Voltage Precautions
The computers contain line voltages. Disconnect all power to the computer before you install or remove
components.
Load a CompactFlash Card
(Cat. Nos. 6189V-CFSSD8GB and 6189V-CFSSD16GB)
Follow these steps to install a CompactFlash (CF) card in the bottom CF card slot.
1. Loosen the screw that secures the CF card slot cover (A).
2. Open the CF card slot cover (B).
If necessary, remove an inserted card by pushing the button on the hinge side.
3. Insert the new CF card into the slot until it is firmly seated (C).
4. Close the CFcard slot cover (D).
5. Tighten the CF card slot cover screw (E).
Replace a Solid-state Drive
(Cat. Nos. 6189X-128GBSSD and 6189X-256GBSSD)
Follow these steps to replace a solid-state drive (SSD) tray in the SSD bay on the side of the computer.
1. Loosen the screw that secures the slot cover of the drive bay (A).
2. Loosen the screw that secures the drive bay lever (battery).
3. Open the drive bay lever (C).
4. Pull out the existing SSD tray (D).
5. Push in the new SSD tray (E).
6. Close the drive bay lever (F).
7. Tighten the screw that secures the drive bay lever (G).
8. Tighten the screw that secures the slot cover of the drive bay (H).
Tools for Component Replacement
The following tools are required for component replacement:
• #2 cross-head screwdriver
• Anti-static wriststrap
• Properly grounded tools and equipment
Remove the Rear Cover of the Computer
Follow these steps to remove the rear cover (the integrated display computer is shown).
1. Shut down the computer and all peripherals that are connected to it.
2. To avoid exposure to high energy levels, disconnect all cables from power outlets.
3. Loosen the three screws that secure the rear cover (A).
4. Open the cover (B) and detach it from the chassis (C).
Reinstall the Rear Cover of the Computer
Follow these steps to reinstall the rear cover.
1. Verify that all components are installed according to instructions.
2. Verify that no toolsor loose parts are left inside the computer.
3. Reinstall any expansion boards, peripherals, and system cables that were previously removed.
4. Reattach the rear cover to the chassis (D).
5. Close the cover (E).
6. Tighten the three screws to secure the rear cover (F).
7. Reconnect all external cables and power to the computer.
8. To start the computer, press the power switch.
Computer Memory Modules
The computers have two dual-channel DDR3 SO-DIMM slots that support up to 16 GB maximum system
memory.

SHOCK HAZARD: Disconnect all power to the computer before you remove components.
Failure to disconnect power can result in severe electrical shock to an individual or electrostatic
discharge (ESD) damage to the computer and components.
WARNING: TheCF cardsloton the bottomside ofall computer models is hot-swappable but only
in a nonhazardous location. You can insert or remove a card from this slot while the computer is
running.
When the computer is used in a hazardous location, do not insert or remove a card in the bottom
CF card slot unless power has been switched off.
ATTENTION: When properly seated, more than 80% of the CF card easily inserts into the slot
before you encounter resistance. If you encounter resistance sooner,then remove the card, rotate
it 180°, and reinsert.
Do not force the card into the slot or you can damage the connector pins.
IMPORTANT For computers in ATEX and IECEx applications, the CF card slot cover screw (step E in the
illustration) must be hand-tightened and verified as secure.
WARNING: The SSD bay on the side of all computer models is not hot-swappable. You must first
shut down the computer before you can insert or remove an SSD tray from this bay.
Do not connect or disconnect components unless power has been switched off and the area is
known to be nonhazardous.

IMPORTANT For computers in ATEX and IECEx applications, both screws for the drive bay (steps G and
H in the illustration) must be hand-tightened and verified as secure.
IMPORTANT Computer performance is optimized when both slots are populated with memory
modules of the same capacity. All 6181X computers ship with a dual memory module
configuration.
All memory module upgrades ship with heatsinks. These memory modules replace any
existing memory configurations, including modules without heatsinks.

