per kW) of the aggregate
input rating of all appliances installed in that space. Rooms
communicating directly with the space in which the appliances are
installed,through openingsnotfurnished with doors,areconsidered a
partof the unconfined space.
Inunconfinedspacesinbuildings,infiltrationmaybeadequatetoprovide
airforcombustion,ventilationanddilutionoffluegases. However, in
buildingsof tight construction (forexample,weatherstripping, heavily
insulated,caulked, vapor barrier, etc.), additional air mayneed to be
providedusingthemethodsdescribedin“CombustionAirandVentilation
forAppliancesLocatedinConfinedSpaces.”
COMBUSTIONAIRAND VENTILATION FOR
APPLIANCESLOCATED INCONFINED SPACES
CONFINEDSPACEisaspacewhosevolumeis lessthan50cubicfeet
per1,000 Btuperhour (4.8m3perkW) oftheaggregate inputratingof
allappliances installed inthatspace.

Theconfined space shall beprovided with two permanentopenings
communicatingdirectly withanadditional room(s) ofsufficientvolume
so that the combined volume of all spaces meets the criteria for an
unconfinedspace. Thetotalinputofallgasutilizationequipmentinstalled
inthecombinedspaceshallbeconsideredinmakingthisdetermination.
Eachopening shall have a minimum free area ofonesquareinchper
1,000 Btu per hour (22 cm2/kW) of the total input rating of all gas
utilizationequipmentintheconfinedspace,butnotlessthan100square
inches (645 cm2). One opening shall commence within 12”
(30 cm) of the top and one commencing within 12” (30 cm) of the
bottomof the enclosures.

Theconfinedspaceshall be provided with two permanent openings,
one commencing within 12” (30 cm) of the top and one
commencingwithin12” (30cm)fromthe bottomof theenclosure. The
openingsshall communicate directly,or byducts,withtheoutdoorsor
spaces(crawl or attic) that freely communicate with the outdoors.
1. When directly communicating with the outdoors, each opening shall
have a minimum free area of 1 square inch per 4,000 Btu per hour
(5.5 cm2/kW)oftotalinputratingofallequipmentintheenclosure,see
Figure6.

2. Whencommunicatingwiththeoutdoorsthroughverticalducts,each
openingmusthavea minimumfreearea of1 squareinchper 4,000
Btuperhour(5.5cm2/kW)of totalinputrating ofallequipmentinthe
enclosure,see Figure 7.
3. When communicating with the outdoors through horizontal ducts,
eachopening shall have aminimumfreearea of 1 square inchper
2,000Btuper hour(11cm2/kW))of totalinputratingofallequipment
inthe enclosure, see Figure 8.

4. When ducts are used, they shall be of the same cross-sectional
areaas the free area of the openingsto which they connect. The
minimumshort side dimensionofrectangularair ducts shallnotbe
lessthan 3” (76.2 mm), see Figure 8.

5. LouversandGrilles:In calculatingfreearea, consideration shallbe
givento the blocking effect oflouvers,grillesorscreens protecting
openings. Screens used shall not be smaller than 1/4 inch
(6.4mm) mesh. If the free area throughadesignoflouver or grille
isknown, itshouldbe used incalculatingthe sizeopeningrequired
toprovide the freeareaspecified. If the designandfree area isnot
known,it may beassumedthat wood louverswillbe 20-25 percent
freearea andmetallouvers and grilleswillhave 60-75 percentfree
area. Louvers and grilles shall be fixed in the open position or
interlockedwiththeequipmentsothattheyareopenedautomatically
duringequipmentoperation.
6. SpecialConditionsCreatedbyMechanicalExhaustingorFireplaces:
operation of exhaust fans, ventilation systems, clothes dryers or
fireplacesmaycreateconditionsrequiringspecial attentionto avoid
unsatisfactoryoperation of installedgasutilizationequipment.

