Use latex gloves for the maintenance op-
erations that require contact with used
oil. Used engine oil may cause skin can-
cer if repeatedly left in contact with the
skin for prolonged periods. Although
this is unlikely unless you handle used
oil on a daily basis, it is advisable to
thoroughly wash your hands with soap
and water after handling used oil.

In certain conditions, the ethylene glycol
contained in the engine coolant is flamma-
ble: its flame is invisible, b t yo can be
b rned anyway.
aWARNING
Avoid spilling the engine coolant on the
exhaust system or on the engine compo-
nents. They may be hot enough to cause
the coolant to ignite and burn without a
visible flame.
The coolant (ethylene glycol) can cause
skin irritation and is poisonous if swal-
lowed.
Coolant and coolant/water mixtures are
sweet to the taste and brightly colored,
therefore are highly attractive to pets
and children. Take extra precautions to
keep new and used coolant out of reach
of children and animals.
KEEP COOLANT AWAY FROM CHIL-
DREN.
Risk of burn.
Do not remove the radiator cap when the
engine is hot. Wait until the engine has
completely cooled down. The coolant is
under pressure and may splash out and
cause burns.

ORIGIN OF THE EMISSIONS
The comb stion process prod ces carbon
monoxide and hydrocarbons. The control
of hydrocarbons is very important, beca se
nder certain conditions they react to ex-
pos re to s nlight and prod ce photo-
chemical smog.
Carbon monoxide does not react in the
same way, b t it is toxic and poisono s.
aprilia tilizes “lean” carb retor settings
and other systems to red ce the prod c-
tion of carbon monoxide and hydrocar-
bons.
EXHAUST EMISSION

The Exha st Emission Control System re-
q ires “lean” carb retor settings and no
adj stments sho ld be made, except idle
speed adj stments by means of the appro-
priate screw.

any person other than for p rposes of
maintenance, repair, or replacement, of
any device or element of design incor-
porated into any new vehicle for the p r-
pose of noise control prior to its sale or
delivery to the ltimate p rchaser or
while it is in se, or
b) The se of the vehicle after s ch device
or element of design has been removed
or rendered inoperative by any person.
Among those acts pres med to constit te
tampering are the acts listed below:
a) Removal of, or p nct ring the m ffler,
baffles, header pipes or any other com-
ponent which cond cts exha st gases.
b) Removal or p nct ring of any part of
the intake system.
c) Lack of proper maintenance.
d) Replacing any moving part of the vehi-
cle, or parts of the exha st or intake
system, with parts other than those
specified by the man fact rer.
aCAUTION
This product should be checked for re-
pair or replacement if the vehicle noise
has increased significantly through use.
Otherwise, the owner may become sub-
ject to penalties under state and local or-
dinances.

The instr ctions given below cover normal
operation of yo r vehicle and m st be
caref lly observed. By following these
r les yo will enhance yo r own safety and
the safety of those aro nd yo . Yo will
also maximize the life and tility of yo r ve-
hicle.
Two wheeled vehicles obvio sly do not
provide some of the protection provided by
a tomobiles, therefore it is essential that
yo wear appropriate protective clothing.
Especially, never operate yo r vehicle
witho t wearing yo r helmet, gloves, eye
protection, a heavy jacket, st rdy footwear,
and st rdy f ll length pants.
However, do not ass me that even the
best clothing and helmet will protect yo in
the event of an pset or a crash with anoth-
er vehicle. At best, this gear provides
some protection from scrapes and scratch-
es, b t very little, if any, impact protection.
Be s re that yo meet all the req irements
prescribed by local law, incl ding driver’s li-
cense, minim m age, training, ins rance,
taxes, vehicle registration, license plate,
etc.
When yo first receive yo r vehicle, prac-
tice by riding in areas where there is little
traffic. Do not attempt to ride in heavy traf-
fic ntil yo are thoro ghly experienced
and riding yo r vehicle has become sec-
ond nat re to yo .
Most states prohibit the operation of this
size vehicle on freeways or expressways,
be s re that it is legal to se yo r vehicle
before yo take any partic lar road.
A new vehicle m st be caref lly broken in,
see p. 52 (RUNNING-IN).
Before starting the engine, make s re that
the brakes, cl tch, transmission and throt-
tle controls f nction properly and that the
f el and oil s pply is adeq ate.
The exha st system, brakes, and some
other parts of the vehicle become very hot
d ring operation. Do not to ch any of
these parts.
Some medicines or dr gs, illegal or pre-
scription, and alcohol significantly increase
the risk of accidents. Do not ride while yo
are nder the infl ence of alcohol or dr gs,
be they illicit or prescription. Make s re
yo are in good physical condition and not
ill before riding yo r vehicle. Do not ride
yo r vehicle when yo are partic larly tired
or fatig ed. Alcohol, dr gs and fatig e are
leading ca ses of vehicle accidents.
Many accidents are ca sed by the rider’s
inexperience and lack of training. Do not
ride yo r vehicle ntil yo have received
training from a recognized training organi-
zation s ch as the Motorcycle Safety
Fo ndation. Remember that riding a vehi-
cle, tho gh easy and f n, is q ite different
from driving a car. Do not ass me that yo
can operate yo r vehicle safely j st be-
ca se yo are a competent a tomobile
driver.
Never lend yo r vehicle to others nless
yo are s re that they are competent and
properly licensed vehicle operators.