Replace or Add Memory Modules (Cat. No. 6189X-16GDDR3)
Follow these steps to replace or add memory modules.
1. Remove the computer cover as detailed in Remove the Rear Cover of the Computer on page 2.
2. Locate the memory modules on the motherboard.
3. Remove the existing memory modules.
a. Use your thumbs or two fingers to push open the lock levers, which release the memory module from its
slot for easy removal. See the illustration in step 4.
b. Gently pull out the memory module to remove it from its slot.
c. Place the memory module on a static-dissipating work surface or inside an anti-static bag.
4. Install the new memory modules with heatsinks.
a. Hold the memory module by its edges as you remove it
from its anti-static bag.
b. Orient the module so the notch on its bottom edge
aligns with the keyed surface of the DIMM slot. See the
illustration at right.
The keyed surface is off center to assist the correct
alignment.
c. Press the module fully into the slot to engage the lock
levers.
5. Reinstall the computer cover as detailed in Reinstall the
Rear Cover of the Computer on page 2.
Install the PCI Riser Card (Cat. No. 6189X-PCIRISER)
Follow these steps to install the PCI riser card.
1. Disconnect power from the computer.
2. Remove the computer cover as detailed in Remove the Rear Cover of the Computer on page 2.
3. Remove the one screw that secures the slot cover.
4. Remove the slot cover.
5. Store the cover and its screw for reassembly later.
6. Remove the three screws that secure the add-in card tray.
For the screw locations, see the figure in step 10.
7. Remove the add-in card tray.
8. Remove the two screws that connect the factory-supplied PCIe riser card to the add-in card tray.
9. With the two screws that you removed, connect the PCI riser card to the add-in card tray.
10.Replace the add-in card tray.
Tighten its three screws in the order shown in the following figure so that the PCI riser card is connected
securely to the motherboard.
11.Reinstall the computer cover as detailed in Reinstall the Rear Cover of the Computer on page 2.
Install the Sun Shield (Cat. No. 6189X-SUNSHIELD)
To install the sun shield, the following items are needed:
• A cleaning solution of 50:50 isopropyl alcohol and water, and a clean cloth
• A small flathead screwdriver
• A 4 mm screwdriver or hex key
• A torque wrench to tighten the six M4x8 screws

IMPORTANT Use an anti-static wriststrap that is connected to the work surface, and properly
grounded tools and equipment.
Hold all memory modules by their sides to avoid touching the contacts on the bottom or
circuitry on the boards.
IMPORTANT For hazardous locations, only the integrated display computer with a PCAP touch screen
and non-display computers can use this PCI riser card and PCI add-in cards.

IMPORTANT Use an anti-static wriststrap that is connected to the work surface, and properly
grounded tools and equipment.
Hold any card by its edges to avoid touching the contacts on the bottom or circuitry on
the board.
ATTENTION: Do not discard the slot cover or its screw. If the add-in card is removed in the future,
the slot cover must be reinstalled to maintain agency access requirements.

Follow these steps to install the sun shield.
1. With a small screwdriver, remove the screw overlay label above the integrated display to expose the six screw
holes.
2. With the cleaning solvent and cloth, clean the whole perimeter of the integrated display where the sun
shield is to be installed.
3. Align the holes on the sun shield with the six screw holes.
4. Install the six supplied M4x8 screws loosely by hand; do not hand tighten them.
5. To access each side of the sun shield, tilt the sun shield backwards.
6. Remove the adhesive strip backing from each side of the sun shield.
7. Align both sides of the sun shield so they are completely against the surface on each side of the integrated
display.
8. After both sides are aligned, press down firmly to affix each side of the sun shield to the computer.
9. With a 4 mm screwdriver or hexkey, tighten the six screws.
For best results, tighten each screw to a torque of 6…8 lb•in (0.7…0.9 N•m).

IMPORTANT For the best adhesion results, apply thesun shield when the temperature is 10 °C (50 °F)
or higher.
In temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F), the adhesive strips on the sun shield become too
firm to adhere readily.