WATER PIPING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD:
Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a
temperature which will satisfy space heating, clothes washing, dish
washing,cleaningandothersanitizingneedscanscaldandpermanently
injureyouuponcontact. Somepeoplearemorelikely tobepermanently
injuredbyhotwater thanothers. These includetheelderly,children, the
infirm,or physically/mentallyhandicapped. If anyoneusinghot waterin
yourhome fitsinto oneofthese groupsorif thereisa localcodeor state
lawrequiring a certaintemperaturewater at thehotwater tap, thenyou
musttake special precautions. In addition tousingthelowest possible
temperaturesetting that satisfies your hot water needs, a means such
as a *mixing valve, shall be used at the hot water taps used by these
peopleor atthewater heater,see Figure2. Valvesforreducingpoint of
usetemperaturebymixingcoldandhotwaterarealsoavailable.Consult
a qualified installer or service agency. Follow manufacturer’s
instructionsfor installation of the valves. Before changing thefactory
settingon thethermostat,readthe“TemperatureRegulation”sectionin
thismanual.
This water heater shall not be connected to any heating systems or
component(s)used with a non-potable water heating appliance.
All piping components connected to this unit for space heating
applicationsshallbesuitablefor use with potable water.
Toxic chemicals, such as those used for boiler treatment shall not be
introducedinto this system.
When the system requires water for space heating at temperatures
higher than required for domestic water purposes, a tempering valve
must be installed. Please refer to Figure 2 for suggested piping
arrangement.
Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line
pressure,frequent cut-offs,theeffects ofwaterhammer among others,
haveinstalleddevicessuch aspressurereducing valves,checkvalves,
back flow preventers, etc. to control these types of problems. When
thesedevicesarenot equipped with an internal by-pass, and no other
measuresare taken, the devicescausethe water system tobeclosed.

Aswater is heated,itexpands (thermal expansion)andclosed systems
do not allow for the expansion of heated water.
The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated and
increasesthe pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of the
waterheater’stemperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the valve
will relieve the excess pressure. The temperature-pressure relief
valve is not intended for the constant relief of thermal
expansion. Thisis an unacceptable condition and must be corrected.
Itisrecommended thatany devicesinstalled whichcouldcreateaclosed
system have a by-pass and/or the system have an expansion tank to
relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion in the water system.
Expansion tanks are available for ordering through a local plumbing
contractor. Refer tothe“ThermalExpansion”sectioninthismanual and/
orcontactthe localwatersupplierand/oraserviceagencyforassistance
incontrolling these situations.
NOTE: To protect against untimely corrosion of hot and cold
water fittings, it is strongly recommended that di-electric unions
or couplings be installed on this water heater when connected
to copper pipe.