use and maintenance Scarabeo 50 -
Observe all r les of the road. Partic larly
pay attention to all warning, reg latory and
informational signs.
Avoid showing off (i.e., popping wheelies).
Especially observe speed limits, remember
that road conditions change with the
weather and wet and icy pavements are
partic larly dangero s for vehicles, espe-
cially if yo are riding too fast. Remember
that a tomobile drivers have a hard time
seeing vehicles, so always give the a to-
mobile the right of way, even if it is legally
yo rs.
Before changing lane, look over yo r
sho lder to make s re that the way is
clear. Do not rely excl sively on the rear-
view mirror: yo may miscalc late the dis-
tance and speed of a vehicle, or yo may
even not see it at all.
Avoid obstacles that co ld damage the ve-
hicle or make yo lose control.
Do not tailgate, do not attempt to increase
yo r gas mileage by following in the slip
stream of cars or tr cks in front of yo .
In case of accident motorcycles, scooters
and mopeds do not provide the same de-
gree of protection ens red by a tomobiles.
The legs, in partic lar, are exposed the risk
of being inj red. However, the additional
installation of leg g ards may act ally in-
crease the risk of inj ries and their serio s-
ness in case of accident.
Do not install leg g ards available on the
market of spare parts and accessories.
Non-compliance with these instr ctions
may res lt in serio s inj ries or even
death.
Always ride with both hands on the han-
dlebars and feet on the footrests.
Never shift gear witho t sing the cl tch, if
the vehicle is so eq ipped. Do not operate
the shift lever or the other controls s dden-
ly or abr ptly. S ch mis se can damage
the internal components of the vehicle and
conseq ently ca se seiz re, loss of con-
trol, accidents and serio s inj ries or even
death.
Remain in the seat when yo are riding.
Do not stand p or attempt to stretch while
yo are riding yo r vehicle. If yo need to
rest, p ll over to the side of the road when
it can be safely done.
20 use and maintenance Scarabeo 50 -
It is very important to yo r safety that yo
give f ll attention to the riding task. Watch
what yo are doing, do not allow yo rself to
be distracted by other cars, people or
things on the roadside, etc. Never smoke,
eat, drink, read, etc. while riding yo r vehi-
cle. If yo m st cons lt a map, p ll over
when it can be done safely.
Use only the vehicle’s specific f els and l -
bricants indicated in the “LUBRICANT
CHART”; check the oil, f el and coolant
levels reg larly.
If the throttle sticks open, it may ca se a
collision with another vehicle, or an pset.
If the throttle sticks, kill the engine with the
engine stop switch located on the right
handlebar.
Do not attempt to restart the engine ntil
the throttle has been repaired and works
perfectly. Fail re to obey this warning can
lead to a r naway with serio sly inj ries or
even death.
aWARNING
In the event of a throttle sticking emer-
gency, always kill the engine using the
engine stop switch located near the
throttle grip on the right handlebar.
Never use your vehicle if the throttle
does not automatically fully return to
the idle position when the throttle grip
is released. Contact your Local aprilia
Dealer for repairs. Failure to heed this
warning can lead to a serious accident
and subsequent injury or even death.
If yo and yo r vehicle are involved in an
accident, ins re that there has been no
damage to the control levers, t bes, wires,
braking system and other vital parts. If
yo r vehicle is involved in an accident, take
it immediately to yo r Local aprilia Dealer
who has the eq ipment and knowledge to
check for accidental damage which may
compromise yo r safety.
Yo r aprilia dealer is ready and able to
help yo with any safety problems that yo
might have, b t of co rse it is necessary
for yo to report any malf nctions to yo r
mechanic in order for him to help yo .
Do not se yo r vehicle if it is damaged. A
damaged vehicle may become nstable or
present other problems which can increase
the risk of accident, and therefore of seri-
o s inj ry or even death.
