1. Introduction
1.1 Product description
The altec ID Drive is a drive for PC Card storage media and supports all standard PC
Card ATA or RAM media and PC Card hard disks. The front of the ID Drive has a single
slot for PC Cards Type I, II or III.
The standard C I interface of the ID Drive makes it easy to connect to desktop PCs,
Macintosh computers, Notebooks and workstations. It allows rapid data transfer or
data exchange using exchangeable PC Card storage media.
The i-Drive is manufactured for industrial and commercial applications. It has all per-
formance features required by PCs, digital cameras, High Performance Embedded
ystems and portable computers and is designed for cost-saving and user-friendly
support of PC Card storage media.
1.2 Features
◆PC Card Drive in industrial-strength rugged metal desktop case with C I-2
interface (50-pin HD ub D connector)
◆uitable for all operating systems with C I support, for example Windows
95/98, NT, ME, 2000 and XP, M -DO , Linux, O /2 and Mac O
◆ingle slot for PC Card memory media such as RAM and ATA PC Cards or HDDs
in PC Card format (Type I to Type III)
◆Compatible with CompactFlash or mart Media Cards, MultiMediaCards,
D Cards, Microdrive miniature hard disks, Memory ticks or xD-Cards using
the appropriate PC Card adapter

(asynchronous)
◆imple, quick, compatible: easy installation, C I-2 interface, PC Card standard
◆Configurable with C I ID, terminator power and C I termination switches
◆Automatic recognition of the storage medium (PC Card ATA, RAM and linear
flash PC Cards) and memory capacity, even with unformatted PC Cards
1.3 Scope of delivery

2. Hardware installation
Please note the following when installing the ID Drive:
2.1 Power supply
Power is either provided by the supplied external plug in power supply or is taken from
the PC’s keyboard using the keyboard adapter (available as an accessory).
2.2 SCSI connection
Please use an appropriate SCSI cable to connect the ID Drive with your SCSI controller
or another SCSI device at your SCSI bus. The ID Drive uses an 50 pin Mini Sub D con
nector.
2.3 Configuring the SCSI address
Each of the maximum of 8 devices connected to the 8 Bit SCSI Bus must have a
unique SCSI address, also called SCSI ID. The SCSI address of the ID Drive is configured
with the Switches 1 to 3 as shown in the table:
1 = Switch ON (down) 0 = Switch OFF (up)
To avoid conflicts with other SCSI devices, make sure that each device has its own
unique SCSI ID.
➜Note: the SCSI controller itself is also a SCSI device and usually has the
SCSI ID 7. An internal SCSI hard disk often has the SCSI ID 0.
SCSI ID Switch 1 Switch 2 Switch 3
ID 0 000
ID 1 1 0 0
ID 2 0 1 0
ID 3 1 1 0
ID 4 0 0 1
ID 5* 1 0 1
ID 6 0 1 1
ID 7 111

2.4 SCSI termination
The SCSI devices which are located at the two ends of the SCSI bus must be termina-
ted. ll other devices must not be terminated.
The ID Drive should be always the last device in the SCSI bus. Therefore the SCSI ter-
mination should be always on.
Switch 6 enables or disables SCSI bus termination on the ID Drive as follows:
Switch 6
Termination on* Switch ON (down)
Termination off Switch OFF (up) * = Factory setting
2.5 Terminator power
One of the SCSI devices must provide the power supply for the termination, the so-
called terminator power.
Switch 5 is used to enable or disable the terminator power for the ID Drive. This is
normally unnecessary because terminator power is supplied by the SCSI controller.
If the SCSI controller or the other SCSI devices do not supply terminator power,
enable it as follows.
Switch 5
Terminator power on Switch ON (down)
Terminator power off* Switch OFF (up) * = Factory setting
2.6 Factory settings
The SCSI ID is 5 (Switch 1 = ON; Switch 2 = OFF; Switch 3 = ON).
Terminator power (Switch 5 = OFF) is disabled.
Termination (Switch 6 = ON) is enabled.
Switch 4 is reserved (Switch 4 = OFF).

3. Connectors
As shown in the figure, all connectors are available on the rear panel of the device:
4. Software installation
With most operating systems such as Windows 95/98, ME, NT 3.51/ .0, 2000, XP, OS/2,
Mac OS and Linux the ID Drive operates as a plug-and-play device. It should be detec-
ted automatically and no software installation is necessary.
Data e change with PC Card storage media functions without any problems between
different computer systems. Most e changeable media device drivers treat SCSI
e changeable media as e changeable hard disks, i.e. the media must be partitioned.
This is done with suitable partitioning or formatting programs.
5. Using the ID Drive
5.1 Inserting a PC Card
After completing installation of the ID Drive, insert a Type I,II or III PC Drive into the slot
with the connector end first. The correct way of inserting the card is also shown by a
small arrow or triangle on the label of the card.
You must only insert or remove PC cards when the LED is not lit. If you try to access the
drive when there is no PC card inserted, you will get the error message “Not ready”,
analogously to a diskette drive when the diskette is missing.

Both the size and the type of the inserted memory media are detected automatically.
➜The ID Drive supports cards of all types ( C Cards Type I to III or CompactFlash
Cards, Microdrive miniature hard disks, Smart Media Cards, MultiMediaCards,
SD Cards, Memory Sticks or xD-Cards with an appropriate C Card adapter). It
also detects SRAM cards automatically. Linear Flash cards can only be read if
they have been formatted with a DOS file system. The ID Drive cannot write to
Linear Flash cards.
5.2 Removing a PC Card
ress the eject button to eject a C Card or a C Card adapter from the slot. Make
sure that the red LED on the front panel of the drive is not lit when you remove a
memory card.