Figure 9 shows the typical attachment of the water piping to the water
heater. The water heater is equipped with 1” NPT threaded nipple
(75 gallon models) or 1.25” NPT threaded nipple (100 gallon models)
water connections.
NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter before
attaching the adapter to the cold water inlet connection. Do not
solder the cold water supply line directly to the cold water inlet.
It will harm the dip tube and damage the tank.
TEMPERATURE-PRESSURERELIEF VALVE
This heater is provided with a properly certified combination
temperature-pressurereliefvalvebythemanufacturer.
Thevalveis certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that
maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment of
materialsas meeting the requirementsfor Relief ValvesandAutomatic
GasShut-offDevicesforHotWaterSupplySystems,ANSIZ21.22•CSA
4.4,and the coderequirementsofASME.
Ifreplaced, thevalve mustmeetthe requirementsoflocal codes,butnot
lessthan a combination temperature and pressure relief valvecertified
asindicated in the above paragraph.
Thevalve must be marked with amaximumsetpressurenot to exceed
the marked maximum working pressure of the water heater
(150 psi = 1,035 kPa) and a dischargecapacitynotlessthanthe water
heaterinput rate as shown on the model rating plate.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not be
removedfrom itsdesignatedopening nor plugged.
Thetemperature-pressure relief valvemustbe installed directlyintothe
fitting of the water heater designed for the relief valve. Position the
valvedownwardandprovidetubingsothatanydischargewillexitonly
within6” (153 mm) above, or at any distancebelow the structural floor.
Be certain that no contact is made with any live electrical part. The
discharge opening must not be blocked or reduced in size under any
circumstances. Excessivelength,over30’ (9.14m), oruseofmorethan
fourelbows can cause restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of
thevalve, see Figure 10.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between the relief valve
andthe tank. Do notconnecttubing directly todischargedrain unless a
6 inch air gap is provided. To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or
propertydamage, the reliefvalvemust be allowedtodischargewater in
quantities should circumstances demand. If the discharge pipe is not
connectedto a drainorother suitable means,thewater flow may cause
propertydamage.
TheDischargePipe:
• Shall not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the valve, or
haveanyreducingcouplingsorother restrictions.
• Shallnot bepluggedor blocked.
• Shallbe of material listed for hot water distribution.
• Shall be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both the
temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge pipe.
• Shallterminateatan adequatedrain.
• Shallnothaveany valve between the relief valve and tank.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated at
leastonceayear. Cautionshouldbetakento ensure that (1) no one is
in front of or around the outlet of the temperature-pressure relief
valve discharge line, and (2) the water manually discharged will not
causeany bodily injury or property damage because the water may be
extremelyhot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and
continuesto release water, immediately closethecoldwater inlet to the
water heater, follow the draining instructions, and replace the
temperature-pressurerelief valve with a newone.

FILLINGTHE WATERHEATER
Never use this water heater unless it is completely full of water. To
preventdamage to the tank,thetank must be filled with water. Water
must flow from the hot water faucet before turning “ON” gas to the
water heater.
To fill the water heater with water:
1. Closethewaterheaterdrain valvebyturning thehandle to theright
(clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of the water
heater.
2. Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open when
the water heater is in use.
3. Toinsurecompletefilling ofthetank,allow airtoexit byopeningthe
nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run until a constant flow
isobtained. Thiswilllet air out of the water heater and the piping.
4. Checkallwaterpipingandconnectionsforleaks. Repairasneeded.
VENTING
VENTDAMPERS-Anyventdamper,whetheritisoperatedthermallyor
otherwise must be removed if its use inhibits proper drafting of the
water heater.
ThermallyOperatedVentDampers: this gas-fired water heater has a
thermal efficiency at or above 80% which may produce a relatively
lowfluegastemperature. Such temperaturesmay notbehigh enough
toproperly open thermally operatedventdampers. Thiswould cause
spillageof thefluegasesand may causecarbonmonoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as complying with
the current edition of theAmerican National StandardANSI Z21.66
CGA 6.14 (covering electrically and mechanically actuated vent
dampers). Before installation of any vent damper, consult the local
gasutilityforfurtherinformation.
To insure proper venting of this gas-fired water heater, the correct
ventpipediametermust beutilized. Anyadditions ordeletions ofother
gasappliancesonacommonventwiththis waterheatermayadversely
affect the operation of the water heater. Consult your gas supplier if
anysuchchangesareplanned.
Forproper venting in certain installations, a larger diameter vent pipe
maybenecessary. Consultyourgassuppliertoaid youindetermining
the proper venting for your water heater from the vent tables in the
currenteditionoftheNationalFuel GasCodeANSIZ223.1/NFPA 54.
Periodically check the venting system for signs of obstruction or
deteriorationand replace ifneeded.
Thecombustion and ventilation air flow must notbeobstructed.
The water heater with draft hood installed must be connected to a
chimneyor listed vent pipe system, which terminates totheoutdoors.
Neveroperate the waterheaterunless it isventedtothe outdoors and
hasadequateairsupply toavoid risksofimproperoperation,explosion
orasphyxiation.
• Forproperdrafthood attachment,thedraft hoodlegsmaybeangled
slightlyinward.
• Place the draft hood legs in the receiving holes on the top of the
water heater. The legs will snap in the holes to give a tight fit.
Securedrafthood with the supplied brackets.
• Placetheventpipeoverthedrafthood.Withtheventpipeinposition,
drilla small holethroughboth the vent pipeanddraft hood. Secure
themtogetherwithasheetmetalscrew, see Figure 11.
Obstructedordeterioratedvent systems may present serious health
riskor asphyxiation.

Chemicalvapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may occur if air

refrigerants,swimming pool chemicals, calcium and sodiumchloride,
waxes,bleach and process chemicals are typical compoundswhich
arepotentially corrosive.
GAS PIPING
Makesure thegassupplied isthesame typelistedon themodelrating
plate. Theinletgaspressuremustnotexceed14inch watercolumn
(2.6kPa) for natural and propane (L.P.) gas. The minimum inlet gas
pressure shown on the rating plate is that which will permit firing at
ratedinput.
Ifthe gas controlvalveis subjected topressuresexceeding1/2 pound
persquareinch (3.5 kPa), the damage to the gas controlvalvecould
resultinafireorexplosionfromleakinggas.
Ifthemaingaslineshut-off servingall gasappliancesisused,also turn
“off” the gas at each appliance. Leave all gas appliances shut “off”
untilthe water heater installationiscomplete.
Agas line of sufficient size must be run to the water heater. Consult
thecurrenteditionofNationalFuelGasCodeANSIZ223.1/NFPA54and
yourgassupplierconcerningpipesize.
Theremustbe:
• A readily accessible manual shut off valve in the gas supply line
servingthewater heater,and
• A drip leg (sediment trap) ahead of the gas control valve to help
prevent dirt and foreign materials from entering the gas control
valve.
• Aflexible gas connector or a ground jointunionbetween the shut
offvalve and control valve to permit servicingof the unit.
Besure to check all the gas pipingfor leaks before lighting the water
heater. Useasoapy water solution,nota match oropenflame. Rinse
off soapy solution and wipe dry.
Theminimuminletgaspressureshownonthe ratingplate isthat which
willpermit firing at the rated input.
Standard Models are for installationupto 2,000 feet (610 m) above
sealevel.
High Altitude models are for installation from 2,000 feet
(610m)to 4,500 feet (1,370 m) above sea level.
Ifastandard modelisinstalledabove2,000feet(610m)or highaltitude
modelisinstalled above4,500feet(1,370m),theinput ratingshouldbe
reducedat the rate of 4percentforeach1000 feet (305 m) above sea

Failureto replace the standard orifice with ahighaltitudeorificewhen
installedat elevations above 2,000 feet (610 m) orabove 4,500 feet

of safe limits, which could result in serious injury or death. Contact

Theapplianceanditsgasconnectionmustbeleaktestedbeforeplacing

Theapplianceand its individual shut-off valve shall be disconnected

SEDIMENTTRAPS
A sediment trap shall be installed as close to the inlet of the water
heateraspractical atthetimeofwaterheaterinstallation.Thesediment
trapshallbeeither ateefittingwitha cappednipplein thebottom outlet
orother devicerecognizedas an effectivesedimenttrap. Ifateefitting
isused, it shallbeinstalledin conformance withoneof the methods of
installationshown in Figures 13 and 14.
Contaminantsinthe gaslinesmaycauseimproperoperationofthegas
controlvalve that may result in fire or explosion. Before attaching the
gasline be surethatall gas pipeisclean on theinside. To trapanydirt
orforeignmaterialin thegas supplyline,adripleg (sometimescalled a
sedimenttrap)must beincorporated inthe piping. Thedrip legmust be

