3. GENERAL
We should like to congr tul te you on your purch se of these new nd innov tive
ALMEMO
®
Bluetooth devices. The wireless system in p rticul r st nds out by virtue
of its excellent specific tions. Th nks to its power mplifier it provides wide oper -
ting r nge (up to 300 meters free field). Using the CPU up to seven simult neously
ctive links to ALMEMO
®
Bluetooth sl ve modules c n be configured quickly nd
e sily. With the AMR-Control oper ting softw re nd the cle r nd re dily under-
st nd ble gr phics displ y these devices re e sy nd convenient to oper te. You
re strongly dvised to t ke the time to c refully re d these oper ting instructions
nd to properly f mili rize yourself with the system's numerous functions nd fe tu-
res. This is the best w y to void oper ting errors nd prevent d m ge to these de-
vices. To help you find nswers to your questions s quickly nd e sily s possible
n index is provided t the end of these instructions nd t the end of the M nu l.
3.1 Warranty
E ch nd every device, before le ving our f ctory, undergoes numerous qu lity
tests. We provide gu r ntee, l sting two ye rs from delivery d te, th t your devi-
ce will function trouble-free. In the unlikely event th t device does prove defecti-
ve nd you need to return it, ple se wherever possible use the origin l p ck ging
m teri ls for disp tch nd enclose cle r nd inform tive description of the f ult
nd of the conditions in which it occurs.
This gu r ntee will not pply in the following circumst nces:
- Any form of un uthorized t mpering or lter tion inside the device
- Use of the device in environments or conditions for which it is not suited
- Use of the device with n unsuit ble power supply nd / or in conjunction with
unsuit ble peripher l equipment

4.1 pecial notes on use
If the device is brought into the work-room from cold environ-
ment there is risk th t condens tion might form on the electro-
nics. You re dvised therefore, before st rting to use the device,
to w it until it h s djusted to the mbient temper ture.
4.2 Handling batteries / rechargeable batteries correctly
When inserting b tteries / rech rge ble b tteries ensure th t the
pol rity is correct. If the device will prob bly not be needed for
rel tively long period of time or if the b tteries re empty, remove
the b tteries; this will prevent b ttery cid le king onto the device
nd d m ging it. Rech rge ble b tteries should be rech rged s
nd when necess ry.
You should never ttempt to rech rge n ordin ry (non-rech rge-
ble) b ttery; it m y explode !
B tteries / rech rge ble b tteries must never be short-circuited
or thrown onto the fire.

5. ALMEMO® Bluetooth Network
5. ALMEMO® BLUETOOTH NETWORK
Bluetooth CPUs nd sl ve modules c n be connected to ny ALMEMO® me su-
ring instrument; they c n then be oper ted s p rt of the new ALMEMO® Blue-
tooth wireless network. Per CPU up to seven me suring instruments c n be lin-
ked up vi sl ve modules nd then be sc nned from the PC vi just one COM
interf ce. It is lso possible to c sc de further ALMEMO® CPU modules or devi-
ce CPUs with plug-in sl ve module (router) nd thus extend the oper ting r n-
ge or incre se the number of links. A bre k in ny such link utom tic lly trig-
gers n ttempt to re-est blish it. The number of wireless links th t c n be ope-
r ted t the s me time is virtu lly infinite; they c use no mutu l interference.
The e siest w y to connect to the PC is to use the PC’s link to the device CPU;
ll links c n then be configured nd monitored on the gr phics displ y.
Or, ltern tively, the PC link c n be provided by USB-CPU module; this too is
preconfigured with n ALMEMO® sl ve module nd c n m n ge up to seven
sl ves. The ALMEMO® CPU module c n lso be used to provide wireless
link from one ALMEMO® device to the next ( device link) or to m ximum 7
other ALMEMO® devices. The first link per CPU functions utom tic lly; ll
further links must be ctiv ted using the AMR-Control softw re.
Norm lly s sl ve the univers l plug-in Bluetooth sl ve modules c n be used;
however, there re lso sl ve me suring instruments, comp ct nd utono-
mous, with n intern l Bluetooth module; nd there is even n option with inte-
gr ted temper ture nd humidity sensor.

