Ethernet (PoE), and an overvie and procedures for managing stacks.

Release Notes
The OmniSwitch 6850E Series Getting Started Guide provides all the information you need to get your
s itch up and running the first time. This guide provides information on unpacking the s itch, rack
mounting the s itch, installing stacking cables, installing backup po er supplies, unlocking access
control, setting the s itch’s IP address, setting up a pass ord, and setting up stacks. It also includes
succinct overvie information on fundamental aspects of the s itch, such as hard are LEDs, the soft-
are directory structure, stacking, CLI conventions, and eb-based management.
At this time you should also familiarize yourself ith the Release Notes that accompanied your s itch.
This document includes important information on feature limitations that are not included in other user
guides.

ware Users Guide. This guide provide specifications, illustrations, and descriptions of all hard are
components—e.g., chassis, stacking and stacking cables, backup po er supplies, etc. It also includes steps
for common procedures, such as removing and installing s itch modules.
The OmniSwitch AOS Release 6 Switch Management Guide is the primary user guide for the basic soft-
are features on a single s itch. This guide contains information on the s itch directory structure, basic
file and directory utilities, s itch access security, SNMP, and eb-based management. It is recommended
that you read this guide before connecting your s itch to the net ork.

1 OmniSwitch 6850E Series
The OmniS itch 6850E Series are an advanced fixed configuration family of stackable Ethernet s itches.
These s itches provide ire rate layer-2 for arding and layer-3 routing ith advanced services, effective
availability, resiliency, and security features and are ideal for the follo ing net ork applications:
•Enterprise orkgroups/LAN iring closets
•Edge deployments and branch offices
•L3 aggregation/distribution layer s itches in three-tier net orks
•Small enterprise core s itching
•Quality of service (QoS) for mission critical applications
•Data center server clusters

Availability Features
The s itch provides a broad variety of availability features. Availability features are hard are and
soft are-based safeguards that help to prevent the loss of data flo in the unlikely event of a subsystem
failure. In addition, some availability features allo users to maintain or replace hard are components
ithout po ering off the s itch or interrupting s itch operations. Combined, these features provide added
resiliency and help to ensure that the s itch or virtual chassis is consistently available for day-to-day
net ork operations.
Hard are-related availability features include:
•Software Rollback
•Backup Power Supplies
•Hot Swapping
•Hardware Monitoring
Software Rollback
Soft are rollback (also referred to as image rollback) essentially allo s the OmniS itch to return to a
prior “last kno n good” version of soft are in the event of a system soft are problem. The s itch
controls soft are rollback through its resilient directory structure design (i.e., /flash/working and /flash/
certified).
For detailed information on the soft are rollback feature, as ell as the s itch’s /flash/working and
/flash/certified directories, refer to the “Managing CMM Directory Content” chapter in the OmniSwitch
AOS Release 6 Series Switch Management Guide.
Backup Power Supplies
The s itches support an optional backup po er supply. This po er supply is connected to the rear of the
unit and provides redundant chassis po er on a 1:1 basis. There is a po er shelf provided ith the unit
that slides into the rear of the chassis and is used to hold the po er supplies.
Backup po er supplies operate in active standby mode. If the primary po er supply fails unexpectedly,
the backup po er supply automatically takes up the full po er load ithout disrupting the s itch.

Hot Swapping
Hot s apping refers to the action of adding, removing, or replacing components ithout po ering off
s itches or disrupting other components.This feature facilitates hard are upgrades and maintenance and
allo s users to easily replace components in the unlikely event of hard are failure.

•Backup po er supply
•Backup po er supply connector cables
•Transceivers
For instructions on hot s apping backup po er supplies, refer to Chapter 2, “OmniS itch 6850E Series
Chassis and Hard are Components.”.
Note: The OmniS itch 6850E chassis fans are not hot s appable or field replaceable. If there is a failure
of any of the fans the entire chassis must be replaced. Please contact Service & Support for chassis
replacement instructions. Replacement time is typically 5 days ith expedited service available.
Hardware Monitoring
Automatic Monitoring
Automatic monitoring refers to the s itch’s built-in sensors that automatically monitor operations. If an
error is detected (e.g., over-threshold temperature), the s itch immediately sends a trap to the user. The
trap is displayed on the console in the form of a text error message. (In the case of an over-threshold
temperature condition, the chassis displays an amber TMP LED in addition to sending a trap.)
LEDs
LEDs, hich provide visual status information, are provided on the chassis front panel. LEDs are used to
indicate conditions such as hard are and soft are status, temperature errors, link integrity, data flo , etc.
For detailed LED descriptions, refer to Chapter 2, “OmniS itch 6850E Series Chassis and Hard are
Components.”
User-Driven Monitoring
User-driven hard are monitoring refers to CLI commands that are entered by the user in order to access
the current status of hard are components. The user enters “sho ” commands that output information to
the console. Monitoring information for chassis components, such as the optional back up po er supply,
chassis temperature sensor, and chassis fans is provided in Chapter 2, “OmniS itch 6850E Series Chassis
and Hard are Components.” The sho commands for all the features are described in detail in the
OmniSwitch CLI Reference Guide.