Checkdrafthoodoperationbyperformingaworstcasedepressurization
of the building. With all doors and windows closed, and with all air
handlingequipmentandexhaustfansoperatingsuchasfurnaces,clothes
dryers,rangehoodsandbathroomfans,a match flame should still be
drawnintothedraft hoodof thewaterheater withits burnerfiring. Ifthe
flame is not drawn toward the draft hood, shut off water heater and
makenecessary air supplychangesto correct.
CONDENSATION
Wheneverthe water heater isfilledwithcold water,somecondensate
Neverallow small children to use a hot watertap,ortodraw their own
bathwater. Neverleavea child or handicappedpersonunattendedin
a bathtub or shower.
NOTE: A water temperature range of 120°F-140°F (49°C-60°C) is
recommendedby most dishwasher manufacturers.
Thethermostatof this water heater has been factory set atitslowest
position(PILOT LIGHTING). It is adjustable and mustberesettothe
desiredtemperaturesettingtoreducetheriskof scaldinjury. Themark
() indicative of approximately 120°F (49°C) is preferred starting
point. SomeStateshave a requirement for a lower setting.
Turn the water temperature dial clockwise ( ) to decrease the

Shouldoverheating occur or the gas supply failtoshutoff,turn off the
manualgas control valvetotheappliance.

Short repeated heating cycles caused by small hot water uses can
causetemperaturesat thepoint ofusetoexceedthethermostatsetting
byup to 30°F (16.7°C). If you experiencethis type of use you should
considerusinglowertemperature settings to reduce scald hazards.
Any water heater’s intended purpose is to heat water. Hot water is
neededforcleansing,cleaning,andsanitizing(bodies,dishes,clothing).
Untemperedhot watercanpresenta scald hazard. Dependingonthe
timeelement, andthepeople involved (adults,children, elderly,infirm,
etc.)scaldingmayoccurat different temperatures.
HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:Waterheatersareintendedtoproduce
hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will satisfy space
heating, clothes washing, dish washing, and other sanitizing needs
canscald andpermanentlyinjure youuponcontact. Some people are
morelikely to bepermanentlyinjured by hotwaterthanothers. These
include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/mentally
handicapped. Ifanyoneusing hot water in your home fitsinto one of
thesegroupsorifthereis a local code or state law requiring a certain
temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take special
precautions. Inadditiontousingthelowestpossibletemperaturesetting
thatsatisfies your hot water needs, a meanssuch as a mixing valve,
shall be used at the hot water taps used by these people or at the
water heater. Mixing valves are available at plumbing supply or
hardwarestores, see Figure2. Followmanufacturer’sinstructions for
installation of the valves. Before changing the factory setting on the
thermostat,readthe “Temperature Regulation” sectioninthismanual,
seeFigures 15 and 16.

b. Burning gas produces water vapor in water heaters, particularly

c. Large amounts of hot water are used in a short time and the refill
water in the tank is very cold.
Moisturefromtheproducts ofcombustion condenseonthecoolertank
surfaces and form drops of water which may fall onto the burner or
other hot surfaces to produce a “sizzling” or “frying” noise.
Excessive condensation can cause pilot outage due to water running
downthefluetube ontothe mainburnerandputtingout thepilot.

Becauseof thesuddenness and amountof water,condensationwater
maybediagnosedasa“tankleak”. Afterthewaterinthe tankwarmsup
(about1-2hours),theconditionshoulddisappear.

timefor the water in the tank to warm up.
Anundersized waterheaterwill cause morecondensation. Thewater
heatermustbesizedproperlytomeetthefamily’sdemandsforhotwater
includingdishwashers, washing machinesandshower heads.
Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and early
springmonths whenincomingwater temperaturesareat their lowest.
Goodventingisessentialforagasfiredwaterheatertooperateproperly
as well as to carry away products of combustion and water vapor.
SMOKE/ODOR
It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and odor
duringtheinitialstart-up. Thisisduetoburningoffofoilfrommetalparts,
andwill disappear in ashortwhile.

Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line
pressure, frequent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer among
others,haveinstalled devicessuch aspressurereducingvalves,check
valves,backflowpreventers,etc.to control these types of problems.
Whenthesedevicesare notequippedwith aninternalby-pass,andno
othermeasuresaretaken, the devices cause the water system to be
closed. Aswaterisheated, itexpands(thermalexpansion)and closed
systems do not allow for the expansion of heated water.
The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated and
increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of
the water heater’s temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the
valve will relieve the excess pressure. The temperature-pressure
relief valve is not intended for the constant relief of thermal
expansion. Thisis anunacceptable conditionandmust becorrected.
It is recommended that any devices installed which could create a
closedsystemhaveaby-passand/orthesystem have an expansion
tankor device torelievethe pressure builtbythermal expansion inthe
water system. Expansion tanks are available for ordering through a
localplumbingcontractor. Contactthe local water heater supplier or
serviceagencyforassistance in controlling these situations.
STRANGESOUNDS
Possiblenoises duetoexpansion andcontractionof somemetalparts
duringperiods of heat-upandcool-down do notnecessarilyrepresent
harmfulor dangerous conditions.
Condensationcausessizzlingandpoppingwithintheburnerareaduring
heating and cooling periods and should be considered normal. See
“Condensation”in this section.
OPERATIONALCONDITIONS
SMELLYWATER
In each water heater there is installed at least one anode rod (see
parts section) for corrosion protection of the tank. Certain water
conditionswill cause a reaction between this rod andthe water. The
most common complaint associated with the anode rod is one of a
“rottenegg smell” inthehot water. Thisodoris derivedfromhydrogen
sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is the result of four
factors which must all be present for the odor to develop:
a. Aconcentration of sulfate in the supply water.
b. Little or no dissolved oxygen inthewater.
c. Asulfatereducingbacteriawhichhasaccumulatedwithin thewater
heater(this harmless bacteria is nontoxic to humans).
d. An excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by the
corrosionprotectiveactionoftheanode.
Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater
modelsby replacing theanode(s)with one oflessactivematerial, and
thenchlorinating thewaterheater tankandall hotwaterlines. Contact
thelocalwaterheater supplieror serviceagencyfor furtherinformation
concerninganAnodeReplacement Kitandthischlorinationtreatment.
Ifthesmellywaterpersistsaftertheanodereplacementandchlorination
treatment, we can only suggest that chlorination or aeration of the
watersupply be considered to eliminate the water problem.
Do not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. By
doing so, all warranty on the water heater tank is voided.
“AIR”INHOTWATERFAUCETS
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water
systemthat has not beenusedfora long period oftime(generallytwo
weeksormore). Hydrogengas isextremelyflammable andexplosive.
To prevent the possibility of injury under these conditions, we
recommend the hot water faucet, located farthest away, be opened
for several minutes before any electrical appliances which are
connectedto the hot watersystemareused (such as a dishwasheror
washingmachine). Ifhydrogengasispresent,therewillprobablybe
an unusual sound similar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot
waterfaucetisopened. There mustbe nosmokingoropenflame near
thefaucetatthetimeitisopen.
HIGHWATERTEMPERATURESHUTOFFSYSTEM
Thiswater heater is equipped with an automaticgasShut-offsystem.
This system works when high water temperatures are present. The
hightemperatureShut-offisbuilt into the gas control valve. It is non-
resettable. IfthehightemperatureShut-offactivates,the gas control
valvemustbe replaced. Contactyourgassupplierorservice agency.
Turn “OFF” the entire gas supply to the water heater.