6. OPERATING WITH THE BLUETOOTH DEVICE CPU
With the device CPU (ZA2719-BC) the t sk of oper ting Bluetooth link is e sy
nd re dily underst nd ble. All links c n be configured vi the computer key-
bo rd nd displ y. Sl ve modules c n be p ired with the CPU very e sily by
simply plugging them in. All links c n be est blished quickly, e sily, nd reli bly.
6.1 Putting into service
1. Plug slave module (ZA1719-BT1XS) for the PC link in t socket A1
on the first ALMEMO® device, switch the ALMEMO® device on, nd set
the device ddress prefer bly to G01 (corresponds to connection 1).
2. If required plug further slave modules onto other ALMEMO® devices
s bove, switch on, nd set the device ddresses ccordingly.
3. Before plugging the USB c ble into the computer inst ll the USB driver
from the enclosed CD. In Device M n ger check the COM port used
by the c ble ´Silicon L bs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COMx)´.
4. Connect one end of U B data supply cable ZA1919-DKU5 to the DC
socket (2) on the device CPU (ZA2719-BC) nd the other to USB
socket on the computer. Or, ltern tively, power the CPU vi the
m ins unit connected t the DC socket or from b tteries nd use ny
st nd rd d t c ble between socket A1 (1) nd the computer. (s 6.2)
5. To switch the device CPU ON press ON PROG Menu All connections
item 1 should lre dy be prepopul ted with the PIN code for the sl ve
module in question.
6. If no PIN code ppe rs or if links re to be est blished to other sl ves,
the PIN codes for the sl ves in question must be entered one by one.
(s. 6.5.1; 6.4.2) Or, ltern tively, the sl ve modules c n, one by one s
e ch link is selected, be plugged in t socket A1 nd be p ired by
pressing the PAIR key. The v rious links c n then be ctiv ted from
top to bottom by pressing the ON key. E ch link will now be ctiv ted
with the n me or design tion ppe ring fter the ssoci ted PIN code;
the tick symbol Ø will indic te e ch link successfully est blished.
7. Once ll the ALMEMO® devices h ve been set to the v rious device
ddresses, the chosen data acquisition software (e.g. WinControl)
c n be l unched. For this purpose the b ud r te (def ult 9600 b ud)
nd the device ddresses must be entered in the COM port settings
for the USB connection (see bove). All devices nd ll me suring
points should now be detected utom tic lly; if so, me suring oper -
tion c n now be st rted.
8. If configur tion f ils to function s described here, it often helps if the
CPU is simply switched OFF nd then ON g in. If cert in modules
re not detected, this m y be bec use the oper ting r nge h s been
exceeded. Try reducing the dist nce or using repe ters; or try using
c ble for the wireless modules nd re- ligning.

6.2 Connecting the Bluetooth device CPU
To connect the device CPU to the PC the st nd rd procedure is to plug USB
d t c ble ZA1919-DKU5 with integr ted power supply in t the DC socket. Ho-
wever, for d t tr nsmission purposes, ll other ALMEMO® d t c bles (RS232,
USB, Ethernet, RS422) re lso suit ble. These must be plugged in t socket
A1. In this c se n ddition l m ins unit will usu lly be required t socket DC.(s.

6.3 Power supply
Power c n be supplied to the Bluetooth CPU in ny of the following w ys :

6.3.1 External power supply
Since the Bluetooth CPU is usu lly oper ted directly on the PC, USB c ble ZA
1919-DKU5 (included) is the most suit ble w y of connecting the interf ce nd
supplying power t the s me time vi the DC socket (2). Or, ltern tively, com-
bined connection c n lso be provided to the ALMEMO® network vi ALMEMO®
connector ZA 5099-FSV. Other d t c bles (RS232, optic fiber, Ethernet)
should be plugged in t socket A1 (1); m ins d pter (e.g. ZA 1312-NA8, 12
V / 1 A) should be connected to the DC socket. An ALMEMO® connector (ZA
1000-FSV) c n lso be used t this socket to directly connect DC volt ge of 5
to 30 V (minimum 0.2 A).
6.3.2 Battery operation and supply voltage monitoring
The CPU c n be powered vi 3 AA lk line b tteries but for limited period only.
B sic current consumption is pprox. 35 mA; this gives n oper ting period of up
to 80 hours. However, if displ y illumin tion is switched on, this period will be re-
duced to pprox. 45 hours. The v il ble oper ting volt ge is displ yed in the
device configur tion, thus llowing the user to ssess the oper ting period re-
m ining. (see 6.5.4)
As soon s the rem ining b ttery c p city drops to pprox. 10 percent, the b t-
tery symbol ´´µµµµµµµµµ¶ in the softkey b r of the displ y will st rt to fl sh nd displ y il-
lumin tion will switch off. If the b tteries re completely disch rged the device
itself will switch off. To repl ce old b tteries first unscrew the b ttery comp rt-
ment cover (5) on the re r of the device.

