System Description
The N-725.2A PIFOC® Z-drive with NEXACT® linear motor provides 2 mm travel (closed-loop) in Z
axis, a resolution of 2 nm and features a linear encoder.

Intended Use
The N-725.2A is a laboratory device as defined by DIN EN 61010-1. It is intended to be used in
interior spaces and in an environment which is free of dirt, oil and lubricants.
Based on its design and realization, the N-725.2A Z-drive is intended for maximum pull forces of 10 N
and maximum push forces of 10 N. The N-725.2A Z-drive can be mounted horizontally or vertically.
The intended use of the N-725.2A is only possible in combination with suitable electronics that is
available from PI. The N-725.2A can be operated using the E-861.1A1 NEXACT® servo controller.

Safety Precautions
NOTICE
Damange due to manual displacement!
Manual displacement can cause irreparable damage to the piezo modules in the
NEXACT® linear motor.
Do not displace the moving platform of the PIFOC® Z-drive with NEXACT®
linear motor manually!
NOTICE
Fixed operation frequency for permanent operation!
For permanent operation of the drives do not exceed operation frequencies of
800 Hz.
NOTICE
Unsuitable cables!
Unsuitable cables can damage the electronics.
Only use cables from PI for connecting the N-725.2A to the electronics.
INFORMATION
Extended cables can affect the performance of the N-725.2A.
Do not use cable extensions. If you need longer cables, contact our customer
service department (p. 6).
Installation
Connecting the N-725.2A to a Protective Earth Conductor
NOTICE
Ground loops with double connection of protective earth conductor!
In the case of Z drives with Sub-D connectors, ground loops can occur when the Z
drive is grounded via its protective earth connection as well as by the shield of the
connection cable for the electronics.
If a ground loop occurs, contact our customer service department (p. 6).
The N-725.2A is grounded when it is connected to the piezo controller via its HD sub-D15m
connector. However, to comply with the 2004/108/EC, EMC Directive, a functional grounding is
required for potential equalization.

1. If necessary, fasten a suitable cable lug to the protective earth conductor.
2. Have the M4 screw, toothed washers and flat washers available.
3. As shown in the above figure: fasten one flat washer and one toothed washer
each above and below the protective earth conductor or its cable lug with the
screw on the protective earth connection of the N-725.2A.
4. Tighten the screw with a torque of 1.2 Nm to 1.5 Nm.
5. Make sure that the protective earth conductor of the N-725.2A is properly
connected with the existing protective earth system within your application at all
times.

Fasten the objective to the thread intended for this purpose.
For detailed instructions refer to the separate technical note P721T0002 for PIFOC®

Start-Up and Operation
General Notes on Start-Up and Operation
NOTICE
Uncontrolled oscillation!
Oscillations can cause irreparable damage to the Z-drive. Oscillations are indicated
by a humming and can result from the following causes:
The load and/or dynamics of operation differ too much from the calibration
settings.
The Z-drive is operated near its resonant frequency.
If you notice oscillations, stop the Z-drive immediately.

Maintenance
NOTICE
Misalignment from manipulating actuator!
The N-725.2A is maintenance-free and precisely aligned.
Do not try to manipulate or to open the N-725.2A.
Cleaning the N-725.2A
Prerequisites
You have disconnected the N-725.2A from the controller.
Cleaning the N-725.2A
Clean the surface of the N-725.2A with a towel that is lightly dampened with a mild cleanser or
disinfectant, with alcohol or with isopropanol.
Do not do any ultrasonic cleaning.