VENTINGSYSTEM INSPECTION
Atleast once ayearavisual inspection should bemadeof the venting
system. Youshouldlookfor:
1. Obstructionswhichcouldcause improperventing. The combustion
andventilationairflowmustnotbeobstructed.
2. Damage or deterioration which could cause improper venting or
leakageof combustion products.
3. Rusted flakes around top of waterheater.
Be sure the vent piping is properly connected to prevent escape of
dangerousfluegases which could cause deadly asphyxiation.
Obstructionsanddeterioratedventsystemsmaypresentserioushealth
riskor asphyxiation.
Chemicalvapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may occur if air
forcombustioncontainscertainchemicalvapors.Spraycanpropellants,
cleaning solvents, refrigerator and air conditioner refrigerants,
swimmingpoolchemicals,calciumandsodiumchloride,waxes,bleach
and process chemicals are typical compounds which are potentially
corrosive.
Ifafterinspectionofthevent systemyou foundsooting ordeterioration,
somethingiswrong. Callthelocalgas utilityto correctthe problemand
cleanor replace theflueandventing before resumingoperationofthe
water heater.
BURNERINSPECTION
Flooddamagetoawaterheatermaynotbereadilyvisibleorimmediately
detectable.However, over aperiodoftimea flooded water heater will
create dangerous conditions which can cause DEATH, SERIOUS
BODILYINJURY,ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.Contactaqualifiedinstaller
orservice agency toreplaceaflooded water heater.Do notattemptto
repairthe unit!It mustbereplaced!
At least once a year a visual inspection should be made of the main
burnerand pilot burner,see Figure 17.

Combustiblematerialssuchasclothing,cleaningmaterials,orflammable
liquids,etc. mustnotbe placed againstoradjacent to thewaterheater
which can cause a fire.
ANODEROD INSPECTION
The anode rod is used to protect the tank from corrosion. Most hot
water tanks are equipped with an anode rod. The submerged rod
sacrifices itself to protect the tank. Instead of corroding the tank,
water ions attack and eat away the anode rod. This does not affect
thewater’stasteor color. Therodmustbe maintainedto keepthe tank
inoperatingcondition.
Anode deterioration depends on water conductivity, not necessarily
water condition.Acorroded or pitted anode rod indicates high water
conductivityandshould be checked and/or replaced more often than
an anode rod that appears to be intact. Replacement of a depleted
anoderodcanextendthelifeof your water heater. Inspection should
beconducted by a qualified technician, andat a minimum should be
checkedannuallyafter the warranty period.
TEMPERATURE-PRESSURE
RELIEFVALVE OPERATION
Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbemanually operated at
leastoncea year.
Whencheckingthetemperature-pressure reliefvalveoperation, make
surethat(1) noone isin frontof oraround theoutlet ofthe temperature-
pressurerelief valve discharge line, and (2) thatthe water discharge
will not cause any property damage, as the water may be extremely
hot,see Figure 18.

If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and
continues to release water, immediately close the cold water inlet to
the water heater, follow the draining instructions, and replace the
temperature-pressurerelief valve with a newone.
If the temperature-pressure relief valve on the appliance weeps or
discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal expansion. You
may have a check valve installed in the water line or a water meter
with a check valve. Consult your local water supplier or service
agencyfor further information. Donotplug thetemperature-pressure
reliefvalve.
DRAINING
Thewater heatershould bedrainedif beingshutdown duringfreezing
temperatures. Alsoperiodicdraining and cleaning of sediment from
thetankmay be necessary.
1. Turn the gascontrolknobto the “OFF” position.
2. CLOSE the cold water inlet valve to the water heater.
3. OPEN a nearby hot water faucet andleaveopen to allow for
draining.
4. Connect a hose to the drain valve and terminate to an adequate
drain.
5. OPEN the water heater drain valve to allowfortankdraining.
NOTE: If the water heater is going to be shut down and
drained for an extended period, the drain valve should be
left open with hose connected allowing water to terminate
to an adequate drain.
6. CLOSEthedrainvalve.
7. Follow instructions inthe“Filling The Water Heater”section.
8. Follow the lighting instructions on the label or the “Lighting and
OperatingInstructions”sectiontorestartthewaterheater.
DRAINVALVE WASHERREPLACEMENT FOR

1. Turn“OFF”gas supply to water heater.
2. Follow “Draining” instructions.
3. Turning counterclockwise ( ), remove the hex cap below the
screw handle.

retightenusingawrench.DONOTOVERTIGHTEN.