Power supply
6.3.3 witching ON / OFF, reinitialization
To switch the device ON briefly press nd rele se the key ON (4) loc ted in
the middle of the keyp d; to switch the device OFF press the key ON nd hold
down.
If interference (e.g. electrost tic) or m lfunction (e.g. b ttery f ilure) c uses
the device to beh ve bnorm lly, it c n be reiniti lized; to do so press key F2 .
when switching on. This will restore ll settings to f ctory def ult st tus; i.e. ll
connection d t is deleted. Or, ltern tively, it m y be possible to remedy cer-
t in connection problems by initi ting limited reset; to do this, press key F1 .
when switching on; this merely de ctiv tes the connections. If this limited re-
set is used, connections must be re ctiv ted - if possible from top to bottom.
6.4 Display and operation of the CPU
The Bluetooth CPU incorpor tes gr phics dis-
pl y (3) nd keyp d (4) for the purposes of
configuring the device nd oper ting ll links.
These re listed in the m in menu together with
e ch ssoci ted st tus.
6.4.1 Function keys

6.5 Menus

menu selection screen the menu items “Connection configuration” nd “Device confi-
guration” c n be selected (s. 6.5.2).

Direct pairing
The quickest nd most reli ble w y to ppend sl ve module to the list of
links is to plug it in briefly t socket A1 on the CPU. When PROG , ▲ / ▼
re pressed the ssoci ted link will be selected utom tic lly.
When softkey <PAIR> is ctu ted the CPU progr ms the PIN code nd h rd-
w re ddress of the connected sl ve module to this connection ch nnel (PIN
code fl shes).
Old Bluetooth modules ZA 1709-BT1 nd -BT2 c nnot be p ired
utom tic lly bec use they h ve no integr ted microcontroller. Nor
c n they be progr mmed nd c nnot therefore output n me but
only the type design tion s. 6.5.3.

Putting a link into service
To put link into service the sl ve module is plugged in t socket A1 on the
ppropri te me suring instrument nd this is switched on.
The CPU then se rches utom tic lly for the sl ve module on the b sis of
the PIN code entered nd, if pplic ble, the h rdw re ddress ssigned.

6.5.4.1 Baud rate, data format
On le ving the f ctory the b ud r te for ll interf ce modules is progr mmed to
9600 b ud. To void unnecess ry problems when networking sever l devices
together the b ud r te should not be ltered; inste d, the computer should be
set to m tch. However, it is possible in the ´B ud r te´ function to enter v -

7. OPERATING WITH BLUETOOTH CPU MODULE
There is convenient ltern tive to the PC link with device CPU, n mely the
combin tion of USB-CPU module with ALMEMO® sl ve module. To network
ALMEMO® devices together device link is needed; this comprises n ALME-
MO® CPU module nd n ALMEMO® sl ve module. E ch of these two precon-
figured links c n be exp nded to up to 7 sl ves.
7.1 PC link with U B-CPU module
PC link ZA1719-BPVU, comprising USB-CPU module ZA1719-BCU nd AL-
MEMO® sl ve module ZA1719-BT1XS, is lre dy p ired; p rt from inst lling
the USB driver it requires no further configur tion steps; (see enclosed instruc-
tions).
The USB-CPU module is connected t USB socket on the computer nd the
ALMEMO® sl ve module is connected t socket A1 on n ALMEMO® me su-
ring instrument; the link is est blished utom tic lly nd is re dy for use s
soon s the yellow LEDs on both sides light up continuously. The me suring
instrument c n now be ccessed by the computer vi its device ddress nd
the correct b ud r te (def ult 9600 b ud).
Power to the USB module is supplied vi the USB interf ce; power to the sl ve
module is supplied vi the ALMEMO® device.
7.2 Device link with ALMEMO® CPU module
To implement wireless link between two ALMEMO® devices device link
ZA1719-BNV is needed; this comprises n ALMEMO® CPU module ZA1719-
BC nd n ALMEMO® sl ve module ZA1719-BT1XS.
The Bluetooth modules re lre dy p ired nd re used like network ch n-
nel; the CPU module is connected t socket A2 on the first me suring instru-
ment ( s seen from the PC) nd the sl ve module is connected t socket A1
on the second me suring instrument. Since such modules c n lso receive
their power supply from the devices, these should wherever possible be sup-
plied from extern l sources (e.g. using m ins d pters) in order to ensure un-
interrupted oper tion. When the devices re switched ON the link is
est blished utom tic lly nd is re dy for use s soon s the yellow LEDs on
both sides light up continuously. Device links c n be e sily c sc ded without
ny further configur tion steps required; this extends oper ting r nges sever l
times over. However when me sured d t is sc nned by the WinControl soft-
w re ttention should be p id not only to the correct b ud r te setting (def ult
9600 b ud) nd correct device ddressing but lso to longer del ys; this is be-
c use comm nds nd responses c nnot be tr nsmitted from device to device
simult neously - only consecutively.

