Overview
The AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Gigabit Ethernet Multimode E tender (Figure 1)
allows you to e tend the ma imum distance of standard multimode fiber cable
for 1000Base-SX Gigabit Ethernet beyond the distance limitations imposed by
the current IEEE 802.3z standard. With this unit, you can e tend your network
up to 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) over 50/125 or 62.5/125 micron multimode fiber
optic cabling.

Gigabit Ethernet Technology and FDDI Technology
Because of its high-speed and fault-tolerant features, fiber distributed data
interface (FDDI) has frequently been used to build backbone networks.
However, the growth of new applications that require e tremely high rates of
throughput, greater than that allowed by FDDI, have emerged and have
e ceeded the capabilities of FDDI to handle the load. E amples of high demand
network applications include streaming audio and video content.
The solution for many networks is to migrate from FDDI to Gigabit Ethernet,
which offers the same resiliency as FDDI but with greater bandwidth
capability. However, one of the principal disadvantages to migrating from
FDDI to Gigabit Ethernet has been the cost of replacing the legacy multimode
fiber optic cabling of the FDDI topology to one designed for Gigabit Ethernet,
typically single-mode fiber. Currently, Gigabit Ethernet transmission on
multimode fiber is limited to a ma imum of 550 meters (1500 feet) on 50/125
micron fiber and 275 meters (754 feet) on 62.5/125 micron. In network
configurations requiring greater distances, a network administrator has been
confronted with the choice of either retaining FDDI and its lower bandwidth or
replacing the e isting multimode fiber cable with single-mode cable, typically
at great cost.
The AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Gigabit Ethernet Multimode E tender greatly
simplifies the migration by allowing the network administrator to install
Gigabit Ethernet while maintaining the e isting multimode fiber cable. With
this unit, which must be used in pairs, the network administrator can e tend
the distance of Gigabit Ethernet transmission over multimode fiber cable from
the current limitation of 550 meters (1500 feet) to 2 kilometers (1.24 miles). In
many situations, this eliminates the need of replacing the e isting multimode
fiber cable by enabling the network administrator to use the legacy cable
system.
Figure 2 illustrates a network that incorporates two AT-EX1001SC/GM1
Gigabit Multimode E tenders. The units interconnect an AT-8224XL Fast
Ethernet Switch with an AT-A15/SX E pansion Module and an AT-9006
Gigabit Ethernet Switch.

Installing the AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode Extender
The AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender is installed and used in pairs.
The units do not support the use of any media converters in the configuration.
The pair of e tenders is connected directly to the host and to each other. The
units are easy to install and do not require any software configuration or
software management.
Planning the Installation
When installing an AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender, do not e ceed
the ma imum cable distances intended for its media type. Refer to Table 2 for
a description of the standards (connectors), media, and ma imum distances for
each port.

Installing the Unit
To install the AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender on a desktop, perform
the following steps:
1. Remove all components from the shipping package and store the
packaging material in a safe location.
2. Locate a level, secure surface for the unit.
Warning
The power cord is used as a disconnection device. To de-energize
equipment, disconnect the power cord. ! 10
3. Apply AC power to the AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender by
plugging the power cord into the AC power connector on the front of the
unit and plugging the other end into a wall outlet. Check that the Power
LED illuminates.
Caution
Do not remove the dust covers from the fiber optic ports on the unit until
you are ready to connect the cables. Dust contamination can adversely
impact the operation of the ports.
4. Remove the dust cover from Port 1 (P1) on the AT-EX1001SC/GM1
Multimode E tender.
5. Connect the appropriate fiber optic cable to Port 1 (P1) on the Gigabit
Ethernet multimode e tender. The cable should connect the TX port of one
AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender to the RX port of the other
multimode e tender.
6. Remove the dust cover from Port 2 (P2) on the AT-EX1001SC/GM1
Multimode E tender.
7. Connect one end of the fiber optic cable to Port 2 (P2) and the other end to
the host. The cable should connect the TX port of the e tender to the RX
port of the host device. Similarly, the RX port of the e tender should
connect to the TX port of the host device.
8. Check that the LEDs on the unit. Refer to Table 1 for a description of the
functions of each LED.

10
Troubleshooting
This sections contains troubleshooting recommendations should you encounter
any problems with the unit.
If the Power LED does not light up after connecting the AC power cord, do the
following:
❑Make sure that the power cord is securely connected to the front of the
AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender and that the other end is
securely connected to a power outlet.
❑Try using another power cord to see if power is supplied to the unit.
❑Check that the power outlet has power by connecting another device
to it.
If the PLL Lock and SC LEDs of Port 1 do not illuminate after connecting both
AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tenders, do the following:
❑Make sure that the power cords of both units are securely connected
to their power outlets and that power is being fed into the units.
❑Check the connections between units. The cable attached to the TX
port of one unit should connect to the RX port of the other unit.
❑Make sure that the entire network is functioning properly in case the
problem might lie beyond the unit.
If after connecting one of the units to the host device the PLL Lock and SC
LEDs of Port 2 fail to light up, do the following:
❑Make sure that both the host device and the AT-EX1001SC/GM1
Multimode E tender are powered up and functioning properly.
❑Check the connections between the AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode
E tender and the host device. The cable attached to the TX port on
AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode E tender should connect to the RX
port of the host. Likewise, the RX port of the unit should connect to the
TX port of the host device.
❑Check that the entire network is functioning properly in case the
problem might lie beyond the AT-EX1001SC/GM1 Multimode
E tender.
