DonotoperatetheSierraWirelessAirLinkPinPointXinany
aircraft,whethertheaircraftisonthegroundorinflight.In
aircraft,theSierraWirelessAirLinkPinPointXMUSTBE
POWEREDOFF.Whenoperating,theSierraWirelessAirLink
PinPointXcantransmitsignalsthatcouldinterferewith
variousonboardsystems.
Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the
aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. Sierra Wireless AirLink
PinPoint X may be used at this time.

provider
ThePinPointXusesyourcellularproviderasanISP(Internet
ServiceProvider)toconnectyoutotheInternet.
Steps of a connection:
1. WhenyourPinPointXispoweredon,itautomatically
searchesforcellularserviceusingHSUPA/HSDPA.
2. YourPinPointXestablishesaPPP(PointtoPointProtocol
or“dial”upconnection)linktotheyourcellularprovider
network,alsocalledregisteringonthenetwork,and
receivesanIPaddress.
3. WhenyourPinPointXhasreceiveditsIPaddressfrom
yourcellularprovider,aconnectiontotheInternetorthe
cellularnetworkisalsoavailableforcomputersorother
devicesconnecteddirectlytothePinPointX.

ThePinPointXwillperformroutingforallinternettrafficto
andfromthecomputersorotherenddevicse.
WiththeRavenXEinEthernetPublicmode,onlyonedevice
connectedtotheEthernetportwillreceivethepublicIP
addresswhichistheoneprovidedbythecellularnetwork.In
EthernetPrivatemode,withahuborswitchconnectedtothe
Ethernetport,theRavenXEwillprovideNATforarangeof
computersorotherdevicesconnectedtotheswitchorhuband
Internetaccesstoallofthem.
Dynamic vs. Static IP Addresses
Therearetwotypesofaddressesonnetworks:dynamicand
static.
•Dynamicaddressesareassignedona“needtohave”basis.
YourPinPointXmightnotalwaysreceivethesame
addresseachtimeitconnectswithyourcellularprovider.
•Staticaddressesarepermanentlyassignedtoaparticular
accountandwillalwaysbeusedwheneveryourPinPoint
XconnectstotheInternet.TheIPaddresswillnotbegiven