7.3 Expanding with ALMEMO® slave modules
All CPU modules re ble to est blish not only the first link with the p ired sl -
ve but lso six more links vi ddition l ALMEMO® sl ve modules. Since this
c nnot be m n ged vi the keyp d nd displ y ( s is the c se with the device
CPU), the AMR-Control softw re is required. In the m in menu select ´Blue-
tooth module links´.
First the PIN code for the CPU must be entered nd then the list must be up-
d ted. All d t for the CPU nd for the p ired sl ves should now ppe r. To
ppend further sl ves these must be plugged in t socket A1 on the new AL-
MEMO® devices, their PIN codes must be entered in the t ble, nd then ctiv -
ted ( s f r s possible from top to bottom). B sic lly configur tion is the s me
s when putting the device CPU into service.
8. ALMEMO® BLUETOOTH LAVE DEVICE 2790
The ALMEMO® sl ve modules discussed so f r re ide-
lly suit ble for wide v riety of pplic tions bec use
they c n be connected to virtu lly ny ALMEMO® me -
suring instrument. However, ALMEMO® Bluetooth sl ve
device MA2790-BT1XS is speci lly designed for use
with sensor with Bluetooth module lre dy integr ted.
As n option this device c n lso be fitted with tempe-
r ture / humidity sensor or with n intern l bsolute
pressure sensor for tmospheric pressure. This device
c n be used in pl ce of ny termin l with sl ve module
- except for the f ct th t no CPU modules c n be
connected for the purposes of further network exp nsi-
on. It c n be powered by b tteries or vi m ins unit. .

9. TARTING DATA EXCHANGE
Once ll links re up nd running properly d t exch nge c n be st rted. As in
ny network the first step is to ensure th t e ch sl ve device h s unique d-
dress ssigned. (see M nu l, Section 5.3)
E ch link c n be individu lly tested using the AMR-Control softw re by ddres-
sing from the termin l. (see M nu l 6.2.1)
However, cyclic sc nning in the network c n only be performed using the Win-
Control softw re. In st r-configured network ll devices should be re ched
str ight w y. For network links involving sever l st ges the switchover time
must be prolonged by 200 ms per st ge; this c n be done in menu <Settings -
M n ge connections - Properties - Extended - ALMEMO® (2)>.
10. TROUBLE- HOOTING
The Bluetooth modules c n be configured nd progr mmed in m ny different
w ys. It is possible, th nks to this technology, to network m ny different devi-
ces. However, wireless links nd their prop g tion beh vior re difficult to s-
sess. Given this uncert inty the system m y not lw ys beh ve quite s ex-
pected. The c use of such unexpected beh vior is only very r rely device
defect; usu lly the c use is incorrect oper tion by the user, n inv lid setting,
or tempor ry r dio interference. In such event try to cle r the problem or to t
le st pinpoint nd isol te its c use with the id of the following tests.
Error On initi l st rt-up the CPU rem ins in se rch st tus nd no link is de-
tected. (All displ y “S” nd / or the yellow sl ve LEDs continue fl -
shing).
Remedy Are ll sl ves switched ON, re they plugged in t the correct socket
A1, do the PIN codes m tch? De ctiv te ll links (F1 reset see
6.3.3). Switch the CPU OFF nd then b ck ON g in. Re ctiv te the
sl ves one fter the other.
Error On initi l st rt-up the CPU rem ins in se rch st tus; some links re
est blished but not ll; (some re m rked with tick (Ø) but others
with n “F”; some yellow sl ve LEDs light up continuously but others
continue fl shing).
Remedy Are the missing sl ves switched ON, re they plugged in t the cor-
rect socket A1, do the PIN codes m tch ? In the event of problem
ffecting the oper ting r nge, try moving the sl ve ne rer or try using
c ble nd re- ligning. Once error h s been remedied, switch the
CPU OFF nd then b ck ON g in.
