LithiumBatteryFires
Lithiumbatteries arebecoming verypopular for powering the controland power systemsinour models.Thisistruebecauseof their veryhighenergyden-
sity(amp-hrs/wt. ratio)comparedtoNiCd’sor otherbatteries.Withhighenergy comesincreased riskintheir use.TheprincipalriskisFIRE whichcan
result fromimproper charging, crashdamage, orshortingthe batteries. All vendors ofthesebatterieswarntheircustomersofthisdanger andrecommend
extremecaution intheir use.Inspiteofthis, many fireshaveoccurredasaresult oftheuseofLithiumPolymer batteriesresultinginloss ofmodels,auto-
mobiles, andotherproperty. Homesand garages andworkshopshavealsoburned. Alithiumbatteryfireisveryhot (several thousanddegrees) andisan
excellent initiator for ancillary(resulting) fires.Fireoccursdue tocontact betweenLithiumand oxygeninthe air.Itdoesnotneed anyothersource ofigni-
tion,or fueltostart,and burnsalmost explosively.Thesebatteriesmustbeusedinamannerthat precludesancillaryfire.Thefollowingisrecommended:
1. Store, andcharge,inafireproofcontainer; neverinyour model.
2. Charge inaprotected area devoidofcombustibles.Alwaysstandwatchoverthechargingprocess.Neverleave the charging processunattended
3. Intheevent ofdamagefromcrashes, etc, carefullyremovetoasafeplace for atleastahalf hour toobserve. Physicallydamaged cellscoulderupt into
flameandaftersufficient timetoensuresafety, shouldbediscardedinaccordancewiththe instructionswhich camewiththebatteries.Never attempt to
charge acellwithphysicaldamage, regardlessof howslight.
4.Alwaysuse chargersdesignedforthespecificpurpose, preferablyhavingafixed setting for your particular pack.Manyfiresoccur inusing
selectable/adjustablechargersimproperlyset. Never attempttochargeLithiumcellswithacharger which isnotspecificallydesigned for charging Lithium
cells. Never usechargersdesignedforNickelCadmiumbatteries.
5. Onlyusechargingsystemsthat monitor andcontrol the chargestateofeachcell inthepack. Unbalancedcellscanleadtodisasterif it permitsovercharge
of asinglecellinthe pack.Ifthe batteriesshowany sign ofswelling, discontinuecharging andremovethemtoasafeplaceoutside astheycoulderuptinto
flames.
6. Mostimportant: NEVER PLUG INABATTERYAND LEAVEITTOCHARGE UNATTENDEDOVERNIGHT.Seriousfireshaveresultedfromthis
practice.
7. Donotattempt tomake your ownbatterypacksfromindividualcells.
ThesebatteriesCANNOTbehandledandcharged casuallysuchas hasbeenthepracticeforyearswithother typesof batteries.Theconsequenceof this
practicecan beveryseriousresultinginmajor propertydamage and/or personalharm.
