1.2 Definition of Measurement Categories
CAT II: For measurements performed on circuits directly connected to
the electrical distribution system. Examples are measurements
onhouseholdappliancesorportabletools.
CAT III: For measurements performed in the building installation at
the distribution level such as on hardwired equipment in xed
installationandcircuitbreakers.
CAT IV: For measurements performed at the primary electrical supply
(<1000V) such as on primary overcurrent protection devices,
ripplecontrolunits,ormeters.

PRODUCT FEATURES
2.1 Description
The MR probes are designed to the meet the latest safety and perfor-
mancestandards.Twodierenthook-shapedjawsareoered,bothper-
mitting the user to “pry” into or “hook” onto cables (will accept 2 x 500
MCM)orsmallbusbars.
The MR series uses Hall eect technology. The electronics and batter-
iesareself-containedinthehandles.TheoutputoftheAC/DCprobesis
1mV/A.
WhentakingDCmeasurements,amechanicalDCzeroallowstheuserto
adjustforanyDCoset.Thereisnooutputltering-TrueRMSwithDC
componentsispossible.
Thephaseshiftisexcellent,makingtheMRserieswellsuitedforpower
andpowerqualityapplications.
ModelMR410measures400AAC(600Apeak),600ADC.
ModelMR520measures1000AAC(1500Apeak),1500ADC.
BoththeMR410andMR520haveproportionalmVoutputfordirectread-
ingsonmultimeters,recorders,loggersandotherinstrumentsaccepting

OPERATION
4.1 Making Measurements
• Plugtheprobeintothedisplaydevice(e.g.,DMM,logger).
Notethepolarityoftheprobeoutputbananaplugs(red=positive[+],
black=negative[-]).
• Selecttheappropriaterangeonthedisplaydevice.
Notethattheprobe’soutputis1mV/A.
• Turndisplaydevicepoweron.
• Turn on the instrument.The Green LED should be on. If the Green
LEDdoesnotcomeonorgoesoafterafewminutes,itisnecessary
toreplacethebattery(see“BatteryReplacement”§5.1.1).
4.1.1 DC Measurement
• SelecttheappropriateDCmVorVrangeontheDMMormeasuring
instrument.
• “Zero”theprobe-withtheprobedisconnectedfromtestsamples(no
conductorinprobejawwindow),pushinandturnthezeroadjustment
knobtoobtainareadingbetterthan0.5mVontheDMM.
• Forbestaccuracy,especiallyonlow-levelmeasurement,itisrecom-
mendedthatyouzerotheprobebeforeeachmeasurement.
• Clamptheprobearoundtheconductortobetested.TheDMMordis-
play device should now display the measured conductor current. A
positivereadingindicatescurrentowinginthedirectionofthearrow
locatedonthesideofthejaw.Anegativereadingindicatescurrentow
intheoppositedirectionofthearrow.
• Apply the conversion ratio (1mV/A) to get the value of the current.
(e.g.If themultimeter reading is 250mVDC, the measured current is
250ADC).

4.1.2 AC Measurement

• TheDCzeroadjustmentisnotrequiredwhenmeasuringACcurrent
withavoltmeterthatisACcoupled.TheDCzeroadjustmentis
requiredifyouareusingavoltmeterthatisDCcoupled.
• SelecttheappropriatemVAC or VACrangeontheDMMormeasuring
instrument.
• Clamptheprobearoundtheconductortobetested.Thedisplaydevice
shouldnowdisplaythemeasuredconductorcurrent.
• Applytheconversionratio(1mV/A)togetthevalueofthecurrent.
4.1.3 Indicator Lights: Green LED
• TheGreenLEDindicatesthattheprobeisonandthatthebatteryis
good.
• Itwillnotlightunderlowbatteryconditions.
• Replacethe9Vbatteryifitisnotlit.
4.2 Tips For Getting the Best Accuracy
TheModelsMR410 and MR520 arecapableof measuring DCandfre-
quencycurrentsoverawiderange.Herearesomekeyconsiderationsfor
gettingthemostaccuracyfromyourdisplayinstrument:
• WhenusingtheModelsMR410andMR520withaDMMorother
meter,itisimportanttoselecttherangethatprovidesthebest
resolution.
• Makesurethatprobejawmatingsurfacesarefreeofdustand
contamination.
• Bewareofshort-circuitcurrents.Largein-rushDCcurrents
(whichcanoccurwhenpowerisrstappliedinacircuit)and
largehigh-currenttransientsmaycausevaryingdegreesof
residualreadings.
• Ifindoubtofaparticularreading,removetheprobefromthe
conductorundertestandchecktoseethatthedisplaydevice
returnstozero.Ifnot,itwillbenecessarytorezerotheprobe.

5.1 Maintenance
WARNING:
• Formaintenanceuseonlyspeciedreplacementparts.
• Toavoidelectricalshock,donotattempttoperformanyservicing
unlessyouarequaliedtodoso.
• Toavoidelectricalshockand/ordamagetotheinstrument,donot
getwaterorotherforeignagentsintothecase.Turnthecurrent
probe OFF and disconnect the unit from all the circuits before
openingthecase.
5.1.1 Battery Replacement
Whentheprobeisturnedon,thegreenLEDshouldlightup.Ifitdoesnot,
replacethe9Vbattery.
• Completelydisconnecttheprobefromthecircuitundertest,and
fromtheDMMormeasuringinstrument.
• TurntheprobeOFF.
• Unscrewthebatterycompartmentscrewandremovecover.
• Replacethebatteryandputthecoverbackon.
Donotreplacethebatterywhiletheprobeisinuse.
5.1.2 Cleaning
• Cleanthe bodyof theclamp witha clothlightly moistenedwith
soapywater.
• Wipecleanwithaclothmoistenedwithcleanwateranddry.
• Donotusesolvent.
