Introduction
What is the BLE-485 Bluetooth Adaptor?
The Anuracom BLE-485 is battery operated Bluetooth device that
connects RS485 serial connection devices and sensors to computers and
mobile devices with Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 capabilities*. Anuracom
establishes a secure Bluetooth link of approximately 45 meters in air
range, and a programmable RS485 serial connection that can
communicate with up to 32 hardware devices. It is designed for Modbus
communication.
Anuracom BLE-485 comes packaged with a PC application to create easy,
hands-free connection to RS485 devices and networks. The application
sets up a virtual com port to allow existing Windows PC serial software
applications, designed to communicate serially, to be used without
additional software modifications assuming the program supports com
ports and baud rates from 9600 to 115200 speeds.
*A low-cost USB/BLE 4.0 dongle adaptor (see appendix B for tested
USB/BLE 4.0 devices) must be used along with our free utility Anuracom
application if using Windows computers.
Initial Inspection and Handling
In your package you should have:
1 AA 3.6 VDC Lithium battery (except if model BLE-485-0)
1 BLE-485 Bluetooth Adaptor

Do’s and don’ts
DO Mount as high as practical for best Bluetooth reception/range.
DO Insure unit is on, cap screwed clockwise, and blue LED flashes for 1
minute. When Set Screw (maybe a picture) sets against the stop ridge,
the unit is OFF
DO install Anuracom who will establish a virtual serial port allowing you to
use existing serial PC applications and the enclosed USB/BLE 4.0 dongle.
DO Register the unit with Anuraco at
http://www.anuraco.com/registration/
DON’T Install the unit where the clear antenna window is under water or
buried where there is not radio reception. BLE 4.0 is a radio link that in
line of sight conditions will travel 45 meters with the enclosed Bluetooth
adaptor properly installed in Windows 7 or 10 PC. Walls, metal ground
cover and other blockages will reduce Range.
DON’T leave the unit on if storing for extended periods of time. The
battery has a 10 year life if the unit is not turned on and approx. 3 years
under normal intermittent use operation.
DON’T Leave the unit without a sensor or device attached to its connector
if outside in moist environment. The connector is submersible if
connected, but will corrode over time if unconnected and left outside in a
wet or corrosive environment.

Installation and Set-up
How RS485 and Bluetooth Low energy adaptors work?
The Anuracom BLE-485 device is an adaptor that converts a Bluetooth
Low Energy radio connection to a RS485 serial connection which allows
you to connect hands free to a remote serial device with a RS485
interface. On the RS485 side the adaptor can be programmed with its
utility tool to communicate at Baud rates of 9600, 19200, 38400, 56800
and 112000 which needs to match up the setting of the attached RS485
device. RS485 is a standard serial IEEE connection that communicates
on a two wire bus with ground up to 32 RS485 devices and over on a bus
of approximately 4500 feet of wire. It is assumed that users understand
and use standard RS485 wiring practices.
Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 is a Bluetooth standard that supports very low
energy operation which allows the remote device to operate with small
batteries using mobile device or computer with BLE 4.0 Bluetooth radios.
Anuraco has written an applications that establishes what is called a
virtual serial port for industrial robust connection links using your
computer or phone, but more importantly PC serial applications that
support com port communications can be used without having to rewrite
the application with native Bluetooth coding.
Connecting a BLE-485 Bluetooth Adaptor to a RS485
device
The Anuracom comes with a 5 pole
single keyway M12 type A single
keyway IP67 female connector
designed to mate with a 5 pole field
connector with pinout as follows. A
mating connector is available for
purchase from Anuraco, part # 1C-001.

Maintenance
The only maintenance on the Anuracom is to replace the battery and
insure that the poly cap is not shielded from broadcasting and receiving
Bluetooth signals i.e. plant growth or installation conditions change. After
first installing a battery you have the option of programming in the install
date of the battery or a date when you may want to replace the battery in
the future. The device was designed to broadcast for 3 years and
communicate a 50 mB of data during this time without a need to replace
the battery. More communication will shorten the life of the battery and
with less communication the unit will get up to a max of 4 years of life.
We recommend scheduling a battery change from 1 to 3 years depending
on your communication needs. If you have an application that requires
constant communication you can power the adaptor via an external 9-24
vdc supply provided to Pin 1 of the input connection.

APPENDIX A
Bluetooth Dongle Installation Information
Anuracom uses a Bluetooth 4.0+ USB dongle and installs a specific driver
for it during the software installation. This creates communication with
the Bluetooth chip inside the BLE-485. To install Anuracom correctly,
insert Bluetooth dongle into USB port and ignore all self-installed settings
from the dongle manufacturer. Then install Anuracom following prompts.
{image here } When prompted to choose the zadig port –It will
automatically list your Bluetooth dongle as your latest installed USB
device. IMPORTANT: Make sure to choose your Bluetooth 4.0+ dongle
and not any other USB port devices installed on your computer!!
Anuracom will NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY if you do not choose the
Bluetooth dongle from this list. If at the end of the installation Anuracom
does not open correctly, then you will need to reinstall and choose the
correct USB port with your dongle properly inserted.
If you do not see your Bluetooth USB device name, then either you do not
have it installed in your USB port correctly, or it is not an approved USB
Bluetooth 4.0+ dongle. Quit the installation process and try reinserting
your USB dongle into the USB port or into a different USB port on your
computer and start the installation process again.
