Reading Head Replacement Instructions
ACU-RITE ®
Before proceeding:
³Reading head replacement can only be preformed on
the left end of the scale case.
³Read the instructions completely before beginning.
³Save the packaging material and encoder alignment
brackets for return of the defective reading head to
ACU-RITE.
³ACU-RITE will evaluate the returned reading head
for cause of failure.
³Ensure that no further damage occurs while removing,
and packaging the old reading head.
Cable exit direction ...
•Loosen the three screws and remove the left cap,
gasket, and stop.
•Determine the cable exit direction before
installing the reading head.
•Remove the cover plate to change the cable exit
direction.
Existing reading head removal ...

•Remove the encoder reading head mounting
screws.
•Carefully slide the reading head out through the
left end of the scale case.
Reading head installation ...
8-32 Low Head SHCS (2)
•Remove the shipping tape from the new reading
head assembly.
•Align the roll pins in the positioning tool with the
mating guides in the left end of the scale case
extrusion and fit together flush.
•Hold securely so that there is no gap between the
scale case extrusion sections.

Completing the installation ...
•Remove the alignment brackets and replacement
reading head scale section. Reinstall left end cap.
Tighten screws securely to compress the end cap
gasket.
•Repackage the defective reading head in the same
manner as it was received. Use the return
information provided for returning the head to
ACU-RITE.
•Hold tool securely so that there is no gap between
the scale case extrusion sections.
•Use caution when sliding the reading head into
the scale case. Carefully slide the head to the
center section of the encoder.

•Slide alignment brackets away from the reading
head.
•Remove brackets and save.
•Reinstall alignment brackets using the reverse
order of prior removal.
•Slide the reading head with the brackets attached
to the mounting bracket location. Align the
reading head and bracket mounting holes. If the
bracket was moved from its original position, it
must be realigned to the reading head while
attached to the alignment brackets.
•Attach the reading head with the two 8-32 SHCS,
but do not tighten.
•Set each leveling screw by placing a .001 - .003”
feeler gage between the screw and reading head
mounting bracket, and adjust each screw until a
slight drag is felt on the feeler gage.
• Evenly tighten the two 8-32 SHCS to secure
the reading head in place.
